The Early Vandewaters of Hempstead, NY
Peter Vandewater
The earliest known record for Vandewaters in Hempstead,
Queens, New York is the marriage of Peter Vandewater and Mary Valentine, both
of Hempstead, on 12 Dec 1736 at St. George Church, Hempstead, NY.[1] Peter Vandewater was on the proprietors of
that part of the great plain included within the patten and purchase of Robert
Williams which borders upon the town of Hempstead, and was appointed to a
committee to negotiate the boundary between the towns of Hempstead and
Oysterbay on 1/31/1746.[2] He was witness to the will of David Seaman of
Oyster Bay, NY, on 3/23/1759.[3] He registered his earmark in 1765.[4] He was of Westbury, Hempstead on 5/12/1781
when he wrote his will mentioning his wife, Mary, his son, John, his daughter,
Mary, his grandson, Benjamin Balding, his nephew Benjamin Vandewater, and his nephew
Gideon Seaman. He died shortly afterward
as his will was proved 12/8/1781[5].
Peter’s parents are not known for certain, but he was probably an undocumented
son of Cornelius4 Vandewater (Jacob3, Benjamin2,
Jacob1 Claes) and Dorothy Losee.
The Benjamin named as his nephew in his will was almost certainly Benjamin6
Vandewater (Harmen5, Benjamin4, Jacob3,
Benjamin2, Jacob1 Claes), thus he was Peter’s first
cousin, once removed. That Benjamin had
moved to Hempstead around 1780.[6] Cornelius and Dorothy did not have a known
son named Peter, but their two known children,[7]
Jacobus and Engeltje, were named after their grandparents.[8] Cornelius’ wife, Dorothy, was the daughter of
Peter Losee and Sarah Colver, not Cornelius Losee and Geertje Colfs as Ledley assumed.[9] A son named Peter after his maternal
grandfather, Peter Losee, is a likely possibility for them.
Assuming he was married about age 25, Peter was born about 1711. He is not the other known Peter born about
the same time, Peter5 Vandewater (Benjamin4, Jacob3,
Benjamin2, Jacob1 Claes).[9a]
That Peter’s will, mentioning his brother, Bernardus, was written on 25
Aug 1780 at Bedford, Kings, NY. He is
also not the Peter who wrote his will at Flushing, Queens, NY on 27 May 1777,
mentioning his sister, Wyntje Vandewater and wife, Elizabeth.[10] He was the son of Jacobus5 Vandewater
(Cornelius4, Jacob3, Benjamin2, Jacob1
Claes) and Kniertje Haff. He and his
sister, Wyntje, were baptized at the Reformed Church of Jamaica, NY.[11]
Peter’s son, John6, married Phebe Titus on 19 Oct 1772.[12]
Peter’s daughter, Mary6, married James Lewis on 09 Apr 1779[13] Their daughter, Jane, married George Baldwin,[14]
and their son, Benjamin, was the Benjamin Balding, mention in Peter’s will.

Benjamin Vandewater
My analysis of the children of Benjamin7
Vandewater (Benjamin6, Harmen5, Benjamin4,
Jacobus3, Benjamin2, Jacob1 Claes) and Maria Meyer[16]
is speculative. I believe Harmen was his
eldest son as Ledley supposed, but born later, about 1757, having his first
child when he was 25, not 31. Given
Maria’s parents, it is most likely that Adolph, baptized in 1759, was their
second son, having his first child when he had just turned 26. Their children, Harmen, Adolph and Catherine,
moved to Dutchess Co., NY, and are not mentioned in Benjamin’s will. Benjamin8 was likely their third
son as he was married, with children, and living next door to his father in the
1790 census.[17] Ledley lists John O. Smith as one of his sons,
but the abstract of his will lists him as two sons, John O. and Smith. Little is known of his younger sons: William,
Oliver, John, and Smith, however, I am assuming they are listed in order by
their age. There are more people in the
household (5 men over 16, 6 boys 16 and under, and 5 women) than can easily be
accounted for, so they may have had more children, but more likely one or more
of Benjamin’s other sons may have been married, with children, living with
their parents. Their mother, Maria Meyer, baptized in 1724,[18]would
have been almost 50 at the birth of her last child as I have outlined them. I am assuming she actually died young and had
a later sister named Maria (she was 5 years older than her husband) or she had
twins and/or closely spaced children.
The family probably moved to Hempstead by 1780 as Benjamin is named as one of
the witnesses for the will of James Ellison of Hempstead on 19 Feb 1780. Benjamin is listed frequently in the Town
Records of Hempstead as a fence viewer from 1790 on.[19]
The record of the marriage of Benjamin8 to Elizabeth
Valentine in Hempstead, NY, lists his name as Benjamin Waters, which was a
common surname in the area. From the 1790
census record it appears that Benjamin8 was married about that time,
so this is likely the correct record, just misrecorded. Benjamin8 likely returned to New
York after his marriage in 1783 to maintain the farm his father later sold in
1785. They probably moved to Dutchess
Co., NY in 1787 to be near his siblings there as a Benjamin Vandewater and his
wife (not named) from Harlem, NY, were admitted to the Reformed Dutch Church of
New Hackensack, NY.[20] He then moved by 1790 to Hempstead, Queens,
NY next to his father. He died before
1806 as his father’s will mentions his widow, but probably died before the 1800
census as he is not found there. No
records of his children supposed 4 children from the 1790 census have been
found. Benjamin7 is listed in
the 1800 census, but again the residents are unclear. There are 2 men and 2 women who are listed as
aged 16-26. These are too young to be
his children, but mostly too old to be his grandchildren.
His son, Oliver8, may be the father of his presumed grandson, Oliver9,
as Ledley suggested.[21] Oliver9 married first Elizabeth T.
Curtis on 12 Jan 1805 at St. George Episcopal Church, Hempstead, NY. He married second Freelove Ellison[22]
about 1809. A deed from his heirs lists
his children.[23]

Uriah Vandewater
The will of Thomas Seaman of Jerusalem, Hempstead, Queens Co., NY, dated 29 Mar 1762, mentions land he bought and land his son Thomas bought of Uriah Vandewater.[25] No record has been found of when Uriah sold the land or when he purchased it, but given the sale of two pieces of land he would probably have been at least 30 years old in 1762, but likely older. He may have had a wife named Jane who died on 18 Jan 1810, in the 83rd year of her age, and is buried at St. George’s Church Cemetery, Hempstead, NY.[26]
David Vandewater
David is listed in the 1790 Census of Hempstead, Queens, NY, next door to Benjamin Vandewater and his son, Bejamin. He is thought by some to be the son of Cornelius Vandewater, son of Jacobus Vandewater and Kniertje Haff, or some other Cornelius,[27] but without documentation. Given the name of his son, Lott Uriah, David may be the son of Uriah Vandewater mentioned above. Nothing is known about Uriah’s parentage, but Uriah is a variant of Jurian. If Peter is a son of Cornelius and Dorothy as suggested above, then given David’s proximity to Benjamin, he could be another nephew of Peter, if Uriah is an undocumented son of Cornelius, named after his paternal uncle Jurian. Note also that David had a son named Cornelius and a daughter named Dolly, possibly named after their paternal great grandparents.

Jacob Vandewater
In a genealogy of the Whitney family,[34] Jacob
Vandewater and Ann Smith are named as the grandparents of Mary Vandewater,
daughter of William Vandewater and Phebe Valentine, born on 10 Jul 1808 at
North Hempstead, Queens, NY. No other
records have been found to confirm this identification. William and Phebe were married on 15 Feb 1800.[35] She was the daughter of Jacob Valentine whose
will written at North Hempstead mentions, among others, his daughters Abigail
Vandewater and Phebe Vandewater.[36]
Abigail Vandewater married a John Vandewater in Nov 1788.[37] No records were found that determine who his parents were. Since Phebe and Abigail were sisters, it is likely they were brothers. Benjamin Vandewater of Hempstead had a son named John, but he was likely born too late to have been this John Vandewater (see above).

NY. He married HANNAH UNKNOWN.
She was born 1788 in NY. He was living
with James and Sarah Bell in Brooklyn, NY, in 1850, possibly living in NY Ward
2, NYC, NY in 1840, but the residents are odd.
In the 1850-51 NYC directory Valentine
is listed as having an office in NYC and home Brooklyn. His son, John L is listed as an auctioneer.[39]
Children of VALENTINE VANDEWATER and HANNAH UNKNOWN are:
5. i. SARAH MARIE4 VANDEWATER, b. 1815, NY.
6. ii. JOHN L. VANDEWATER, b. 1817, NY.

married MARGARET DEFOREEST. She was born 1820 in NY. Their son, Valentine, b 1841, d 7/18/1909
(widowed) in Brooklyn, NY, at the NY Home for Aged, lists parents as John L
Vandewater and Margaret DeForrest (both born in Ireland [1850 census shows all
born in NY]). Directories show he was living in NYC in 1850s, but have not yet
found him in the census there in 1850 or 1860.[40] His family is listed in the 1870 census where

Albertus Vandewater
An Albertus Vandewater married Patty Seaman on 04 Feb 1785 at Smithtown, Suffolk, NY, where several other Vandewaters from Queens Co. were married. He was Albertus7 Vandewater (Hendrick6, Alburtus5, Hendrick4, Jan3, Hendrick2, Abraham1) whose first wife was Elizabeth Skillman. Albertus and Elizabeth joined the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City on 20 Feb 1775 with attestation from Bushwick.[41] Elizabeth apparently died shortly after the birth of their last child, Jannetje, baptized (born?) at Jamacia on 13 Jun 1784 as she did not join in the sale of land in NYC with her husband, Albertus Vandewater, Surgeon, of Queens Co., NY, on 8 Dec 1784.[42] On 30 Jan 1780 Albertus Vandewater, Surgeon, and wife Elizabeth of Bushwick, NY, sold land in NYC to Amos Underhill.[43] It was recorded 18 Feb 1788 at the request of the purchaser, but neither seller acknowledged the deed, only witnesses. Ledley thought he died in 1787, possibly because he did not witness the deed. He died before 25 Sep 1790 when the commissioners of the Alms House begin to provide for Martha, widow of Albertus Vande Water, late of NYC, NY, physician.[44]
Other Early Hempstead Vandewaters
A Cornelius Vandewater is listed in the 1840 census of North Hempstead, Queens, NY, aged 40-50, wife, aged 40-50, but no children or other residents. He was not found in any other census. He is probably the son of Lott Uriah Vandewater and Ann Baker who was married about that time, but with ages miscategorized.
A Daniel Vandewater was named as one of the executors of the will of Mary Munsey of Hempstead, NY, dated 3 Feb 1820. One of the witnesses was Ann Vandewater.
A Mary Vandewater of North Hempstead, wrote her will on 5 Jun 1839 and was probated on 25 Feb 1840. Her heirs were nephew Valentine Willis, nieces Abigail Cornell and Mary O'Farrel, Cousin Phebe Willis. Her sister, Jane Valentine, wrote her will on 9 Aug 1838 and was proved on 13 Nov 1838. Her heirs were her sister Mary VDWater, cousin Phebe Willis, niece Abigail Cornell.
