Descendants of the Immigrant Hendrick Van De Water

Descendants of the Immigrant Hendrick4 Van De Water (Jan3, Hendrick2, Abraham1)

This post is a follow-up of the post “The Vandewater Family in the Netherlands.”  Wilson Ledley provided an excellent overview of the family in his series of articles “The Van de Waters of New York”.1  When he began, he did not know there were actually two different Van de Water families.  This post will focus on the family of the immigrant Hendrick Vandewater and will include the families of the Vandewater daughters which Ledley omitted.  It will include some additions and corrections.  The family of the immigrant Benjamin Vandewater will be presented in a separate post.

Peternella 6 Vandewater (Albertus5, Hendriick4) married 2nd Daniel Bonnet.  In their marriage record she is listed as Petronella Buchett2 [her fist husband being William Backet} and at the baptisms of six of her children she is called Petronella Vandewater.  Daniel did not marry Helen6 Vandewater (Cornelius5, Jacobus4, Benjamin3, Jacob2, Claes1),3 who did not actually exist.  The Nelletie Vandewater in the Assessment of the East Ward of NYC in 1730,4 was Peternella’s mother, Pieterneeltje Clopper.  Daniel Bonnet is listed between his mother-in-law and his brother-in-law, Hendrick Vandewater, in that tax assessment.

The wife of Cornelius 6 Vandewater (Albertus5, Hendriick4) was unknown to Ledley,5 but he married Abigail Siddons on 26 Feb 1725/26 at the Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, PA.6  Given that, his daughter Sarah who died young was probably born about 1729, not 1721.  On 30 Dec 1737 Cornelius and Abigail Van de Water of NYC sold land in North Ward, NYC bordering Peter Nell [Peternella] Vandewater, to Mary Rickets, Daniel Bonet being one of the witnesses.7  Their daughter, Abigail7, was named after her, confirming her placement in this family.

Ledley was uncertain of the placement of their daughter, Engeltje7.  Neither had been previously married when she married Cornelius Van Cleef at the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush, Kings, NY in 1745.  Given her parents’ marriage in 1726, she would probably have been their eldest child, normally named after one of her grandmothers.  Given Abigail’s maiden name, Siddon, and their marriage in Philadelphia, Abigail was probably not Dutch.  Engeltje is a particularly Dutch name, but was not used in her father’s immediate family.  Given her location in NYC but marriage in Kings Co. and their lack of children, it is difficult to confirm this placement.  Hopefully future research will confirm the correct placement.

Albertus7 Vandewater (Hendrick6, Albertus5, Hendrick4), and Elizabeth Skillman had a daughter, Anna, named after her paternal grandmother, born on 08 Aug 1768,8 not mentioned by Ledley.9  She married Thomas Morrell on 27 Jan 1784 at the Presbyterian Church of Jamaica, NY.10  Elizabeth apparently died by 1784 as she does not appear in a deed dated 8 Dec 1784, recorded 15 Aug 1809 (acknowledged by the witness):  Albertus Van DeWater of Queens County, NY, Surgeon sold to Peter Calyer of Bushwick, Kings County, NY land in the Out Ward of NYC, being Lot 3, bordering Lot 2 also owned by said Albertus Vandewater, and a second tract, Lots 5, 6 and 9, bordering John Skillman and the said Peter Colyer.11  Albertus married 2nd Patty Seaman on 04 Feb 1785 at Smithtown, Suffolk, NY.12  He died before 25 Sep 1790 when the commissioners of the Alms House begin to provide for Martha, widow of Albertus Vande Water, late of NYC, NY, physician. 12a

Neither Catherine7 Vandewater (Cornelius6, Albertus5, Hendrick4) nor Catherine5 Vandewater (Jacobus4, Benjamin3, Jacobus4, Benjamin3) married Lucas Burbanck in 1765 as Ledley supposed13 as she was noted as a widow in her marriage bond.14  She was probably Catherine Coljer, third wife of Hendrick6 Van De Water (Johannes5, Hendrick4), who lived in Bushwick and some of whose children were baptized at Flatbush, NY (see below).  Her parents are unknown, but were likely Peter Colyer and Tryntje Alberts.15  Lucas Burbanck and Peter Vandewater were witnesses for the will of John Hunt of Bushwick, NY (husband of Elizabeth Coljer, daughter of Jacobus, son of Peter Colyer and Tryntje Alberts), on 8 Apr 1774.16  He names his brother-in-law, Peter Coljer. as one of the executors, so Lucas Burbanck was probably John’s uncle-in-law, though not stated as such.  Lucas’ first wife was probably Martha Baile.

Cornelius7 Vandewater (Cornelius6, Albertus5, Hendrick4), husband of Mary Burtis, enlisted in Capt. George Brewerton Jr’s. company (Bloomingdale, NYC) on 18 Mar 1759, age 19.17  He may be the Cornelius Vandewater who served in the Revolutionary War as a corporal from 2/4/1776 – 3/31/177618 in Capt. William Brown's Company, Alexander McDougall, Esq., Colonel (presumably for NYC).  Nothing further is known of his family.  Ledley thought he may be the Cornelius Vandewater of Watervliet, Albany, NY in the 1790 census.19  For an alternate identification of that Cornelius, see the “Unidentified Vandewaters” later post.

In his discussion of the family of Peter6 Van De Water (Johannes5, Hendrick4), Ledley20 notes the confusion between this Peter, who wrote his will in Westbury in 1781, and another Peter, who wrote his will in Flushing in 1777.  He correctly identified the parents of Peter of Flushing, but probably not for Peter of Westbury, see the earlier post “The Early Vandewaters of Hempstead”.  Though Peter’s eldest known son was named John after his presumed grandfather, he was born 9 years after Peter married, plenty of time for him to have had other sons who died young before John.  Assuming Peter applied the normal Dutch naming conventions for his family, it could be assumed that Peter’s parents did as well, however, Peter was not a name used in the families of either of his parents.  More importantly, Peter names his nephew, Benjamin, in his will.  Ledley places Benjamin (#116)21 as the son of Peter’s presumed brother, Hendrick (#49).  Ledley thought this Benjamin may have married Ruth Hopson on 10 Jan 1758 and had a posthumous child by her as he apparently died and she remarried the same year.  However, nothing else is known of her, including how old she was and whether or not she had been married before, and she could have married a different Benjamin.22  Benjamin was not a name that appears in the descendants of Abraham1.  This Benjamin is probably the Benjamin7 Vandewater (Harmen6, Benjamin5, Jacobus4, Benjamin3, Jacob2, Claes1) who also moved to Westbury by 1782,23 near Peter, even though several of his children moved to Dutchess Co., NY, establishing an implied relationship.24  Most likely, Peter was an undocumented son of Cornelius5 Vandewater (Jacobus4, Benjamin3, Jacob2, Claes1), named after his maternal grandfather, his known siblings being named after their grandparents.  In this case, Benjamin of Westbury is Peter’s great nephew, and Peter’s grandson, Benjamin Baldwin, was named after him.  A David Vandewater was living next to Benjamin of Westbury in the 1790 census.  He was likely also a nephew of Peter.25  Peter also names his nephew, Gideon Seaman, in his will, who has not been identified, but is probably a nephew of his wife, Mary Valentine.

The Family of Hendrick6 Van De Water (Johannes5, Hendrick4) and

the Family of Albertus6 Van De Water (Johannes5, Hendrick4)

There is a considerable amount of overlap between these two families, so they are being considered together.  It is not certain that Albertus ever married, but he was assumed to have by Ledley26 based on the relationships between those assumed to be the children of either Hendrick or Albertus.  Some additional details about them help clarify those relationships, but do not resolve them.

Hendrick5 is thought to have married three times: first to Elizabeth Skillman, then Susannah Ketelhuyn, and finally Catherine Collier.  While his first two marriages are confirmed by the witnesses at the baptism of his children and the record of his second marriage, his third marriage is less certain, though quite probable.

Hendrick’s first daughter, Annetje6 (#112) married first, Jonas Martin, not Annetje6 Van De Water (William5, Hendrick4) (#65), as Ledley supposed27.  She was named as the wife of Jonas Martin in the will of her grandfather, Thomas Skillman.28  She probably married second Jan Mannachen.  It is unknown if she had any children.

Hendrick moved to Bushwick by 1731 (not 1738), when his family appears in the census that year of Bushwick, NY, having 1 male over 10, 3 males under 10, and 1 female over 10.29  Hendrick’s first wife was deceased by that time.  The female over 10 was his first daughter, Annetje, while his second daughter, Johanna, had apparently died.  Two of the males under 10 were his sons, David6 and John6, the third male being probably Benjamin or Hendrick.  Ledley doubted the identification of David8 Vandewater (#177) (Cornelius7, Jacobus6, Cornelius5, Jacobus4, Benjamin3, Jacob2, Claes1) and speculated that he might actually be this David, son of Hendrick and Susannah.  However, that David was likely the son of a Uriah Vandewater.30  John6, baptized on 13 Sep 1727, married Margaret Pulver before 04 Jan 1755 when their first child, Hendrick7(not included by Ledley) was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church at Rhinebeck, NY.31  They moved to Livingston, Columbia, NY.  His supposed son, Benjamin6, probably did not exist. He was placed here based on the possibility that his supposed uncle, Peter, was the Peter Vandewater of Westbury, noted earlier, but he was not.  Also, as Ledley noted, Benjamin was not a name that was found among the descendants of Hendrick4 Vandewater.  Ledley placed Hendrick6, husband of Elizabeth and lived in New Jersey, here by a process of elimination, and in review this does appear to be the best placement.  He is probably the Henry Vanderwater who was a defendant in a Supreme Court of New Jersey in 1764.31a  He is probably the Henry Vandewaters in the Tax Ratables of New Brunswick, South Ward, Middlesex Co., NJ 1778,32 while he or his son Henry was the Henry Vandewater, West Precinct, Somerset Co., NJ 1785.  In the 1791 Tax Ratables of the East Precinct (later Franklin Township), Somerset Co., NJ there is a David Vandewaters,33 possibly his son, named after his uncle.  Hendrick or his son, Henry, is probably the Henry listed in the 1796 Tax Ratables of the Eastern Precinct, and a Peter Vandewater is listed in the 1815 Tax Ratables of Franklin Township, Somerset Co., NJ.34  Hendrick is probably the 3rd male child in the 1731 census.

By his third wife, Catherine, he had three known children: Margaret6, Catherine, and Elsje, all baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush, NY.  He supposedly had two other children, Burger6 and Baefje6, who could have alternately been the children of his brother, Albertus5, as both names are associated with their paternal grandparents.  Burger married Margaret May on 30 Dec 1767.  Baefje married Andrew Van Horn on 30 Dec 1767.  Margaret married Barnabas Van Horn on 26 Mar 1787.35  Burger’s will, written in 1815 in NYC, proved in 1819,36 mentions his wife, Mary, his brother, John, his sister Baefje, wife of Andrew Van Horn, his sister, Peggy Van Horn, and his nephew, Burger Van Horn, son of Baefje.  On 19 Mar 1819, John Vandewater and Margaret, his wife, Andrew Van Horn and Baefje, his wife, Margaret Van Horn, widow, and Burger Van Horn, and Ann [Van Buskirk], married 12 Feb 1801 in Bergen, NJ],37 his wife, sold land they inherited, personally attesting to the sale on that day by each of the sellers.

Ledley supposes that Albertus5 probably married and may have had children named Burger, Baefje, John, Mary, and Albertus, but this was a best placement for each of them.  As noted, Burger and Baefje could have been children of either Hendrick or Albertus.  John married Margaret Van Buskirk on 19 Oct 177238 in the Lutheran Church, and Baefje and her husband, Andrew Van Horn, served as witnesses for the baptism of John’s son, John, in 1782, suggesting a close family relationship.  Mary married Samuel Thomas on 31 May 1773 in the same Lutheran Church that her presumed brother John was married in.  Albertus was placed in this family as he appears in the 1790 census of NYC and is not likely to have been an otherwise known Albertus, but nothing else is known of him.  He does not appear in the 1789-1800 NYC Directories.39  He may be Albertus (#95), husband of Patty Seaman, whom Ledley thought died in 1787, but may have died in NYC as late as Sep 1790 (see earlier), the women being his wife and two youngest daughters, though the other male is unknown.

There are several factors to consider in sorting out these two families, including:

  1. Albertus could have had a daughter named Margaret, named after her paternal aunt, as Hendrick did.  If so, Burger’s will would not necessarily help in sorting out the two families.

  2. Albertus’ supposed daughter, Mary, could have been a daughter of Hendrick as there is a gap of 13 years, noted by Ledley, between when he married in 1737 and 1750 when his next known child was baptized.

  3. Albertus’ supposed son, Albertus, could be place elsewhere, for instance as Albertus7 Van De Water (Cornelius6, Albertus5, Hendrick4, Jan3, Hendrick2, Abraham1), if he was not the Albertus who was buried in 1758 as Ledley presumed.  Also, he could also be a son of Albertus’s brother, Hendrick5, named after his paternal uncle, born in that gap.

  4. As a first cousin of Albertus’ presumed son, John, Baefje may have been a natural choice as a witness for his son John, not just siblings, especially if he had no siblings.

  5. The fellowbondsman for the marriage of Baefje and Andrew Van Horn was Peter Vande (rest missing), gentleman.  The surname is probably Vandewater, but there are no known close relatives of Baefje named Peter, if as presented here, Peter of Westbury was not the son of Johannes5.  This Peter is possibly an undocumented son of Hendrick Vandewater and Catherine Collier, named after his probable maternal grandfather, Peter Colyer (see Catherine above), born about 1738.  He may be the Peter Vandewater who was one of the witnesses to the will of John Hunt of Bushwick (see above).  If correct, this Peter would be John Hunt’s wife’s first cousin and Lucas Burbanck’s step-son.

  6. John, brother of Burger, living in Livingston, Columbia Co., NY, would have been 91 years old in 1819 when Burger’s heirs sold his land.  It is not known when John died, but having both John and his wife alive in 1819 and willing to travel over 100 miles to attest to the deed is surprising, casting some doubt on whether or not this is the correct John identified as his brother.  A younger, closer brother, such as John, husband of Margaret Van Buskirk, seems more likely, but that would only be possible if Hendrick, husband of Catherine Collier, was not the same as Hendrick, husband of Elizabeth Skillman and Susannah Ketelhuyn, which is not likely.

  7. Being younger, John, husband of Margaret Van Buskirk, could have been a grandson of Hendrick by his son David, not a son of Albertus.  Though not included in Burger’s will, it was not written in such a way as to imply that all his siblings or their descendants would necessarily be included.  Neither Burger’s presumed brother, Hendrick, nor his sister, Annetje [though she may have died without heirs] were included.

Given the uncertainties noted above, the genealogical summary presented here will list Burger and Baefje as children of Hendrick, not Albertus6.  John, husband of Margaret Van Buskirk, Mary, and Albertus, though uncertain, will still be presented as children of Albertus.

Nothing is known for certain of John7 Vandewater, son of Albertus6, and his wife, Margaret Van Buskirk, after the baptism of their children Peter, Elizabeth, and John, in NYC.  However, they may have moved to Harrington Township, Bergen Co., NJ by 1793 where a John Vandewater was taxed that year.40  Andrew Van Horn and Baefje Vandewater had moved to Bergen Township, Bergen Co., NJ by 1799 when they purchased land there, bordering Peter Van Buskirk, supposedly Margaret’s father.41  Andrew and Baefje had probably moved there by 1793 as both Peter Van Buskirk and Andrew Van Horn were taxed in the same township.  Possible descendants for John will be presented in the “Unidentified Vandewaters” section.

Magdalena7 Vandewater (William6, William5, Hendrick4) married John Oothout, not Magdalena8 Vandewater (Peter7, Jacobus6, Cornelius5, Jacobus4, Benjamin3) as she is not named in her father Peter’s will.  Rather, their daughter, Elizabeth, and their son, William, were named after the maternal grandparents.
