The Parents and Family of Peter Hessels of Bergen, NJ

Peter Hessels is known to have been the nephew of Guert Ccerten, named as such in Guert’s will.[1]  Guert’s will also mentions that he was of Voorthuysen [Voorthuizen], The Netherlands.  Guert’s will mentions his brother, Harmen Coerten, who was also from Voorthuiszen.[2]  A review of available records show that surviving church records from Voorthuizen only begin in 1682,[3] long after Peter had left the Netherlands, as he married Elizabeth Gerrits at the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City on 13 Oct 1667.[4]  However, church records at the nearby village of Putten, The Netherlands, contain much information regarding the parents and siblings of Peter Hessels.

The marriage records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Putten, The Netherlands, include the record on the marriage of Harmen Cours, of Voorthuysen, and Aertje Gerrits, Gerrit Jansz daughter, of Kootwijk on 15 Apr 1639.[5]  He is undoubtedly the brother of Guert Coerten. 

The records there also include the marriage of Elsken Coerten, of Voorthuysen, and Hessel Gerrits on 8 Mar 1629.[6]  Based on her surname, her location at marriage and the name of her son, Peter, she is almost certainly the sister of Harmen and Guert.  All of her six known children from her first marriage were baptized in Putten:
1)      Gerrit, baptized 28 Nov 1630,[7]
2)      Aelt, baptized 09 Sep 1632,[8]
3)      Maryken, baptized 17 Aug 1634,[9]
4)      Gerbrechtje, baptized 17 Jul 1636,[10]
5)      Peter, baptized 26 Jan 1638/39,[11] and
6)      Maryken, baptized 24 Oct 1641.[12]
Hessel Gerrits died shortly after that as Elsken Coerten, widow of Hessel Gerrits, married second Hendrick Jansz of Crachtichuysen on 24 Apr 1642 at Putten.[13]  Elsken had one child by her second marriage, also baptized at Putten:
1) Hessel, baptized 22 May 1643.[14]

Unfortunately, there is a gap in the records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Putten after 1665.  Aelt Hessels, son of Hessel Gerritsens, married Engeltjen Harmens, widow, on 17 Jul 1664.[15]  Besides Peter, nothing more was found of the descendants of Elsken Coerten.  Peter Hessel’s marriage record[16] says he was of Nijkerk, a village about 5.5 miles from Putten.
