Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Some of His Descendants”, by Wilson V. Ledley
This post examines the families of the other granddaughters of William Adriaense Bennet1 not covered by earlier posts. There are fewer comments on these families, but they are included here for a complete picture of the Bennet family and to list some of their descendants not included by Ledley.
Marritje2 Bennet (William1), wife of Johannes Schaers
93:203. Ledley states that Johannes Schaers, husband of Marritje2 Bennet, died in November 1684, “according to Flatbush church records,” leaving three sons and three daughters. However, he names two sons and four daughters, which is probably correct.
93:203. Alexander3 Schaers (Marritje2 Bennet, William1) is probably the Alexsander Jansen Lihars (Schaers?) who is listed as a new member at Midwood on 6 Apr 1689.2 Maria bennet (prob. his mother3) is listed as a new member the same day, while she and her husband, Johannes Schaers, were listed as members at Gowanus in 1679.4 As Alexander Johannessen he witnessed the baptism of his cousin, Johannes Van Pelt on 8 Jun 1687, along with his mother, Marja Willemsen Bennet.5 Ledley was uncertain if Alexander was a son or brother of Johannes Christoffel Schaers, but these records show he was his son. He took the oath of allegiance in 1687, so born by at least Sep 1671 (assuming a minimum age of 16)6
93.204. Aeltjer3 Schaers (Marritje2 Bennet, William1) as Aeltje Olds married second John Staff in 17 May 1714 at the RDC of NYC, NY.7

Tryntje3 Bennet (Adriaen2, William1), wife of Cornelius Van Brunt
This commentary will draw on Ledley’s article on the family, and Genealogy of the Van Brunt Family by Teunis Bergen.
Cornelius5 Van Brunt (Rutgert4) did not marry Magdalena Fenton,9 that was his cousin, Cornelius4 Van Brunt (Nicholas3, Cornelius2, Rutgert1). Bergen lists that Cornelius’ wife as Eleanor,10 but in the baptismal record of their son, Hendrick, baptized 07 May 1752 at the RDC of Freehold, NJ,11 the mother’s name is Magdalena Fenten with Cornelius’ brother, Hendrick, and sister, Catherine, serving as witnesses, while his parents served as witnesses for their granddaughter, Geesje Wynants (her mother, Engeltje, was recorded as Anne by Bergen), on the same day at that church.
This Hilletje may be the Hilletje Van Brunt of Staten Island who married Jacob Vandeventer of Somerset Co., NJ with license dated 07 Aug 1747.
94:35. Adrian4 Van Brunt (Tryntje3 Bennet, Adriaen2, William1) probably died young or at least without heirs as Ledley suggested. Besides neither he nor his children being named in his father’s will, no records have been found to confirm his marriage. He is not listed separately in the 1731 census on Kings Co., NY,12 and is probably not married living with his parents since no daughter under 10 is listed in the family of Cornelius Van Brunt and Adrian supposedly had a daughter, Jane, born 3 Oct 1726. If Adrian did marry Jannetje Hendricks, she was probably the sister of Geesje Hendricks who married Nicholas3 Van Brunt (Cornelius2, Rutger1). Geesje and Nicholas were the baptismal witnesses for Nicholas, son of Albert and Jannetje, being the possible maternal aunt and paternal uncle, but alternately, see below. This is the only support I have found for Jannetje Hendricks being Adrian’s wife.
Unfortunately, Ledley did not try to identify the parents of this Jane as his genealogy did not extend that far. Bergen gives an exact date for her birthdate, but that probably comes from a record of the family of her husband, Albert Van Brunt, which Bergen does not cite. If Bergen misidentified the parents of Jane Van Brunt, wife of Albert, they are most likely Nicholas3 Van Brunt (Cornelius2, Rutger1) and Geesje Hendrickson. Bergen only gives her name and that she was of New Jersey, with no further trace.13 Her presumed brother, Cornelius, was married to Magdalena Fenton on 01 May 1745 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush, NY,14 so assuming he was at least 20 at that time, he was born by 1725, but probably earlier (his future father-in-law, Joseph Fenton, died before 16 Dec 1719,15 so his wife was born by 1720). Jane and Albert were married shortly after on 26 Oct 1745 at the same church, but unfortunately no location information was included in the record. A birthdate in 1726 is possible for this Jannetje. More importantly Albert and Jane’s son, Nicholas, was baptized at the RDC of NYC, NY on 17 Sep 1749 with Nicholas Van Brunt and Geesje Hendricks (presumably the maternal grandparents who were living in New Jersey at the time) serving as witnesses, and the child being named after his presumed maternal grandfather. The naming of their three eldest children somewhat supports this placement:
Elizabeth, after her paternal grandmother,
Nicholas, after his maternal grandfather, and
Rutger, after his paternal grandfather (they did not have another daughter)
This appears to be the best placement for Jannetje Van Brunt.
94:35. Agnes4 is mentioned as having had children but herself being deceased when her father wrote his will on 25 Jul 1748 at New Utrecht, Kings Co., NY.16 She probably married Mattias Van Dyck, son of Jan Jasen Van Dyck and Teuntje Lane, though her maiden name is not given in any known records. The couple was married by 1714 as they sold land in New Utrecht on 7 Jun 1714.17 Agnes died before 01 Apr 1738 when Matthias remarried with license to Orionta (Adriaentje) Hooffa.18 No baptismal records were found for the children of this couple, but Matthias served as a baptism witness for three children, presumably all close relatives, all at the RDC of New Utrecht, NY:19
21 Jan 1722; Angenietje; daughter of Simon de Hart and Angenietje [van Dyck] (sister of Matthias); witnesses: Thys Van Dyck and Angenietje, his wife.
9 Feb 1735; Angenetje; daughter of Klaes Van Brunt (brother of Agnes Van Brunt) and Geesjie (Hendrickson) s.v.; witnesses: Mathys Van Dyck, Angenetje his wife (presumably Klaes’ sister, the child being named after her).
25 Dec 1748; Angenietje; daughter of Dirck Pietersen, Nieltje his wife (Van Brunt, sister of Agnes Van Brunt); witnesses: Thys Van Dyck (husband of Agnes, presumably Van Brunt, deceased, the child being named after her) and Adriaentje (second wife of Matthias).
In the naming of their children: John, Teuntje, Jannetje, and Mayke are named for his parents and siblings, while Catherine, Mary, and Margaret are named for her presumed mother and siblings. Only Engeltje is not named for a known immediate family member. In the 1731 census of New Utrecht, Kings, NY,20 besides the parents there are apparently three sons and three daughters listed. That would imply they had another son who died young, but also that they had four children born after the census. but she was already 42 at that time, so the census record is probably partially wrong.
Agnes’ baptism in 1689, marriage by 1714, and death by 1748 fit well, though loosely, with the facts concerning the family of Matthias and Agnes Van Dyck.

vii. MARGARET DUBOIS, bap. 28 Nov 1740, at New Utrecht, NY.
5. NICHOLAS4 VAN BRUNT (TRYNTJE3 BENNET, ADRIAN WILLEMSE2, WILLIAM ADRIANSE1) was born bet. 1693-1698 in NY, and died bef. 01 Feb 1782 in Shrewsbury, Monmouth, NJ. He married GEESJE HENDRICKSON, daughter of HENDRICK HENDRICKSON and CATHERINE VAN DYCK. She was born circa 1703 in NY.
Nicholas did not have a daughter named Helena. Sometimes Engeltje is thought to be Helen, but the records of her list her name as Engeltje or as below, Anne, probably short for Angeltje as in his will:
1760, April 12. Van Brunt, Nicolaes, of Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., yeoman; will of. Wife, Geassey, use of real and personal estate; but must allow my sons, Hendrick and Nicholas, to till the soil. At wife's death, the moveable estate I give my children and my son Cornelius' 5 children. Sons, Hendrick and Nicholas, the plantation at the Falls. At the marriage of daughter, Caty, she shall have £35. Daughter, Jonnety, £100. Daughter, Caty, £100. Documents Relating to the History of the State of New Jersey, vol 35, Calendar of New Jersey Wills, vol 6, pg 404
Children of NICHOLAS VAN BRUNT and GEESJE HENDRICKSON are:
i. CORNELIUS5 VAN BRUNT, b. circa 1724; d. bef. 1761; m. MAGDALENA FENTON, 01 May 1745, DRC of Flatbush, Kings, NY; b. circa 1720, NY.
Bergen mistakenly lists the marriage date as 1 May 1735. Elizabeth, baptized at New Utrecht in 1739 was not his daughter.
ii. JANNETJE VAN BRUNT, b. 03 Oct 1726; d. 1781; m. ALBERT VAN BRUNT, 26 Oct 1745, DRC of Flatbush, Kings, NY; b. 16 Nov 1720, NY; d. 1781.
iii. CATHERINE VAN BRUNT, b. circa 1728; d. aft. 1759. She was a witness for a baptism in 1752.
iv. HENDRICK VAN BRUNT, b. circa 1730; d. bef. 11 Feb 1797, Shrewsbury, NJ; m. ELEANOR SCHENCK, 21 Dec 1756, NJ3; bap. 18 Sep 1737, at Freehold, Monmouth, NJ; d. bef. 24 Feb 1814, Shrewsbury, NJ.
He was a witness for baptisms in 1752 and 1760.
His will mentions his wife, Neeltje, brother, Nicholas, sister Anne [aka Engeltje] Winant, brother Cornelius' sons, Joseph, Nicholas, Hendrick and Cornelius, 2 relations: Aucky Wickoff & John Schenck [both brothers-in-law].
v. ENGELTJE VAN BRUNT, bap. 23 Apr 1732, at Freehold, NJ; d. aft. 1793; m. CORNELIUS WYNANTS. Her name is given as Annetje in several baptisms.
vi. AGNES VAN BRUNT, bap. 09 Feb 1734/35, at New Utrecht, NY; d. aft. 1787; m. ALBERT SCHENCK; bap. 18 May 1721, at Freehold, NJ; d. bef. 10 Jun 1786, Penns Neck, Windsor, NJ.
Albert’s will mentions their children, except those who died young, his wife, Agnes, her father, Nicholas Van Brunt.
Deed dated 3 Feb 1786 to Samuel Olden does not mention his wife, Agnes, but she separately releases her dower rights on 18 Apr 1788 as Albert's widow.
vii. GEESJE VAN BRUNT, bap. 23 Oct 1737, at New Utrecht, NY; m. CORNELIUS HEGEMAN, 03 May 1766, NJ3; b. circa 1737.
The abstract of their marriage bond reads:
#364; Cornlus HEGEMAN (Cornelius HOGEMAN) and Nicolas VANBRANT (Nicholas VAN BRUNT of Shrosberry* in the County of Monmouth... [bound to]... William FRANKLIN, Governor... 500 pounds... 3 May 1766. ... Cornelus HAGEMON... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Crese VANBRUNT... [w] blank

6. GRIETJE4 VAN BRUNT (TRYNTJE3 BENNET, ADRIAN WILLEMSE2, WILLIAM ADRIANSE1) was born aft. 1697 in NY. She married THOMAS POLLOCK. He died aft. 1754.
The mother for the baptism of Catherine is listed as Neeltje, but Neeltje does appear to have been married to Dirck Pietersen, so I have followed Bergen.
Child of GRIETJE VAN BRUNT and THOMAS POLLOCK is:
i. CATHERINE5 POLLOCK, bap. 27 Jul 1735, at New Utrecht, NY; m. ADRIAN HEGEMAN, 15 Mar 1759, NY3; b. 09 Aug 1736, NY; d. 22 Oct 1809, New Utrecht, NY.

Mary3 Bennet (Adriaen2, William1), wife of Jacob Van Doren
94:38. Her granddaughter, Ann5 Van Doren (Abraham4) married Phillip Folkerts.23 The three grandchildren mentioned in Abraham’s will were theirs, baptized shortly afterwards at the RDC of New Brunswick, NJ and Six Mile Run, Somerset, NJ.24 Philip died before 29 Jul 1808 when Richard (presumably his son, Dirck) P. Fulkerson swore to the inventory of his estate as the administrator.25
Her granddaughter, Ann5 Van Doren (Abraham4) probably married John Blauw.26 This is based on circumstantial evidence, including the naming of their two eldest sons and two eldest daughters after their presumed grandparents.27
Her grandson, Jacob5 Van Doren (Abraham4) did not marry 2nd Ann Nicolas.28 She married Jacob Van Doren, probably son of Jan Van Doren and Agnes Schenck, see below. His pension W18209 says he was married 20 Aug 1769 at Bound Brook, NJ, and moved to NY in 1800. His widow [Jane] applied for a pension on 23 Dec. 1837 in Saratoga Co., NY, at the age of 87. She says that Abraham and Phebe Van Doren were present at her marriage and that she was born 25 Oct 1750 and they had 10 children but only three were named: Ellen/Neeltje bap. 25 Mar 1772, Maria bap. 26 Mar 1773 and Eliza C. Their daughter Eliza C. Alvord was 47 in 1837, the widow's brother, Abraham Voorhees, was 82 in 1837 and lived in Genesee Co., NY.
Her granddaughter, Agnes5 Schenck (Engeltje4 Van Doren) is said to have married John Voorhees after the death of her husband, Jan Van Doren,29 but that marriage is not included in the Van Voorhees Family in America genealogy (also, see mortgage in 1812 below). She was not also known as “Anna” who administered his supposed estate (later identified as probably his daughter).30 The Index of Mortgages, Morris Co., NJ lists a mortgage from Jacob and Agnes Van Doren31 to Nicholas Arrowsmith (who later purchased most of that land) in 1812. Unfortunately, the actual mortgage is not online, but I am assuming this is Agnes Van Doren, widow of John, and her son, Jacob Van Doren. Anne Vandoren and John Haas were administrators of the estate of Jacob, not John, Van Doren of Chester, Morris, NJ. This Jacob was probably the son of Jan Van Doren and Agnes Scheck and married Anne Nicholaus 7 Jan 1783 RDC Freehold, NJ.32 She was born 28 June 1765 in Morris, NJ and died 11 December 1841 in Licking Co., OH where several of her children moved.33 Jacob’s estate was divided into 16 parts. Land sales reveal most of their children:
Sarah, wife of Richard Conine, sold her 1/16, Morris Co., NJ Deeds, K2, pg. 409;
William H. and his wife, Sally sold his 2/16, Morris Co., NJ Deeds, B2, pg. 437;
Agnes and her husband, Jeremiah Bird, sold her 1/16, Morris Co., NJ Deeds, I2, pg. 71;
Catherine, wife of John Case sold her 1/16, Morris Co., NJ Deeds, W, pg. 263;
Elizabeth and her husband, James Mullen sold her 1/16, Morris Co., NJ Deeds, E2, pg. 380;
Mary and her husband, William Phoenix, sold her 1/16, Morris Co., NJ Deeds, I2, pg. 71;
Joseph sold his 2/16, Morris Co., NJ Deeds, E2, pg. 383;
Roelof and Isaac are probably two of their other children, but it is unknown who held the other three shares, though Jacob Van Doren, Jr is likely one of them.
Her grandson, William5 Wyckoff (Agnes4 Van Doren) is said to have married Louisa Watts.34 However, neither he nor any descendants are not mentioned in the will of his father,35 making this questionable. A William Wikoff married a Susanna Watts36 who is likely this “Louisa”, and apparently moved to Louisianan in 1775, possibly having received his inheritance before leaving. His nephew, William Wikoff, followed him to Louisiana.
Her daughter, Catherine4, married Cornelius Wyckoff, thought to be the son of Cornelius Clasem Wyckoff,37 however, he was not. In the will of that Cornelius38 he names his father as Cornelius, but his wife as Mary and a daughter, Adriaentie, named after her paternal grandmother. Instead, he was the son of Jan Wyckoff and Geertje Stryker, bap. 04 Apr 1711 at the RDC of NYC, NY.39 He is named in the will of his father, Jan Wyckoff of Somerset Co., NJ,40 as being his eldest son. They had five other children baptized as Somerville (Raritan).
Catherine4 died before 24 Mar 1761 when Cornelius Wyckoff, a widower, married Lammetje Kroesen, a widow, at the Presbyterian Church of Churchville, Bucks, PA.41 She was previously married to Derick Kroesen of Northampton, Bucks, PA who died before 04 Jan 1758 when his will was proven.42 Cornelius and Lammetje had a daughter, Catherine, bap. 10 Jul 1763 at the RDC of Six Mile Run, Somerset, NJ.43 mentioned in Cornelius’ will as Catherine Meserole.44 She is named in the will of her half-brother, Derrick Kroesen, as his half-sister, Catherine Wyckoff.45
Peter5, son of Cornelius and Catherine4, is probably the Peter Wyckoff, son of Cornelius, who married Catherine, daughter of Derrick Kroesen and Elizabeth Van Nuys,46 on 2 Dec 1772.47 If correct, their four eldest children: Catherine, Elizabeth, Cornelius, and Richard were named after their grandparents; of their other 10 children, only Jane, Agnes, and Sarah were not named after known immediate family members.

Roelof’s will written 18 Sep 1762 mentions his wife, Anelty [sic], and his son Garrit to pay his daughter Mary's 2 children 100 pounds. I think Mary had at least 3 children, so this may have only referred to her sons, but more likely it implies she was deceased and her husband had or might remarry.

Maria3 Bennet (Willaim2, William1), wife of Jacobus Verhulst
94.109. No grandchildren of Maria Bennet were found. However, there has been some speculation that some members of the Hulst family may be descended from the Verhulst family. In particular, Nelson Powell Hulst was thought to have been one of their descendants,48 but he was not. Nelson was the son of Garret Hulst and Nancy Powell,49 who was the son of Anthony Hulst and Sarah Duryea.50 Anthony was the son of John Hulst and Deborah Blake, who married 17 May 1777,51 not Johanna Antonides, but otherwise the ancestry up to that point appears to be correct. After the death of John, Deborah married Peter Duryea.52 John is mentioned as deceased in the will of his father, Anthony Hulst, written 17 May 1813,53 as well as the children of his sister, Barbary. The ancestry of Anthony Hulst being of the Holsaert family, rather than the Verhulst family, is described by Chris Chester in his article “Family of Johannes Holsaert, Immigrant to New York (A rough genealogical summary)”.54
As a side note, Chester’s article is very helpful for the genealogy of the Holsaert family. It established that Johnannes2 Holsaert (Johannes1) married Cornelia Maas, not Debby Blake as suggested by Bergen and incorporated by some researchers.55 It also established that he did not have a son named Johannes who married Ann, daughter of Rutger Waldron. Rather, he and Cornelia had a daughter, Ann, mentioned in Rutgert Waldron’s will as Ann Holsaert, being his step-daughter, not yet married. Ann is the only step-child mentioned in Rutger’s will, so she was probably the only child of Johannes Holsaert and Cornelia Maas.
Comments on Chester’s article “Family of Johannes Holsaert”
Maria Barkelo, daughter of Dirck Barkelo and Jannetje Van Arsdalen, (RECORD 84(1953):76) did not marry Anthony Holsaert. The author of that article, Spell, did not know of Anthony’s son, Benjamin, baptized on 25 Mar 1744 at the RDC of Readington, NJ, so Maria would have been too young to have married Anthony. Maria was an undocumented daughter of Jacques Barkelo (RECORD 77(1946):33) and Jannetje Unknown. They lived near Readington, and their son, Benjamin, was probably baptized there for their sake. He was named after his paternal grandfather, just as their second son, Jacques, was named after his maternal grandfather.
Johannes Holsaert and Aeltje Couwenhoven probably had a son, Peter, born about 1735. Peter married Willemptje Honce, daughter of Johannes Van Nostrand and Helen Williamson, on 11 Apr 1757.56 They had at least two children: Aeltje, bap. 04 Dec 1757, named after her presumed paternal grandmother, and Johannes, bap. 16 Sep 1759, named after his paternal and maternal grandfathers.57 On 13 Jun 1792 there was a mortgage from Peter Hulsart to John (son of Peter) Hulsart, for land in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.58
Matthias Holsaert and Annetje Matthews had a daughter, Annetje, bap. 15 Aug 1741/42 at the DRC of Freehold and Middletown, NJ.59 She married John Brouwer with license dated 01 Mar 1764 in Monmouth, NJ.60
Margaret Bennet, daughter of William Bennet and Annetje Holsaert, probably married Jacob Vandervoort on 08 Jun 1773.61 Margaret, daughter of William Bennet and Sarah Sherman married 1st Jeremiah Remsen, 2nd Samuel Gerritsen, as Margaret Remsen, widow.62
