Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y." - Jacob3 Bennet (Willem2, Willem1)

Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Some of His Descendants”, by Wilson V. Ledley
Updated 1 Jun 2023

The Family of Jacob3 Bennet (Willem2, Willem1) (#22) and Neeltje Beekman

94:157. The family did not live in Brooklyn as Ledley thought very long, if at all.  He notes that he was married at the New York Dutch Church and all of their children were baptized there.  Jacob is listed in the 1698 Tax List of NYC.[1]  The family is also listed in the 1703 census on NYC.[2]

95: 165, 95: 22. Their son, William4, moved to Flatbush, N.Y. sometime before the census of 1731.[3] Their great-grandson, Abraham6 (Peter Praa5, William4), was undoubtedly the Revolutionary War pensioner who was born at Bushwick, N.Y. in November 1747.[4]  His parents were married at Newtown on 05 Apr 1747[5] and his family had moved to New Jersey by 1752 when their son William6 was baptized.[6]  According to his pension application, Abraham lived at Georges Road, the same area where his great grandfather, Peter Praa, purchased land in 1733.[7]

95: 165. Jannetje, wife of Abraham6 (Peter Praa5, William4) was probably the daughter of Peter Praa Meserole and his wife, Femmetje.  Their son, Peter Praa Meserole Bennet7, was probably named after both his maternal and paternal grandfathers.  Peter Praa Meserole’s will[8] mentions his daughter, Jannetje.  Though it was proved 8 Apr 1778, the estate was not settled for over twenty years, so the court appointed a new executor, with Abraham6 Bennet as the fellowbondsman.

95: 165.  Peter Praa5 (William4) probably had several other grandchildren, based on the 1830 census of North Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ, including:  Aaron Bennet, b, between 1780-1789, no further trace; Charles Bennet, b. circa 1795, m. Jane; John T. Bennet, b. 1805, m. Maria.

95: 203.  Their great grandson, William6 (William5, William4) was not the William who had a license to marry Ann Titus on 3 Apr. 1782.  He died on 3 Sep 1858, age 96 yrs, 6 mon, (see: https://www.green-wood.com/scans/Volume%2008/Volume%2008_081.jpg) so born in Mar 1762.  However, the husband of Ann Titus died before 2 Oct 1825 when she joined the RDC of Bushwick, NY, noted as the widow of the late William Bennet (see Bushwick Church Records, Consistory Minutes at Ancestry.com); see William6 (Jacob5, William4) for her husband.  He was probably living with his father in the 1790 census of Bushwick, unmarried, along with his all his brothers, mother, and two unmarried sisters.  He is probably the William Bennet of Bushwick who sold land in NYC on 11 May 1792 (Kings Co., NY Deeds, Vol 50, pg. 301) to George Duryea, husband of his first cousin, Sarah Cannon, witnessed by his sister, Neeltje Bennet, and his cousin, Teunis Duryea, but no wife joined in the sale.  He married Sarah Cannon Duryea shortly after she is named in the will of her father, Abraham Cannon, dated 6 May 1809, as Sally Duryea, widow, and William Bennet is named as one of the executors (NY, NY Wills, vol. 49, pg. 312.)  Abraham’s later probate (online at: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G995-JJ5G?i=1755&wc=Q756-3TP%3A213306101%2C224119301&cc=1920234) mentions that after his death, Sally Duryea married William W. Bennet, one of the executors of her father’s will.  They were probably married by the time of the 1810 census of Bushwick, NY, where the probable residents include himself as William W. Bennet, his wife, Sarah, his mother, Ann, his brother, Teunis, and three of his step-children.  Steve Eustis provided much of this research.

95: 203.  Their great grandson, Teunis6 (William5, William4) married a woman named Hannah, noted in the baptismal record of his nephew, William, on 7 Jul 1803 at the RDC of Bushwick, NY as being the witnesses.  If correct, they had no children and she died before Teunis wrote his will in 1810 as neither are mentioned.

95: 203.  Their great grandson, Richard6 (William5, William4) married first Elizabeth Jackson.

95: 203.  Their great granddaughter, Catherine6 (William5, William4) married William Cumberland, not Chamberland, according to William’s will.

95: 203.  Their great granddaughter, Amelia6 (William5, William4) was actually named Anatie, not Amelia, according to William’s will.  She or her daughter married a man named White as her daughter was referred to as Hannah White in the will of her uncle Teunis.

95:204.  Their great grandson, Jacob6 (Jacob5, William4) was probably the father of Jacob7 whose will was dated 23 Aug 1820, not his brother, William6.  Jacob7 married Sarah Conselyea on 22 Jul 1792 at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Yor, City, NY, too early to be the son of William6.

95:204.  Their great grandson, William6 (Jacob5, William4) was the William Bennet who married Ann Titus on 3 Apr 1782, not his cousin, William6 (William5, William4), see comments on that William regarding Ann.  He is probably the William Bennet living in the 1810 census of Newtown, Queens, NY, listed just after his father.  Ann was thought to be the daughter of Francis Titus and Cornelia Duryea (see Kenneth A. Bennett, “William Adriaense Bennet, Descendants and Related Families,” pg. 235), however, Francis’ will does not mention a daughter named Ann.  She was the daughter of Johannes Titus and Leah Andriessen, named after her maternal grandmother, Annetje Ryersen.  William was deceased by 10 Jan 1816 when his father, Jacob, wrote his will saying his son, William, was deceased and had three children, Elizabeth, wife of Abraham Van Alst, Leah, wife of Jacob Van Cott, and Jacob.

Letters of Administration on the estate of William’s father, Jacob5, were issued to John Van Alst and Jacob J. Bennet of Bushwick and Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Vandewater, of Newtown, on 5 Nov 1817.  Queens Co., NY, Letters of Administration, pg. 39.

A subsequent lawsuit in NY Chancery Court, see NY Chancery Court Minutes, vol 18, pg. 419, on 1 Dec 1819, lists Jacob’s heirs.  They include the children or grandchildren of his deceased daughter, Hannah, wife of John Van Alst, the children or grandchildren of his deceased son, Jacob, husband of Elizabeth Meserole, his daughter, Ann, wife of George Hunter, and the children of his deceased son, William.  William’s son, Jacob, was named after his paternal grandfather, while his daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Abraham Van Alst, was named after her paternal grandmother, and his daughter, Leah, wife of Jacob Van Cott, was named after her maternal grandmother, Leah Andriessen.  Steve Eustis provided much of this research.

95: 205, 95: 26. Their great grandson, Johannis6 (John5, James4) was not the John Bennet of Middlesex who died intestate before 21 Nov 1798.  That was John4 Bennet (Jacob3, Willem2, Willem1) as seen later.  No further trace.

95: 205, 95: 25. Their grandson, Jacob/James5 (Jacobus/James4), did not marry first an unknown woman nor second Elizabeth Voorhees.  That was Jacob5 Bennet (John4, Jacob3, Willem2, Willem1) as will be seen later.  He may be the James Bennet who was living near Spotswood[9] in 1766.  He was probably the subject of a series of lawsuits,[10] which resulted in the sale of at least some of his land near Spotswood.[11]

95: 206, 95: 207, 94: 210. Their son, Johannes4, did not marry Magdalena5 Bennet (Isaac4, Isaac3, Adriaen2, Willem1), as was seen earlier.  Nor did he marry second an unknown woman by whom he had three children.  The children of his supposed second marriage were actually the children of Johannes, an undocumented son of Joost4 Bennet (Isaac3, Adriaen2, Willem1), per the earlier discussion.

95: 26. Johannes4 probably married Anne Remsen,[12] not John4 Bennet (Jan3, Willem2, Willem1), who had an entirely different family, as seen earlier.  Johannes Bennet and Anne Remsen had six other children not listed by Ledley.  The naming of their first son and second daughter suggests his parents were Jacob Bennet and Neeltje Beekman.  Their children[13] were:

1.   Jacob5, born 18 Jan 1748/49, named after his paternal grandfather, was the administrator of his father’s estate, with his brother, Isaac, being the fellowbondsman.[14]

2.   Isaac5, baptized 14 Feb 1750/51,[15] named after his possible maternal grandfather.

3.   Susannah5, baptized 30 Sep 1753,[16] named after her paternal aunt.

4.   Johannes5, baptized 25 Apr 1756,[17] named after his father, died young.

5.   Neeltje5, baptized 22 Apr 1759,[18] named after her paternal grandmother.  She is buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at Middlebush, N.J.[19]

6.   Annetje5, baptized 25 Dec 1762,[20] named after her mother.

7.   Johannes5, baptized 19 Jan 1766,[21] named after his father.  He is buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at Middlebush, N.J.,[22] not Johannes6 Bennet (Hendrick5, Johannes4, Isaac3, Adriaen2, Willem1) as Ledley assumed, along with two of his sons, Eldred Smith6 and Henry6.

8.   Lea5, born about 1768.

Other records that probably pertain to him indicate that he was of age by 1731:

1)   He was probably the witness of the bond between Cornelius Vanderhoven and his presumed brother and father, Jacobus and Jacobus Bennet, in 1730.[23]

2)   He is probably the Jan Bennet listed as a member of the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick about 1732.[24]

3)   He was likely the witness of the 1742 deed between the children of Adriaen Bennet and Barbara Vonk.[25]

95: 205. Their grandson, Jacob5 (Johannes4), married first an unknown woman, possibly Susan Outcalt,[26] and second Elizabeth Voorhees.  Jacob’s father was named John,[27] not Jacob as Ledley assumed.  The fellowbondsman for his marriage license[28] to Elizabeth Voorhees was Isaac5 Bennet, his brother.

95: 27. Their grandson, Isaac5 (Johannes4), supposedly had four children.  The baptismal records of three of them, Hannah6, John6 and Isaac6, are recorded at the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick.[29]  The fourth child is probably Caty6, daughter of Isack and Misay Bentej, baptized[30] on 19 Feb 1792.

95: 27. Their granddaughter, Neeltje5 (Johannes4), had no children.  The will[31] of her husband, Richard Garretson, makes bequests to his wife, Nelly, and others, but no children. His real estate was to be sold and $400 given to Richard Garretson Barkelow (or Richard’s brothers and sisters if he dies before reaching the age of 21), $400 given in trust for “my black woman”, Peggy, and at her death to “my black man”, Harry, with the remainder of the receipts of the sale given one-half to his nephews Henry Bennet and Richard Demott, and the other half to Hannah, wife of Farrington Barkelow, Isaac, son of Isaac Bennett, Elen, daughter of John Bennett and Ellen Maria, daughter of William Hines.  Hannah was the daughter of Neeltje’s brother, Jacob, by his first wife.  Richard Barkelow was probably the son of James Barkelow[32], son of Farrington Barkelow and Hannah Bennet, Neeltje’s niece.  Elen was probably Neeltje, daughter of Neeltje’s brother, John Bennet, and Dina Smith, since Jacob Bennet’s son, John, did not have a daughter named Ellen.[33]  Isaac was probably the son of Neeltje’s brother, Isaac Bennet, and Maria Melcher.  Neeltje’s brothers, Jacob and John, both had sons named Henry, as shown by Jacob’s will and Elderd Smith’s will,[34] respectively, so which received the bequest is unclear.

95: 27. Their granddaughter, Annetje5 (Johannes4), married Abraham Hoogland.[35]  They had two children, Mary6 and Abraham6, baptized at the Reformed Church of Six Mile Run.[36]  Their other children were Geroge6, John6, Hannah6, Neeltje6, James6, Margaret6, Derrick6, Jacob6, Elizabeth6 and Abraham6.[37]

95: 27. Their grandson, Johannes5 (Johannes4), married Dina Smith.  He is mentioned as John Bennet, son-in-law, in the will[38] of his father-in-law, Elderd Smith.  Also mentioned in the will is John’s wife, Dina, and their children, Elderd Smith6, Jonathan6, Isaac6, Henry6 and Nelly6.  He was probably the John Bennet, Jr., who was called as a witness in the Supreme Court Case[39] for Abraham Hoogland, probably his brother-in-law.

95: 27. Their granddaughter, Leah5 (Johannes4), and her husband, Abraham Sperling had several children, as mentioned in his will,[40] however only his son John Gilliand6 is mentioned by name.  John Gilliand was baptized on 10 Oct 1800.[41]
