The Vandewater Family in the Netherlands
The goal of this article is to bring together the work of several researchers, including Rosalie Fellows Bailey[1] on the family of the immigrant Hendrick4 Vandewater (Jan3, Hendrick2, Abraham1) in the Netherlands, the work of Frans C.M. Gouvermeur[2]on the Van Brug family and both branches of the Van De Water family in the Netherlands, and discuss a third Vandewater family in New York before 1700. The work of Wilson Ledley[3] on the Vandewater families in New York, and subsequent research will be taken up in a later post.
Rosalie Bailey demonstrated that there were two Vandewater families, not closely related, that were early immigrants to New Netherlands. For discussion purposes they will be called by the immigrant’s name, Hendrick Vandewater, husband of Annetje Van Brug, and Benjamin Vandewater, husband of Elizabeth Meersman. Bailey’s excellent article detailed the family of Hendrick Vandewater in the Netherlands. Frans Gouvermeur’s outstanding article focused on the Van Brug family in the Netherlands, but also uncovered two additional children of Hendrick Vandewater,[4] by his first wife, Annetje Van Brug:
1) Abraham, baptized at Haarlem on 20 Feb 1598/99, no further trace;
and by his second wife, Sarah Maes:
2) Pieterneeleke, baptized at Haarlem on 13 May 1607, no further trace.
Bailey listed three children of Isaac3 Van De Water (Hendrick2, Abraham1) and Maria Hasecamps, but noted there was another Isaac having children baptized at the time in Amsterdam, so was reluctant to add others as his children. However, that Isaac’s wife was named Neeltje, not Maria, and based on the witnesses, these are probably his children as well:
1) Geertruyt; baptized 18 Sep 1644 at Amsterdam, parents Isaac Van De Water & Maria
Van De Water, witnesses Gillis Verbrugge [paternal great uncle], Geertuyt ?[5]
2) Isaac; baptized 16 Dec 1646 at Amsterdam; parents: Isaac Van De Water & Maria Van
De Water; witnesses: Jacobus Van De Water [paternal uncle], Amelia Veryhoff?[6]
3) Sarah; baptized 13 Dec 1648 at Amsterdam; parents: Isaac Van De Water & Maria Van
De Water; witnesses: Adrians Hermans, Judich Gosen? [paternal aunt, wife of Jacob][7]
4) Hendricus Gerardus; baptized 2 Jan 1652 at Amsterdam; parents: Isaac Van De Water &
Maria Van De Water; witnesses: ? Massa [possibly related to Susanna Massa of
Catherine’s will][8]
5) Amelia; baptized 16 Jun 1656 at Amsterdam; parents: Isaac Van De Water & Maria Van
De Water; witnesses: Susanna Sla?.[9] Amelia was an uncommon name in Amsterdam
at the time; the child was likely named after the witness for Isaac, whose relationship is
unknown.
Of the children of Isaac3, Anneke4, baptized on 17 Mar 1641, died young and was buried on 17 Mar 1644.[10] Marike4 married Philip De Gols, intentions on 16 Feb 1661/62 at Amsterdam.[11] At the baptism of their first child, Maria5, on 12 Aug 1663 at Amsterdam, the witnesses were Isaac van de Water and Maria Hasecamps.[12]
Bailey noted another closely related Vandewater family whose connection was unclear, known from the will of Catharijna Vandewater made at Haarlem on 31 Jan 1631 while living in Amsterdam.[13] Her age was given as 31, though Bailey qualified it (sic), so it appears to have been questionable. A curiously similar will by a Catharina Vandewater was registered in Amsterdam on 11 Oct 1658, some 27 years later.[14] Comparing those mentioned here to the earlier will:
1. Catharina Van Dewater, married (as Cathalina) Lourens Momma with intentions dated 4
Mar 1645 at Amsterdam, from Haarlem, aged 40 years [so born about 1605],[15]
possibly the same as Catharijna Jans Van de Water, both unmarried in 1631.
2. Jannetje van de Water, married Christoffel Smit with intentions dated 13 Apr 1641 at
Amsterdam, from Haarlem, aged 28, possibly the same as Janneke Jansdr
Vandewater[16], both unmarried in 1631.
3. Maeijken Jans, possibly the same as Maeijken, sister of Catharijna Jans Van de Water,
both unmarried in 1631.
4. Jacob Van de Water, possibly the same as her great nephew, Jacob Van de Water.
5. She gave 1,000 guilders to the deacons of the Durch Reformed Church, very similar to
the total of 1,000 guilders given in the earlier will to the church (600), an orphanage
(200) and an old men’s home (200).
6. Not mentioned in the later will were her nephew, Hendrick Abrahamsz Van de Water
(possibly deceased), his son, Isaac Van de Water (still living), and Susannah Massa.
7. Mentioned in the later will, but not the earlier one, were Lambert Jansz van de Water
[brother of Catherine?], Marritje Lamberts (his daughter)[17], Jan Lambertsz, and
Claertje Jans, sister of Maeijken.
Bailey mentions that the word she translated as nephew, could be also be cousin. If changed, that would imply Catherine was the daughter of a Jan Van De Water, an undocumented brother of Abraham Van De Water. If these wills pertain to the same Catherine, it does not necessarily clarify that issue, but as proposed by Bailey, it is hoped that further research will clarify these relationships.
Gouvermeur mentioned the two marriages of Jacob Claes van de Water at Haarlem:[18]
1. Jacob Claes van de Water, young man from Haarlem, and Eseken Jans Snellaerts,
young daughter from Haarlem, intentions 23 Jun 1615.
2. Jacob Claes van de Water, widower from Haarlem, and Neeltje Jans Snellaerts, young
daughter from Gorcum, intentions 6 Sep 1616.
He did not attribute the second marriage to the parents of Benjamin Van De Water of the other Van De Water family, but Bailey suggested it,[19] and other records show this to be true.
Gouvermeur details the family of Seth Gilliszen Van Brug and Kathalijntjje Vermander,[20] noting that she was the daughter of Jan Vermander and Anneke Claes. On 5 Dec 1643 Katherine Vermander (wife of Seth Verbrugge) and Benjamin Vandewater requested authorization from the States of Brabant, Netherlands, to be allowed to sell land they inherited from their great uncle, Gerrit Jacobssen.[21] Katherine’s mother was stated to be Annetie Claas van de Water. In the marriage intentions of Benjamin Jacobs van de Water to Elizabeth Pieters de Meersman, he was age 20, from Rotterdam, and assisted by his mother, Neeltje Jans van Dijellescburge?.[22] Though not proven, it seems clear that Benjamin is the son of Jacob Claes van de Water (and Neeltje Jans), son of a Claes van de Water, and that Katherine was the daughter of Anneke Claes, daughter of that same Claes van de Water. Assuming Katherine and Benjamin were inheriting from a blood relative, Claes’ wife was likely a Jacobsz The locations given: 's Gravenhagen. Velthoven (Veldhoven), and in the Meijereije van s' Hartogenbos (Meierij van 's-Hertogenbosch) may give hints of where the family of Claes van de Water was from. Of interest is that Bailey notes that the family of Hendrick van de Water lived at Eindhoven, which borders Veldhoven. Katherine and Benjamin may be the only grandchildren of Claes Van De Water as they are the only ones named in the document and no other records have been found indicating either had siblings or cousins.
Gouvermeur listed a Jacob van de Water as the husband Sarah Van Brug, daughter of Jan Gilliszen van Brug, but upon further research he later dropped that identification of her husband.[23]
Wilson Ledley described the first five generations of the Van De Water family in New York. They will be discussed in a separate post.

Abraham Vandewater of Dordrecht, Rotterdam and NYC
Ledley listed an Abraham Vandewater in the section of “Unidentified Vandewaters,” not knowing if he had a connection to the two Vandewater families in New Netherland.[24] Abraham’ wife is named as Catherine Van Leeuwen in the membership records of the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City on 28 Feb 1700.[25] His is probably the Abraham van de Water, j.m. of Dordrecht who married Catherine Van Leeuwen with intentions dated 30 Oct 1660 at Rotterdam.[26]
He is a descendant of Hans Vandewater, named in his wife’s statement:
Document: Attestation or Statement, on 26-apr-1633, page 531
Notary: Arnout Wagensvelt, at Rotterdam
Tanneken van den Noorden, widow of Hans van de Water,[27] aged 81, declares at the request of Andries de Schutter, living in Antwerp, that she was only married to Hans van de Water and that she has three children living, namely Joost Jans[28], Sara,[29] and Susanneken van de Water,[30] and moreover four children of Abram van de Water, who lived in Dordrecht during his life[31] and child of Pieter van de Water[32], who lived in Antwerp during his life,[33] note: this is a google translation of the abstract of this document. Abraham’s father is one of the four children of Abraham referred to here.
The family is further defined in the following wills of Susanna, daughter of Hans Vandewater and Tanneken van den Noorden:
Will dated 20-sep-1653 at Rotterdam of Susannetge van de Water widow of Franchois Willemsz revokes all previous wills and codicilles. She bequeaths and pre-legates the following people.

as the sole and universal heir she names her sister Sara van deWater widow of Govert Govertsz. [my comments]

to Maijcken van de Waterher [her] sister 1000 guilders;
to Gijsbert Huijgen van der Swiep 1000 guilders, which includes the 200 guilders that he owes her according to a bond. Moreover, from the remaining 800 guilders he will only receive the interest for the rest of his life. Still leaves 100 guilders to Michiel Couwenberch, and 25 guilders to Catalijntgen, daughter of Lijntgen Corstiaens. Furthermore, sums of money are bequeathed to Grietgen Gijsberts, to Elisabeth daughter of Cornelis Arentsz, the deacon of the Reformed Church, the children of Jacob Stamdonck, the children of Paulus Stamdonck, the children of Grietgen Stamdonck, Paulus Stamdonck in Beijerland, etc.
She names as heirs her sister Sara van de Water, Ariaentgen van de Water, Isaack Pieters van de Water, Sara Joosten van deWater, Abraham van de Water, Isaack Joosten van de Water, Sara Abrahams van de Water and Maijcken Abrahams van de Water. She appoints Abraham and Isaack van de Water as executors, administrators and guardians of the minors. [my comments]
Besides his marriage and the baptisms of his children, there are several records of him regarding Rotterdam, recorded at Dordrecht:[35]
Date: 2-Aug-1661; their joint will written at Rotterdam:
Abraham van de Water, wine merchant, and his wife Catarina van Leeuwen, living at the Leuvehaven, name each other sole heir and guardian. Any children are named co-heirs upon the death of one of the parents instead of the legitimate portion.
Date: 13-04-1675; Type of deed: statement; Registered names: Maerten van Leeuwen [relative of Abraham's wife], Abraham van de Water; Pieter van Schellebeek; Folio Number: 123; Place: Rotterdam, Registered in Dordrecht.
Date: Apr 1675, Rental Agreement between Abraham Vandewater and Abraham de Vale [his nephew-in-law].
Date: 29-08-1682 and 02-09-1682; Type of deed: deed of innuendo; Folio Number: 285-286; Creditor: Cristina Isbransdr., widow of Wijnand Rutgers; Debtor: Abraham of the Water; Place: Rotterdam, Registered in Dordrecht.
Abraham and Catherine moved to New York City by 1691 as Abraham was one of the witnesses for the baptism of Johannes, son of Johannes Oudtman and Femmetje Kock on 26 Jul 1691.[36] Johannes and Femmetje were married at Amsterdam with intentions dated 18 Nov 1678,[37] and admitted to the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City on 02 Sep 1687[38] with certificate from Amsterdam. Abraham Vandewater and Femmetje Kock were witnesses for the baptism of Abraham, son of Jan Varick and Sarah Visboom on 17 Apr 1692.[39] Jan and Sarah were married at Amsterdam with intentions dated 11 May 1680,[40] and admitted to the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City on 1 Jun 1687[41] with certificate from Rhenen, Netherlands. Though no record of Abraham was found at Amsterdam, these families seem to have known each other.
Abraham witnessed the wills of Cornelius Vander Kuyl of New York on 20 Jun 1696 and Robert Sanders of New York on 21 Sep 1702.[42] Abraham, schoolmaster, and his wife, Catherine Van Leeuwen, of NYC purchased land in NYC from Daniel De Hart on 2 Feb 1692.[43] He and his wife, Catherine, of NYC sold land on 19 Jun 1697 to Hendricus Selyns,[44] and on 10 Jan 1703 to Nicholas Bayard.[45] They are listed in the 1703 census of NYC in the Dock Ward, with no children.[46]
Though the marriage record of BENJAMIN3 VANDEWATER (JACOB2, CLAES1) says he was of Rotterdam, there does not appear to be any close relationship between Abraham’s family and that of the other two earlier Vandewater families in New Netherland.
