Descendants of Peter Staats and Lummetje Veghte

This post is a significant expansion of the earlier post, “The Staats Families of the Princeton, NJ Area.”  It examines the descendants of Peter Staats and his wife, Lummetje Veghte, with a focus on their son, Hendrick.  The descendants of their son John4 were well covered by Lewis D. Cook in “The Family of John Staats of Hillsborough Twp., Somerset County, New Jersey,”1 so any significant changes to that information will be noted.  Facts about John’s grandson, John R6, son of Reynier5, have been added, as well as other details.


As there appears to still be some unclarity on Peter’s father, either Peter3 (Peter Jansen2, Jan1) Staats, or Jan Jansen2 (Jan1) Staats),2 some additional information is included here regarding him.  A convincing argument was made by Margery Huston Freas3 that Peter3 (Peter Jansen2, Jan1) Staats could not have been the father of the Peter who married Lummetje.  However, she did not know that Jan Jansen2 (Jan1) Staats’ son Peter was documented, mentioned in a deed executed by Peter Jansen2 (Jan1) Staats on 30 Nov 1710 as being the eldest son and heir of his deceased brother, Jan Jansen Staats.4  Marriage banns were registered for Peter Staats, young man, i.e., not previously married, and Lummetje Vegte on 29 Aug 1712, both born and living in Brooklyn (the family of Peter3 (Peter Jansen2, Jan1) Staats was living in Staten island about 1706 and there is no indication they returned to Brooklyn).5 Though no baptismal record for him has been found, a birth year of about 1690 is consistent with a marriage at age 22.  Their son, Peter4, was baptized on 21 May 1721.6 Paulus Vander Voort and Neeltje, his wife, were the witnesses, Neeltje being the child’s paternal aunt.7  The family is listed in the 1731 census of Brooklyn, NY with 4 males over 10, 3 females over 10, and 3 females under 10.8  Though the birth order of their children is uncertain, it appears that their eldest children, John, Hendrick, Gerritje, and Annetje, were all named after their paternal and maternal grandparents, while Peter was named after his father, following the normal Dutch naming patterns. The 1731 census suggest there were two other daughters whose names are unknown, but see below.


Gesie3 Staats (Peter2, Jan1) was not the child baptized 18 Dec 1661 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn.9  The child’s name was Elsje, the daughter Cook assumed was born in 165_.  Gesie4 Staats (Peter3, Peter2, Jan1) was the Grace Staats listed in the 1706 census of Staten Island.  She was the daughter of Peter Staats and Elizabeth Aertsen, married Jacob Strickler, and they were the baptismal witnesses for her nephew, Johannes, son of Jan Lues and Sue Staets, on 6 Sep 1741, and her nephew, Daniel, son of Abraham States and Elizabeth Sheldon, on 30 Jun 1745.10


Elsje3 Staats (Peter2, Jan1) (as Elsje Pieters) married Sander Egberts on 02 Apr 1682 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush, NY.11  They were the parents of at least two children: Annetje, bap. 27 May 1683, with the maternal grandmother serving as a witness;12 and Harmpje, bap. Jun 1693,13 named after her paternal grandmother.


The parents of Magdalena, wife of Cornelius Wyckoff, were Jacob Duryea and Catherine Polhemus, not Joost Duryea and Magdalena Verschuer.14  The will Lewis cites is for Jacob Duryee, husband of Catherine Polhemus.  According to a bible record at the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, Magdalena was born in 1717 and died in 1803.15


Cook was somewhat tenuous about Hendrick, husband of Machteltie Van Duyn, being the son of Peter Staats and Lummetje Veghte.  However, he did not note that they were the baptismal sponsors for Hendrick’s eldest son, Peter, in 1739,16 who was named after his paternal grandfather.  Their second son, Cornelius, was named after his maternal grandfather, and Hendrick’s brother, John, and his wife, Femmetje Brokaw, served as the baptismal witnessesin 1745.17


Peter and Lummetje may have had a son named Reynier who died young or was born after the 1731 census, named after his maternal uncle Reynier Veghte, as they had two grandsons named Reynier: Reynier, son of John Staats and Femmetje Brokaw, baptized 04 Apr 1747;18 and Reynier, son of Hendrick Staats and Macheltje Van Duyn, see below.

Generation No. 1


1.  PETER3 STAATS (JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1), son of Jan Jansen Staats and Annetje Pieters Praa, was born circa 1690 in NY, and died aft. 1738.  He married LUMMETJE VEGHTE 29 Aug 1712 (banns) in the Reformed Dutch Church (RDC) of Flatbush, Kings Co., NY, daughter of HENDRICK VEGHTE and GERRITJE WIZZELPENNING.  She was bap. 23 Apr 1693 at Brooklyn, NY.


Peter was of Brooklyn, NY when he purchased land on 11 Sep 1738 from Cornelia Beekman Van Dam (GMNJ 33:26).


One of the daughters appears to be Margaret Staats who married Thomas Ring by license dated 5 Aug 1741, both of Somerset Co., NJ.19


The other daughter may be Jannetje who married Jacob Buys (bap. 8 May 1723),20 nephew of the Jacob Buys who owned land bordering Hendrick Staats).21  They had children named after their paternal grandparents and after their presumed maternal grandparents, and then after themselves, following the normal Dutch naming conventions.


Richard Cook suggested they may have had a daughter, Mary Margaret Staat, who married Johann Adam Schmidt and had a daughter, Catherine, baptized at Staten Island, but the family had no known connections to Staten Island and have not been able to confirm her parentage.22

vii. DAUGHTER STAATS, b. circa 1729, NY.  She may be Jannetje (maiden name unknown), wife of Jacob Buys, son of Joris Buys and Seytje Smock.  They had children named after the paternal grandparents, their presumed maternal grandparents, and themselves.


Generation No. 2


2.  JOHN4 STAATS (PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born circa 1713 in NY, and died bef. 27 Dec 1781 in Hillsborough, Somerset, NJ.  He married (1) FEMMETJE BROKAW, daughter of JOHN BROKAW and SARAH VAN MIDDLESWART.  She was bap. 03 Aug 1707 at Raritan, NJ, and died bet. 1756 - 1762.  He married (2) MAGDALENA DURYEA bet. 1756 - 1757, daughter of JACOB DURYEA and CATHERINE POLHEMUS.  She was born circa 1716 in NY, and died 09 Jan 1803.


Jan and Femmetje were witnesses for the baptism of Cornelius, son of Hendrick Staats.23  Hendrick Vroom [Jan’s brother-in-law] and Maria Brokaw [Femmetje’s sister] were witnesses for the baptism of their son Reynier.24

Jan and Femmetje were witnesses for the baptism of Femmetje, daughter of Benjamin Taylor and Mary Brokaw [Femmetje’s sister and her husband].25  John’s will, dated 11 Oct 1781, names his wife, Lenah, sons Peter, John, Reynier, and Abraham, daughters Sarah and Lemmetye.26


The family of Magdalena’s first family is covered in Bible Record #4484, Cornelius Wycoff (died 1756) and wife, Magdelena Duryee (1717-1803), housed at the New Jersey Genealogical Society.27  She is mentioned as the wife of Jan Staats in a list of members of the RDC of Harlingen, NJ on 1 May 1763.28

3.  HENDRICK4 STAATS (PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born circa 1715 in NY, and died prob. aft. 1788.  He married MACHELTJE VAN DUYN, daughter of CORNELIUS VAN DUYN and CHRISTINA VAN RIPER.29  She was born circa 1716 in NY.


He was of Somerset Co., NJ on 29 Apr 1740 when his father deeded him land in Somerset Co., NJ.  This appears to be all of the 305 acres his father bought of Cornelia Van Dam.30  He was a freeholder in the East Prising [Precinct] of Somerset Co., NJ in 1753.31  On 7 Dec 1756 Hendrick Staats contributed to a subscription by the Lutheran Congregation for the building a church near Bedminstertown, half of the sermons to be preached in English, the other half in High Dutch.32  He and his wife Magtel were of Somerset Co., NJ on 5 Apr 1769 when they deeded 272 1/2 acres of land near Bound Brook bordering Jacob Buys to John Staats of Sowerland, Somerset, NJ.33  Hendrick mortgaged 90 acres of the land to John Staats in December of 1768.34  He probably moved to Bridgewater, NJ, where he is probably the one listed in the 1779, 1784, 1786, and 1788 Bridgewater Tax Ratables.35  He may have had a daughter named Christina named after her maternal grandmother as Peter and his presumed son, John, had daughters named Tiney (Christina).


MACHELTJE VAN DUYN is listed in the members of the RDC of Harlingen, NJ on 18 Apr 1746.36

4.  GERRITJE4 STAATS (PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born circa 1717 in NY.  She married HENDRICK VROOM, JR., son of HENDRICK VROOM and JANNETJE BERGEN.  He was born circa 1712, and died bef. 14 Oct 1773 in Piscataway, Middlesex, NJ.


Hendrick’s will written 13 Sep 1773 mentions his wife, Charity, sons, Peter, John and George, daughters Janitie, Lemmetie, Catherine, Sintie.  Son Hendrick to be supported.  Executors, son Peter and friends Jacob Boice [Buys] and John Duyckinck.  Proved 14 Oct, 1773.  Lib L, pg. 56.37


He (Hendrick Sr.) was on a subscription list for the church at Raritan in 1743 with his sons Joris/George, Jan/John and Hendrick, Jr.

Page 113.--In the name of God, Amen, October 4, 1760. I, PETER STAATS, of Brookland, in Kings County, farmer, being sick. I leave to my wife Rebecca the use of all estate during her widowhood; but if she marries, she is to have £200. I also leave her a negro wench and my silver teapot and household furniture. After her death, or marriage, I leave all to my two sons Peter and John. Except that my eldest son, Peter, shall have £5 before any division. I make my wife and my brother, John Staats, and my cousin, John Cowenhoven, executors.

Since this will notes that Peter is his eldest son, this could not be the will of his father, Peter3, since Peter4, was his youngest son.  He was not Peter4 (bap. 1714), Peter3, Peter Jansen2 (Jan1) Staats who died before 23 Nov 1781 when his will, written at Bensalem, Bucks Co., PA, was proved.

JOHN STAATS, b. circa 1748, NY.  He is probably the John Staats of Gowanus, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY who wrote his will on July 9, 1785, not mentioning any descendants.40  He leaves his “friend, Johannes Ditmars” part of his estate and makes him one of his executors.  I assume Johannes is his step-father, see John’s brother, Peter.

7.  PETER5 STAATS (JOHN4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born 06 Jul 1738 in NJ, and died bef. 03 Sep 1825 in Hillsborough, Somerset, NJ.  He married SUSANNAH VAN MIDDLESWART, daughter of HENDRICK VAN MIDDLESWART and NEELTJE TEN EYCK.  She was bap. 05 May 1745 at Readington, NJ, and died 07 May 1826 in Hillsborough, NJ.

Jan State & Lente, his wife, were witnesses for the baptism of their daughter Femmetje/Phebe


Sarah is not mentioned in his will.42

9.  ABRAHAM5 STAATS (JOHN4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born 23 May 1743 at Harlingen, NJ, and died bef. 10 May 1821 in Franklin, Somerset, NJ.  He married MARGARET DUBOIS 08 Nov 1770 in NJ, daughter of ABRAHAM DUBOIS and JANNETJE VAN DYCK.  She was bap. 16 Apr 1749 at Harlingen, NJ, and died 22 Apr 1822 in Franklin, Somerset, NJ.


Abraham’s will mentions his wife, Margaret, son, Isaac, and 5 daughters, but only names Sarah, wife of William Bayles, Margaret Staats, Phebe Staats, Mary Staats.  Jane is the other daughter, as mentioned in her will.44  See the family Bible record for additional information.45

10.  REYNIER5 STAATS (JOHN4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was bap. 04 Apr 1747 at Harlingen, NJ, and died 13 Feb 1826 in Somerset Co., NJ.  He married SEYTJE VAN NEST, daughter of ABRAHAM VAN NEST and SARAH BERGEN.  She was born 22 Dec 1751 at Readington, NJ, and died 28 Jan 1833 in Somerset, NJ.


Seytje supposedly died in 1833.  Magdalena is named as Margaret in his will,46 but as Magdalen at her marriage.


He and wife Syche sold 120 3/4 acres and 9 1/4 of land in Montgomery Twp, Somerset Co., NJ to his son John on 12 Oct 1803.47  He sold 1 4/10 of an acre of land in Montgomery Twp. Somerset Co., NJ, currently occupied by Abraham R. Staats, to his son, John, on 15 Dec 1814.48

11.  LUMMETJE5 STAATS (JOHN4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born circa May 1750 at Readington, NJ, and died 07 Feb 1816 in Hillsborough, NJ.  She married JORIS VAN NEST 07 May 1772, son of ABRAHAM VAN NEST and SARAH BERGEN.  He was bap. 10 Dec 1746 at Readington, NJ, and died 04 Oct 1806 in Hillsborough, NJ.


Joris died Intestate, administration given 17 Nov 1806, at Hillsborough, Somerset, NJ.49

12.  PETER5 STAATS (HENDRICK4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was bap. 18 Nov 1739 at New Utrecht, NY, and died bef. 08 Feb 1794 in Bridgewater, Somerset, NJ.  He married SYNIA UNKNOWN.50  She was born circa 1743, and died 23 Oct 1794 in Bridgewater, NJ.  He may have been an innkeeper in Bound Brook, see his brother, Cornelius, and probable brother, John, below.


On 10 Mar 1791 Peter Staats and Sinia, his wife, of Hillsborough, Somerset, NJ sold land to Timothy Brush, Jr. of Hopewell, Hunterdon, NJ, which he bought from Andrew and Sarah Teneik on 1 Jan 1786.51


His will, written at Bridgewater, NJ on 12 Oct 1793, mentions his son-in-law, Edward Howell, as one of the executors, the other was Joseph Blackford, another son-in-law though the abstract of his will doesn’t specify that.  Hendrick and Jane are noted as being underage.  He states he had 5 daughters, but only names Nancy, Tiney and Jane.  His property was to be sold after the death or remarriage of his wife, but a record of the sale has not been found.52

     ii. DAUGHTER STAATS, b. NJ, m. Edward Howell, mentioned in the will of her father as his son-in-law, no further trace.  He may have been the Edward Howell who died before April 1819 when the acting administrator of his estate in Somerset Co., NY, petitioned the Orphans court for permission to sell his real estate.53  No record of the sale or other probate actions were found.  

Though unlikely, her husband may be the Edward Howell of Hopewell, Hunterdon {which borders Somerset Co.], NJ whose will of 5 Apr 1835 does not mention a wife, but does mention his children, Hannah Howell and Peter Howell, and two grandchildren, Catherine and Lewis Howell.  Edward was living in Hopewell, Hunterdon, NJ in the 1830 census.  The inhabitants were probably Edward, son Peter, Peter’s wife, their son, Lewis, their daughter Catherine, his sister Hannah, and an extra male.

His son, Peter, born about 1800, married Sally Ege on 23 Jan 1819 in Hunterdon, NJ.  They were living in Amwell, Hunterdon, NJ in 1850, both age 50, no children.  They are the Peter Howell, age 60, and Sarah, age 61, and Lewis, age 30?, were living with Samuel and Catherine Lann [Larow] (both age 40, their daughter) in Hopewell, Mercer, NJ in 1860.  Peter probably died in Mercer Co., NJ on 14 Oct 1862, age 62.  Sarah Howell (age 71) was living with Samuel and Catherine Larone [Larow] (both age 50) in Hopewell, Mercer, NJ in 1870.  In the 1880 census of Ewing, Mercer, NJ she is listed as Sarah Howell, 82, grandmother, living with S.H. Phillips, 46, Sarah [Larow] Phillips, 36, [and others], and Samuel Larow, 60, father-in-law.  An Andrew Ege, age 70, was living with Samuel and Catherine [Howell] Larow in the 1850 census of Hopewell, Mercer, NJ.

His daughter, Hannah, wrote her will on 8 Feb 1843 at Pennington, Hopewell, Mercer, NJ, names her brother, Peter, his wife, Sarah, their children Catherine Howell and Lewis H. V. Howell, proved 25 Feb 1847.  Mercer Co., NJ Wills, Book A, pg. 473.

13.  CORNELIUS5 STAATS (HENDRICK4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was bap. 09 Apr 1745 at Harlingen, NJ.  He probably married Dinah Mount, daughter of Joseph Mount and Elsje Van Wicklen on 25 Jan 1774 at Christ Church, New Brunswick, NJ.


He appears to have lived primarily in Somerset Co., NJ, but has only one proven descendant.  

  1. He signed as a witness to the deed of 5 Apr 1769 of his father to John Staats in Somerset Co., NJ,54 

  2. He is probably the Cornelius Staats in the New Brunswick, NJ 1774 Tax Ratables.55  Note: he was not listed in the 1779 Tax Ratables of Bridgewater, Somerset Co., where his brother Hendrick was listed that year.

  3. He is probably listed in the Tax Ratables of Bridgewater, Somerset, NJ in 1786, 1787, 1789, 1791, 1792, and 1794.

  4. He was probably an innkeeper in Somerset, NJ in 1786-1788, 1790-1792.56  A Peter Staats was an innkeeper in 1782-1785, 1793, possibly at the same inn?

  5. He was involved in or named in several Supreme Court Cases from 1786-1792 in Somerset Co, NJ, including as a juror in 1790 in Supreme Court Case 20120 James Jackson vs Rebecca Van Dyke, along with Rynear H Staats and John H. Staats, his presumed brothers.57

  6. He may be the Cornelius Staats in the 1792 Military Census Exempts, Readington, Hunterdon, , p 160, but given his age,58 this is probably an otherwise unknown son, or nephew (grandson of Hendrick).


They had at least three children, two based on circumstantial evidence, though there may have been more:

  1. Henry:  

    1. He would have been named after his paternal grandfather.  

    2. He had two children baptized at the Lutheran Church of Oldwick, Hunterdon, NJ in 1796 and 1798.59  He later moved to Bethlehem, Hunterdon by 1802.60

    3. The descendants of his presumed brothers all settled in Somerset Co., NJ.

    4. Henry had a daughter, Dinah, named after her presumed paternal grandmother.

    5. Henry probably had a son named Cornelius after his presumed paternal grandfather.

    6. A John Staats is listed in the 1792 Military Census of Tewksbury, Hunterdon, NJ61 who, given his location, does not fit with any known John Staats, so he is another possible son of Cornelius.  Oldwick is in Tewksbury Township, but there is no further trace of him.

    7. As noted earlier, another possible son is Cornelius Staats, listed in the 1792 Military of Readington, Hunterdon, NJ who, given his location, does not fit well with any known Cornelius Staats, so is another possible son of Cornelius, but there is no further trace.

  2. Matilda:

    1. She would have been named after her paternal grandmother.

    2. After the death of her husband, Abraham Van Duyn, in 1846, she moved to Plainfield, Union (then Essex), NJ where she is listed in the 1850 census.  She later died there on 6 May 1876.62  This is where 2 of her presumed nephews, Michael and Cornelius Staats, moved by 1840.

    3. Her daughter, Cornelia, may have been named after her presumed maternal grandfather.

    4. There is a large gap between the probably birthdates of Henry and Matilda.  Given her age, Cornelius may have married twice, or she may be Cornelius’ granddaughter.

UKNOWN MILLER, d. before the 1830 census of Piscataway, NJ.  He is probably Daniel Miller of Piscataway who died before 22 Mar 1827 when the inventory of his estate was taken.  Her death record lists her birth place as Bound Brook and her parents as Cornelius and Dinah Staats.  Her mother, Dinah Staats is living with her in the 1850 census of Piscataway.  According to the 1830 census they had at least one son and one daughter, probably including Cornelius S. Miller who was the administrator of her estate.  According to his tombstone he was born 23 May 1807 at Bound Brook, Somerset, NJ.  According to his death record his parents were E. and E. Miller.

14.  REYNIER5 STAATS (HENDRICK4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born bet. 1745 - 1760 in NJ, and died bef. 20 Mar 1821 in Hillsborough, NJ.  He married SARAH COSHUN, daughter of JOSEPH COSHUN and ELIZABETH WYCKOFF.64  She was born 1759 in NJ, and died 1829 in Hillsborough, NJ.


I have not proved his parents.  This is a best placement for him:

  1. He is probably the Reynear H. Staats who was a juror in 1790 in Supreme Court Case (#20120) James Jackson vs Rebecca Van Dyke, along with John H Staats and Cornelius Staats, his presumed brothers.65

  2. His uncle John had a son named Reynier, both named after their maternal great uncle, Reynier Veghte.

  3. He had a son named Henry and probably a son named Joseph after their presumed paternal and maternal grandfathers, respectively.


Henry Herder and Jacob R. Schenck were the administrators of his estate.66  He is mentioned in his father-in-law's will as his son-in-law.67

15.  JOHN5 STAATS (HENDRICK4, PETER3, JAN JANSEN2, JAN PIETERSE1) was born circa 1751, and died bef. Oct 1827.  He married HANNAH TREMBLY 19 Apr 1776 in Somerset, NJ, daughter of PETER TREMBLY and HANNAH UNKNOWN.  She died bef. 08 Jan 1810 in Somerset, NJ.


I have not proved his parents.  This is a best placement for him:

  1. He is said to be the brother of Peter Staats, an innkeeper in Bound Brook69 (part of Bridgewater Twp.)

  2. He is probably the John H. Staats who was a juror in 1790 in Supreme Court Case 20120 James Jackson vs Rebecca Van Dyke, along with Rynear H Staats and Cornelius Staats, his presumed brothers.

  3. His uncle, John, already had a son named John.

  4. He had a son named Henry and a son named Peter, after their presumed and known paternal and maternal grandfathers, respectively.

  5. Being married in 1776, he was probably born by 1756 or earlier.

  6. He had daughters named Tiney and Nancy, as did his presumed brother, Peter.

  7. He had a son named Peter after his presumed brother. 


John Voorhees, on behalf of Peter Staats, claimed 2/8 of the lots of that descended to Nancy Staats and Susan Staats.70  This conflicts with the eventual division into seven parts, but is probably mistaken.


The heirs of Hannah Staats, daughter of Peter Trembly were: John, Jr., Hannah Van Kirk, wife of Nathan Van Kirk, heirs of Nancy Staats, dec., heirs of Susan Staats, dec., assigns of Henry Staats, dec., Christina Boudinot, assigns of Peter Staats, dec.71


John Staats was probably deceased by 1828 as I believe his wife's property would have passed to him if he was still alive then.

JAMES VOORHEES wrote a codicil to his will in 1827.  His will mentions his 3 grandchildren, Abraham, Jane & Elizabeth, by his son Hendrick Vroom Voorhees, and his son, James.  Will dated 21 Dec 1826 in Bedminster, proved 3 Jul 1830.72


His tombstone is in the Bedminster Reformed Church Cemetery, died 19 Jun 1830 in the 86th year of his age, i.e. he was 85 at the time.

His wife is not mentioned in his will.74  The married names of his daughters are included.  A Mariah, daughter of John Staats and Elizabeth Schenck, was born on 12 Jun 1812 and baptized at Hillsborough, but that couple is otherwise unknown.  I have placed her as a daughter of John Staats and Mary Veghte as this couple had a daughter named Mary Ann who married Adrian Merrill and a Mariah is not named in Hendrick’s will.

The baptismal record for Evert lists his parents as William Staats and Mariah Bergen.  I believe this is a mistake.  He was living in Hillsborough Twp., Somerset, NJ in the 1840 census with a woman aged 50 -59 who was probably his mother, Abraham having died in 1839.  Comparing the 1830 Census, he is listed near where Abraham was listed then, with a son of the right age.  He was named after his maternal uncle, Evert Bergen.  His eldest son was named Abraham.

His will mentions his wife, Mary, and son Isaac who is underage.79

I have not proved his parents or some of his children.  The parents of Michael and Dinah are known from their baptismal records.  The father of Henry is listed as Henry on his death record.  The parents of Joseph, John, Cornelius, and Phineas are based only on circumstantial evidence.

On 18 Jun 1802 Henry Stauts of Bethlehem, Hunterdon, NJ bought land in Bethlehem from Benjamin Egbert.80  On 16 Sep 1808 Henry Staats of Bethlehem, Hunterdon, NJ and Catherine, his wife, sell land in Bethlehem Township which he bought from Benjamin Egbert to Tunis Stires.81  On 10 Jun 1815 Henry Staats of Bethlehem, Hunterdon, NJ and Catherine, his wife, sell land to Tunis Stires.82  Conveyed by Matthew Martin on 9 Apr 1804.  On 1 Mar 1831 Henry Staats of Bethlehem, Hunterdon, NJ sold land in Bethlehem including the mortgaged property known as the Ark Factory formerly belonging to Thomas and James Wiggins having been sold by the Sheriff on 6 Aug 1829 to a group of people.83  On 7 Feb 1832 Land mortgaged by Henry Staats and his wife in 1816 by decree of the Court of Chancey of 26 Jan 1831 were forced to sell land in Bethlehem, Hunterdon Co., NJ.84 


I have not proved his 2nd marriage to Theodosia Opdyke.  The Op Dyck Genealogy, by Charles Wilson Opdyke said Theodosia Opdyck married 1st John Hardy, 2nd Henry Staats, both of Bethlehem, NJ.  He had moved to Bethlehem by 1802 when he bought land there. I believe his daughter Catherine was named after his first wife.  His presumed grandson may have been named after his step-grandmother, The 1830 census has 2 males of Henry's age and one female of Catherine's age, but no wife, but the forced sale in 1832 implies he had a wife in 1831, though the reference to her could just be to the original mortgage.

I have not proved her parents.  This is best placement, assuming she was named after her paternal grandmother, her daughter, Cornelia, was named after her maternal grandfather, and migration to Plainfield.

Inventory of Abraham's estate taken by Abraham Skillman and John I. Staats of Franklin, Somerset, NJ.  His land in Franklin was sold to John I. Staats to settle his estate.86  Interest on 1/3 part was to be paid to his widow, Matilda Van Duyn.  John I. Staats was her first cousin, once removed and lived in the same township.

On 19 Sep 1812, Joseph Staats and Hannah his wife of Middlesex, NJ sold land deeded by Thomas Wiggins in 1804 to the Presbyterian Church of Princeton, which they sold to Joseph Staats?88  A deed dated 7 Jul 1858 lists his heirs, including the living husbands of his daughters.  Located on the north side of the great road from Trenton to Princeton, ... middle of Stony Brook...containing 100 acres.89  On 1 Apr 1836, Joseph Staats & Elizabeth his wife of West Windsor, Middlesex, NJ sell 2 acres to Philip Augustus Stockton on the south side of the road from Princeton to Trenton.90  Given the location, the wife’s name, Elizabeth, is probably an error for Mary.

Henry is buried in the same cemetery as his presumed parents.  A John Staats, age 76, probably Henry’s father, was living with the family in 1850.  Given the birthdate of their first known child according to his tombstone, it is likely that the published marriage date of 22 Oct 182595 is incorrect.  His death certificate say he died 11 Mar 1890 at Hillsborough, Somerset, NJ, widowed, age 88.


His wife is named as Ellen Staats in the will of her father.  She is to receive an equal share with her other married sisters (whose married names are given), whereas her unmarried sister, Elizabeth, received an additional bequest.  

Her death record lists her parents as Henry and Elizabeth.

His death record lists his parents as John Staats and Maria.  Though the wife’s maiden name is given as Sarah instead of Mary, his probable marriage record is Rynear Staats and Sarah Dimas on 27 Jan 1830.  The family is listed in the 1840 Census of Montgomery, Somerset, NJ.  The 1850 Census of Montgomery Somerset NJ includes Maria Staats, age 68, paternal grandmother, and Susan Nevius Ditmars, age 83, maternal grandmother.

An Elizabeth Staats, age 15, is living with Barnet Van Vliet in Alexandria, Hunterdon, NJ in 1850.


In the 1860 Greenwich, Sussex, NJ, John appears to be deceased, Ann is not listed, Christopher is living nearby.


On 2 Apr 1866 John Henry Staats and Mary Ellen his wife, Emenuel Courson? and Anne Elizabeth his wife of Alexandria, Hunterdon, NJ and Cornelius Staats, Christopher Staats and Abraham Staats of Phillipsburg, Warren, NJ sold land to William Creveling.101

Jeremiah was of Franklin, Somerset Co., NJ on 14 Sep 1831 when he sold land to John H. Voorhees, which bordered land owned by John H. Voorhees, previously owned by John Staats, formerly of Peter Trembly.  No wife was mentioned for Jeremiah.103  He was of Franklin, Somerset, NJ on 1 May 1833 when he and his wife, Maria, recently Maria Van Duyn, sold land in Bridgewater, Somerset, NJ to George Winsor.104  He was of Franklin, Somerset Co., NJ on 13 Mar 1829 when he bought from John Staats Jr. and wife, Catherine, of the same place land John inherited from Peter Trembly.
