Notes on the Gulick Family

Notes on the Gulick Family

This post is based on the excellent genealogy, Gulicks of the USA[1]  A few clarifications and additions are given below.

The Family of Joakim5 Gulick (Jacob4, Jochem3, Jochem2, Hendrick1)[2] and Lena Johnson

The children listed: Jochem, Cornelius, and Abraham (called Brom), are actually duplicates of their father, Capt. Jochem,[3] and their uncles, Cornelius[4]  and Abraham J,[5] brothers of Joakim[6].  Abraham J., son of Joakim, was also called Brom.[7]

Jockum was named as the executor of the will of his father-in-law, William Johnson of South Brunswick, dated 20 Dec 1768.[8]  He was probably one of the fellow bondsmen of the estate of Matthias (sic) Johnson (his presumed brother-in-law, Martin Johnson) on 15 Nov 1783.[9]  At the death of Samuel Groves, the estate papers of Mort (sic) Johnson were given to him as "the surviving" administrator.

Joakim had no known children.  It is not known when Lena Johnson was born, but since her mother, Jannetje Wyckoff, was born about 1693, Lena was probably born no later than, 1738, so was at least six years older than her husband.  Administration of his estate in 1814, since he was intestate, would usually have been given to his widow and eldest son, if alive and of age.  Though he may not have been remarried or had children, Ann was likely his widow, and Aaron his son.  I have not consulted the brief biography of Jochem at the South Brunswick Library.[10]

The Family of Joakim Gulick and Nela Lake

This family is not discussed in "Gulicks of the U.S.A."  Jochum Gulick and Eleana, his wife, of New Windsor, Middlesex, NJ sold 235 acres of land there on 9 Dec 1747 to Coert Voorhees (Eleana signed as Eleanor).[11]  He and his wife, Eleanor, acknowledged the sale in 1772.  He purchased 500 acres of land there in 1741.  He sold the other 265 acres by 1751 to Hendrick Gulick (presumably his father), who sold it to James Perrine, who sold it to William Updike.[12]  He owned other land there in 1748,[13] and still in 1768.[14]  He probably moved to South Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ and died shortly after the acknowledgement of the sale as Eleanor Gulick is listed in the Tax Ratables there in 1772, 1778 and 1780.  By a process of elimination, he was probably the freeholder in New Brunswick (which included North and South Brunswick at the time) in 1753.[15]

Nela’s name is given in a Bible record[16] of her daughter, Alcha, born 5 Oct 1747 and married Samuel Grove on 25 Sep 1770.  She is stated there to be the fifth and last child of Joacam Hulick and Nela Lake.  Nela is probably Naile (Neeltje/Eleanor), daughter of John Lake, named in her father’s will on 20 Feb 1752, written at New Brunswick (which included North and South Brunswick).[17]

Samuel Grove, husband of Alcha Hulick, was born 10 Nov 1745 in NJ,[18] and died bef. 25 Sep 1806 in South Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ.[19]  He married Alcha/Aeltje Hulick 25 Sep 1770 in NJ, daughter of Jochem Gulick and Neeltje Lake.  She was born 05 Oct 1747, and died 14 Nov 1841 in Middlesex, NJ.

They were married by Rev. John Light/Leydt, a minister at Six Mile Run where several of their children were baptized.  Samuel’s will was dated 30 May 1799 at South Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ.  It mentions wife, his Aulty, that his youngest child was not of age yet, and his estate was to be divided equally between his wife and seven children, His will was proved 25 Sep 1806.

Children of SAMUEL GROVE and ALCHA HULICK are:[20]

  i.      CATHERINE2 GROVE, b. 27 Jul 1771, NJ, named after her probable maternal aunt (see below), m. PETER MONFOORT; b. circa 1770; d. 28 Sep 1828, Kingston, NJ.
  ii.     SAMUEL GROVE, b. 11 May 1773, NJ, named after his paternal grandfather.
  iii.    HANNAH GROVE, b. 07 Nov 1775, NJ; d. 28 Apr 1815; named after her possible maternal aunt (see below), m. WILLIAM SERVICE.
  iv.    JOACHEM GROVE, b. 09 Jul 1777, NJ; d. 25 Jul 1777, named after his maternal grandfather.
  v.     ELIZABETH GROVE, b. 08 Mar 1779, near Six Mile Run, NJ; d. 13 Jun 1870.
  vi.    HENRY IRVIN GROVE, b. 22 May 1780, near Six Mile Run, NJ; d. 31 Aug 1858, named after his probable maternal uncle (see below).
  vii.   JOHN GROVE, b. 9 Mar 1783, near Six Mile Run, NJ; d. bef. 1878, Burlington, Victoria, Australia, named after his paternal uncle.
  viii.  WILLIAM GROVE, b. 22 Mar 1786, NJ; d. 05 Oct 1875.
  ix.    DAVID GROVE, b. 18 Feb 1788, near Six Mile Run, NJ; d. bef. 1878.

Given that he was probably born before 1717 (buying the land above when he was 21 or older and having his fifth child by 1747), Jochum’s probable parents were Hendrick3 Gulick (Jochem2, Hendrick1) and Catherine Amerman.  Alcha would have been named after her paternal aunt, Aeltje.

Their children did not include Joakim, baptized on 19 Aug 1750,[21] because he was baptized after 1747, the mother’s name is listed as Mary and the location was at Harlingen in Somerset Co., NJ.  That Joakim was more likely the son of Jochem4 Gulick (Jochem3, Jochem2, Hendrick1) by an unknown first wife named Mary.[21a]  Nothing more is known of the child, so it is likely he died young.  Jochem married Cornelia Vandenberg after 1758 when her first husband, William Cock, died.[22]

Jochem Gulick and Neeltje Lake had four children before the daughter Alcha/Aeltje.  I have not found direct evidence of who they are.  However, there are three likely possibilities who will be discussed:
     1) Hendrick Hulick, husband of Hannah Higgins,
     2) Catherine, wife of Thomas Fourt, and
     3) possibly Ann, wife of John Spencer.

Family of Thomas Fourt and Catherine, probably Hulick

No record of Catherine’s maiden name has been found.  However, Joakim and Jacomyntje are Dutch names and as detailed below their children’s names all appear to be after immediate family members of the parents, presuming she is a daughter of Jochem and Neeltje.  She herself would have been named after her paternal grandmother, Catherine Amerman.

Thomas2 Fourt (François1 Defoert) died 11 Jun 1802 in Franklin, Somerset, NJ.[23]  He married Catherine, presumably Hulick.  She was born circa 1733, and died 07 Feb 1815 in Franklin, Somerset, NJ.[24]

His will dated 10 Jun 1802, Franklin, Somerset, NJ, mentions wife, Catherine, sons Henry, Francis, and Joakim, daughters Sarah, Hannah and Mary, proved 8/22/1802.[25]

Children of THOMAS FOURT and CATHERINE (presumably) HULICK are:[26]

      i.    SARAH3 FOURT, bap. 14 Apr 1754, at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after her paternal aunt.
     ii.    H
ENRY FOURT, bap. 02 Nov 1755, at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. 20 Feb 1841, Franklin, Somerset, NJ, named after his maternal uncle.
      iii.  T
HOMAS FOURT, bap. 04 Sep 1757, at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. bef. 1803, named after his father.
       iv.  H
ANNAH FOURT, bap. 27 Apr 1760, at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. 14 Jan 1816, named after her possible maternal aunt.
        v.   F
RANCIS FOURT, b. 06 Jun 1762, bap. at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. 15 Apr 1803, named after his paternal grandfather.
       vi.  N
EELTJE FOURT, bap. 05 May 1764, at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. bef. 1803, named after her maternal grandmother.
     vii.   M
ARY FOURT, bap. 09 Mar 1766, at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after her paternal grandmother.
     viii.  J
OAKIM FOURT, bap. 21 Feb 1768, at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after his maternal grandfather.
        ix.  M
ARGARET FOURT, bap. 14 Oct 1770, at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. bef. 1803, named after her paternal aunt.
        x.   J
ACOMYNTJE FOURT, bap. 11 Oct 1772, at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. bef. 1803, named after her maternal great aunt.
        xi.  C
ATHERINE FOURT, bap. 16 Jul 1775, at Six Mile Run, NJ; d. bef. 1803, named after her mother.

Family of Hendrick Hulick and Hannah Higgins

A family tree online includes the family of Hendrick Gulick and Hannah Higgins,[27] with their children Jediah (b. 1752) and Joshua (b. 1754).  She was the daughter of Jediah Higgins and Hannah Stout, who wrote his will on 22 Apr 1765 at Kingstown, Middlesex, NJ naming his daughter as Hannah Hulock (sic).[28]  I cannot find any source for when Hannah was born, but she was probably Jediah’s youngest daughter, born no later than 1740.  The birth dates for Jediah and Joshua also appear to be estimates, so they could have been born later.  In either case, Joshua does not appear in the 1793 military census, so he appears to have died young.  If Hendrick Gulick and Hannah Higgins are the parents of this family, then Jediah and Hannah were named after their maternal grandparents, Joshua and Joseph after their maternal uncles.  Jochem Gulick and Nela Lake are possible parents of Hendrick, being named after his paternal grandfather.

More is known of this family, including two other children, from a sale of land on 29 Mar 1814,[29] presumably after Hendrick and Hannah died.  John Van Arsdalen & Hannah Gulick, his wife of the City of Philadelphia, Jediah Gulick & Elizabeth his wife, and Joseph Gulick sold land in Middlesex, N.J. to Matthew Van Dyke and Ralph Sansbury and John L. Nevius.  It is not known how the purchasers may be related, if at all.  Ralph Sansbury was the husband of Eleanor Van Pelt.[30]  Matthew Van Dyke was the husband of Lydia Longstreet.

Joseph was born about 1769 as stated in the military census of South Brunswick in 1793.[31]  He entered military service on 23 Apr 1791 as a corporal,[32] no further trace.

Jediah was born about 1772 as stated in the military census of South Brunswick in 1793.[33]  Jediah was a witness to the will of Jochem4 Gulick (Johannes3, Jochem2, Hendrick1) of South Brunswick, NJ in 1803.[34]  Jediah and Elizabeth were the mortgagors (Catherine Kempton, mortgagee) of land in South Brunswick on 14 Feb 1814.[35]  The family moved to Jacksonburg, Wayne Township, Butler Co., OH where he is listed in the 1830 census[36] with a wife, but no children.  He is listed in the 1834, [37]and 1837[38] tax lists of Wayne township.  They had a daughter named Johanna who married John Prince on 15 Aug 1821 in Warren Co., OH.[39]  A John Printz is listed in the 1830 census of Wayne, Butler Co., OH with a wife and four children.  She is probably the Hannah Printz, 45, born NJ, with 3 children: Henry W, Iranty (Dinatha, later married Savory Adams on 14 Dec 1850), and Edward, in the 1850 census of Waynesville, Warren, OH,[40] Edwin being the fourth child.[41]  Jediah may have had a son, Henry, who married Sarah Wells on 28 Sep 1825 in Butler, OH.[42]

Hannah was born on 8 Nov 1765,[43]  married John Van Arsdalen in Sep 1785 at Cranbury, NJ, and died in Philadelphia on 27 Jul 1848.  John was born on 17 Feb 1763 in New Jersey and died in Philadelphia on 5 Feb 1835.  Though his birthdate is off by one year, I believe he is probably the son of Aris and Elizabeth Van Arsdalen baptized on 21 Mar 1762.[44]  Their children were:
     1) Henry, born 25 Aug 1786, married Gerusha, died before 06 Aug 1838, named after his maternal grandfather (see below).
     2) Aaron, born 22 Dec 1788, named after his paternal grandfather,
     3) Hannah, born 22 Feb 1791, named after her maternal grandmother, m. Josiah W. Gibbs, and
     4) Elizabeth, born, 29 Jan 1795, named after her paternal grandmother, died before 1849.

The Family of John Spencer and Annetje, possibly Hulick

Little is known of this family and their connection to the Hulick family is speculative.  He is probably the John Spencer listed in the Tax Ratables of South Brunswick, Middlesex County in 1772, 1778 and 1780.[45]  He may be the John Spencer listed in the list of Freeholders of Woodbridge Township, Middlesex Co., NJ in 1752.[46]  A move from Woodbridge to South Brunswick could help explain why the baptismal record for only one child has been found.  Their one known child is:

                   i.    Joachim Spencer, bap. 30 Aug 1778, at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after his presumed grandfather.  The father is stated to be unbaptized, also possibly explaining why no other baptismal records have been found.

Of the 16 children named Joachim/Jochem in the records of Six Mile Run, only this one does not have a clear connection to the Gulick family.

Other possible grandchildren of Jochem Gulick and Neeltje Lane

A number of Gulicks are listed as of Windsor Township in 1793[47]: John, b. 1754, Jacob (no age), Henry (no age) Abraham, b. 1771, William (no age), John, b. 1773, and Nicholas Hulick, b 1775.  They are not included in “Gulicks of the U.S.A.” and no further information has been found.

The Children of Antje4 Gulick (Hendrick3, Jochem2, Hendrick1) and Simon Van Dyke[48]

Simon was the son of Jan Van Dyck and Annetje Ver Kerk.  His will,[49] inventoried on 3 Nov 1786 in New Brunswick, mentions his wife, Anne, his children: John, Henry, and Catherine, and his son-in-law, Harmen Cortelyou.  Not mentioned was his daughter, Annetje, baptized 29 May 1748 at the Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ.[50]  Three of their children were named after their grandparents, so it is likely Catherine was named after her maternal grandmother.  Annetje was probably born no later than 1721 (her mother then being 45).

The Children of Peter4 Gulick (Hendrick3, Jochem2, Hendrick1)

Peter4 was probably born earlier than previously thought as well,[51] probably no later than 1719.  The children assigned to him[52] were: Jochem, bap. in 1776 and Johannes, bap. in 1778.  However, given that he would have been at least 57 at the birth of his first child, the naming of his eldest child as Jochem, and the location at Six Mile Run (verses the Western Precinct where most of the rest of his family lived), it is likely that this Peter is actually Peter5 Gulick (Jochem4, Peter3, Jochem2, Hendrick1), whose siblings were all baptized at Six Mile Run.

The Family of Hendrick4 Gulick (Hendrick3, Jochem2, Hendrick1)

Though his son, Daniel is mentioned elsewhere,[53] he is not listed with the family record.[54]  Though he died young, his presence is helpful in establishing the parentage of his father since he had a later brother named after him.  His mother, Sarah, is probably the wife of Hendrick Gulick who was buried at the Reformed Dutch Church, NYC, of 24 Oct 1752,[55] about a year after the baptism of the first Daniel.

The Family of James5 Gulick (Jacobus4, Jochem3, Jochem2, Hendrick1)[56]

A Jacobus Gulick, and his wife, Margaret, had a daughter, Geertje, baptized on 25 Aug 1776 at the Reformed Church at Neshanic.[57]  Because Jacobus/James was not a common early Gulick name and he did not marry Elizabeth Snedeker until 1785 when he was 32, Geertje is likely from an unknown first marriage of James.  She is not mentioned in James’ will and nothing further is known of her.

The Family of Hendrick Gulick and Catherine Hagewout of North Brunswick

This family is not discussed in "Gulicks of the U.S.A."  A Hendrick Gulick and Catherine Hagewout had four children baptized at the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick:[58]
     1) Isaac, bap. 28 Nov 1773;
     2) Hendrick, bap. 15 Nov 1778;
     3) Unnamed child, bap. 17 Jun 1781; and
     4) Daniel, bap. 05 Jun 1785.

His parents are unknown, but he was born about 1750.  Her parents were probably Isaac and Catalyntje Hagewout.  They had a son, Petrus, baptized on 18 Nov 1750.[59].  He is probably the Peter Hagewout (husband of Elizabeth Stynmets) who had two children also baptized at the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick, including his eldest son, Isaac.[60]  Peter Hagewout is listed in the tax list of the North Brunswick in 1779.[61]

Hendrick may be the Hendrick Hewlit (a possible corruption of Hulick) listed in the 1779 tax list of North Brunswick as there are no Hewlits listed in the military census there of 1793,[62] but Hendrick and Catherine’s son, Isaac, is listed.  Isaac may be the Isaac Hulick who married Nancy Service on 5 Mar 1801 and were members for the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick on 20 Oct 1804.

The family has not been traced further.  However, he may be the Hendrick Gulick who married the widow Stolts at the Presbyterian Church of New Brunswick in 1792.[63]

The Family of Abraham5 Gulick (Ferdinand4, Peter3, Jochem2, Hendrick1) and Mary Drake[64]
The Family of Abraham5 Gulick (Jochem4, Peter3, Jochem2, Hendrick1) and his four wives[65]

There is considerable overlap between these two families, as well as ambiguity about some of the facts of their lives, that has made it difficult to distinguish them clearly.

Below is a table of their children of the two families showing the duplicates:

* Jacques is an unusual form (French) of the name Jacob.  Its occurrence in both families is very unusual.

** The mother in Mary’s baptismal record is Sarah, not Mary. She was actually the daughter of Abraham Gulick, son of Samuel Gulick and Mary Quick, and Sarah Voorhees,[66] baptized that same day.[67]

***The baptismal dates are wrong as no such records have been found.  They appear to be transcription errors, being one year off from the alternate record or being a duplicate of another record.  Also, in each of those records the baptismal record is a year or more from the birth record, which was unusual for the Dutch at that time.

There is information that confirms the presence of Abraham,[68] son of Jochem, and his children: Abraham,[69] Sarah, Peter, Jacob, John, Andrew[70] and Elizabeth,[71] in Montgomery Co., NY by about 1800.[72]  Abraham’s third wife was supposedly Jannetje Vanderbeek, but she is not mentioned in the baptismal records of any of Abraham’s children, nor have I been able to place her in the Vanderbeek or Remsen families.  His fourth wife, Mary Elizabeth Ten Eyck, is said to have been the mother of Jacques (and presumably the later children).  However, given Mary was born in 1738, she would not have had a child in 1793 at age 55.  One possibility is that Abraham only had three wives, the third being Mary Vanderbeek (not Jannetje Vanderbeek), daughter of Jacques Vanderbeek and Mary Ten Eyck (who was born about 1729, not 1738).  In that case, Abraham’s son, Jacques, was named after his maternal grandfather and his son, Andrew, after his maternal uncle.  Jacques Vanderbeek wrote his will[73] in South Branch, Somerset Co., NJ in 1762, naming his daughter, Mary, but not a daughter named Jannetje.  Jacques’ son, Andrew, had almost all of his children baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Six Mile Run, so his family probably at least knew Abraham Gulick’s family whose children were baptized there as well.  The children as listed in “Gulicks of the U.S.A.” appear to be correct, except that some of the dates of their baptismal records are incorrect.

Though the cemetery records of the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury seem inaccurate at points, it appears Abraham, son of Ferdinand is buried there in the same plot as his father, Ferdinand,[74] but his wife and children were not found.  The only record of his children I can confirm is that his daughter, Helen, married Joseph Gulick on 11 Dec 1824 in Middlesex, NJ.[75]  Abraham is probably the male of 70, but less than 80, years old living with Joseph Gulick, his son-in-law, in the 1840 census of New Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ.[76]  Given the above, I believe that Abraham, son of Ferdinand, and his wife, Mary Drake, only had two children: Helen and Benjamin.

As a side note, Abraham, son of Jochem and Cornelia, was baptized on 22 Oct 1748, not 1 Oct 1743, or 22 Oct 1743 as the published records say.[77]  Jochem’s will specifies that Peter was his eldest son and he was baptized on 03 Oct 1747.[78]  A review of the published records confirms that a number of the baptisms in 1743 must be actually in 1748 when compared with Bible records and other similar records.  The next records after 1743 are in 1749, also suggesting 1743 should be 1748.  Also, Abraham’s mother’s maiden name is unknow, as appears in Gulicks of the USA, p 122.  I think her maiden name of Vanderberg on p. 123 is just a confusion with Cornelia Vanderberg who married a different Jochem Gulick, see p. 87.

The Family of John Hulick and Maria Lott[79]
The Family of John Gulick and Ann Van Arsdale[80]

In “Gulicks of the USA”, John Hulick, husband of Maria Lott, was thought not to be the son of Jacob Gulick and Maria Van Arsdalen.  However, the pension record of John Gulick of Batavia, OH[81] includes an affidavit which states that Capt. Jochem Gulick was his brother, also that he was of East Windsor, Middlesex, NJ.  A John Gulick, age 39 (born 1754) is listed in the 1793 military census of Windsor Township.[82]  John’s son, Capt. John Hulick owned land in East Windsor.  Though John’s eldest son was named after himself, of John’s next four children, Catherine and Abraham were named after their maternal grandparents, while James and Mary were their paternal grandparents.

The children listed of John Gulick and Ann Van Arsdale[83] are actually children of John Gulick (son of Peter Gulick and Eva Van Sicklen) and Lena Cornel (daughter of Cornelius Cornell and Johanna Voorhees).[84]  Their two oldest daughters and their two oldest sons were named after their grandparentsHis second wife was Ann, probably Van Arsdalen.[85]  Their children were all named in his will except two, Eva and Lena, who died young:

1.  JOHN4 GULICK (PETER3, JOCHEM2, HENDRICK1) was born 11 Nov 1736 in NJ, and died bef. 03 Aug 1797 in South Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ.  He married (1) LENA CORNELL, daughter of CORNELIUS CORNELL and JOHANNA VOORHEES.  She was born bef. 18 Jan 1740/41 in near New Brunswick, NJ, and died 1791.  He married (2) ANNE, probably VAN ARSDALE.

Children of JOHN GULICK and LENA CORNELL are:
                   i.    JOHANNA5 GULICK, bap. 29 Jan 1764, at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after her maternal grandmother.
                  ii.    EVA GULICK, bap. 01 Mar 1767, at Six Mile Run, NJ.; d. young, named after her paternal grandmother
2.              iii.    PETER GULICK, bap. 04 Jun 1769, at Six Mile Run, NJ.; d. 18 Sep 1840, NJ, named after his paternal grandfather.
                  iv.    JANNETJE GULICK, bap. 29 Sep 1771, at Six Mile Run, NJ.; m. PETER STULTS, 03 Dec 1791, named after her maternal and paternal aunts.
                   v.    CORNELIUS GULICK, bap. 04 Aug 1773, at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after his maternal grandfather.

                 vii.    MARY GULICK, bap. 14 Sep 1777, at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after her paternal aunt.
Child of JOHN GULICK and ANNE UNKNOWN is:

                viii.    LENA5 GULICK, b. 13 Jul 1793, at Cranbury, NJ;[86] d. young, named after his first wife.

Generation No. 2

2.  PETER5 GULICK (JOHN4, PETER3, JOCHEM2, HENDRICK1) was bap. 04 Jun 1769 at Six Mile Run, NJ., and died 18 Sep 1840 in NJ.  He married ANN DYE 19 Dec 1793.  This Peter was not the son of Fernandus, not mentioned in the will of his father, nor in the sale of his estate.  That Peter died in York, PA in 1790.

Children of PETER GULICK and ANN DYE are:
                   i.    PETER DEY6 GULICK, b. 1794, NJ.
                  ii.    LENA GULICK, b. 1796, NJ.
                 iii.    MARGARET GULICK, b. 1798, NJ; m. FREDERICK FARR.

The Family of Isaac5 Gulick/Hulick (Ferdinand4, Peter3, Jochem2, Hendrick1)[87]

In the sale of part of his father’s estate, Isaac is said to be of Adams Co., PA, but nothing else is mentioned regarding him.  He was born about 1767, married twice, had eight children and lived all of his adult life in Adams Co., PA.

Isaac married Maria Monfoort on 9 Nov 1790 at Conewago, PA.[88]  Assuming he was in his early twenties when he married, he would have been born about 1767.  His sister, Ann, was thought to have been born on Sept. 16, 1776 or 10/24/1767, but according to her tombstone,[89] the date in 1776 is probably correct, leaving open the possibility for Isaac to be born about 1767.  Also, census records in 1830 and 1840 of Mount Joy, Adams, PA, show that Isaac was born before 1770.  Isaac’s eldest son, Peter, was baptized in January 1792 at Conewago.[90]  Isaac married second Sarah Commonger on 21 Jan 1806 at Mount Pleasant Township, Adams Co., PA.[91]  They joined the Presbyterian Church at Gettysburg, PA on 12 Apr 1816.[92]

He wrote is will at Mount Joy, Adams Co., PA on 26 Dec 1840 and was proved 21 Oct 1843.[93]  In it no wife was mentioned, so Sarah predeceased him.  He mentions his son Peter, daughter, Lena, wife of Cornelius Lott, his three sons and three daughters by the last wife, namely:  Henry, David, Jacob, Maria, wife of Peter Conover, Elizabeth, and Ann Catherine, wife of Jacob Miller.  From this it can be seen who the mother of each of his children was.

Peter6 Hulick was baptized in January 1792 and probably died on 15 Apr 1852.[94]  He married Mary Cassatt[95] (Cossart?).  Their children included:
     1) Isaac7, born 17 Apr 1820, died 27 Mar 1821;[96]
     2) David, born 9 Oct 1816, died 7 Mar 1888,[97] probably never married;
     3) Margaret, born about 1826, died 3 Oct 1872,[98] probably never married.

Lena6 Hulick was born about 1795 and married Cornelius Lott, son of Cornelius Lott and Magdalena Brokaw.  Cornelius died on 10 Aug 1845 at Seneca, OH.  Their children included:[99]
     1) Maria7, b, abt. 1814;
     2) George, b. abt. 1816, died young;
     3) Cornelius, b. abt. 1818;
     4) Isaac, b. abt. 1820;
     5) George, b. abt. 1824;
     6) Peter Hulick, b. abt. 1827; and
     7) Ann Margaret, b. abt. 1837.

Henry6 Hulick married an unknown woman about 1840.[100]  He married second Sophia W. Decker on 23 Nov 1848 at Henry Co., IN.[101]  He died before 1870, probably in Tipton Co., IN.  His children included:[102]
     1) Isaac A7., b. 18 Dec 1841, died 06 Jan 1906, Tipton, IN, m. Nancy Ellen Ferguson 26 Dec 1871;
     2) Daniel S., b. abt. 1843; and
     3) Angeline,[103] b. Aug 1851, died 7 Jul 1926,[104] m. Samuel Elliot.

Jacob6 Hulick was born on 25 Jan 1809, died on 29 March 1882 at Gettysburg, PA, and married Sarah Monfoort on 13 Dec 1837.[105]  Their children included:
     1) Isaac N 7, b. 7 Jan 1840, d. 4 Nov 1899, m. Elizabeth Ann Haverstock;
     2) George W., b. Oct 1844, d. 28 Dec 1908, m. Elizabeth Wolf.

Mary6 Hulick was born about 1812, died 2 June 1850, and married Peter Bercaw Conover on 2 Mar 1836.[106]  Their children included:[107]
     1) Sarah Ann7, b, abt. 1836;
     2) Margaret, b. abt. 1839;
     3) Caresse, b. abt. 1840;

     7) Sophia Matilda, b. abt. 1847.

David6 Hulick was born on 21 Mar 1814, died on 8 May 1868 at Muncie, Vermillion, IL, married Lydia Reinecker on 02 Aug 1837 at Gettysburg, PA.[108]  Their children included:[109]
     1) Isaac7, b, abt. 1838, d. 2 Jun 1866, m. Jane Metzger 4 Sep 1860;
     2) George, b. 10 July 1840, d. 2 Feb 1877, m Sarah Catherine Potts;

Anna Catherine6 Hulick was born about 1821, died 17 Apr 1901 in Adams Co., PA,[110] and married Jacob Miller.  Their children included:[111]
     1) Elizabeth7, b, abt. 1842;
     2) Rebecca J, b. abt. 1843;
     3) John W, b. abt. 1845;

The Family of Anna Gulick and Angelburt Hartough

Anna5 Gulick (Joachim4, Peter3, Joachim2, Hendrick1) married Engelbert /Angelburt Hartough with license dated 6 Mar 1779 in Somerset, NJ.  Her brother, John, was the fellowbondsman for her marriage license.  She did not marry first Elbert Hoogland (see Gulicks in America, p. 123) as she is listed as Anna Gulick at her marriage and was at most 17 at her marriage.  Ann Hulick, wife of Angelburt Hartough, was admitted as a member to the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick on 29 Oct 1819.

The Family John3 Gulick (Jochem2, Hendrick1)

John Gulick was thought to have married and had a son named Jochem[112].  However, neither John nor his heirs were not named in his father’s will.[113]  There is little information given for John’s descendants in “the tree”, but those listed, with one exception, can be reasonably placed in three families that have already been identified.  Those families are:
     1) Jochem, listed in the tree as 4-D-11, is the same as 4-D-2;
     2) Peter listed in the tree as 5-E-15, is the same as 4-D-26; and
     3) Samuel, listed in the tree as 7-G-10, is the same as 4-D-17 and John, listed in the tree as 10-D-179 is the same as 4-D-18, both sons of Jochem 3-C-8.

Jochem4 Gulick (Peter3, Jochem2, Hendrick1), husband of Cornelia,[114] had the same sons named Peter, Abraham, William, Johannes, and Jochem.  He did not have a son named Jacobus, which is the one exception I have noted in this analysis.  The three daughters listed: Ann; Mary; and Catherine, were actually daughters of Johannes4 Gulick (Jochem3 Jochem2, Hendrick1) and Lammetje,[115] see below.  None of the descendants of this Jochem appear in the rest of the tree.

Peter4 Gulick (Peter3, Jochem2, Hendrick1), husband of Willemptje,[116] also had sons named Nicholas, Peter and John, though he had sons named Barent and Cornelius who are not listed.  Peter’s son, John, married Lydia Combs,[117] had 7 sons and 1 daughter and lived near Manalpan, NJ, attending the Old Tennent Church there, as described in the tree.  John’s son, Peter, as given in the tree was actually his uncle, Peter5 Gulick (Peter4, Peter3, Jochem2, Hendrick1), husband of Lydia Bodine.[118]  They had 4 sons and 4 daughters as described in the tree.  The tree says Peter died at Franklin Park.  His daughter, Mary Emily, wife of Peter Johnson, was living Franklin Park when husband died in 1831.  Presumably Peter Gulick moved to live with her after the death of her husband.

Samuel was actually the son of Jochem3 Gulick (Jochem2, Hendrick1).[119] His wife was Mary Quick.[120] Samuel had sons named Jochem, Isaac, and John, Teunis (possibly listed as Hiram, confused with his nephew), and Jacob, not listed.  Samuel’s son, Jochem, husband of Catherine Van Cleef[121], had the children listed, including his son, Isaac, who married Mary Allen.  However, the children of Isaac Gulick and Mary Allen are listed incorrectly here.  They are now listed correctly in “The Gulick Book”,[122] as: Ellen; Jochem; Nathan; Cornelius; Jeane; Samuel; and Isaac.  Isaac’s son, Abraham, and daughter who married John De Hart, were actually children of Jochem’s brother, Isaac, husband of Helena Hoagland,[123] not his son, Isaac.

John was actually the son of Jochem3 Gulick (Jochem2, Hendrick1), husband of Lametje,[124]  Samuel’s brother.  His three daughters are the same as those listed under Jochem as mentioned earlier.  His son, Samuel, his son, Cornelius, and Cornelius’ daughters are all the same as those listed.  John had two sons named Jochem who died young and so are not included in the tree.

[85] Her maiden name appears to have been based on the membership records of First Reformed Church of New Brunswick, see Historical Discourse Delivered at the Celebration of the One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the First Reformed Dutch Church of New Brunswick, NJ, by Richard Steele, pg 212.  However, the published record says she was the widow of Hendrick Hulick (who is otherwise unknown), not John Gulick.  The original record should be consulted.

[94] The transcription of his tombstone at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/64109318/peter-hulick, stated he died in 1862, aged 70, but from a review of the photo there it appears the year in 1852 and he was aged 60 years.  Also, the 1860 census of Straban, Adams, PA, shows Mary Hulick and her daughter, Margaret living together, but Peter was not found.
