The Van Den Berg Family of Albany

The Van Den Berg Family of Albany

In his excellent blog post “Gysbert Cornelise Van den Bergh & Family, Introduction to the Armchair History of Gysbert Cornelisen Van den Berg”1 Isaac Horner reviews the research on this family and provides valuable additional information.  This blog post will include additional information about five of the somewhat questionable children of Gysbert and other updates.

Children of Gysbert2 Cornelise Van Den Berg

Frederick3 (#8a) Gysbertsz

Mr. Horner uses four main sources in identifying the children of Gysbert2.  Two of them include Frederick3 as one of his sons, but the other two do not.  Horner says that one source, Stockman, says that Frederick was not a son of Gysbert, but my reading of Stockman does not show any mention of Frederick at all, as opposed to rejecting him as a son of Gysbert Cornelise.2  As Horner notes, Frederick was an adelborst (midshipman) or corporal in the West Indies Company at Fort Orange (Albany) in 1661.  By 1663 he was a widower (of Pleuntie – Teuntje? Gysberts) when he married Mary Lubberts, widow of Abraham LaNoy, at the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City.3   Given those details, he was probably born by 1640, thus likely the eldest son of Gysbert, if he was his son.

He was a baptismal witness for the children of two of his step-children, and a niece of his second wife at the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City.4  He is listed twice in the membership lists of the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City, in 16785 and 1686.6  Given the number of times he appears in the church records, but not for any of his own descendants, it is likely he had none.  In the 1686 membership list he is listed with his wife, Maria Lubberts, as living on Langs T’ Strand (Along the Shore).  The description of the area includes “the west side of Whitehall Street between State Street and Pearl Streets, the North Side of Pearl Street and Hanover Square, between Whitehall and Wall Streets.”7  Frederick probably died before December 1695 as he is not listed in the New York City tax listings of that year.8  Parts of the area he lived in appears to be included in the West Ward.  Huybert4 Gerrits Van Den Berg was living in the West Ward in the December 1695 Tax listing (see pg. 18).  Frederick owned land in the same area in 1674.9  I have not been able to establish what happened to Frederick’s land after his death, but given Frederick had no known descendants, it is possible the property passed to Huybert4 Gerrits Van Den Berg, his presumed nephew, helping to explain his move to New York City.

Neeltje3 (#5) Gysbertsz

Most of Wouter Quackenbosch and Neetlje’s children were born before the surviving records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany begin.  In those that exist, only one mentions her with her patronymic name, Neeltje Gysbertsz, in the baptism of her daughter, Marretje, on 13 Sep 1691.10  At the baptism of her cousin, Peter, son of Cornelis Claasse and Susanna Ouderkerk on 25 Apr 1703,11 she and her husband, Wouter Quakkenbosch, were the witnesses and her surname name was given as Neeltje Van den Berg.

Though she only appears in the records a few times, her husband appears as a baptismal witness for several of his wife’s nephews and nieces.  Those include:

  1. Gerrit, son of Gerrit Gysbertsz, on 15 Jul 1688.12

  2. Cornelis, son of Cornelis Gysbertsz, on 2 Oct 1687.13

  3. Geertje, daughter of William Gysbertsz on 10 Apr 1698.14

  4. Barent, son of Andries Hansz and Grietje Gysbertsz, on 15 Oct 1693.15

  5. Maria, daughter of Cornelis Van Esch and Marrytie Gerrits Van Den Berg, on 10 Mar 1706.16

Grietje3 (#7) Gysbertsz

Grietje Gysbertsz does not appear as such in the 1683 members list of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany.  She first appears a witness in the baptism of her niece, Mary, daughter of Cornelis3 Gysbertsz and Cornelia Wynants on 8 Mar 1685.17  At the baptism of her eldest known child, Barent, on 15 Oct 1693, the father is named Andries Hansz, and the mother as Grietje Gysbertsz, with Wouter Quakelbosch appearing as one of the witnesses.18  As mentioned earlier, Wouter served as a baptismal witness for several of the children of his in-laws.

On 26 Feb 1696, Andries Hanszen and his wife, Grietje Gysbertsz, transferred their church membership from Albany to New York City.19 He is listed there as Andries Barheit in the December 1695 tax list of the North Ward, NYC, in the 1 Feb 1697 tax list of the Harlem Division of the Out Ward, and in the 7 Mar 1699 tax list of the Harlem Division.20  He does not appear in the 29 Nov 1699 tax lists or later for the Harlem Division.  He does not appear in the 1703 census of NYC, which did not include the Out Ward (Bowery and Harlem), so it does not appear that he moved to NYC proper.

A few baptismal records confirm that Grietje Gysbertsz Van Den Berg married Andries Hans Barheit as his second wife.  At the baptism on 4 Mar 1719 of Margaret, daughter of Andries Barheit and Rebecca Oothout, the witnesses were Barent Barheit and Margrietje van den Berg.21  They were Andries’ brother and his mother.  At the baptism on 10 Feb 1723 of Gerrit, son of Andries and Rebecca Barheit, the witnesses were Huybert Van den Berg and Maria Van den Berg.22  They were Andries’ maternal cousin, and his wife, Maria Lansing.  At the baptism on 21 May 1721 of Johannes, son of Teunis De Voor and Geertje Barheit [daughter of Andries Hans Barheit and his first wife, Geertje Teunis De Metselaer], Maria Van Den Berg was one of the witnesses.23  Maria was undoubtedly Maria Lansing, Geertje’s maternal step-cousin.

Most researchers do not recognize Grietje Gysbertsz as the second wife of Andries Hanse Barheit, including Johathan Pearson.  Under Andries Hanse Barheit he states “Perhaps the same as 'Andries Hanse de Sweedt, dwelling at Kinderhook’ in 1675.  His wife was Gerritje Teunis, daughter of Teunise Teunise de Metselaer.  She was not living in 1699 when Egbert Teunise [her brother?] became guardian of her four children.”24  This shows the confusion around Andries Hanse Barheit as he was not “de Sweedt”, being listed separately from Andries Hanse in the 1683 members list mentioned earlier.  Egbert Teunis was indeed the brother of Andries’ first wife, Gerritje Teunis de Metselaer.  Pearson’s statement about the guardianship is probably from a court record I have not found, but given that Andries disappears from the tax records in 1699 while Margaret is still living in 1719, the guardianship is probably because of the death of Andries, not his wife.  Another example of the confusion regarding Andries Hanse is the appearance of an Andries Hanse living in Albany in the 1697 census there.25  This would not be Andries Barheit.

Geertje3 (#8) Gysbertsz

Geertje appears to have been included as a daughter of Gysbert based, in part, because of the identification of her husband as Evert Van Esch by Talcott.26  However, she is identified as Geertje Gerritse Van den Berg in her marriage record on 27 Oct 1700,27 thus to be identified as the daughter of Gerrit3 Gysbertsz and Teuntje Van Den Berg, not Gysbert.

However, Gysbert probably did have a daughter named Geertje.  She is probably the Geertje Gysbertsz in the membership list of 1683,28 thus born before 1670.  She also appears as a baptismal witness for Geertje, daughter of Willem Gysbertsz and Catryn Wynandsz on 10 Apr 1698.29  Nothing further is known of her.

Mary3 (#7) Gysbertsz

Mary appears to have been included as a possible daughter of Gysbert based on of the identification of her husband as Cornelis Esch by Vandenburg.30  She was supposedly born 5 Jul 1685, which happens to be the baptismal date of Mary, daughter of Gysbert Cornelisz,31 who was not a Van Der Berg descendant. In the baptism of their daughter, Geertje, on 6 Jan 169732 (too early for her to have been born in 1685) she is named as Marritje Gerrits, and thus to be identified as the daughter of Gerrit3 Gysbertsz and Teuntje Van Den Berg.  There appears to be no other evidence Gysbert had a daughter named Mary.

Other Updates

The surname of Teuntje, wife of Gerrit3 Gysbertsz Van DenBerg, was probably not Gerrits.  That name was taken from the list of members at the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany in 1683.  However, the wives in that list were usually listed with their married name (if their husband had a surname) or with their husband’s first name as their “surname”.  So, for example, Neeltje3 Gysbertsz Van den berg was listed after her husband, Wouter Quakelbosch, as Neeltje Quakelbosch, while Catherine Wynants Van Der Poel was listed after her husband, Willem3 Gysbertsz, as Catryn Willemsz.33

Barent Staats, husband of Neeltje4 (#26) Gerrits Van Den Berg, was not baptized on 7 Jan 1685; his sister, Tryntje, was baptized that day.34  Given he was married on 12 Oct 1701, he was probably born no later than 1681.

Arriantje4 (#21) Gerrits Van Den Berg and Conrad Elmendorf had another son, Cornelis5, baptized on 31 Oct 1697.35

Geertje4 (#383) Hubertsz Van Den Berg was actually baptized as Gerretje,36 like her sister before her.  No further records were found under either name.

The second marriage of Gerrit3 (#32) Gerrits Van Den Berg is probably incorrect.  The child baptized on 4 Feb 1730 was Cornelis, son of G. and M. V.D.  Berg; Wit: C. V. D. Bergh, Lydia V. Vegten.37  This is undoubtedly the eldest son of Gerrit5 (#412) (Cornelis4, Gerrit3, Gysbert2, Cornelis1) and Margaret Van Vechten, named after his paternal grandfather; the witness Lydia V. Vegten being the maternal grandmother.  Gerrit and Margaret were married on 15 Jul 1729.38

Cornelis3 (#4) Gysbertsz Van Den Berg did not marry second Mary Van Buren, widow of Teuwisse Van Deusen, on 21 Nov 1702.39  In the marriage record he is named as Cornelis Gerrits Van Den Berg, previously unmarried, so is identified as Cornelis4 (#28) Gerrits and Teuntje Van Den Berg, who is said to have married the same woman on the same day.

Gerrit Fort (#419) was baptized on 18 Sep 1720, not 1718.

Teuntje5 (#419) VanDen Berg (Gerrit4, Gerrit3, Gysbert2) was baptized on 20 Apr 1712, not 1686.

Gosen4 Cornelis Van Den Berg (#42) married Annetje Van Nest, daughter of Peter Van Nest and Catherine Roll.  They had at least two children:

1)      Cornelia, baptized 08 May 1726 at the Reformed Church of Raritan, NJ.  She married first  William Cock and second Jochem Gulick.

2)      Gosen, baptized 11 Feb 1727/28 at the Reformed Church of Raritan, NJ.  He married Jannetje Heryard.

Neeltje4 Quackenbosch (#51) and Simon Westfall had two other children:

1)      Mary, baptized 18 Nov 1694 at the Reformed Church of Kingston, NY.

2)      Wouter, born about 1704, married Jannetje Pier.

An Unrelated Van Den Berg Family

This family is only mentioned here to avoid a possible confusion with the Van Den Berg family of Albany.  These are the children of Arent Jeuriaens Lantsman and Belitje Post.  The father, Arent, appears to have only used his patronymic name of Jeuriaens or the surname Lantsman.  However, their children never used the surname Lantsman, only Van Den Berg, nor did they have a son named after Arent.  This family is not related to the family of Arent Van Den Berg of Albany, who also does not appear to be related to the family of Gysbert Cornelisz Van Den Berg.

Arent Lantsman was involved in several disputes in court and his wife, supported by her father, attempted to divorce him, but was denied.40  This contentiousness appears to be the reason for the adoption of a different surname, but their reason for this choice is unknown.
