Notes on the Descendants of Teuntje, Daughter of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt

Notes on the Descendants of Teuntje, Daughter of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt

This post is a follow-up of an earlier one entitled “Notes on the Family of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland.”  That post provided an overview of the research on the family.  It included comments and corrections on the family of Matthias Lane and several of his supposed children.

As mentioned in the earlier post, Matthias’ daughter was named Teuntje, not Tryntje as thought earlier by some.  She married Jan Jansen Van Dyck, and besides her name, the work of Richard Cook, “Van Dycks” will form the basis for the discussion of this family.[1]

The Family of Tryntje3 Van Dyck (Teuntje2 Lane, Matthias1 Lane) and Daniel Hendrickson

Their daughter, Tryntje3, married Daniel Hendrickson. His will[2] mentioned his four sons and seven daughters, detailed by George Beekman.[3]

However, their daughter, Geesje4, probably did not have a daughter named Engeltje.  Beekman identified her as being baptized on 28 Apr 1732, but there was no baptism that day.  He probably confused her with Engeltje, daughter of Nicholas Van Brunt and Geesje Hendrickson (a different Geesje) who was baptized a few days earlier on 23 Apr 1732.[4]  No other record of Engeltje has been found.

Their daughter, Catherine4, wife of Henry Disbrow/Duseberry, moved to Cranbury, Middlesex, NJ, and had four other children listed in Henry’s will,[5] not mentioned by Beekman: Daniel5, Henry, Joseph and Catherine.  Henry served as one of the administrators for the estate of his brother-in-law, John Hendrickson,[6] of Middlesex, NJ in 1740.

Eva, Supposed Daughter Of Teuntje2 Lane (MatthiasLane) and Jan Jansen Van Dyck

Teuntje Lane and Jan Jansen Van Dyck did not have a daughter named Eva.[6a]   The maiden name of the wife of Steven Coerten Van Voorhees is only known as her patronymic name of Jansen.  She was thought to be daughter of Jan Jansen Van Dyck because of the mention of his grandson, John Stevens, in Jan Jansen's will.[6b]  However, as will be seen below, John4 Stevens was the son of CatalyntjeVan Dyck and her husband, Lucas Stevenson, not Eva.  Eva does not appear in Jan Jansen's will, nor in any other known record.

The Family of Mayke3 Van Dyck (Teuntje2 Lane, Matthias1 Lane) and Johannes Richaud

Mayke married Johannes Richaud, who was previously unmarried, on 21 Apr 1694.[7]  Their family is described by George McCracken.[8]  The 1698 Census of New Utrecht, NY[9] lists four children: Deianen, Abreham, Adolfes, Tuentien.  The first is probably Daniel, noted as the oldest son in the 1706 Staten Island census.[10]  Teuntje is named in the will of her grandfather, Jan Van Dyck.[11]  Abreham and Adolfes are questionable, especially as the couple has a son named Jan baptized in 1696,[12] but not listed here.  Having five children within four years would be very unusual, and the 1698 Census of Kings Co., NY, only notes three children (under the name Eigo) in the household.[13]  Given that Daniel, Jan and Teuntje were all named after their grandparents, and Abraham and Adolf were not names of immediate family members, it seems likely that Abraham and Adolf were mistakes and that Jan is the third child listed in the 1698 Census of Kings Co., NY.

Another possible daughter of Mayke is Catline4.  She has been identified as the daughter of Paul and Jane Richaud.[14]  However, she appears to be more closely related to Johannes.  She married Andre Escord before 28 Jul 1728 when her daughter, Esther, was baptized.[15]  The witnesses were Isaac Richaud (Cataline’s half or full-brother; Paul had no known son named Isaac) and Esther Escord (not specified as Isaac’s wife, probably Andre’s mother or sister.)  Her daughter, Maria, was baptized on 4 Jan 1730,[16] the witnesses being Pieter Wynants (husband of Catherine Richaud, Catline’s paternal aunt, so equally close to Johannes and Paul), and Catharina Wynants, Pieter’s daughter.  A Daniel Escord was a witness for the baptism of Elsje,[17] daughter of Johannes Richaud and Amy Cobert[18] on 20 Oct 1728.  Catline’s daughter, Maria, was likely named after her maternal grandmother, Mayke, though Catline could be the daughter of Johannes Richaud’s second wife, Amy Corbet, or the daughter of Paul Richaud as previously thought.

The Family of Jan3 Van Dyck (Teuntje2 Lane, Matthias1 Lane) and Annetje Ver Kerk

The children of Teuntje4 and her husband, John Emans, are listed in his will[19] written on 3 Mar 1752 in Readington, NJ.  Most of their children were baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Readington.  Curiously, her children are not given a legacy in the will of her brother, Isaac.[20]

The children of Catherine4 and her husband, Gerardus Beekman, are listed in his will written 4 Aug 1777 at [21] Millstone, Somerset, NJ.  She is not mentioned in the will, so she presumably was deceased by then.

The wife of their son, Simon4, was Anne, daughter of Hendrick Gulick and Catherine Amerman.[22]  Simon and Anne had another daughter, Anne5, baptized on 29 May 1748 at the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ.[23]

They probably did not have a second son named Abraham as listed by Cook.[24]  He was supposedly a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, but he is not mentioned in his presumed father’s will[25] written in 1757, nor in the will of his brother, Isaac,[26] written in 1792.

Their daughter, Anna4, did not marry Albert Voorhees, even though the abstract of her father’s will,[27] written in 1757, names her husband as Albert Voorhees.  That marriage is not supported in The Van Voorhees Family in America.[28]  It is mentioned in the “Ancestral Line of the Somerset Van Dykes,”[29] and Cook[30] added the marriage to Albert Terhune, not realizing that Albert Voorhees was a mistake.  The baptismal of records of four of the children of Albert Terhune and Annetje Van Dyck[31] show they were married before and after her father wrote his will.  She is named as the wife of Albert Terhune will of her brother, Isaac, written 6 Jul 1792.[32]

Their other three children: Maria, Abraham, and Isaac, are mentioned in Albert’s will.[33]

The Family of Catalyntje3 Van Dyck (Teuntje2 Lane, Matthias1 Lane) and Lucas Stephenson

Catalyntje3 married 1st Lucas Stephenson with license dated 19 Jul 1703.[34]  They had two children:

      1)   John4, mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Jan Van Dyck,[35] and

      2)   Teuntje, bapt. 26 Jan 1707,[36] witnesses were Teuntje Van Dyck (the maternal grandmother), Michael Janse (brother-in-law of Lucas), and Olfert Sjoerts (husband of Lucas’ aunt).  She married John Slecht on 05 Sep 1728.[37]  She married 2nd Hendrick Wessels on 29 Nov 1736.[38]  Hendrick Wessels died before 26 Sep 1751 when letters of administration were granted to his wife, Teuntje, and Jacobus Wessels.[39].

As Catharia Stevens, she married 2nd Gerrit Keteltas on 22 Oct 1709.[39a]

The Family of Matthias3 Van Dyck (Teuntje2 Lane, Matthias1 Lane) and Agnes Van Brunt?

Agnes, wife of Matthias3 Van Dyck was probably the daughter of Cornelius Van Brunt and Tryntje Bennet.[40] She was baptized on 30 Jun 1689 in Brooklyn, NY,[41] married, had children,[42] and died before 1 Apr 1738 when Matthias married 2nd Orionta [Adriaentje] Hooffa.[43]  She and her husband, Matthias, were the witnesses for the baptism of her niece, Agnes, daughter of her brother Nicholas.[44]  Her husband, Matthias, and his second wife, Adriaentje, were witnesses for Agnes’ niece, Agnes Pietersen, daughter of  her sister Neeltje Van Brunt, and her husband Dirck Pietersen, on 25 Dec 1738.[45]  The naming of their children also supports this (in probable birth order):

1.      John4, after his paternal grandfather (no other sons)

2.      Catherine, after her maternal grandmother,

3.      Teuntje, after her paternal grandmother,

4.      Agnes, after her mother,

5.      Jannetje, after her paternal aunt,

6.      Mary, after her maternal aunt,

7.      Mayke, after her paternal aunt,

8.      Engeltje,

9.      Margaret, after her maternal aunt.

Matthias and Adriaentje Van Dyck sold land on 14 Feb 1743.[46]  She died before Matthias wrote his will on March 8, 1748/9.[47]

Cook[48] mentions the 1738 Census of Kings Co., NY,[49] (which he didn’t know was actually taken in 1731), which includes 2 males under 10 that he did not list.  However, the census does not line up well with what is known about the family.  For instance, there are a total of four males in the count, but Matthias had only one known son.  Since little detail is included, no conclusions can be drawn from the apparent contradiction, but it is worth noting.

The wife of John4 Van Dyck was Margaret, daughter of Nicholas Volkertsen and Neeltje Van Couwenhoven, mentioned as such in Nicholas’s will.[50]  Their daughter, Annanatie5, wife of Isaac Snedeker, named in John’s will, was almost certainly actually Agnes, wife of Isaac Snedeker, who names his wife, Agnes, and his brothers-in-law, Matthias Van Dyke and Nicholas Van Dyke, in his will.[51]  Slightly out of order (after Jannetje4), Cook lists John’s son Matthias5, who married Sarah Vanderbilt with license dated 08 Jul 1766.[52]

Their daughter, Catherine4, married 1st David Godwin.  They had at least two children: David, baptized 3 Apr 1737,[53] her sister Mary being one of the witnesses; and Catharine, baptized on 17 Mar 1745,[54] her brother Jan and his wife, Margareta Folkerts being the witnesses.  Catherine supposedly married 2nd Hendrick Van Borre[55] (Boerum?), but this has not been confirmed by the current author.  This 2nd marriage could be confused with Hendrick Boerum who married a different Tryntje (Catherine) Van Dyck on Nov 1710.[56]

Their daughter, Teuntje4, married Folkert Van Hoesen.  They were of Kings Co., NY on 2 May 1749 when they sold land in Kings Co., NY, willed to her by her father, to John Van Dyck.[57]

Their daughter, Mary4, and Joseph Fenton had six other children, mentioned in his will:[58] Joseph5, John, Benjamin, Matthias, Cornelius, and Helen.  Agnes is not mentioned, so presumably she died young.

Their daughter, Margaret4, married Isaac Bennet and had eleven children.[59]

The Family of Jannetje3 Van Dyck (Teuntje2 Lane, Matthias1 Lane) and Rutger Van Brunt

The family of Jannetje3 Van Dyck and Rutger Van Brunt was outlined by Teunis Bergen.[60]  Their daughter, Aeltje4, married 1st Joseph Ditmars on 3 Oct 1730.[61]  Their daughter, Elizabeth5, was baptized[62] on 1 Aug 1731, the paternal grandparents, Laurence Ditmarz and his wife Elizabeth [Hegeman], being the witnesses.  Elizabeth appears to have died young as no children are listed in Joseph Ditmars’ household in the fall of 1731 census.[63]  Joseph died on 22 Mar 1732.[64]

The Family of Agnes3 Van Dyck (Teuntje2 Lane, Matthias1 Lane) and Simon De Hart

The children of Agnes3 Van Dyck and Simon De Hart are given in his will[65] as Simon, Geertje, Teuntje, Jannetje, Agnes[66] and Tryntje.[67]  Not included in his will was Mayke, baptized on 18 May 1729,[68] but apparently died young.
