Jansen Family of NYC, New Utrecht and NJ

This family is sometimes confused with the family of Jan Andriessen of Albany.  That family moved to Flatbush, NY.  I have covered that family is a separate post.

Updated 19 Nov 2023 adding more families,

Descendants of Jan Andriessen

Generation No. 1

1.  JAN1 ANDRIESSEN died Aft. 1709.  He married (1) GRIETJE JANS DORENS.  She died bef. 1692.  He married (2) MARIA RUTGERS 29 Feb 1691/92 in DRC of NYC, NY, daughter of RUTGER WOUTERSZEN and STYNTJE JACOBS.  She was born abt. 1643 in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and died aft. 1708.

Notes for JAN ANDRIESSEN:
This family is somewhat speculative.  Baptismal records exist for their children, except the 2 oldest, Sophia and Andries.  Sophia appears to be Grietje's daughter from a previous marriage based on several baptismal records (see below).  Andries is assumed to be their son based on his name (being named after his paternal grandfather), his location at marriage (NY where Jan Andriessen's family lived based on where their children were baptized), the naming of his second son, Jan, presumably after his paternal grandfather, the naming of 2 of his sons, Hendrick and Dirck after their presumed paternal uncles, and the presence of Derick Johnson as a witness for his presumed nephew, Derick, son of Myndert, son of Andries. at the DRC of Harlingen.

In the town of New Utrecht, Kings Co., NY in 1698 [10]
Andreis Jansen, Hendrickien, 4 children   - [he m Hendrickje/Hanna Mynderts in 1690]
Hendrick Jansen, Maria, 1 child                - [he m Maria Mynderts in 1694]
Hendrick Matysen [Smock], Guertien, Aertien, 3 other children
Dirck Jansen was not listed in this census, but his future wife, Aertje Smock was, married by 1710.

22 Jul 1702; Joseph Harton, Sophia Janson; Margarita; Dirk Jansen & wife Maria Meinders (probably should have included Hendrick Jansen as Maria Meinders was his wife, not Dirck’s who may not have been married at the time, see the next baptism.  The earliest known record of Dirck’s marriage is their probable witnessing of the baptism of Aertje’s niece, Sarah Smock in 1710)

Some list a daughter named Elizabeth, born about 1684.

Notes for GRIETJE JANS DORENS:
Her daughter, Sophia, appears in the records with the patronymic names Jans and Claes.  My guess is that her mother, presumably Grietje Jans/Dorens, was married to a Claes before she married Jan and Sophia is a daughter of that first marriage .  Grietje may have married three times, the second being Laurens Duyts on 01 Jan 1665/66 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Bergen, NJ (no indication in the record if either were previously married, but he was).  They had one child, Catherine, baptized10 Mar 1666/67.  Laurens was buried on 16 Jan 1667/68 at Bergen, NJ, leaving time for her to have married Jan Andriessen before his son Andries was born about 1669.  Catherine married Joost Palding on 01 Apr 1688 at the Reformed Dutch Church of NYC, NY.  A Jan Andriessen (possibly Catherine’s stepfather) served a witness for the baptism of their eldest child on 07 Apr 1689, an Andries Jansen (possibly her half-brother) was a witness for their son, Abraham, on 23 May 1697, and Joost and Catherine were witnesses for the baptism Roger Parker, son of Roger Parker and Sophia Jans (possibly Catherine’s half-sister), see below.

Laurens Duyts’ wife, Grietje Jans, is sometimes thought to be the same person as Geesje Jans whom he committed adultery with (mentioned three times in the [New Amsterdam] Council Minutes 1656–1658, Translated and Edited by Charles T. Gehring and Janny Venema, pages 578, 585, 587).  However, the names are not the same and I have not seen a record suggesting they were.  Laurens Duyts’ first wife, Itje Jans, was forced by him to commit adultery with John Parcel.  Shortly after all four were convicted of adultery, John Parcel and Itje Jans asked for and received permission to marry.  At the time Geesje was the wife of Jan Jansen Smit, but I have not traced either of them further.  Almost eight years later on 11/15/1665, Laurens and Grietje received permission to marry, citing among the issues the fact that Ytie (his former wife) had married and had children with John Botcher (Parcels) (Source given as New Jersey State Archives, but nothing specific given).  I have not been able to review the petition, but it may be that only Laurens needed to seek permission as he had not been formally divorced.  Though Geesje Jans had been banned from New Amsterdam for 30 years, Grietje moved back to New Amsterdam in 1668 after her husband died, also suggesting she was not Geesje, though the ban may not have been enforced since New Amsterdam fell to the English in 1664.  Though uncertain, I believe Grietje Jans and Geesje Jans are two different people.

Sophia was born about 1664, assuming she married at 17 and had her first child at 18.

Notes for JOSEPH HORTON:
Joseph3 Horton son of Capt Joseph2 Horton was deceased before 1717 as proved by the following entry on the Court Records General Sessions of the Peace held at Westchester June 7 1717 John Horton appeared upon his indictment & referred it to the consideration of ye bench & they having considered the affidavit of Polecarpus Nelson before John Drake Esq and heard the evidence of Daniel Horton & Joseph Horton sons of Joseph Horton dec d the Court orders he be discharged by proclamation Westchester County Land Records Liber D p 51 Joseph3 Horton deeded one half of his White Plains possessions to his son in law Roger Park Roger Park the Hartford Rye Patentee was deceased in 1690 therefore the Rye historian is in error regarding this family. Roger Park's widow married Joseph^ Horton, and the Roger Park to whom Joseph^ Horton gave the White Plains land, was his stepson. This is proved by the following entries on the Dutch Reformed Church Records (N. Y . Gen. and Bio. Soc. Coll.,Vol. i): "Roger Parke" and "Sophia Claes" had Marie bapt. Dec. 26, 1686; wit. Catharina de Riemer and Jan Andries (p. 177). "Rodgert Parker" (dec'd) and "Sophia Jans" had "Rodgert" bapt. June I, 1690; wit. Joost Raiding and Catharina Laurens {p. 197). Notes for ANDREW JANSEN: They may have had a son named Derick, see bapt at Harlingen 7 Nov 1728

It seems likely that Hendrick Jansen, h/o Maria Mynderts, and Dirck Janse, h/o Guertje Smock, are his brothers.

Hendrickje is named as Hannah Andriessen in an agreement among the children in Lib 4, Kings County deeds, abt 116 (see also 199).

Dirk Jansen & Aeltje (Aertje?) Jansen were witnesses for the baptism of Sarah Smock on 13 Jul 1710

Notes for AERTJE HENDRICKSE SMOCK:
I have presumed there is an error in her baptismal record:
1677 June 11; Aertje; parents Hendrick Jansen, Geurtjen Hendricks; witnesses Jan Keersen, Hendrickje Stevens.
DRC of Brooklyn

She is probably the artie HenRickx who was received into the church upon confession on 23 Jun 1688.  This is the youngest I have seen but there are others who were 11 or 12.

I can only find records of 8 women named Aertje in the early records of the Dutch Church in NY & NJ, through about 1725.
4 are descendants of Aertje Bastiaens.
4 are Aertje Gerrits and her descendants.

The mother's name is listed as Maria Van Natta for Andrew.  The witnesses were Andrew Johnson & Henrietta Courts, the paternal grandparents.  The maiden name of Maria and/or Anna was probably Van Etten.  He is likely the Andries Jansen who later married Elizabeth Bowman, see below.

From Perry Streeter:
John Griggs, b. before 1731, named in honor of paternal grandfather and father; probably identical with the John Griggs who m. (lic.) 2 Feb. 1758 Martha Schenk[120] and/or the John Griggs of Newburgh, Ulster Co., N.Y., who made his will 3 Nov. 1779, identifying wife Martha, eldest son Samuel, sons John and Ferdinand, as well as daughters Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary; the will was proved 5 Dec. 1782.[121] The occurrence of the distinctive name, Ferdinand, in this family suggests a possible connection to the Van Sicklen family of Gravesend. Court Johnson, who Stillwell identified as a son of Hendrick and and Eva (Van Sicklen) Johnson,122 may have been identical with the Coert Johnson who served as a baptismal sponsor for a John Griggs at Gravesend on 21 August 1768 and Ledley thought that the latter was probably the son of John4 Griggs and Martha Schenck.123

18.  COERT3 JANSEN (HENDRICK2, JAN1 ANDRIESSEN) was born Abt. 1712 in NY.  He married FEMMETJE UNKNOWN

Notes for COERT JANSEN:
This family is speculative.  They are based on the baptismal records shown below, the will of John Van Dyck,  the nameing of their children and a letter to Teunis Bergen:
1) Maria had 2 of her oldest children named after their paternal grandparents.  Phebe and Court were her other oldest children.
2) Catherine's husband had his oldest children by his first wife named after their grandparents.  Phebe and Court (after Cornelius named after his father) where her oldest children.
3) Hendrick' oldest known son and daughter were Phebe and Court.
4) Letter of Henry Van Sicklen, grandson of Catherine saying Catherine was the sister of the grandfather of Judge Nicholas Stillwell, that is, Maria Jansen, wife of Richard Stillwell.  See
http://bklyn-genealogy-info.stevemorse.org/Town/Homesteads/Stillwell.html
for the ancestors of Judge Nicholas Stillwell (h/o Sarah Stevense Voorhees)

His wife is probably Phebe (Leben) Griggs, baptized in 1715 at Gravesend, d/o Daniel & Catherine.  Did they also have a daughter named Martha after her paternal grandmother (whom Court's daughter was named after)?

Maria, Feb 13 1780, Coert Johnson, Phebe Stryker [FL]
John, Aug 21,1768 John Grigh, Maartje do, Coert Johnson [GE]

19 Mar 1777 Phebe,, Hendrik Johnson, Elisabeth Lake, Coert Johnson & wife Phebe Stryker [FL]
Phebe & Maria, March 30 1783, Hendrik Johnson, Elisabeth do, Court Johnson, Phebe do [GE]
Court, Dec 25, 1788, Hendrick Johnson, Elisabeth do, Court Johnson [GE]

Who is the Court Johnson whose wife, Phebe Griggs, was admitted to  membership at Gravesend on 25 Aug 1794?

The IGI lists the following children of Court and :Phebe Johnson:
Maria, b 8 Sep 1746
Martha, b 13 Mar 1748
Phebe, b 29 Dec 1753
Hendrick, b 25 Jan 1758

1790 Census Gravesend
Court Johnston 2 1 7 0 1
It appears there is more than one family here. This is one conjectural reconstruction:
  Court, Jr. (or Sr.)
  Hendrick, s/o Court Sr.
  Court, s/o Hendrick
Phebe Stryker,/Griggs wife of Court Jr. (or 2nd wife of Sr.)
  Elizabeth, wife of Hendrick
  Phebe, d/o Hendrick
  Maria, d/o Hendrick
  Neeltje d/o Hendrick
  Catherine, d/o, of Hendrick
Maria d/o Court Jr. (or Sr.)
From this it appears that Court Sr. and wife had died.  So who is Phebe Griggs, wife of Court Jansen in 1794, misprint, 2nd marriage?  Who is the 2nd male living with Coert in 1800?  Who is the younger male in the 1810 census?

1800 Census of Gravesend

The Hubbard House and the Development of Gravesend in the Nineteenth Century

One of the few surviving Dutch houses in New York City on its original site, the Hubbard House occupies a portion of Plantation 15, one of the original wedge-shaped farm lots that radiated from the four squares at the center of Gravesend. This lot was bordered on the east by the highway (now McDonald Avenue) that ran from the Gravesend town center to Kings Highway, the main road to the neighboring towns of New Utrecht and Flatlands. Plantation 15 was originally allotted to Thomas Morrell and passed through several owners during the seventeenth century, including Nicholas Stillwell, Joseph Goulding, and Joachim Gulick.14 By the 1770s it had been divided into several parcels, including a 5 3/10 acre tract between present day Avenue S and present-day Avenue T that was owned by Court Johnson (aka Coert Jansen), a farmer of Dutch descent who resided in Gravesend from around 1755 and was a slave owner.15 This property subsequently passed to his son Hendrick Johnson (1751-1815), a farmer prominent
in Gravesend town government in the 1780s and 1790s, who married Elizabeth Lake (1758-1831), daughter of Daniel Lake and Neeltje Voorhees Lake.16 Based on census records, he does not appear to have been a slave owner.

Hendrick died in 1815 without leaving a will. In 1830, shortly before the death of his wife, their five surviving children entered into an agreement to divide two pieces of land he had owned in Gravesend.17 The heirs had this parcel surveyed and divided into five lots, each slightly over seventy-eight feet wide and approximately 500 feet deep, extending just beyond the west side of present-day Van Sicklen Street. Hendrick’s son Court H. Johnson (1788-?) received the center lot, on which there seems to have been a farmhouse (demolished).18 The other lots were probably open farmland. Two of Hendrick’s daughters, Phebe Voorhies (1783-1874), widow of Jacobus S. Voorhies, and Nelly Hubbard (aka Neeltje, Ellen, or Helen; 1780-1865), widow of farmer Abraham Hubbard, a descendent of Sergeant James Hubbard, built houses on the lots they received. (The Voorhies house has been demolished.) The houses were probably constructed by 1840, when the sisters were listed in close proximity to each other on the federal census, and, were certainly standing by 1849, when the three houses were represented with the names of their owners on Sidney’s Map of Twelve Miles Around New York City.19 This house, the southernmost of the three, built for Nelly Hubbard, has been dated c. 1825-35 by Russell Powell and William McMillan of Island Housewrights Corp., specialists in the history of building technology.20 Given this evidence, a date between 1830, when Nelly inherited the land, and 1835 seems most likely for this house.

14 On the early history of this property see Maud Dilliard, Old Dutch Houses of Brooklyn (New York: Richard R.
Smith, 1945), 19; Kings County, Office of the Register, Liber Deeds and Conveyances, Liber 2, 111, 111A, 134.

15 This tract was referred to in a conveyance for a neighboring piece of property that had been confiscated following the Revolutionary War. See Conveyances Liber 6, 344E. Court Johnson (aka Coert Jansen) was the son of Hendrick Johnson, a New Utrecht farmer, and Eva Van Sicklen, a descendent of Anthony Jansen van Sallee and Grietje Reyniers, who had grown up in Gravesend in the Van Sicklen House (aka as the Lady Moody House) at 27 Gravesend Neck Road Court was first listed in the Gravesend town records in 1755 and served at various times as a pound master, weigh master and assessor. He probably married twice: 1 undetermined, 2 Phebe Styker aka Phebe Griggs (parentage undetermined). Because Court had a nephew named Court Johnson who lived in Gravesend during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the two in historic records. The first Federal Census of 1790 lists two Court Johnsons in Kings County, one residing in Brooklyn and the other living in Gravesend. Both were slave owners, listing one slave in each of their households. For the Johnson family genealogy see Stillwell, “Gravesend Settlers,” 201-202; Abstracts of Wills on File in the Surrogates Office, City of New York, Collections of The New-York Historical Society 1892-1908 [hereafter WNYHS], v. 6, 166; New York City Municipal Archives, “Gravesend Town Records: Town Meetings 1704-1872,” Translations/ Transliterations, reel, 145, 37, 39, 40,46; Perry Streeter, “The Griggs Family of Gravesend and New Jersey, New York Genealogical and Biographical Record [hereafter NYG&B Record], v. 137, 121, 124; United States, Census 1790, Kings County, Gravesend, 13 [stamped 345], Kings County, Brooklyn, 6. Richard McCool also generously made a portion of an unpublished manuscript on the Van Sicklen family genealogy available to me through Harry Macy, Jr. of the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society in 2006.

16 Hendrick resided in New Utrecht in 1779 when he served as a witness to the will of Johannes Emans WNYHS, v. 9, 244. The United States Census, 1800, for Kings County indicates that he was residing in Gravesend with his wife, four daughters, and son. He does not appear to have owned slaves. For Hendrick Johnson see also “Gravesend Town Records,” reel 145, 60, 62, 64, 66; Josephine Frost, Inscriptions from Gravesend Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York (Brooklyn, 1913), 48, 49; Devereaux Lake, A Personal Narrative of Some Branches of the LakeFamily in America (Lorain, Ohio: privately printed, 1937, 51; Arthur Adams and Sarah Anna Risley, A Genealogy of the Lake Family of Great Egg Harbour (Hartfort, Ct, privately printed, 1912), 31.

17 Kings County, Office of the Register, Liber Deeds and Conveyances, Liber 710, 465.

18 The obituary of a subsequent owner, Jacobus Ryder, indicates that the house had stood “for almost a century.” Ryder replaced it with a large two-story frame dwelling on Van Sicklen Street in 1885. See “Obituary, Jacobus Ryder,” Brooklyn Eagle, Apr. 19, 1900, 3; “Old Gravesend,” Brooklyn Eagle, July 30, 1899, 199.

19 Court H. Johnson sold his house and lot to Jacobus Ryder in 1845 (Deeds Liber 142, 427). The name of A. Ryder (Ann Ryder), Jacobus’s wife, appears on the 1849 map.

My comments:
1)  Presuming Coert married Phebe Griggs, then Jochem Gulick may have sold part of his land to the husband of the step-daughter, Phebe, of his daughter, Jacomyntje.  Unfortunately, it is not stated in the book how Coert Jansen acquired the property, only that he had it in by 1769.
2)  This Coert Jansen was not the son of Hendrick Jansen and Eva Van Sicklen.  Hendrick’s will states that his oldest son was Hendrick (see below).  His oldest children were baptized at the DRC of New Utrecht:
1.  Hendrick Jansen baptized 1 APR 1733 in near New Utrecht, NY
2.  Ferdinand Jansen baptized 8 DEC 1734 in near New Utrecht, NY
3.  Mary Jansen baptized 13 NOV 1736 in near New Utrecht, NY
Coert was born no earlier than late 1735.  He would not have had a son by 1751 nor be a slave owner in 1755.
Coert, son of Hendrick Jansen and Eva Van Sicklen, is probably the one who married Neeltje Brouwer by license dated 8 Feb 1779 and died 14 Jun 1813, buried at Gravesend. She died 4 Apr 1816 and is buried at Gravesend. Notes for FEMMETJE UNKNOWN:
From Perry Streeter:
I suspect that Phebe GRIGGS  may have died young since she was not identified in her father's will.  However, I am wondering if she may have remained behind in Gravesend with members of her mother's unknown family when the GRIGGS and GULICK families migrated to New Jersey. Does anyone have any evidence that Phebe GRIGGS
 survived?

Their children from the IGI are:

40.  COERT4 JANSEN (COERT3, HENDRICK2, JAN1 ANDRIESSEN) was born Abt. 1755 in NY.  He married PHEBE STRYKER Bef. Mar 1777.  She was born Bef. 1762.

Notes for PHEBE STRYKER:
She could be a daughter of Cornelius Stryker, brother of Samuel, and an unknown first wife.  He married Mary Lake, supposedly in 1790 when he was 51.  His oldest daughter, Rebecca, had a daughter named Femmetje.  Mary may have been the daughter of Derick Lake and Maria Voorhees, probably born more like 1758, married in 1790 at 32, not 42, and having her last child in 1796 at 38, not 48. In 1800 in Gravesend he had 2 sons (Cornelius & Derick) under 10, 2 daughters under 10 (Rebecca & Ann) and a wife not yet 45.  I did not find him in the 1790 census though he was supposedly married by then.  There is a slight chance Phebe Stryker is the d/o Gerrit Stryker and Ida Vandeventer (or an unknown first wife).  Their only daughter, Geertje, married Barent Bennet & had a daughter named Femmetje. Does his marriage record show he was not previously married?

Child of COERT JANSEN and PHEBE STRYKER is:

Notes for MARIA JANSEN:
I have not proved her parents.  Her maiden name, Jansen, is given in the membership records of the DRC of Gravesend.  She is not the daughter of Hendrick Jansen & Eva Van Sicklen, nor their granddaughter.  Since Andries & Myndert moved to NJ I have placed her here.
1789 Members Maria Johnson, wife of Richard Stillwell

Notes for RICHARD STILLWELL:
Nicholas, Aeltje, Ida, Joost, Rutgert were siblings/parents of Richard.  Court and Hendirck are Jansen names, Was Neeltje a sister, witness at the baptism of her niece? Neeltje, wife of Daniel is thought to be the daughter of Coert Voorhees, but was he Coert Johnson?  On the whole it does not appear they were sisters.

But to return to the old home,  Mr. STILLWELL tells me it was built about 1808 by his grandfather, Nicholas R. STILLWELL, who was the oldesst of a family of nine, having having been born on August 8th, 1768. He died December 25th, 1809 and married Nellie KOENHOVEN (COUWENHOVEN?), of New Utrecht. Their only son was  Judge STILLWELL. Nicholas R. STILLWELL was the son of Richard STILLWELL and Mary JOHNSON. his wife.Richard STILLWELL was born September 22nd, 1734. he was the son of Colonel Nicholas STILLWELL,
who was born December 2nd, 1709, and marrried December 22nd, 1733, Altie VAN BRUNT; born April 22nd, 1712, died October 1st. 1776.  Colonel STILLWELL was with the militia in the Battle of Long Island, but after the battle returned home to protect his property, and, being an old man, did not rejoin the army.. He died before the war was ended.
His father, Richard STILLWELL, was born May 11th, 1677; married first, Maria. whose last name I have been unable to find: and second, October 22nd, 1733, Altie DITMARS, who died February 11th, 1758. He is supposed by BERGEN to have owned a farm at Sellers Neck, which in 1880 was owned Cornelius STRYKER. a descendant. In 1702 he was High Sheriff, in 1715 Colone1 of militia, and in 1725-27 a member of the Colonial Assembly.
He was a son of Nicholas STILLWELL and Catharine  MORGAN, his wife. Nicholas STILLWELL  came over with his father in 1638. He was born in 1636, and married the mother of Richard, Noyember 6th, 1671. They had a civil marriage before Justice HUBBARD,

  1. Excellent blogpost Mike!

I have a couple bookkeeping items:
    1) In the second generation A), The NYG&B Record is quoted as Volume 100, page 33. It should read Vol 49, p295-296.
    2) It appears that there are sources noted in the first generation - I see a [12] and [17] at a minimum, however I do not see the sources listed at the bottom of the blogpost like are in other blogposts. Did they get cut off accidentally?
    3) In the first generation 4 children are listed for Sophia Jans by her first husband and 6 by her second. Then in the second generation A) only 2 children are listed for her first marriage. I am guessing this is an oversight and you meant to include them. I think they all belong given the sponsors and parent/child names. Is this an oversight?

    Additions:
    1) In the list of baptisms: The sponsors of the 1696 Nov 25 baptism Thomas Robinson and wife Hannah are uncle and aunt to the child. Sophia’s husband Joseph Horton's sister was Hannah.
    2) Baptism sponser Joost Palding (Joost Paldinck) is discussed in the same RECORD page as above (v49p296) below the Joseph Horton section.
    3) Sophia Jans married a third time between 1711 and 1713 to Jonathan Vowles [see Theresa Hall Bristol manuscript titled , "Descendants of Capt. Joseph Horton of Rye, New York" vol1 p32 - lots of good data on Joseph and Sophia from pages 25-33. The manuscript resides at the NEHGS]

    Discussion:
It would be interesting to understand who Sophia Jans children are named after. I will number based on the first generation listing of all 10 children.
#4 Roger is named after his recently deceased father
#7 Joseph and #8 Jannetje are named after the paternal grandparents
#1 Geertruyd is named after the maternal grandmother
#5 Jonathan is named after the maternal step grandfather
#9 Sophia is named after her mother
That leaves #2 Annetie, #3 Marie, #4 Marie, and #10 Margarita with no explanation I can come up with. Could Marie be from Mary Mynderts or Maria Peters or Maria Loockermans?

  2. Steve,

    Thanks for your comments.

On the bookkeeping: I have corrected the NYG&B Record to the correct reference you gave. The numbers 12 and 17 were just my abbreviations. I have added the actual source references inline. This was one of my earliest posts and I wasn't using footnotes consistently. I also added in the the other 2 children of Roger Parker and Sophia Claes. I must have found them later, but didn't add them everywhere.

Thanks for the additions. I didn't add Sophia's third husband, but directed readers to your comment for that information and the discussion on the naming of her children.

    On the children:
#5 Jonathan may have been named after his paternal uncle, Jonathan Horton, see RECORD 49:295
#1 Geertruyd would not be the equivalent of Grietje. It is possible that her father, Claes, married first an unknown woman who was the mother of Sophia, and Grietje was his 2nd wife. I have not looked at that possibility. Geertruyd may have been named after maternal aunt, Gertruyd Andriessen.
Other comments or observations on the discussion are welcome.

  3. Regarding Grietje Jans here is an excerpt from "Court Minutes of New Amsterdam 1664-1666 [1665] pg. 272" Not sure if this is the same Grietje Jans or not but the Sophia's year of birth aligns nicely...

Grietje Jans being sent for by the Court at the City Hall, on the complaints of the surgeon and others touching her scandalous, irregular, whorish and evil life and behaviour, is informed (whereas she now being with child is excused from further corporal punishment which she well deserves ) that she must depart within 14 days or 3 weeks ' time from this City on pain of bodily correction . Ady as above.

  4. Thanks for the note. However, though not certain I think this Grietje Jans was the person living in adultery with Laurens Duyts:
11/25/1658 Geesie (Grietje) Jansen for living in adultery with Laurens Duyts was sentenced to the whipping post, the upper part of her body stripped naked, and two rods placed in her hand. She was also to be banished for 30 years, and she was to pay full costs.
New York Historical Manuscripts: Dutch, Vol VIII, pg 1055 (I have not been able to review this source)
I believe she is the Grietje Jans who later married Laurens Duyts on 1 Jan 1666 at Bergen, NJ
Yearbook of the Holland Society of New York, 1914, Bergen Book, Vol 2, pg 57.
