Mary Vanderveer Dorland, Rumors of Her Demise
Mary2 Vanderveer (Cornelius Jansen1), wife of Jan3 Dorland (Jan2, Gerrit1), born in 1682,[a] has long been thought to have died about 1713,[1] before her husband. However, she survived her husband, remarried and had several more children.
There are three records that show Jan Dorland predeceased his wife. The first is a list of the residents of Brooklyn NY in 1713.[2] The entry for Mary Vanderveer, written in Dutch, reads “d: wedúwe Jan dorlant Junr”. Translated to English it reads, “The widow of Jan Dorlant, Jr.”. Barbara Barth and others apparently have taken this to read, “Widower, Jan Dorlant, Jr.”, but there appears to be no reason to assume the entry was recorded or transcribed incorrectly. There is another entry using the same phrase, “the widow of“, in regards to Abraham Sleght. Abraham was deceased by 1713 when his wife is named as Jannetje Sleght, widow and relict of Abraham Sleght of Brooklyn in an indenture dated in 1713.[3] The second record regarding the death of Jan Dorland is an indenture dated in 1719 involving land in Brooklyn bordering land of the widow of Jan Dorland.[4] Jan Gerritse Dorland was still living in 1723[5], so this reference could not be to him. Comparing the descriptions, this land is almost certainly the land John Dorland, Jr. purchased on 20 Sep 1707. The final record is from the records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush which shows Mary Dorland paying for the use of the shroud on 12/30/1711,[6] presumably for her husband.
Assuming Jan died by 1713, the will of Jan Dorland dated in 1754[7] cannot be his, but rather the will of his son (hereafter referred to as Jan, Jr.) who had been assumed to have died unmarried.[8] Several things are required based on the will for this to be the case:
1) Jan, Jr. must have married Aeltje Van Liew;
2) he must have had a youngest sister named Ann;
3) he must have had two other sisters;
4) his mother, Mary Vanderveer, must have remarried;
5) he must have had a half-sister named Geertje; and
6) he must have had three brothers. Though not specified, they were probably half-brothers as the will divides the remainder of his estate into two equal parts, one half shared equally by his two whole sisters, the other half shared equally by “My Three Brothers and One Sister Namely Gertje” whom he had already referred to as his half-sister.
A review of the subsequent lives of Jan Dorland, Jr. and Mary Vanderveer bears these out.
Without identifying him as such, Barbara A. Barth gives us much of the information regarding Mary Vanderveer’s second husband, Abraham Lott, and their family.[9] Abraham Lott married first Geertje Dorland, daughter of Jan Gerrits Dorland and Annetje Remsen. Geertje died sometime after the baptism of her last known child, Isaac, on 27 Oct 1704[10]. Abraham supposedly married second a woman named Sarah by whom he had a son named Jacob who was baptized on 21 Jun 1716.[11] Abraham’s son, Peter, was living in Brooklyn by 23 Mar 1716,[12] probably assisting his younger step-brother, Jan Dorland Jr. (15 at the time), manage the farm which Jan's mother still owned there. Peter was a resident of Brooklyn when he married Femmetje Remsen on 13 Nov 1719[13]. Peter eventually moved to New York City where he began his family.[14] Abraham married, supposedly third, Mary Vanderveer, before 21 Sep 1718, when their son, Hendrick, was baptized.[15]
Aeltje Van Liew, wife of Jan Dorland, Jr., was baptized on 27 Oct 1704[16]. She was just a few years younger than Jan Dorland, Jr., as opposed to her being about 25 years younger than Jan Dorland, Sr., previously thought to be her husband. She probably married Jan Dorland, Jr. shortly before they served as witnesses for Aeltje’s nephew, Hendrick, on 11 Feb 1722.[17]
Jan Dorland Jr.’s youngest sister was named Ann, and he had two other whole sisters, named Mary and Catherine,[18] corresponding to those named in the will, all children of Mary Vanderveer and Jan Dorland, Sr. Abraham and Mary Lott had a daughter named Geertje,[19] named as the half-sister in Jan’s will. Abraham and Mary had two known sons, Hendrick and Rem[20], included in Abraham’s will[21], two of the three brothers mentioned in Jan’s will. Abraham and Mary may have had another son who died between the time of Jan Dorland Jr.’s will and Abraham Lott’s will. However, it is likely that Jacob, supposedly son of Sarah, was in fact the son of Mary as well, based on five things.
1) The second witness for Jacob’s baptism[22], Mary Dorland, was probably an undocumented sister of Jan Gerrits Dorland (see discussion below), thus the sister-in-law of Mary Vanderveer. The first witness was Douwe Van Ditmars, brother-in-law of Abraham Lott.
2) Jacob himself had children named Abraham and Mary[23], but no daughter named Sarah, suggesting his mother was named Mary, not Sarah.
3) Peter, son of Abraham Lott and Geertje Dorland, was already living in Brooklyn in March of 1716[24], probably with his step-brother, Jan Dorland, on the Dorland property (Abraham had no other known connections to Brooklyn at the time) when Abraham’s son, Jacob, was baptized in June of 1716, suggesting a pre-existing relationship between the Lott and Vanderveer / Dorland families.
4) There is only just over two years between the baptisms of Jacob and Hendrick, a relatively short time for Sarah to have died, Abraham to have re-married and Mary to have had her child by Abraham baptized (note there were 12 years between the baptisms of Isaac and Jacob). On the other hand, two years is about the typical space between children for women at that time.
5) Jacob was probably named after Mary’s sister, Jacoba,[25] just as Abraham and Mary’s son, Hendrick, was probably named after Mary’s sister, Hendrickje.[26]
The baptismal records of the children of Abraham and Mary show an on-going relationship with the Dorland family. As noted above, Mary Dorland, probably her sister-in-law, was a witness for Jacob. Their last child, Rem, was probably named after Rem Dorland, Mary’s brother-in-law. The witnesses at Rem’s baptism were Christian Lupardus, Rem Dorland’s son-in-law, and either Mary’s daughter, Annetje Dorland (by her first husband, Jan Dorland), or Rem’s mother, Annetje Snedeker Dorland, or possibly Rem’s daughter, Annetje Dorland, wife of Christian Lupardus.[27]
Another indication of Mary’s maiden name as Vanderveer is a power of attorney witnessed by an Abraham Lott in 1732[28] for Mary’s nephews and nieces, children of her brother, Jan Vanderveer. Mary’s daughter, Mary, had grown up with that family[29]. There was another Abraham Lott living in Flatbush at this time, but it is unlikely he was the witness. This Vanderveer family was of Brooklyn, but had since disbursed to other parts in Kings County and Monmouth County , NJ . Unlike today when a witness can rely on some form of identification, witnesses then needed to be able to affirm that they personally knew the person who signed was who they said they were. As their maternal uncle-in-law, this Abraham Lott was in a much better position to be the witness in this case.
Though their relationship is not stated in his will, two of the executors of John's will, Leffert Lefferts and Isaac Lott, were probably close relatives. Though John lived in Somerset, NJ, they were both of Long Island, NY. Leffert Lefferts was the husband of John's sister, Catherine, while Isaac Lott was the son of John's step-father, Abraham Lott.
This understanding of the family has other implications. Jan Gerrits Dorland was presumed to have had a previous marriage and a daughter named Geertje by that marriage.[30] Both are no longer supported by any evidence. Jan Gerrits Dorland was thought to have had a youngest daughter named Annetje, but the will was the only certain reference to her. Other instances of her name in church records can be attributed to Annetje Snedeker, wife of Rem Jans Dorland, who was usually more closely related to the individuals in the baptismal records anyway.
A sidelight is the probable identification of Mary, wife of Gerrit3 Dorland (Lambert2, Jan1), as an undocumented daughter of Jan3 Dorland (Gerrit2, Jan1) and Annetje Remsen, as referred to above. This identification is based on her name given as Mary Dorland in the baptism of her daughter, Harmtje, the witnesses at baptisms of her children and the baptisms for whom she served as a witness, and the naming of their children.
1) Baptismal records of the Reformed Dutch Churches typically used women's maiden names, rather than their married names. At times the married name was used, but typically it was consistently one way or the other over a period of time, possibly depending on whom made the record. The baptismal records at Brooklyn in 1695, when Mary's first daughter, Harmtje, was baptized, consistently used the mother's maiden name, in this case, Dorland.[33]
2) Naming of their children[31] after immediate family members:[32]
Harmtje, after her paternal grandmother, Hermina Pieters
Harmtje, after her paternal grandmother, Hermina Pieters
Jannetje, after her maternal aunt, Jannetje Dorland
Jan, after his maternal grandfather, Jan Dorland
Annetje, after her maternal grandmother, Annetje Remsen
Lambert, after his paternal grandfather, Lambert Dorland
Gerrit, after his father
Abraham, after his maternal uncle, Abraham Dorland
Lena, after her paternal aunt, Magdalena Dorland
Jan, after his maternal grandfather, Jan Dorland
Annetje, after her maternal grandmother, Annetje Remsen
Lambert, after his paternal grandfather, Lambert Dorland
Gerrit, after his father
Abraham, after his maternal uncle, Abraham Dorland
Lena, after her paternal aunt, Magdalena Dorland
3) The probable identity of various baptismal witnesses:
a) For Harmtje:[33] Bennetje Dorland, paternal aunt; Rem Dorland, maternal uncle. As a paternal relative he would have been a second cousin once removed at best, a distant, unproven relationship, especially for their eldest child.
b) For Annetje:[34] Lena , paternal aunt; Jan Dorland, probably the maternal grandfather. The child Annetje was named after Jan’s wife, her maternal grandmother, Annetje Remsen.
c) For Lena: [35] Harmtje Dorland, paternal grandmother; Rijk Hendrickse, maternal uncle, husband of Jannetje Dorland, maternal aunt. Ryck Hendricks was also a witness for his wife’s niece, Geertje, daughter of Rem Dorland and Annetje Snedeker[36], and a witness with his wife for her niece Jannetje, daughter of Jacob Ryersen and Styntje Dorland.[37]
d) For Jacob Lott,[38] son of Abraham and Sarah Lott, 2 May 1716 at DRC of Jamaica: Douwe Van Ditmarse, paternal uncle, husband of Catherine Lott; maternal aunt; Mary Dorland, sister of Abraham's first wife, Geertje Jans Dorland and Mary Vanderveer’s sister-in-law.
e) For Rem Lott,[39] as noted above, Christian Lupardus, Mary’s sister-in-law’s husband; and Annetje Dorland, either Mary’s daughter, Annetje, her mother-in-law, Annetje Snedeker, or her sister-in-law, Annetje Dorland.
Notice in the baptisms with more than one witness, one is from the father’s side and one from the mother’s side.

[27] Kenneth Stryker-Rodda, “Records of the First Reformed Dutch Church of Jamaica , Long Island ”, RECORD. In the baptismal records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Jamaica , except for the first couple of years, married women were almost always recorded with their married name when they appeared with their husband. Even when married women were recorded without their husbands, their married name was usually used, making the first two options the more likely ones.
