The Family of Adriaen³ Bennet (Adriaen², Willem¹) (#10) and Barbara Vonk

93 (1962): 199, 94: 37.  Adrian’s father, Adriaen², was listed in the 1706 Tax listing of Brooklyn.[1] Though Ledley thought that Adriaen² had died by 1711 and his wife, Angeniejte, had moved with her son to the New Brunswick area, it is clear that both Adriaen² and his wife Angeniejte moved to New Brunswick by 1710[2] where he and his wife are listed separately as members.

Adriaen³ purchased land[3] at Freehold, Monmouth Co., New Jersey and had moved there by 17 May 1700 when he purchased land there from John Bowne and is noted as a resident in the deed.[4] Though two of his children were baptized in New York after that,[5] it was probably for the convenience of his family.  Adriaen³’s son, Isaac⁴ was baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church of Freehold and Middleton in 1717[6] and Adriaen³ served as an elder there in 1719,[7] so he was not the Adriaen Bennet in the 1711 membership listing of the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick.

The main changes to the family of Adriaen³ come from a quit claim deed between the children of Adriaen³ and Barbara acknowledging that their father had willed some land to his son, Adriaen⁴, effective after the decease of his wife, Barbara.[8] Though the will appears to have been lost, several things are now known from the deed.

94: 37.  Adriaen³ did not survive his wife, so he did not return to Brooklyn, marry a woman named Catherine, nor die there in 1731 as Ledley suggested may be the case.  He died sometime between 10 Apr 1740 when he purchased land from Coert and Sarah Van Voorhees and 17 Nov 1743 when his children executed the quit claim deed.  Catherine and her husband will be identified later.

Barbara Vonk died sometime after 1768.  As Barbara Bennet, widow, she was involved in several court cases[9] from 1767 through 1769.  One of the cases was concerning the removal of 300 trees from her property.

94: 37.  The deed suggests that Adriaen³ and Barbara did not have a son named Jan since he is not named in it.  It will later be shown that the Jan whom Ledley assumed was their son was actually Jan⁴ Bennet (Jan³, Willem², Willem¹).

94: 37.  Cornelius Kroesen, husband of their daughter, Catherine⁴, was of Burlington Twp., Burlington Co., NJ when he wrote his will on 29 Mar 1748/9.  He died before 7 Apr 1749 when his will was proved.[10] Catherine probably married second Rem Gerritsen before 02 Sep 1750 when their daughter, Barbara, was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Six Mile Run, NJ.[11] They had two other children baptized there, Gerrit on 03 May 1752 and Barbara on 17 Nov 1754.

94: 37.  A son named William⁴ is mentioned in the deed, but was not included by Ledley. He was probably the fellowbondsman named in the administration of the estate of James Reid on 18 Jan 1751.[12] Abraham Bennet and Volkert Bennet took the inventory of the estate.[13] No further trace.

94: 167.  Their granddaughter, Barbara⁵ (Cornelis⁴), wife of Cornelius Wyckoff, had another son, Jacob⁶, baptized on 16 Apr 1751 at the Presbyterian Church of Cranbury.[14]

94: 167.  Their granddaughter, Hendrickje⁵ (Cornelis⁴), married Abraham Williamson[15] and had a daughter, Neeltje⁶, named in Cornelius’ will.

94: 167.  Their granddaughter, Anna⁵ (Cornelis⁴), probably married first Frederick Van Liew[16] on 11 Oct 1750.  He died on 06 May 1758.[17]

94: 168.  Their granddaughter, Elizabeth⁵ (Cornelis⁴), wife of Barent Stryker, had seven other children, baptized at Six Mile Run,[18] New Brunswick[19] and Hillsborough, N.J.,[20] that were not listed by Ledley:

1.      Elizabeth⁶, baptized on 6 Jun 1760 at Six Mile Run, died young.

2.      Annetje⁶, baptized 10 Oct 1762 at Six Mile Run.

3.      Cornelius⁶, baptized on 27 May 1764 at Six Mile Run.

4.      Barent⁶, baptized on 20 Jul 1766 at Six Mile Run.

5.      Geertje⁶, baptized on 29 May 1768 at New Brunswick.

6.      Elizabeth⁶, baptized on 21 Oct 1771 at Hillsborough.

7.      Neeltje⁶, baptized on 20 Mar 1774 at New Brunswick.

94: 168.  Their granddaughter, Neeltje⁵ (Cornelis⁴), wife of Cornelius Boerum, had three other children,

1.      Annetje, baptized 8 Apr 1765,[21] died young.

2.      Geertje, baptized 1 Feb 1767.[22]

3.    Johannes, baptized 2 Sep 1768.[23]

94: 168, 94: 213. Their son, Isaac⁴, probably married second Elizabeth Kroesen. They had a son, Nicasies⁵, baptized on 22 Jan 1744. Ledley identified him as the son of Isaac⁴ Bennet (Isaac³, Adriaen², Willem¹) and Elizabeth Aersen.  However, the mother’s maiden name is Kroesen, not Aersen.  The witnesses were Nicasies Kroesen and Maritie Roland, probably the maternal grandparents[24], the child being named after his maternal grandfather.  Also, the baptism was just two months before the baptism of William, son of Isaac Bennet and Elizabeth Aersen on 21 Mar 1744, so it is very unlikely Nicasies was their son.  Isaac⁴ married third Mary Van Horn.  Their oldest daughter was named Elizabeth, presumably after Isaac’s second wife, Elizabeth Kroesen.

94: 168. Maria Van Horn, the third wife of their son, Isaac⁴, was the daughter of Abraham Van Horn and Mary Dungan, mentioned in her father’s will[25] as Mary Krewsen.  As Maria Bennet, widow, she married second Derrick Krusen on 16 Feb 1758 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Churchville, Pa.[26]

94: 168, 94: 209.  The other main change is in regards to their son, Adriaen⁴, whom Ledley was not able to trace any further.  He thought that Adriaen⁴ Bennet (Isaac³, Adriaen², Willem¹) had married second Jane Griggs.[27] However, as will be seen later, that Adriaen married Catherine Woertman and died in 1731.  It was Adriaen⁴ (Adriaen³, Adriaen², Willem¹) who married Jane Griggs, based on the later events in his life and the naming of his children.[28]

He is probably the Adrian Bennet listed in the records of the Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, N.J.[29] of 30 Mar 1750.  He had a horse stolen from his stable at Cranberry Mills in 1763.[30] The land that Adriaen⁴ inherited was near Cranbury,[31] in South Amboy,[32] bordering land owned by Daniel Griggs, his brother-in-law,[33] in 1768.  Adriaen Bennet, Sr. is listed in the tax list of South Amboy in 1780,[34] his widow being listed in 1785.[35] Aaron Bennet⁴, Sr. and Aaron Bennet⁵, Jr. are listed in other years.[36]

94: 209, 95: 18.  Adriaen⁴ Bennet and Jane Griggs had two daughters, Margaret⁵ and Barbara⁵, named in the will of Jane's brother,[37] Rueben.[38] As noted above in the tax lists, they probably had a son named Aaron⁵.  An Adrian and Jane Bennet had a son named Benjamin⁵ baptized at the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick on 26 Oct 1751,[39] probably another son of theirs.  Ledley identified Benjamin as the son of Adriaen⁴ Bennet (Abraham³, Adriaen², Willem¹) and Josyntje, but the mother’s name in his baptismal record is Janthe, clearly a variation of Jane, not Josyntje (who would have been almost 48 at the time[40] besides).  Thus, the children listed were named after their grandparents, Adriaen Bennet, Barbara Vonk, Benjamin Griggs and Margaret Johnson, following the normal Dutch naming conventions.

95: 165. Adriaen⁴’s son, Aaron⁵, married Sarah Schenck, daughter of Luke Schenck and Lammetje Remsen.[41] Aaron’s will,[42] dated 5 May 1812 in South Amboy, mentions his second wife, Sophia, and four of his five children; Jane⁶ (wife of Daniel Perrine), Lydia⁶ (wife of William Longstreet), Mary⁶ (wife of David Dey) and his deceased son, Aaron⁶ (whose four children are also mentioned).  Their son, Luke⁶, named after his maternal grandfather, predeceased his father.  Aaron Bennet, Jr. was appointed administrator of Luke’s estate,[43] with Aaron Bennet, Sr. and John Dey, both of South Amboy, serving as the fellowbondsmen.  Ledley thought this will pertained to Aaron⁶ Bennet (Peter Pra⁵, William⁴, Jacob³, Willem², Willem¹).  However, the mother in the baptismal records of his children, Aleda[44] and Peter Pra Bennet,[45] is Annetje, not Sophia. Neither of the only two known children of Aaron and Annetje Bennet is mentioned in this Aaron’s will.

He married Catherine Roberts, daughter of William Roberts and Elizabeth Siddons.  She was born on 24 Dec 1754 in Montgomery, PA. She died on 03 Apr 1836 in Harrison, WV.

He is listed in the 1782 Horsham Twp. Philadelphia Co., Effective Supply Tax, ser. 3, v. 16, p. 155. He is listed as a blacksmith in the Whitpain Twp, Philadelphia Co., PA, in the 1783 Effective Supply Tax, Penn Arch ser. 3, v 16, p 67. He was of Horsham Twp., Montgomery, PA, on 23 Feb 1784 when he bought land in Upper Dublin, Philadelphia, PA. Book 5, p. 85. He and his wife, Catherine, sold that land on 13 Apr 1785 to William Roberts. Book 5, p. 87. He moved to Harrison Co., VA(WV) by 1796. Abraham Bennet and Catherine Roberts had the following children:

            ii.         Elizabeth Bennet was born on 25 Mar 1779. She married Henry Tetrick on 08 Jan 1822 in Harrison, VA (George Swiger [her brother-in-law] was the fellowbondsman for their marriage license). He was born in 1771.

16b.     iii.        Abraham Bennet was born on 10 Sep 1780. He died on 26 Mar 1862 in Hopewell, Perry, OH. He married Martha Hull, daughter of Samuel Hull and Martha Glover, on 26 Nov 1801 in Harrison, WV. She was born in 1781. She died in 1858.

16c.     iv.         Jane Bennet was born on 21 Dec 1781. She died on 29 Jun 1812. She married Thomas Hall, son of Asa Hall and Sophia White, on 21 Feb 1799. He was born on 11 Jan 1779. He died on 28 Jul 1869 in Marion, WV.

            v.          Isaac Bennet was born on 29 Nov 1783. He died on 20 Feb 1806.

                        8 children are named in his will.  5 others appear in the 1850 census.  Two are children of his deceased son, Orrin: William and A.J.  Melinda is probably the Melvina Husted living with him in 1860, possibly the daughter of William's daughter, Ruhama (wife of James Husted), who was living next door in 1860.  Cecilia and Minerva are listed in the 1850 census, but do not fit with the 1840 census.  I am not sure who they might be.  His brother, Jacob, was living with him in the 1850 census, and probably the 1840 census as well.

John Ripley and Rachel Bennet had the following children:

            i.          Ambrose⁷ Ripley was born about 1815 in VA. He died about 1858. He married (1) Margaret Wilson She was born about 1815 in TN. He married (2) Catherine Unknown She was born in 1825 in TN. She died on 16 Jan 1898 in Lima, Beaverhead, MN.  He and others were sued by Polly Buler for damages on 2 Jan 1839 in Ray Co., MO.  In October 1842 in Holt Co., MO, he was assigned to a jury for the trial of Henry Roberts for murder.  He lived at Walden Grove, Atchison, MO for a short time before 1844, but moved on from there.  He enrolled as a private in Capt. James Craig's Company, C, Battalion Missouri Mounted Volunteers on 15 May 1847, age 31.  He was honorably discharged on 10 Nov 1848.  On 20 May 1851, he assigned 160 acres in Plattsburgh, Clinton, MO, SE 1/4 sec 23, Town 66, Range 39 to Squire Roberts.  67.163 Warrant Vol. 1053, p. 440.  In Dec 1854 he filed a claim with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  This is probably the claim for the lost of a horse by the Osago Nation, filed in court on 27 Sep 1854 for $250.00.  The case was argued on 26 Feb 1857 by the Department of Interior.  Part of argument was whether or not he was at that time in Missouri or in Indian Territory, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS5V-W75K-R?view=fullText&keywords=Ambrose+Ripley%2CMissouri&searchForm=advanced&lang=en

There are several inconsistencies in the records themselves and with how I am presenting this family:

1) Ambrose is listed as having been born in TN, not VA in the 1850 census.  In other records of his children, he is presented as having been born in TN, KY, MO and OH, but never in VA.

2) Ambrose's first wife was Margaret Wilson, married about 1833.  She supposedly died by 7/17/1845 when Catherine married Ambrose (according to her obituary).  However, the 1850 census still lists his wife as Margaret. not Catherine.  "Margaret" is listed as being 10 years older than Catherine was (according to census records, her obituary and her tombstone), but is probably the age Margaret would have been.  I have not seen any other record that Margaret was used as a second name for Catherine.

3) No son named Charles or Ambrose is listed in the 1850 census, though he was surely born by then.  While step-children sometimes are sent to live with relatives when a man remarries, it would be unusual for the children of the new wife to do so.  The death certificate of Jesse, son of Charles Abrose, says his father was born in Clearonda, IA, probably Clarinda, the county seat of Page, IA.  Margaret consistently listed her birthplace as IA.

 

I am assuming Ambrose did not speak much about his parents or siblings and that Margaret, the mother, in the 1850 census is simply a mistake.  Ambrose's daughter, Ellen from his first marriage, was living with Solomon Adams in the 1860 census.  I assume Ambrose was living elsewhere in 1850, but I have not found him.  Ambrose's daughter, Margaret, was married in Kansas City in 1859.  I don't have any information on Ambroses' other children in the 1850 census, Jane, Marion, or Polly, to confirm their relationship with the rest of the family.

 

Others have listed his name as Charles Ambrose Ripley, but I have not found an instance where he used the name Charles, so I have left it off.

            iv.         Amy Ripley was born about 1819. She died about 1841.

            v.          Elias Ripley was born about 1820. He died in 1841.

            vi.        Elizabeth Ripley was born on 02 Sep 1823 in VA. She died on 17 May 1855. She married Robert Todd on 19 Jan 1854 in Des Moines, IA.

            vii.       Lewis Ripley was born about 1825. He died on 15 Jul 1898. He married (1) Augusta Merrick on 05 Jun 1855. He married (2) Elizabeth Jackson on 17 May 1860 in Des Moines, IA.

            viii.      Catherine Ripley was born on 23 Sep 1825 in VA. She died on 27 Jan 1898. She married Robert Allen on 23 Jan 1861 in Des Moines, IA. He was born on 23 Jan 1817. He died on 19 Jan 1907.
