Martha Janse Remsen, Rumors of Her Demise

Martha Remsen, daughter of Jan Remsen and Metje Damen, Rumors of Her Demise

The children of Jan Remsen and Metje Damen mentioned in his will, written at Flatbush on 2 May 1696[1], were Sophia, Jan, Rem, Jannittie, Martha, and Cornelis.  Jan died shortly after that as James Simpson and Metje Damen were married 15 Aug 1697 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Bergen, NJ.[2]

The 1698 census of Flatbush, NY
[3] shows five children in the household of James Simson, so at least one child had died by then, now known to be Cornelius.  Neither Cornelius nor Martha is mentioned in will of their step-father, James Sympson of Flatbush, dated 22 Nov 1704.[4]  It mentions his wife, Martha (Metje Damen), and his children and her fore children, though not distinguished, Sophia, John, Rem, Jonica, Peter and Elizabeth.

Martha’s absence from the will of James Simpson has caused researchers to assume that she died young.  Also, the use of the surname Vanderbeek at her wedding hid her true parentage.

A transcription of her marriage record reads:
Year 1714. The 3 December the marriage banns were registered of Adriaan Hegeman, young man, born and residing in Midwood, and Martha van der Beek, young lady, likewise born and residing in Midwood.  Married the   by me. V. Antonides.
[5]

The transcription of the marriage records of two of her siblings, Jannetje and Rem, read:
Year 1710.  The [blank] December had their banns registered Jacobus Strijker, young man, and Jannetie van der beek, young lady; both born and residing in Midwod.
[6]

Year 1713. The 14 March the marriage banns were registered of Rem van der Beek, young man, born and residing in Midwood and Dorethe Corteljouw, young lady, born and residing under N. Utrecht.  Confirmed the 9 April 1713 in my house by me, V. Antonides.
[7]

The Remsen family occasionally used the surname Vanderbeek.  However, each of these records state they were from Midwood, or Flatbush.  The family of Paul Vanderbeek had lived in Brooklyn in the 1670s
[8] (they do not appear in later lists), but not in Flatbush, where the families of Jan Remsen and James Simpson did live.

The presence of Peter Simson, her half-brother, and Rem Vanderbeek, her brother, as witnesses for the baptisms of her children confirm her identification:

4 Dec 1720, Child: Adrian, Parents: Adrian Hegeman, Martha, witnesses: Petrus Simson, Catryna Hegeman.[9]

9 Sep 1722, Child: Adrian, Parents: Adrian Hegeman, Martha, witnesses: Petrus Suydam, Catryna Hegeman.[10]

9 May 1725, Child: Rem, Parents: Adrian Hegeman, Martha, witnesses: Rem Vanderbeek, Doreatha, s.v.[11]

4 Feb 1728, Child: Geertruyd, Parents: Adriaen Hegeman, Martha s.v., witnesses: Jan Hegeman, Gertruy Hegeman.[12]

26 Jan 1729, Child: Geertruyd, Parents: Adrian Hegeman, Martha, witnesses: Jan Hegeman, Gertruy Hegeman.[13]

7 Dec 1729, Child: Catrina, Parents: Jacobus Stryker, Jannetje, s.v. Witnesses: Adriaan Hegeman, Martha s.v.[14]   Note: Jannetje was Martha's sister.

The presence of Peter Simson, Sophia Vanderbeek and Martha Vanderbeek at the baptisms of the children of Rem Vanderbeek at the Reformed Dutch Church of Port Richmond also confirm her parentage:

1719 Jul 26; Rem Van der Beek, Dorothea Coteleau; Jan; Petrus Simson, Sophia Vander Beek.[15]

1723 Jun 02; Rem Van der Beek, Dorothea Coteleau; Jaques; Jan Hegeman, Martha Van der Beek.[16]

Rem and Martha were also witnesses for the children of Aeltje Damen, their aunt:

1708 Mar 10; Samuel Philipz, Aaltje Dame; Richard; Nicolaas Dayley, Martha Simson [Remsen/Vanderbeek].[17]

1713 Jan 28; Samuel Philipz, Aaltje Dame; Joshua (twin); Rem Remse V: drBeek, Marta Remse V: drBeek.[18]

Though Martha Simson could be either Metje Damen or her daughter, Martha Remsen, Marta Remse Van der Beek is almost certainly the daughter.

One explanation of why Martha was omitted from the will of James Simpson was the use of the reference to the “fore” children.  This may have been misconstrued when the will was transcribed from Dutch to be her “four” children by her previous marriage.  Martha would probably have been the last child listed and may have been assumed to have been a mistake for the mother since another child would have made five, not "four", children.
