The Van Hise Family
The descendants of Auke Jans VAN NUYS and Magdalena Van Langendyck
adopted four different surnames: Van Nuys, Van Hise, Ouke, and Johnson. The current author was unable to find a written genealogy
the early members of the Van Hise branch.
Little is known for certain, but this blog post is an attempt at bringing
together various strands of the family in hopes of creating a framework for further
research.
The family appears to be descended from two branches of the Van Nuys family. The largest part are the descendants of Auke3
Van Nuys/Hise (Jacobus2, Auke1) and the smaller part are some
of the descendants of Isaac3 Van Nuys (Jacobus2, Auke1). The families sometimes alternated between the
two surnames over time, and occasionally within the same document. Because of that fluctuation, it is not certain
that the Van Hise surname was not adopted by a few other branches.
The Family of Auke3 Van Hise and Aeltje Amerman
Auke3 Van Nuys/Hise (Jacobus2, Auke1)
and Aeltje Amerman (daughter of Dirk Amerman and Aeltje Vanderbeek) were married on 1 Dec 1715 at the Reformed Church of Flatbush.[1] They lived at New Utrecht in 1731,[2] where
the family is listed with 5 boys 10 and under, 3 women over 10 (besides Aeltje),
and one girl under 10. Their children can
be summarized as follows:
1)
a daughter, born about 1717;
2) Mary, born about 1719, named after
her paternal grandmother, married Cornelius Van Houten about 1742;
3) Catherine, baptized 23 Jun 1721,[3] named
after her maternal aunt;
4) James, named after his paternal grandfather,
named as his son in Auke's probate record, probably the eldest son;[4]
5) a son;
6) a son;
7) John, named after his paternal and
maternal uncles, the bondsman for Auke’s estate, no further trace;
8) Elizabeth, named after her paternal
aunt, married a Griggs;[5] and
9) Isaac, baptized 16 Jan 1731/32,[6] born
before the 1731 census, named after his paternal and maternal uncles. No further trace.
Estimating Aeltje’s birth at about 1690, she may
have had another child born after the census.
He was of New Utrecht on 4 Aug 1722 when he sold[7] a house
and an acre of land in Flatlands to Johannes Van Sicklen. The family was apparently planning a move to Oyster
Bay, but wound up selling the land there at public auction on 5 May 1736.[8] They moved to Middlesex Co., NJ by 1752 when he
is listed as a freeholder in New Brunswick (which included North and South Brunswick
at the time).[9]
Auke died before 12 Apr 1755 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex, NJ, when letters of administration
were issued to his son, James, his widow having renounced her right.[10] John Van Huys, presumably his son, was the bondsman. Both James and John were of South Amboy at the
time. The records of the Reformed Church
of Flatlands, NY,[11] include
payments on 4 May 1756 and 14 Jul 1756 from Auke Van Nuys, presumably from his estate.
Of Auke’s children, only his daughter, Mary, has been traced further. She married Cornelius Van Houten, son of Johannes
Van Houten and Tryntje Pieters,[12] before
07 Oct 1743 when their eldest known child was baptized.[12a] Their children were:
1) Catherine, baptized 7 Oct 1743, named
after her paternal grandmother, witnesses were Jacobus Van Nuys and Gerrebreghie Van Nuis, probably her uncle and his probable wife Gerebrechtje Amerman.
2) Aeltje, baptized 18 Mar 1746/47, named
after her maternal grandmother;
3) Johannes, baptized 01 Jun 1750, named
after his paternal grandfather; and
4) Ouke, baptized 22 Oct 1758, named after
his maternal grandfather.
Descendants of Isaac3 Van Nuys (Jacobus2, Auke1)
The children of Isaac3 Van Nuys frequently appear
with the surname Van Hise, most often in the records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Harlingen,
NJ,[13] where
many of his grandchildren were baptized.
The use is not consistent within families. Among those who stayed in New Jersey, Van Nuys
appears to be the standard surname used.
Among those who moved to Kentucky, Van Hise was still used frequently. Though some may have adopted Van Hise as their
standard surname, for purposes of this discussion I am not assuming any did. Given that Auke Van Nuys/Hise had five sons, it
is possible that most of the families who adopted Van Hise as their surname are
descended from him.
Isolated Early Van Hise Records
The following are isolated early
records of members of the Van Hise family.
Since there is so little information, it is uncertain if the record is just
an isolated use of the surname Van Hise.
I have listed them here so they can be considered on a case-by-case basis.
JOHN
VAN HISE, b. circa 1732, NJ. He was a low
Dutchman who broke out of the Trenton Jail in 1780, age 48.[14] He could the son of Auke & Aeltje van Hise,
if he was slightly older than the age given in the newspaper.
JOHN VAN HISE, age 19, in included in the 1793 Military Census of North Brunswick,
Middlesex, N,[15]
so born in 1774. He may be the John Van Hise,
age 40 in New Brunswick, NJ, who enrolled in the military on 17 May 1814.[16] He
was awarded land in Calhoun Co., IL on 21 Apr 1818 for his service, but it is
unclear if he ever claimed it.
JOHN VAN HISE, m. JANE West, a widow on 3 Jul 1814, Monmouth, NJ.[17] They appear to be the family of John Van Hise
listed in the 1830 census of Freehold, Monmouth, NJ, he being 40-50, his wife 50-60,
with a son and daughter, both under 5.
JAMES VAN HISE, son of Auke, may be the James Van Hiser of Middlesex, NJ who was the victim of
petty larceny and whose case was prosecuted in 1783.[18] He may also be the James Van Huis who served as a juror in a Supreme Court case involving Hendrick Hogland in Middlesex, NJ in 1784. He may be the Jacobus Van Nise in the 1779 Tax listing of North Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ, taxed on 160 acres. A John Van Nise, single man, is also listed.
GARRET VAN HISE is listed in the Tax Ratables of 1786 in South Amboy, Middlesex,
NJ. His presence in South Amboy suggests
he may be one of the unknown sons of Auke & Aeltje van Hise, or possibly a grandson.
ABRAHAM VAN HISE, b. circa 1745, NJ; d. after 1767; m. CATHERINE HOOGLAND; b. circa
1746, NJ. He is mentioned in the will of
his father-in-law, Gerrit Hoogland, written at New Brunswick and dated 30 Jul 1767.[19] He may be the Abram Van Hise of South Amboy, Middlesex,
in the tax lists of 1780, 1782-1786, and 1789.
He may be one of the unknown sons of Auke Van Hise or a grandson. He may be the same person as the next Abraham
if Catherine was a first wife of his.
ABRAHAM VAN HISE, died. bef. 10 Jun 1793, Southward,[20]
Perth Amboy, Middlesex, NJ; m. GEERTJE UNKNOWN.
In his will his wife to inherit everything and was the sole executrix, so
he likely had no children. He is probably
the Abraham/Abram Vanhice of South Amboy in tax lists of 1780, 1782-1786, and 1789.
ABRAHAM VAN HISE, b. bef. 1772, NJ; d. aft. 23 Aug 1792; m. HUCHE UNKNOWN. They sold land to John Storey who sold it on 23
Aug 1792 to Benjamin & Isaac Storey, sons of James Storey, dec'd.[21] They appear to have obtained the land by a survey on 7 Oct 1761 and 2 deeds in 1768 and 1769, but I can't track down those deeds to
verify them. It could be that the survey and the 2 deeds specified were to John
Story (he had a survey done that same day) and the 4th property was by deed but
date unspecified, from Abraham and Huche.
The survey to John Story was done on 7 Oct 1761: 89.21 acres. In New Brunswick; near Cranberry
Brook; near Georges Road; near Basses Line; Middlesex County. He may be the same Abraham who contributed to
the salary subscription at the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ about 1785.[22]
ISAAC VAN HISE is included in the tax lists of 1785 and 1786 of South Amboy. Given the location, he may be a son or grandson
of Auke Van Hise.
ISAAC VAN HISE is included in the tax lists of 1772, 1778, and 1789 of South Brunswick. He contributed to the salary subscription at the
First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ about 1785, along with Abraham, mentioned
earlier. He
may be the Isaac Van Hise buried in that church’s cemetery in 1795, or he may be the same Isaac Van Hise
was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ in 1806
ISAAC
VAN HISE, b. 1790-1800, is listed in the 1840 census of Franklin, Hunterdon, NJ
with 2 sons under 10, 1 daughter under 10 and a wife b. 1800-1810, no further trace. This appears to be the family of Isaac Van Hise
and Sarah Thompson whose family lived near Trenton, though both he and his wife
were 10 years younger than this record implies.
ISAAC VAN HISE, b. circa 1783, NJ; m. LANEY
DAVIS, 13 Feb 1808, Mercer Co., KY. His name
is written Isaac Van Nice in the permission of Laney Davis's mother, Peggy. In the marriage bond his name is written Vanhice,
but he signs as Vannuis. Give the family
migration patterns, he may be the son of Cornelius Van Nuys and Mary Van Nuys. Again, just speculation, but he may be the Isaac
Vanhice listed in the 1840 census of Clinton, IN.
GEORGE VAN HISE, b. 19 Oct 1807, NJ; d. 23
Dec 1868, East Amwell, Hunterdon, NJ; m. MARY HAGAMAN BELLIS; b. 06 Apr 1806; d.
18 Aug 1875, East Amwell, Hunterdon, NJ.
They are listed in the 1850 census East Amwell, Hunterdon, NJ, but with no
children living with them, except James Smith.
They are listed in the 1860 census East Amwell, Hunterdon, NJ, but with no
children living with them, except William Hagaman.
JOSEPH VAN HISE was involved in a Supreme Court
case in 1771, so born before the mid-1750s:
43795; VanHise, Joseph (Plaintiff); Joseph VanHise v. Benjamin Ward; Trespass (for breaking into and damage of
a blacksmith shop in Windsor); Middlesex; 1771 – 1772. He may be the same Joseph in the 1789 tax list
of South Brunswick. He may be the same Joseph
Van Hise who owned land bordering what Okey Van Hise purchased in 1796 in South
Brunswick.[23]
OKEY VAN HISE, the estate of, was involved in a Supreme Court case, State of New
Jersey v Thomas Jackson, of an appeal on Insolvency prosecuted in the Court of Common Pleas in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co.
in 1815.[24] The inventory of Mr. Jackson's estate includes a note of Okey Van Hise of $36, and a debt to the administrators of the estate of Okey Van Hise, dec'd of $5. This estate is too early to be any of the other Okey
Van Hises discussed here, except the husband of Aeltje Amerman, but this is too late for him. Was he the Unknown Van Hise of Middlesex below?
WILLIAM VAN HISE m RACHEL SUTTON, 05 Feb 1804,

further is known of this couple, though there is another couple, William Van Hise
and Rachel Hegeman, whose records may in fact belong to this couple, see below.
WILLIAM VAN HISE, b. bef. 1765, is listed
in the 1810 census of Shenandoah, VA with 3 males under 10, 2 males 16-26, and no
females.
THOMAS VAN HISE, b. before 1790, NJ; m. ABIGAIL
ALVERT, 30 Apr 1808, Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ, no further trace.
PETER VAN HISE, b. 1789, NJ; d. 09 Jun 1865,
South Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ.[25] He was a farmer. I have not found him in any census records of
Middlesex, NJ, nor any Peter Van Nuys.
JAMES VAN HISE, b circa 1770, m. ELIZA UNKNOWN.
He is probably the James Van Huyse, age 23, listed in the 1793 Military Census
of North Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ.[26] On 18 Feb 1829 James and Eliza Van Hise of North
Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ sold land in North Brunswick to William Dehart. He is named Van Hise throughout the deed, except
in the signature as Van Nuis.[27] He is probably the James Vanuise listed in the
1840 census of North Brunswick, aged 60-70, with 1 son, 3 daughters and his wife. A Jas Van Hise, Jr., probably his son, aged 20-30,
is listed in the 1840 census of North Brunswick, NJ, with a son, under 5, probably
wife aged 15-20 and an older woman.
AELTJE VAN HISE, b. circa 1763, NJ; m. JACOB
VANDEVENTER, 12 Apr 1783, Middlesex, NJ;[28]
b. circa 1760. Given her name, she was likely
a granddaughter of Auke.
GEERTJE VAN HISE, b. circa 1773, NJ; m. HENRY
SILLCOCKS, circa 1793, Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ.

UNKNOWN VAN HISE of South Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ
UNKNOWN VAN HISE was born circa
1745, and died bef. 1816 in Middlesex, NJ.
He married SARAH UNKNOWN. He may be
the Oakey Van Hise whose estate was involved in a Supreme Court case in 1815, see
above.
This family has been pieced together from the following deed (in poor condition,
the liber copy being a typewritten transcript), words in [] were added based on other
information within the deed:[29]
On 31 [Jul] 1815, Sarah Van Hise, John Van Hise & wife [Mary], Okey Van Hise
& Ann his wife, [John] Roe [and] Elizabeth his wife, William Fra[] Ja[] his
wife, Nathaniel Roe and Mary [his] wife, [a]ll of the County of Middlesex and State
of New Jersey, parties of the first part, and
[Matthew]their (sic) Rue of South Brunswick, County and State [afore]said of the
second part;
a plot of land in South Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ, bordering Nicholas Jake [sic],
Nathaniel Britton and the road to Matthew Rue’s Mill, containing 12 acres and 22
perches;
Signed by (in columns downward): Sarah Vanhise [my assumption: the widow], John
Vanhise, Mary Vanhise [his wife], [O]rkey Vanhise, Ann Vanhise [his wife], John
[Roe], Elizabeth [Roe, his wife], Nathaniel [Roe], Mary Roe [his wife].
Acknowledged by the same people that signed the same day. Recorded 13 Feb 1852.
I am assuming Sarah is the widow, based on her appearing first without a husband. William Fra[] and Ja[] did not sign or acknowledge
the document. It is possible this is William
Van Hise and his wife, Rachel, who moved to Liberty, Butler, OH where he purchased
land on 15 Jul 1815,[30]
which may explain why he and his wife were not available to sign or acknowledge
the deed. Okey moved to the same township
by 1820. No record of Okey owning real estate
was found, but he did pay personal property tax there by 1826.[31] Since there is not any evidence that William Fra[]
is actually William Van[], I have assumed this couple is a daughter named Ja[ne?]
and her husband. I have listed William’s
parents as unknown and detailed his family with more information later.

(UNKNOWN1) was born bet. 1760 – 1770 in NJ. He married MARY UNKNOWN. She was born bet. 1760 – 1770. His three eldest sons are speculative. His sons, Joseph and William, are based an online
family tree[34]
which cites the 1830 and 1840 South Brunswick census records as sources, but does
not include the younger children, and lists John’s birth year incorrectly as 1778. His son, John, is placed here based on being styled
John Jr, in two mortgage records, the unusual form of his name, Van Hyse, and his
location. Others list John’s parents as John
Van Nuys and Lucretia Vanderipe.[35] That is probably correct,[36]
however, I have placed him here since I cannot find a baptismal record for him (their
other children have baptismal records), and he at least occasionally used the surname
Van Hise while John and Lucretia never did.
Adopting a new surname at this late date seems unusual.

26 Apr 1846 in Decatur, Van Buren, MI.
Richard and Jemima Addis of South Brunswick on 27 May 1796 sold land to Okey Van
Hise of South Brunswick.[37] Land in South Brunswick bordered Joseph Van Hise, possibly his father
or more likely his uncle, see Isolated Records above. Other deeds include:
Okey and Ann Van Hise of South Brunswick to Francis Timbrooke land in Middlesex
on 5 Jan 1804.[38]
Okey and Anne Vanhise of Southward, Middlesex sold land on the se side of the road
from Cranbury to Dunkans Mills to John R. Schenck of West Windsor. on 18 Mar 1805.[39]
Okey and Ann Van Hise of South Brunswick to Elias Mershon of the same Township on
8 Oct 1814.[40]
His family appears in the 1820 census of Liberty, Butler, OH. Union township was formed in 1823 from Liberty Township.[41] Okey appears in the Union Township, Butler Co.
Tax lists beginning in 1826. Daughters Nancy
& Sarah are based on the 1820 census and marriages in Butler, OH.

b about 1788 in NJ. As noted earlier, the
placement of this family is speculative, alternating between the use of Van Hise/Huyse
and Van Nuys as its surname. Researchers
will want to look for the family under both names. The family is listed in the 1850 census of North
Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ. He is probably
the John Van Hise listed in the 1840 census of North Brunswick with two older sons,
assuming his and his wife’s ages are miscategorized. As John Van Nuis, Jr. (Vanhise in the acknowledgement),
he and his wife, Christina, mortgaged land in the city of New Brunswick on 5 May
1813.[43]

THOMAS VAN HISE was thought to have
been born about 1730, based on the fact he bought about 200 acres of land in 1751 in what
would become Ocean County, based on the sources below:

"Thomas Van Hise bought 200 acres of land in 1751. His son Isaac manufactured
spinning wheels and chairs. (One of those chairs is in the museum.) His son George
and grandson Antoine built the first cranberry crates.
"Biographical Cyclopedia of Ocean County, New Jersey (1899): "The paternal
grandfather of the subject was Isaac Van Hise, a manufacturer of chairs and spinning
wheels. His father, Thomas Van Hise, located
on a tract of 200 acres of land in Cassville, Ocean County, about 150 years ago
[i.e. ~1749], and so far as is known was the first of the name to settle in New
Jersey, ... it is believed that all of the Van Hises in the country descended from
him. He was the father of the following children: Oakey, Abraham, Thomas and William;
all of whom were farmers and highly respected citizens in their day."
However, though Thomas Van Hise is said to have purchased the 200 acres in 1751,
he does not appear in the
1755 Freeholders list,[43a] nor in the 1758 Tax Rateables list.[44] He
is also not listed in the 1778 or 1780 Tax Rateables list of Upper Freehold (which included what is now Jackson Twp., Ocean Co., NJ),[45] thus I have not been able to confirm Thomas as the father of these children. As noted below, his sons appear to have been born after 1770, seeming late to start a family if he was born about 1730. Tentatively, I believe he was born closer to 1750.

"Vanhise ... The present family of the name in Brick and elsewhere in Ocean,

Isaac was of "the same County and State", presumably Monmouth, when he
purchased land in the South Ward of New Brunswick, Middlesex from Cornelius Hance,
Rebecca Hance, wife of Thomas Van Hise. both of Monmouth and John Hance of Philadelphia
on 17 Apr 1728.

It seems likely Cornelius, Rebecca, John and Abigail were siblings. They were likely children of Thomas Hance and
Phebe Arvin of North Brunswick. He died by
1795 when Phebe appears in the tax list.

born 29 Sep 1780 in NJ, and died 19 Jul 1850 in Butler, OH.[51] He married RACHEL HEGEMAN. She was born 04 Mar 1779 in NJ, and died 11 Apr
1850 in Butler, OH.[52] It is possible that Rachel Hegeman and Rachel
Sutton, who married a William Van Hise in 1804 are the same person.
As noted earlier, William Van Hise may be the brother of Okey Van Hise, who
moved to the same township by 1820.
He may be the William Van Hise who witnessed a deed of Okey and Ann Van Hise of South Brunswick, NJ on 5 Jan 1804. He
was of South Brunswick, NJ on 2 Mar 1808, when he purchased the land in West
Windsor which he later was the mortgagor to Matthew Rue on 11 Dec 1811 for a lot of land in West
Windsor, NJ, bordering land of Benjamin Atchley.[53] On 26 Dec 1811, he and Rachel, of West Windsor,
sold in West Windsor to Jediah Applegate.[54] He was the mortgagor for 5 lots (one bordering
land of Benjamin Atchley) on 18 May 1814,[55]
where it notes he sold land to Nathaniel Roe (possibly his brother-in-law) on 28 May 1813. In early 1815 (day & month not given) William and
Rachel Van Hise of Middlesex sold three lots of land to Abraham Van Hise of the
same county, acknowledged 28 Mar 1815[56] One of the lots bordered Nathaniel Roe.
The above records could apply to William Van Hise and Rachel Sutton, who married
at Cranbury in 1804, see above, as there are no indications in the deeds as to which
couple they belong. However, since there
is lots of activity before mid-1815, but none after a purchase by William Van Hise
and Rachel Hegeman in OH in mid-1815 (see below), I believe these records belong
to them. Given Rachel Hegeman’s age at the
birth of her first child at 25, It is possible she was previously married to a man
named Sutton, and Rachel Hegeman and Rachel Sutton are the same person.
On 7 Jul 1815 he purchased land from Benjamin Larew of Butler Co., OH[57]. It does not say where William was residing at
the time. He is listed in the 1820 census
of Liberty (later Union) Twp., Bulter, OH. On 12 Aug 1825 he was of Butler Co., OH when he purchased land in Switzerland Co., IN.

20 South Amboy was formally incorporated
as a township by the Township Act of 1798 on February 21, 1798. Over the next 90
years, portions split off to form Monroe Township (April 9, 1838), Madison Township
(March 2, 1869; later renamed Old Bridge Township) and Sayreville Township (April
6, 1876; later Borough of Sayreville).
