The Family of Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans and Related Families

The Family of Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans
and Related Families

Updated 4 Jun 2023

There were three families New Amsterdam, for discussion purposes called the Hartmans, Wessels and Hermans families, which had numerous interactions with each other in church,[1] probate[2] and land[3] records.  However, the nature of those relationships between the families has remained unclear.

The Hartmans family consists of Fytje Hartmans, wife of Michael Jansen Vreeland, and her sister, Annetje Hartmans, wife of Nicholas Jansen Backer.[4]  Fytje was born about 1626[5].  The family moved from New Amsterdam to Gemoenepaen, New Jersey about 1650.  Annetje Hartmans was born about 1614.[6]  Her family also moved from New Amsterdam to Gemoenepaen, New Jersey about 1650.

The Wessels family consisted of those listed in a Court document dated 17 Jan 1671 regarding a settlement between the Wessel siblings and Geertje Rutgers, then wife of Gerrit Huygen, widow of Herman Wessels.[7]  The parents of this family were unknown.  The siblings listed there were:

-   Jannetje, wife of Samuel Edsal

-   Warner, Junior

-   Hendrickje, wife of Gelyn Verplank

-   Herman, residing in Holland

-   Herman, dec’d

The mention of two siblings named Herman is confusing.  Some have suggested Herman Wessels, husband of Geertje Rutgers, was the father of these siblings, not another sibling.  Other solutions have been suggested.  The family was living in New Netherland by the early 1650s.[8]

The Hermans family were the children of Wessel Hermans and Metje Bonen.  The children adopted the surname Wessels, so their patronymic name will be used here to distinguish them from the other Wessels family.  The living children are all named in the will[9] of their sister, Henrica Anthony, as

-   Warner

-   Christina Coerten, widow

-   Mary Aldricks

-   Harmanus

-    Dirck

Her sister, Aeltje, married Francis Rambout[10] and had a son, Johannes,[11] but he apparently died young as Francis and his third wife, Helen, had another son named Johannes.[12]  Aeltje died without heirs and so is not mentioned in Henrica’s will.  The family members were living in New Netherlands by the early 1650s.[13]

A factor complicating the understanding of these families was the apparent mixing of the surnames in various records.  Both Fytje and Annetje Hartmans appear with the surname Wessels.[14]  Both Fytie and Annetje Hartmans appear with the surname Hermans[15] as well.

Another complicating factor is a confusion between the name Hertman/Hartmen and Herman/Harmen.  Though Hertman Wessels appears in numerous records, he has not generally been recognized as a member of either the Wessels or the Hermans family.  In fact, he is the “Herman” Wessels living in Holland mentioned in the settlement between the Wessel siblings earlier.  There was a Herman Wessels in Amsterdam at the time of the court document, but he was the son of Wessel Hermans and Metje Bonen,[16] not one of their siblings.  That Herman Wessels married Agatha Van Salen with intentions at Amsterdam, The Netherlands on 14 Jan 1673,[17] two years after the court document.

It was Hartman Wessels the court document was referring to.  He married Elizabeth Jans, widow of Alexander Pieters at Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with intentions dated 26 Feb 1667.[18]  Their first child, Johannes, was baptized at the Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam, The Netherlands on 19 Sep 1668,[19] about two years before the court document.  He returned to NY and was given permission to return to Europe on 18 Aug 1670.[20]  He appears in New York in 1672 as a witness for his nephew[21], Peter, about a year and a half after the document.  They had another daughter, Ann, born in NY, who married William Jackson[22].  She was not the daughter of Herman and Agatha as previously thought.[23]  Her brother, Johannes, was a witness for the baptism of Ann’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth,[24] as well as her mother, Elizabeth, who was a witness for the baptisms of several of her other children.  The naming of her second son, Hartmans,[25] also suggests that Hartman was Ann’s father.

Since Hartman and several of his siblings were said to be of Arnhem at their marriage, a review of the baptismal records there showed three children of Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans.

-   Hertman 3 Jul 1642[26] (mother's name: Jenneke Wessels)

-   Hendrisken, 14 Sep 1645[27]

-   Mariken 3 Apr 1650[28]

A review of the records at Amsterdam showed the marriage of Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans[29] with intentions dated 1 Jul 1634 at Amsterdam, The Netherlands and the baptism of two of their children:

-   Jenneken, 12 Aug 1638[30]

-    Warner, 30 Sep 1640[31]

Though baptismal records were not found for Herman or Christina, and Mariken appears to have died young, Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans were undoubtedly the parents of this Wessel family.

Jan Wessels apparently died shortly after the baptism of Mariken.  Annetje married Claes Jansen Backer at Arnhem, The Netherlands, with intentions dated 13 Mar 1652.[31a]   They moved to New York by 27 Oct 1652 when Sytie Hackmans, probably Feytje Hartmans, was a witness for Annetje’s son, Johannes.[32]  This illustrates the earlier comment regarding the use of the surname Wessel for Annetje, and for Fytje as her sister by mistake.  The confusion of the names Hartman and Herman for Annetje’s son also explain the use of the surname Hermans for Annetje and Fytje.

Annetje was a witness for a nephew and niece in 1654 and 1656,[33] and two of her grandchildren in 1656 and 1668.[34]  She died by 23 Jul 1670 when Nicholas Backer, widow of Annetje Hermans, married [35] Marritje Gerrits.  Thus, it appears that Annetje Hartmans Wessels was the connection between the Hartmans and Wessels families.

The connection between the family of Wessel Hermans and Metje Bonen and the family of Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartman is still uncertain.  However, it is quite likely that Wessel Hermans and Jan Wessels were brothers, Wessel using his patronymic name, Hermans, and Jan using Wessels as his surname.  The children of Wessel Hermans adopted the surname Wessels, while the children of Jan Wessels continued with Wessels as their surname.  It may be that Wessel Hermans adopted Wessels as a surname himself later in life.  Several things suggest this.

In a mortgage document Nicholas Jansen Backer, husband of Annetje Hartmans, acknowledged a debt to Herman Wessels [his stepson], surgeon, as Herman’s grandfather, also named Herman Wessels, left him a legacy which was spent on a house at Arnhem, The Netherlands.[35a]  I have not reviewed the document, but if correct, Herman’s father, Jan Wessels, was using Wessels as his surname.  Herman would be the first name of the father of Wessel Herman, husband of Metje Boonen, if he used Hermans as his patronymic name.  A Herman Wessels was buried 1 Feb 1641 at Arnhem, possibly the grandfather.[35b]

There are two records that state Metje Bonen was the widow of Wessel Wessels, one in Utrecht[36] and one in New Amsterdam[37].  Wessel Wessels may have been a second husband of Metje, but no record has been found of that marriage.  Styling Metje as the widow of Wessel Wessels makes sense in Utrecht, whether or not her husband switched to using a surname or if she remarried.  However, in regards to New Netherland, it would seem more likely that Metje would be known as the widow of Wessel Hermans, the father of her children also living in New Netherland, rather than Wessel Wessels who never lived in New Netherland and to whom she was married only briefly, unless he changed his name and Wessel Wessels and Wessel Hermans were the same person.

A Jan Wessels was the baptismal witness for Aeltje, the first daughter of Wessel Hermans and Metje Bonen, at Amsterdam on 10 Sep 1630.  Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans were married in Amsterdam a few years later.

Both men were stated to be of Arnhem and to be boat captains at their marriage, Wessel at Dordrecht, The Netherlands,[38] and Jan at Amsterdam, The Netherlands.[39]

In the court document detailing the children of Jan Wessels, Warner is designated as "Junior", not because he was the son of a Warner, but the younger of two Warner Wessels.  Given this record was defining a family, it would seem likely that "Junior" was distinguishing him from a close relative, rather than a total stranger of the same name who happened to be older.  Warner Wessels is also recorded as “de Jonge”, i.e., “the younger” in the baptismal record of his daughter, Anne. [40]

Though the relationships are not stated in the documents, there are several interactions between the children of Wessel Hermans and Jan Wessels in the church records and at least one probate record.

1.                  Anna Elzabeth Massop, wife of Warner2 Wessels (Wessel1) was a baptismal witness for Johannes Vreeland (s/o Feytje Hartmans, sister-in-law of Jan1 Wessels), and Judith3 Edsall (Jannetje2 Wessels, Jan1) and Jacobus3 Verplanck (Hendrickje2 Wessels, Jan1)[41].

2.                  Francis Rombout, husband of Anna Elzabeth Massop, widow of Warner2 Wessels (Wessel1) was a baptismal witness for Abraham3 Verplanck (Hendrickje2 Wessels, Jan1)[42].

3.                  Hendrica2 Wessels (Wessel1) was a baptismal witness for Rutje4 and Ridsert4 Edsall (Samuel3, Jannetje2, Jan Wessels1)[43].

4.                  Hendrica2 Wessels Anthony (Wessel1) appointed her nephew, Hendricus3 Coerten (Christina2 Wessels, Wessel1), but also Andreas Teller, husband of Anna3 Verplancken (Hendrickje2 Wessels, Jan1), and William Jackson, husband of Annetje3 Wessels (Hartman2 Wessels, Jan1), and Jacobus Kip, husband of (Hendrickje2 Wessels, Jan1) as the executors of her will.[44].

5.                  Maria3 Wessels (Warner2, Wessel1) was a baptismal witness Johanna4 Larenszen (Annetje3 Edsall, Jannetje2 Wessels, Jan1) and Lysbeth4 Larenszen (Annetje3 Edsall, Jannetje2 Wessels, Jan1).[45]

6.                  Jacob Teller and his wife, Christina3 Wessels (Warner2, Wessel1) were witnesses for the baptism of Samuel4 Blaeck (Judith3 Edsall, Jannetje2 Wessels, Jan1).[46]

7.                  Hendrikus3 Coerten (Christina2 Wessels, Wessel1) was a baptismal witness for Pieter4 Wessels (Pieter3, Warner2, Jan1).[47]

The family of Samuel Edsell is involved in a number of these interactions, but since he was of Berkshire, England,[48], it is very unlikely that he had any other family connections to the Wessel families except through his wife.  No other familial relationships are known between these individuals.  The number of interactions, the assortment of people involved, and the length of the apparent connection (down to the presumed great grandchildren), all suggest a close tie between the families of Wessel Hermans and Jan Wessels.

A few other records are less direct, but also suggest some connection between the family of Lodewyck Post and Agnes Boonen and the families of Jan Wessels and Wessel Hermans.  A review of several Boonen families in the Netherlands in a later post[49] explores the possibility that Agnes is a niece of Metje Boonen, wife of Wessel Hermans, and that Wessel Hermans is related to Jan Wessels.  Those records include:

1.      Warner2 Wessels (Wessel1) and his wife, Anna Elzabeth Massop, were baptismal witnesses for Elizabeth, daughter of Lodewyck Post and Agnes Boonen, Warner possibly Agnes’ first cousin.[50]

2.      Wandel2 (also known as Warner) Wessels (Jan1), was one of the baptismal witnesses for Helen3 Post (Elias2, Agnes1 Boonen), Warner possibly a cousin-in-law of Agnes.[51]

3.      Annetje3 Wessels (Warner2Jan1) was probably one of the baptismal witnesses for Lodewyck3 Post (Elias2, Agnes1 Boonen), Annetje possibly a cousin-in-law of Agnes.[52]

Lastly, there is a lot of overlap in the children's names in the Wessel and Hermans families.  Both families had children named Herman and Hendrickje, possibly after their paternal grandparents.  Wessel and Metje had children named Dirck and Mary after their maternal grandfather and probable maternal grandmother.  Both families had sons named Warner, possibly named after a paternal uncle.  Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans had children named Hartman and Jannetje after their probable maternal grandparents (note that Annetje’s sister, Fytje, wife of Michael Vreeland, had her oldest daughter named Jannetje and her third son named Hartman).

[35a] J.G.B. Bulloch, A History of the Glen Family of South Carolina and Georgia, p. 31, probably referencing “Box 2.13, Volume 14: Mortgages of Lots and Tracts of Land in the City of New York and New Orange, 1664-1675, bound manuscript, 1862,” see https://a860-collectionguides.nyc.gov/repositories/2/archival_objects/637377, probably referencing Edmond O’Callahan’s translantion: Volume 6. Deeds and mortgages of lots and tracts of land in The City of New York and New Orange, 1664-1675.  This contains translation of deeds of New Orange, 1671-1674, and part of No. 5 original series, presumably No. 5. Burgomasters and Schepens, 1663-1665.  See: The City Record, 13 Feb 1903, 1262, online at: http://cityrecord.engineering.nyu.edu/data/1903/1903-02-13.pdf.  I believe these records are indexed in “Dutch Records in the City Clerk's Office, New York, Part 1, Collated by Theodore Banta from Year-Book of the Holland Society of New York, 1901, Index of Mortgages, 1664 - 1675. P. 147.” As being on pages 105 and 131, but I cannot find what is the publication that is being referred to.
