More on the Jansen Family of Brooklyn, NY

More on the Jansen Family of Brooklyn

In "A Johnson/ Jansen Family of Brooklyn and New York,"[1] Henry B. Hoff describes the family of Johannes Jansen Quisthout and Albertje Barents who lived in Brooklyn, NY in 1698 and later.  Not included in the discussion was an Isaac Jansen who lived in Brooklyn and begins to appear in the records there in 1713.[2]  Though his parentage has not been proven, he, or possibly his wife, is most likely one of their children.

The 1698 Census of Brooklyn, NY[3] shows 1 male over 10, 3 females over 10 and 3 children in the household.  Of their four known children at that point; Barent, John, Jannetje and Sarah.[4] , only John has been traced further.  If two of the other three died young, there may have been another undocumented child.

Albertie Janse is listed in the subscription list of 1705,[4] but not Johannes.  Neither are listed in the 1706 tax assessment list of Brooklyn,[5] so it is likely Johannes was deceased by then.  Albertje Johnson, living alone, is listed in the 1731 Census of Brooklyn, NY.[6]

Jan, son of Johannes Quisthout and Albertje Barents was baptized on 25 May 1687.[7]  Isaac would have been born about 1690, about one year after his sister, Jannetje, was baptized in 1689[8] and who is known to have died young as they had another daughter named Jannetje baptized in 1692.[9]  There are no Jansen/Johnsons listed in the 1711 Brooklyn Town Meeting roster.[10]  Isaac is the only Jansen/Johnson listed in the 1713 list of Freeholders and Inhabitants of Brooklyn, NY[11].  In the 1715 muster of Kings Co., NY, Isaac Jansen and Jan Jansen are listed.[12]  Both Isaac Jansen and Jan Jansen are mentioned in the 1724 list of Freeholders of Brooklyn, NY.[13]  Their son, Barent,[14] is not mentioned in any of the list and so presumably died young.

There are few records of Isaac’s family, but from them, his family and their travels can be reconstructed.  The most comprehensive view of his family comes from his will, written in Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ on 27 Jun 1758.[15]  In it he mentions his wife, Jannetje, and his children, presumably in birth order: Elizabeth, Johannes, Garret, Sarah, Albertje, Isaac, Jan and Jannetje.  His will was proved 24 Jul 1760.

The maiden name of Isaac’s first wife, Jannetje, is unknown.  However, they were married about 1712 as their fourth child, Sarah, was baptized 13 Dec 1719 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, NY.[16]  The witnesses were Johannes Hartenbroch and Sarah Hyer.  Johannes was the husband Annetje Jans Bosch,[17] half-sister of Jan Quisthout.[18]  Sarah Jans Bosch, wife of Gerrit Hyer,[19] was also a half-sister of sister of Jan Quisthout.[20]  These were the same witnesses as the ones for the baptism of Sarah, Isaac’s presumed sister, in 1695.[21]  Isaac Jansen and his wife, Jannetje, sold land in Brooklyn to Jacob Debevoise on 8 Nov 1722.[22]

The 1731 Census of Brooklyn, NY[23] shows three men over ten, two males under ten, three women over ten, one women under 10.  These are probably, Isaac, his wife, Jannetje, and their first four children: Elizabeth, Johannes, Garret and Sarah as the others over ten, and Albertje, Isaac and Jan as those under 10.

Isaac’s first wife, Jannetje, probably died some time before the 1731 census.  Isaac’s brother, Jan, died after his will was written on 22 Aug 1729 in Brooklyn[24] and before the 1731 census of Brooklyn when his three sons were living on their own,[25] listed next to their paternal grandmother.  The executors of Jan’s will were his wife, Jannetje, Isaac Jansen, presumably his brother, Joris Rapalje and Peter Lott, both brothers-in-law of Jan Jansen.  Isaac married his sister-in-law, Jannetje Remsen, probably before the 1731 where she is not listed as living with her three sons.  They were definitely married by 1735 when an unrecorded deed for land in Brooklyn[26] between the descendants of Joris Remsen was drawn up which mentions Isaac Jansen as the wife of Jannetje Remsen.

The family had moved to New Jersey by 1735 when Isaac Jansen is included in the records of the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick in the List of Families in the Congregation 1732-1735.[27]  Their daughter, Jannetje, was baptized there on 12 Aug 1732.[28]  He is also included in the 1735 tax list of Franklin Township, Somerset Co., NJ.[29]  The family probably lived in the area through 1743 as four of his grandchildren were baptized there as well.[30]  Isaac had twenty three other grandchildren baptized in NYC and Flatbush.  Isaac and his daughter, Jannetje, were witnesses for the baptism of one of Isaac’s granddaughter, Jannetje, in 1753.[31]

Though the parents of Isaac’s wife, Jannetje, are not known, the name Albertje was uncommon and suggests that Isaac’s oldest son, Johannes, and his daughter, Albertje, were named after their paternal grandparents.  The witnesses for the baptism of his daughter, Sarah and his appointment as one of the executors of the will of Jan Jansen also suggest he was the son of Johannes Jansen Quisthout and Albertje Barents.

It is noted that the parents of Isaac's wife, Jannetje, could be Johannes Jansen Quisthout and Albertje Barents, instead of Isaac being their son.  The same arguments for her parentage would apply as well. The main argument in favor of Isaac's parentage is his early appearance in Brooklyn and the lack of any indication, like a land deed, that he moved to Brooklyn from somewhere else,
