The Family of Michael, son of John Vandervoort and Magdalena Huysman

The Family of Michael, son of John Vandervoort and Magdalena Huysman

As noted in the earlier post “The Family of John3 Vandervoort (Paul2, Michael1) and Magdalena Huysman,” Wilson V. Ledley’s article, “The Vandervoort-Vanderford Family”, published in the RECORD only went through the third generation.[1]  In his discussion of John3 Van Der Voort (Paul2, Michael1), he mentions that his family as listed in the Brooklyn, NY, Census of 1738 was quite large and suggested that John’s son, Charel4, and his family was living with them at the time.  Though never published, his notes suggest that he believed Charel’s children[2] included:
  1. Abraham, born about 1726,
  2. Jacob, born about 1728,
  3. Jan, baptized 29 Aug 1731, and
  4. Michael, born about 1724 or 1733.
However, Ledley did not know that the Brooklyn Census was taken in 1731, not 1738.[3]  Because of his baptismal record, Jan,[4] is known to be a son of Charles.  The other three males must have been born by 1721 and thus must be children of Jan and Magdalena as Charles, baptized 12 Sep 1703,[5] would have been too young to have children that old.

There are no primary source records that show who the parents of Michael were.  However, his parents were almost certainly Jan Vandervoort and Magdalena Huysman based on the naming of their children and his migration to the area around New Brunswick, NJ, where his sibling also went.

Michael was born about 1714 and married Mary Fonteyn about 1744, given the baptismal dates of their children listed below.  Mary was the daughter of Jacques and Mary Fonteyn,[6] baptized 04 Dec 1726.[7]  Michael died before 15 Feb 1762 when Mary is named as Mary Van Dervoort, widow of Michael Van Dervoort in the arbitration bond of the estate of her grandfather, Jacques Fonteyn.[8]  As Mary Vandervorte she married second John Henderson, Sr. on 27 Mar 1770, where she is listed as being of Sussex Co., NJ[9] (where several of her children lived).

Their children included (baptized at First Reformed Church of New Brunswick, NJ and Reformed Dutch Church, Six Mile Run, NJ)[10]:
  1. Mary, baptized 12 May 1745, named after her maternal grandmother and her mother.
  2. Magdalena, baptized 15 Jan 1748/49, named after her paternal grandmother.
  3. Jannetje, baptized 07 Apr 1751.
  4. Annetje, baptized 23 Sep 1753, named after her maternal aunt.
  5. Charles, baptized 18 Jan 1756, named after his maternal grandfather
  6. John, baptized 15 Jan 1758, named after his paternal grandfather
Michael himself was named after his paternal uncle and his wife, Mary, was named after her mother.

Several of Michael’s younger siblings, discussed in later posts, also settled in the area around New Brunswick, NJ.  His sister, Styntje, and her husband, Abraham Voorhees, settled in Bridgewater, Somerset Co., NJ.  His sister, Adrianna, and her husband, Albert Voorhees (brother of Abraham), settled in Somerset Co., NJ.  His sister, Magdalena, and her husband, John Messerol, settled in New Brunswick, NJ.

As son of John Vandervoort and Magdalena Huysman, this is the best placement for Michael.  John’s brother, Michael[11], had a son named Michael who married Jannete Wessels,[12] but she was still living when her maternal grandfather, Joris Martense Ryersen, wrote his will on 27 Jul 1744,[13] so he did not marry second Mary Fonteyn.  Of the sons of his brother, Paul, and his wife, Neeltje, only John appears to have been old enough to have had a grandson by 1745.[14]  John’s two oldest sons were named after their grandfathers.[15]  Even if he had an undocumented son named Michael, it is very unlikely he would have been born early enough to have had a child by 1745.
