Family of Mary Voorhees and Peter Blue

Family of Mary Voorhees and Peter Blue

1.  MARY6 VOORHEES  (JACOBUS5, JACOBUS4, AUKE3 VAN VOORHEES, JAN STEVENSE2, STEVEN COERTSE1) was born bef. 19 Aug 1759 when she was baptized at the DRC of Harlingen, NJ, and died 28 Sep 1838 in Mahoning, Northumberland, PA.  She married PETER BLUE, son of FREDERICK BLAUW and JANE NEVIUS.  He was born on 3 Dec 1752, baptized 14 Jan 1753 at DRC of Harlingen, NJ, and died 19 Mar 1826 in Mahoning, Columbia, PA.

Information for this family comes from findagrave.com:
Grove St., Presb Church Cemetery, Danville, Montour County, Pennsylvania

Mary, whose father also went by the name Jacobus, inherited a 1/13 share of her father's estate (the daughters receiving a 1/13 share and the sons a 2/13 share), as detailed in a later deed:
VV Bk # 240 p 134
In May 1816 John Voorhees of Northumberland Co., PA, of the first part and James and William B. Voorhees of Montgomery Twsp., Somerset Co., NJ, of the second part (witnesses) state: whereas Okey Voorhees late of Montgomery Twsp. deceased was at the time of his death seized as of fee in a certain farm and plantation in Montgomery Co. which adjoined the lands of Abraham Voorhees, Arthur Sutphen, James Nevius, Ezekiel Blue and Lewis Tulane containing 192 acres.
Okey Voorhees died intestate leaving issue:
- James Voorhees,
- John Voorhees,
- Abraham Voorhees,
- Charity Voorhees,
- Mary Voorhees,
- Martha Voorhees,
- Eleanor Voorhees and
- Elizabeth Voorhees
sons and daughters and also
    - James Voorhees,
    - John Voorhees,
    - Eleanor Voorhees wife of Elijah Crawford and
    - Elizabeth Voorhees
sons and daughters of his deceased on Gilbert.
James Voorhees, Eleanor Crawford (late Eleanor Voorhees) and Elizabeth Voorhees, grandchildren of Okey Voorhees deceased, by a power of attorney dated 12 April 1816, appointed their brother John Voorhees their agent and attorney to release and convey all their shares and interest to the estate by reason of the death of their grandfather Okey Voorhees. In consideration of the sum of $1500 paid to him in the presence of James Voorhees and William Voorhees, John does discharge James and William B. Voorhees as tenants in common and does convey to James Voorhees and William Voorhees land in Montgomery county bounded by Lewis Tulane, James Voorhees, and William Voorhees, and the widow Blue. (Somerset Co., NJ, Deeds book, page 393-94)

Mary and her husband soon sold the land she inherited:
On 7 Apr 1800 Peter Blue of Northumberland, PA and Mary, his wife, sold to Ezekiel Blue, land at Blawenburg, being their 1/13 share in the estate of Okey Voorhees, dec'd.
Somerset Co., NJ Deeds, Vol B, page 681.

An abstract of Peter's will reads:
Wills and Administrations, Columbia Co, Vol 1, p 216, 1826
Peter's will, dated 3 Mar 1826 in Mahoning, Columbia Co., PA lists his wife, Mary, and
"all my children to whit my sons, Ezekial, Gilbert, John, Aaron, Reuben, Peter & David, and my daughter Mary"  There is no provision that distinguishes between his children suggesting he had a 2nd wife.

Peter Blue's wife was generally thought to be Mary Montgomery, daughter of John Montgomery and Mary (Knox), but this deed shows he was married to Mary Voorhees by 1800.  Their son, Gilbert, named after his maternal uncle, suggests they were married by 1786, so if Peter married a Mary Montgomery as a first or 2nd wife, she was not the mother of many, if any, of his children.
