The Family of Abraham4, son of John Vandervoort and Magdalena
Huysman
As noted in the earlier post “The Family of John3 Vandervoort (Paul2,
Michael1) and Magdalena Huysman,” Wilson V. Ledley’s article, “The Vandervoort-Vanderford
Family”, published in the RECORD only went through the third generation.[1] In his discussion of John3 Van Der
Voort (Paul2, Michael1),[2]
he suggested that John’s son, Charel4, and his family were living with
them at the time of the census of 1731. Though
never published, his notes suggest that he believed Charel’s children[3]
included Abraham, born about 1726.
As noted in the author’s earlier post, because of the ages of the residents, only
Charel’s son, Jan5, was probably living with the family, the others being
children of John Vandervoort and Magdalena Huysman. Abraham4 was probably
one of those children, though there are no primary source records that show who
parents were. Abraham would have been named
after his maternal uncle (his mother's half-brother), Abraham Huysman,
Abraham married Margaret Caljer before 11 Mar 1750 when their son, Jan, was baptized
at the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush, NY.[4] Margaret died before 04 Aug 1750 when Abraham
married second Sarah Conselje at the Reformed Dutch Church of New York.[5] Sarah was named as the wife of Abraham Vandervoort
in the will of her father, Peter Conselje, written in Bushwick, Kings, NY on 10
Feb 1768.[6] Though the timing is tight, Sarah probably died
before 21 Dec 1768, the date of Abraham’s license to marry third Elizabeth Gibson,[7]
a widow of Kings Co., NY.
Abraham was a witness to the will of John Messerol of Bushwick, NY dated 5 Feb 1756.[8] He witnessed the will of Abraham Lequire of Bushwick,
NY dated 4 Oct 1757.[9] He paid quit rent in Bushwick on 19 Apr 1760.[10] He was a witness for the will of Teunis Woertman
of Bushwick, NY dated 16 Jan 1763.[11] He also witnessed the will of Annetje Calyer,
widow of Jacobus Calyer, late of Bushwick, on 8 Aug 1766.[12] He was noted as superannuated in a list of loyalists
and “doubtful” men[13]
of about August 1777, so he was born before 1732.
There is some support for Abraham’s placement in this family based on the naming
of his children. Abraham and Margaret’s children
included:
1) probably
Jacob5, born about 1748. Margaret’s
parents are unknown, so he could be named after his paternal uncle, Jacob Vandervoort,
or his unknown maternal grandfather.
2) Jan, baptized
11 Mar 1749/50,[14]
named after his paternal grandfather.
Abraham and Sarah’s children included:
3) Peter,
baptized 25 Mar 1753,[15]
named after his maternal grandfather, Peter Conselje.[16]
4) Francis,[17]
born about 1758, named after his paternal uncle-in-law, Francis Titus.[18]
The family of Jacob5 Vandervoort
Abraham’s son, Jacob5, was of Kings Co., NY, when he married Margaret
Bennet with license dated 8 Jun 1773.[19] It is unknown if they had children and the family
is not found in the 1790 or 1800 Federal census, so Jacob5 probably died
by 1790. However, one probable child is Jacob6,
based on a process of elimination. He appears
first in the 1810 census of Bushwick, aged 16 – 26. Others were living in the household, who probably
include his wife and possibly siblings of his or his wife’s, so he was probably
married by 1810.
Jacob6 married Maria Vandervoort, daughter of John Vandervoort.[20] Unfortunately, Jacob6 also apparently
died young as he does not appear in any later census. His widow, Maria, married second Henry Noyes by
1830 where the family appears in the 1830 census of Bushwick,[21] however, without any children. Henry was not found in later census records. Henry and Mary were divorced by 13 July 1845.[22] They were probably divorced before 1 Apr 1835 when Mary Vandervoort,
Maria Vandervoort Noyse’s mother, mortgaged land in trust for Maria Noyse’ children,
Jacob7 Vandervoort and Mary Ann7 McGuire.[23]
Jacob7 Vandervoort married a woman named Jane before 1 Apr 1835 where
she is mentioned in the deed referenced earlier. Jane is also mentioned in a deed on 20 Jan 1837.[24] Jane probably died by 25 Sep 1852 when she is not mentioned in a deed,[25] by Jacob Vandervoort, now of Brooklyn, for land in
Bushwick where he previously lived. Though
uncertain, this Jacob is probably the one who appears in the 1850- 1870 censuses
of Brooklyn, NY.[26] He married a woman named Mary from Scotland by 1850 and given the names
of some of their children: Bridget, Theresa and Michael, it would seem that Jane
had died by about 1840 and that Mary was the mother of most, if not all, the children
in that census. Mary appears to have died
by 1852 when she also is not mentioned in the deed referenced above. From the 1855 census of Brooklyn, Jacob appears
to have married another woman named Mary about 1852, much younger than his previous
wife, and this time from Ireland. Jacob died
on 18 May 1870 in Brooklyn, NY where his will was proved.[27] In it he mentions his wife, unnamed, and his children by “said” wife,
Mary Ann, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine.
He also mentions his sons: Michael, Jacob and Thomas, and his daughters:
Maria Walters (wife of George) and Theresa Vandervoort. He also mentions his daughter, Bridget, buried
in the Lutheran cemetery. Though not specified,
the second group of sons and daughters appear to be children of his first wife. The census records for Brooklyn for 1850 - 1870
for the family are confusing. Jacob is listed
once as John, once as being born in Ireland, and born sometime between 1800 and
1810. His wife, Mary, listed once as Theresa
(probably a mistake for the daughter), was born in Ireland or New York, sometime
between 1812 and 1834. Their children are
all listed in these census records, but their ages vary widely. None of his children have been traced further.
Mary Ann7 Vandervoort married John McGuire[28]
on 14 Oct 1832 at Bushwick, NY. They had
six children, including:
1) Mary,
born 15 Dec 1833, Bushwick, NY;
2) Thomas,
born 06 Apr 1835, Bushwick, NY;
3) John,
born 29 Apr 1837, Bushwick, NY;
4) Rebecca,
born circa 1840, Williamsburg, NY;
5) Sarah,
born circa 1845, Williamsburg, NY; and
6) Martha,
born circa 1847, Williamsburg, NY
Mary Voorhees, age 70, was living with her son-in-law, John Maguire,
in Williamsburg, NY in 1850.[29]
The family of Jan5 Vandervoort
Abraham’s son, Jan5, married Mary Wiltse on 06 Dec 1781 in NY. On 18 Aug 1795, both John Vandervoort and Francis
Vandervoort [his cousin] sign as Freeholders of Bushwick for the sale of property
in Bushwick. On 24 Dec 1816 John Vandervoort
and Maria his wife of Bushwick sold land in Bushwick to Praw Devoe.[30] The will[31] of John Vandervoort of Bushwick, NY was dated 29
Mar 1819. It mentions wife, Maria, son Abraham,
son John, daughter, Maria & her children.
The executors were William Conselyea and Gabriel Debevoise and his wife,
Maria. He died before the will was proved
7 March 1825.
On 29 Jan 1835 Mary Vandervoort, widow [of Jan5], of Bushwick, John6
Vandervoort [son of Mary] and Margaret his wife of Bushwick of the first part and
Morgan Smith of the second part sell land in Bushwick willed to John by his father. It was witnessed by John Vandervoort, Jr [son
of John6 and Margaret] and Malvina his wife, Jane Vandervoort and William
Henry and Margaret [daughter of John6 and Margaret] his wife.[32] Mary died on 14 Jan 1839.
The family of Francis5 Vandervoort
The parentage of Francis5 has been lost by some of his descendants. Family histories[33]
state that Francis was left by his father, name unknown, with the family of Fulkert
Fulkertson and Marytje Van Deusen, prosperous farmers in Bushwick. His father was never seen again, and Francis was
basically adopted by the Fulkertsons. However,
an obituary of Francis’ son, Abraham6, states “The deceased was a lineal
descendant of the original Vandervoorts who settled Bushwick.” Given the history of Abraham4 Vandervoort
outlined above, Abraham6 was almost certainly his grandson.
Francis5 married Ida Van Deursen, daughter of Peter Van Deursen and Maria
Hildreth, baptized on 24 May 1758.[34] Her name is given in the baptismal records of
two of their children: Mary on 17 Nov 1795, and Abraham on 7/9/1798.[35] Francis died on 20 Dec 1831 as stated in an affidavit[36]
which also mentions his wife, Ida, children Francis, Abraham, Lucretia, Mary, and
grandchildren (of Fulkert) Ida, Elizabeth, Lucretia, Cornelia.
Mary Van Deursen, widow of Folkert Folkertson of Bushwick mentioned earlier, left
a will as Mary Collins[37]
(widow of William Collins[38])
dated 17 May 1786, leaving to her sister, Ida Van Deursen, and Francis Vandervoort
the proceeds of the sale of her farm and other items to “share and share alike”. Other things were bequeathed specifically to Ida,
while property that had belonged to her first husband, Folkert Folkertson, were
given to Francis. Given the wording, it is
likely Francis Vandervoort and Ida Van Deursen were engaged at the time, but not
yet married.
