Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Some of His Descendants”, by Wilson V. Ledley

What started as an online research project between Chris Chester, Liz Johnson and the author regarding the ancestry of an Elizabeth Bennet, quickly developed into an examination of several branches of the family of Willem Adriaense Bennet.  Though nothing of substance was discovered about Elizabeth Bennet, a considerable amount of material concerning the descendants of Willem Adriaense Bennet was uncovered.

In the fifty years since Mr. Ledley wrote his article on the Bennet family,1 several documents have come to light giving rise to the need to update his genealogy.  In particular, a deed2 between the children of Adriaen3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1), a probate record3 regarding the estate of Joseph Fenton, husband of Magdalena Joosten, widow of Isaac3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1), and a probate record4 regarding the estate of Jan3 Bennet (Willem2, Willem1) have implications not only for their descendants but the broader family as well.  This article examines the families of many of the grandchildren of the immigrant Willem Adriaense Bennet for those and other changes.   For reference to Ledley’s article, the individual’s number assigned by Ledley is included after their name where deemed appropriate.

Much of Mr. Ledley’s work was based on the earlier work of Andrew D. Chidsey in “The Genealogy of the Bennet Family of Long Island, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania,”5 so these corrections apply to that work as well.  Other corrections to this family were published in the RECORD,6  and are not repeated here.  Additions to this family were made in Kenneth A. Bennett’s “William Adriaense Bennet, Descendants and Related Families,”7 however, Mr. Bennett chose Mr. Ledley's article as the basis of his work so very few corrections were made in that work.  Some additions were made also in Barbara Barth’s “The Dorland Enigma Solved.”8  Those additions to the first six generations are noted here for the sake of completeness.

The Family of Jan3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1) (#9) and Femmetje Rapalje

94 (1963): 37.  Their daughter, Angeniejte4, did not marry her cousin, Johannes Bennet, as Ledley thought.  She married Rem Vanderbeek (Remsen) by license dated 11 Apr 1737.9  Angeniejte was a witness for the baptism of two of her nieces, daughters of Hendrick Wyckoff and Annetje Bennet.10  At the first baptism, before her marriage, she and her brother, Johannes, were the witnesses.  At the second baptism, after her marriage, she and her new husband, Rem Remsen, were the witnesses.  Angeniejte had a daughter, Femmetje5,11 named after her maternal grandmother.   Angeniejte, wife of Johannes Bennet, will be discussed later.

94: 159.  Their granddaughter, Geertje5 (Adriaen4), married Jacob Boerum.  Ledley had identified Geertje as the daughter of Jan4 Bennet (Jan3, Willem2, Willem1), but as will be seen later, that Jan Bennet had an entirely different family.  Geertje’s son, Aari6, was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Jamaica on 23 Jul 1749.12  The witnesses were Ari Bennet and Anatyi Bennet, the maternal grandparents. 

94:160.  The wife of their great-grandson, Jan6 (Cornelius5, Adrian4) was Antje Remsen, daughter of Aris Remsen and Jannetje Van Nostrand, who names John Bennet as the husband of his daughter in his will of 14 Aug 1778.13  Ares Remsen was the witness for the baptism of his grandson, Bernardus Bennet, on 5 May 1782 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Success, NY.14  The 1790 census of Jamaica, Queens, NY shows three males under the age of 16 in the household of Ann Bennet, presumably his widow.  Their recorded sons were Aury and Bernardus.  The third son is probably John Bennet, born 24 Aug 1776, died 20 Nov 1853 (according to his tombstone),15 married his cousin Harmpje7 (Harriet) Bennet (Isaac6, Jan5, Adrian4).  Their eldest son, Jan8, was named after his paternal grandfather, their eldest daughter, Sarah Ann, was named after her paternal and maternal grandmothers, their third son, Isaac, was named after his maternal grandfather, and their fourth son, Remsen, was given the maiden name of his paternal grandmother.

94: 160.  Their son, Adriaen4, had a daughter named Femmetje5 after her paternal grandmother, born about 1738.  She was of Jamaica when she married Nathaniel Higby on 06 Jun 1758 at the Presbyterian Church of Newtown.16  Nathaniel’s will17 mentions his wife, Phebe, and his brother-in-law, Cornelius Bennet.  Cornelius Bennet paid for her grave when she died in December 1778.18  This implies that the maiden name of Cornelius’ wife is unknown, not Higby as Ledley presumed.

94:160.  In “A Documentary History of the Dutch Congregation of Oyster Bay19 Stoutenburgh identified a Bennet whose parentage he did not know and whom Ledley did not pick up on.  Only his nickname, Nosh, is known, and no civil or religious records have been found of him.  His children are known from the will of his son, John B. Bennet, written on 26 Dec 1846 at Jamaica, NY.20  He lists his siblings as Aury, Peggy, Hanorche, and Sarah.  Based on the approximate birthdates of his sons (1780 and 1786), Nosh was probably born in the late 1750s.  The name Aury, is a variation of Adriaen, from Arien to Arie.  That form appears first in Aari, son of Jacob Boerum and Geertje5 Bennet (Adrian4, Jan3), baptized 23 Jul 174921 who later uses the form Aury.  Her sister, Phebe, also had a son named Aury Higby.  Given that Jan5 Bennet (Adrian4, Jan3) left a will naming his children, Nosh is probably the son of Cornelius5, Jan’s brother.

Each of the sons of Cornelius4 (Adrian3) had sons named Aury or Adrian, possibly named after their grandfather.  Speculative, but Nosh may be the Aaron Bennet (Aaron being a variation of Arien/Adrian) who appears in the 1790 census records of Newtown, NY, which borders Jamaica.  He was 45 or older, had one son over 15, two sons under 16, and apparently three daughters.  This puts him close to Nosh’s age and the two younger sons and three daughters agree with his family.  The older son may be Abel Bennet who died before  13 Oct 1824 when his will was proved,22 mentioning his sons, Abel and Aaron.  If Aaron is Nosh’s son, he may have been omitted from his brother John’s will because he predeceased him.

Aaron was not found in the religious records of Newtown until after his apparent second marriage to Dorothy Hallett in Jun 1799 at the Presbyterian Church of Newtown, NY.23  They had two children baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Bushwick, NY: Elizabeth, born on 29 Oct 1802, and Francis T., born on 16 Jan 1805.  They may have both died young as the daughter does not appear to be listed in the 1810 census and the son is not listed in the 1820 census.

94.163.  Their grandson, William5 Bennet (Jeronimus4) married Elizabeth Carpenter (The Wright Family of Oyster Bay, L. I, compiled by Howard Delano Perrine, pg. 105).  Their daughter, Phebe married Daniel Wright and was born sometime between 1775 -1784 according to census records.  Their son Henry was also born between 1775-1784 (see next paragraph), so it is likely that all of their children were born later than Ledley thought.  That suggests that his daughter, Elizabeth, is not the one who married James McGara, and his daughter, Sarah, is not the one who married John Cook.

94.164.  Ledley mentions the difficulty of establishing a marriage for their grandson Johannes5 (Johannes4).  Stoutenburgh says he died unmarried on 31 Oct 1821, but he also mentions a third grandson of Johannes4 named Johannes24 who married Phebe Armstrong without stating who the father was, causing Ledley to believe Johannes5 must have married.  However, it was their granddaughter, Margaret5 (Johannes4), “Greachey” as named in her father’s will, written 10 Jun 1797 at Oyster Bay, proved 9 Apr 1800,25 who had a son named Johannes Bennet, also named in the will.  He is the one who married Phebe Armstrong.

Hanorche is variation of Nauche, itself a variation of Hannah.  As Nauche, wife of Hendrick Hendrickson, she joined the Dutch Reformed Church of Jamaica on 28 Apr 1826, on the same day as her sister, Peggy (History of the First Reformed Dutch Church of Jamaica, L.I. By Henry Onderdonk, William Henry De Hart, pg. 19??).  She is named a Nauche in the baptismal records of her children.  She is listed as Hannah Hendrickson, age 60, living with her son, Bernardus Hendrickson, in the 1850 census of Jamaica, Queens, NY.  In the death record of Bernardus, his mother is named as Hannah Bennet.  The will of her brother, John B. Bennet, includes a bequest to Hannah, wife of William B. Fosdick, who was his neice, Nauche, daughter of Nauche and Hendrick Hendrickson.

I am including here the family of Garret Nostrand and Sally Bennet.  Stoutenburgh (pg. 380) lists them as two different families (the parentage of Sally Bennet and her husband, Garret, being unknown), but it is possible that the two Garrets are the same man while Elizabeth and Sally (undocumented) Bennet are sisters.  The records regarding their son Aury Nostrand are confusing.  One version of the baptismal records lists Sally Bennet as the mother, but the baptism is recorded three years after the event, see Rev. Dr. Schoonmaker's book of marriages and baptisms, 1800-1847, online at

Nostrand and Elizabeth Bennet, born almost exactly 1 year earlier than Amy.  If Sarah and Elizabeth are sisters, Sarah died before her father, Aury, wrote his will on 24 Jan 1824.

SARAH BENNET was born circa 1801 in NY.  She married GARRET NOSTRAND 05 Aug 1819 in Jamaica, NY.

i. supp. AURY NOSTRAND, b. 11 Jun 1823, near Jamaica, NY; d. 12 Feb 1896 at Brooklyn, NY; m. ELIZA J. COOPER.  He is listed in the 1850 census of NYC, NY as Aaron Nostrand, with wife Elsje and daughter Margaret.  Their son, Garret, was born about 1851.

ii. SARAH NOSTRAND, d. 10 May 1826 in NY, named after his first wife?

iii. GARRET NOSTRAND, b. 16 Mar 1828, near Jamaica, NY; m. RUTH GRANGER.
