Some Van Voorhees families of Fishkill, NY

Some Van Voorhees families of Fishkill, NY

A William H Van Voorhis of Fishkill married Ruhamy Moss/Mors,1 but his parentage was unknown.  In the process of finding his parents, it became apparent that changes to five families needed to be made:

  • Jerome6 Van Voorhis (Jerome5, Daniel4, Cornelius3, Coert2, Stephen1) and Sabra Scott2

  • John6 Van Voorhis (Jerome5, Daniel4, Cornelius3, Coert2, Stephen1) and Sarah Southard3

  • Henry6 Van Voorhis (Abraham5, Daniel4, Cornelius3, Coert2, Stephen1) and Mary Jane Baxter4

  • Hendrick6 Van Voorhis (Zachariah5, Coert4, Johannes3, Coert2, Stephen1) and Mary Hughson5

  • Cornelius6 Van Voorhis (Henry5, Coert4, Johannes3, Coert2, Stephen1) and Catherine Thorn6

This William H was born about 1810.7  The only known William whose family had not been traced was the son of Jerome Van Voorhis and Sabra Scott, who had been thought to have been born about 1805.  Using census records, it became clear that he was probably born later,8 opening the possibility that they were his parents.  A Wm H. Van Voorhis was a witness for the marriage of Cornelius Van Voorhis (one of Jerome’s known sons) and Eleanor Upton.9  DNA evidence provided by Scott (VanVoorhis) Martorano supported that placement.

However, further investigation raised suggestions that William B Van Voorhis, son of John Van Voorhis and Sarah Southard, was actually the son of Jerome Van Voorhis and Sabra Scott.  In the 1840 Census of Fishkill,10 William B Van Voorhis was living next door to Sabra Dubois, widow of Jerome Van Voorhis, and later widow of Teunis Dubois.  In 1835 William B was one of the witnesses to the sale of land by Sabra Dubois to her son Cornelius Van Voorhis.11  Also, William B had a daughter named Sabra Ann, an unusual name, suggesting Sabra was his mother (note her son, Cornelius, had a daughter named Sabra Ann, and her daughter, Eliza, had a daughter named Sabra).  William B settled near where Sabra had lived.12  He was born in 11 Jul 1811, in the same time frame as Jerome’s son.

The clearest tie for William B to Jerome’s family comes in his wife’s will.  William’s will13 left everything to his wife, Sarah, with no mention of any other relatives.  However, his wife’s will,14 written 14 Apr 1888 at Matteawan, after other bequests, left the remainder of her estate to her sister-in-law, Mary Anderson, and Ann E. Crocker.  It turns out that Ann E. Crocker was the daughter of Eliza Van Voorhis, daughter of Jerome Van Voorhis and Sabra Scott.15  Eliza and her husband, James Crocker, moved to Sullivan County shortly after they were married about 1832, so Sarah’s relationship with her was almost certainly familial as well.

William B had been thought to be the son of John Van Voorhis and Sarah Southard.  However, further inquiry showed that their son, William, was probably living with his brother, Daniel, in the 1830 census of Fishkill.16  In the 1840 census, it is apparent that William H was living four doors away from Daniel17 and he was living close by Daniel in the 1850 census18 as well, suggesting William H, husband of Ruhamy, was the son of John Van Voorhis and Sarah Southard, not William B as seen earlier.  He was born about 1810, about the same time as John’s son, who was born on 4 Jul 1810.

There are several records of a William H Van Voorhis that cannot be easily traced to the correct individual, so an effort was made to eliminate other possibilities for the parents of this new William H.  There were two other William H Van Voorhis19 men born in Fishkill from 1808-1813, but these can be clearly distinguished from the husband of Ruhamy.  However, in the process of researching them another William H was discovered, born in the same time range as the others.  He is listed in the 1870 census living with his father Henry Van Voorhis and his second wife, Elizabeth.20  He was one of the witnesses at the marriage of his sister, Maria, to Benjamin Vandewater in 1835.21  He was not recognized as Henry’s son as he did not appear in the sale of Henry’s estate in 1873.22   Included in the sale was an Edwin R. Van Voorhees, who was assumed to be one of Henry’s sons.  Actually, Edwin was William’s son, both of his parents having died.  This William married Helen Myers, a distant cousin, and the family is listed in the 1850 census of Fishkill.23  Helen died before 1863 when she is not mentioned in the sale of land as one of the heirs of Reuben Myers, Helen’s father, but Edwin R. Van Voorhis is.24

This placement caused a problem with identity of the wives of this new William’s father, Henry.  Both William (1813) and Maria (1816) were born before Henry’s marriage to Mary Jane Baxter in 1818.25  Also, census records suggest he was born in 1788 (in 1860 and 1870, in 1790 in 1865, and in 1795 in 1850), and died in 1870, shortly before the sale of his estate.26  Though Elias Van Voorhis27 did not identify his wife, he did identify that Hendrick, son of Abraham Van Voorhis and Marretje Phillips, was born 5 Jul 1788, and died 21 Jul 1870.  He married Mary Hughson 4 Apr 1812, before both William and Maria were born.  It is not known when Mary Hughson died, but he is the Henry who married second Elizabeth.  The other Henry, husband of Mary Jane Baxter, was the son of Zachariah Van Voorhis and Nancy Springsteen and was born 4 Dec 1796, as Elias Van Voorhis had originally stated.28  He died 15 Jan 1873.29  He is the same person as the previously unknown Henry Van Voorhis who married a woman name Catherine30 before 1860 (Mary Jane had died in 1849, and Henry does not appear in the 1850 census), and confirmed by his age listed in the 1860,31 186532 and 1870 census records.  The 1865 census says that Henry was the father of 5 children.  However, none of them are known and the 183033 and 1840 census34 records suggest that at least some of them died young.  Thus, it is clear that the children that were thought to be of Henry and Mary Jane Baxter, were actually children of Henry and Mary Hughson.

One other change is needed for the siblings of the new William.  The 1865 census of Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY states that his father, Henry, owned land and that his wife, Elizabeth, was the mother of 9 children.35  Adding William and subtracting Edwin left them with only 8 children.  The ninth was presumably James, born about 1827, living with his brother-in-law, Benjamin Vandewater, in the 1850 census,36 apparently apprenticing as a mason.  No further records have been found, so he probably died young.

Going back to identifying other records mentioning William H Van Voorhis, besides the witness at Cornelius Van Voorhis’ marriage, there were two records at the Presbyterian Church of New Hamburg.  A Wm H Van Voorhis was a witness at the marriage of Walter Phillips and Susan Brewer in 1837.37  These individuals have no known close familial ties, so possibly that was true for Cornelius as well.  A Wm Van Voorhis was baptized as an adult in 1843.38  Though none of the William Hs mentioned here have a known baptismal record, it would be unusual for him to be baptized as an adult, but his children not be.39  This suggests that this Wm H was either the son of Daniel Van Voorhis and Margaret Haines who had no children, or the son of John Van Voorhis and Cornelia Montross who had only one child who died young.

Given the new placement for the parents of William B as Jerome Van Voorhis and Sabra Scott, the circumstantial evidence that William H, husband of Ruhamy, was the son of John Van Voorhis and Sarah Southard, and the lack of other conflicting evidence, it is clear that his parents were, in fact, John Van Voorhis and Sarah Southard.

While examining the Henry Van Voorhis men above, a review of the probate of Cornelius Van Voorhis, husband of Catherine Thorn, was made and a couple of changes that need to be made arose there as well.  Cornelius’ probate40 mentions an infant, Mary Ann, daughter of Cornelius’ son, Samuel Verplank Van Voorhis, who had not previously been recognized.  Samuel had died and her guardian approved a sale that she had not taken part in.  That sale was to Cornelius’ son, Henry, from Cornelius’ other heirs.  Included in the heirs was Henry W. Van Voorhis and his wife, Catherine, of Boston.  Since Henry W. was not the son of Cornelius, his wife Catherine must have been his daughter, who is not otherwise mentioned.  Henry Wiltse Van Voorhis, son of Henry Van Voorhis and Hannah Flagaler, was known to have married a Catherine Van Voorhis and lived in Boston, but her parents had not been identified.  Now they are.
