Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y." - Jacob3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1)

Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Some of His Descendants”, by Wilson V. Ledley

The family of Jacob3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1) (#12) and Barbara Verdon

94: 39.  Their daughter, Angeniejte4, wife of Johannes Schoute Thomaszen, had another daughter, Sarah5.  She married Hendrick Hendricksen by license dated 03 Apr 1751.[1]  Her mother, Agnes Tomson, agreed to the marriage.[2]

94: 39.  Their daughter, Femmetje4, was not baptized in 1709 as stated by Ledley.  That was their daughter, Jannetje4, as stated in the baptismal record.[3]  Jannetje probably died young as no further records of her have been found.  Femmetje was probably born about 1702, based on the fact that she had at least the three Stellingwerf children before she had her first child, Anthony, by her second husband, Johannes Holsaert, on 1 Jan 1729.[4]   She had a daughter, Barbara, born 28 Jan 1730/31.[5]  Her grandchildren are mentioned in the will of her brother, Jacob.[6]

94: 205.  Their son, William4, married a woman named Ann.  She was probably the daughter of John Holsaert and Cornelia Maas.[7]
·         William was the executor for the estate of John Holsaert,[8] husband of his sister, Femmetje.  John Holsaert was probably the son of Anthony and Rachel Holsaert based on the naming of his oldest son, Anthony.[9]  John was apparently still a minor in 1724 when administration of Anthony’s estate was granted to his widow, Rachel.[10]
·         The families of William Bennet and John Holsaert appear to be living together in the 1731 census[11] of Brooklyn, Kings Co., N.Y.[12]
·         A family record[13] for William’s family was donated to the Brooklyn Historical Society by the same family that donated the family record for the Holsaert family.
·         The witnesses for the baptism of their daughter Neeltje[14] on 4 May 1735 were Peter Meserole and his wife, Sarah.  Sarah may be Annetje’s half-sister, Sarah Waldron, baptized 05 Aug 1716.[15]  Peter Meserole married second a woman named Phebe.[16]
·         The naming of their children suggests a close relationship with the Holsaert family, including John and Cornelia Holsaert, Anthony and Rachel Holsaert and Abraham and Grietje Holsaert Westervelt, Annetje’s presumed paternal aunts and uncles.[17]

William and Anne’s children included:
1)      Jacob5, named after his paternal grandfather,
2)      John5, named after his probable maternal grandfather, John Holsaert,
3)      Neeltje5, named after her probable maternal grandmother, Cornelia Maas,
4)      William5, named after his father,
5)      Anthony5, named after his probable maternal great uncle, Anthony Holsaert,
6)      Rachel5, named after her probable maternal great aunt, Rachel Willems Cornell Holsaert,
7)      Agnes5, named after her paternal aunt, Agnes Bennet Van Brokle [Brakel],
8)      Cornelius5, named after his probable maternal grandmother, assuming his sister Neeltje died young,
9)      Abraham5, named after his probable maternal great uncle, Abraham Williams Westervelt,
10)  Margaret5, named after her probable maternal great aunt, Grietje Holsaert Westervelt.[18]

Ann, daughter of John Holsaert and Cornelia Maas, was married to John Cooper by 1726 when her son, John, was baptized[19] in New York City.  John Sr. appears to have died within a year as he is listed in the 1726 Tax Assessment of the East Ward of New York City,[20]  but in 1727 it is Widow Cooper who is listed.[21]

94: 206.  Their grandson, Jacob5 (William4), did not make his will in 1794. Instead, it was his uncle Jacob4 Bennet (Jacob3, Adriaen2, Willem1), as seen later.  He may be the Jacob Bennet married Annetje Berdan.  Ledley identified her husband as Jacob5 Bennet (Jacob4, Jacob3, Adriaen2, Willem1), however, that Jacob died young as will be seen later, or at least without descendants.  Jacob5 was a jeweler in Bergen.[22]  His daughter, Rachel6, would have been named after her presumed paternal aunt, Rachel.

94: 207.  Their granddaughter, Rachel5 (William4), married Jacobus Emans by license dated 19 Mar 1761,[23] William Bennet, probably Rachel’s brother, was the bondsman.  Ledley confused her with her aunt, Annetje Bennet, discussed later.

94: 207, 94: 163.  Their granddaughter, Agnes5 (William4), married James Van Brackle, her brother, Anthony, being the fellowbondsman[24] for the marriage license.  Ledley had identified James Van Brackle’s wife as the daughter of Johannes4 Bennet (Willem3, Willem2, Willem1).  Changes for that family discussed later show Johnannes’4 daughter, Angeniejte5, married Walter Hyer.  They had twelve children.[25]

94:207.  Their grandson, Cornelius5 (William4), died before 21 May 1784 when administration of his estate was granted to his brother, Abraham.[37]  He had another daughter, Deborah, who joined with William Bennet and Johanna Bennet in the sale of a four acre lot to Henry Pope on 17 Aug 1801.[38]  It is likely Deborah died before 10 October 1801[39] when a second deed of two acres to Henry Pope was given but which Deborah did not enter into.

94: 40, 94: 206.  Their daughter, Annetje4, mistaken by Ledley as her niece, Rachel5 Bennet (William4, Jacob3, Willem2, Willem1), was probably their youngest child, born about 1715.  She married Peter Emans sometime before their only known child, Jacobus5, baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Utrecht[26] on 30 Sep 1739.  Jacobus Bennet of Brooklyn (Annetje’s father or brother) sold land in Middlesex, N.J. to Peter Emans of Gravesend on 25 Mar 1739.[27]  She was mentioned in the will, dated 31 May 1796, of her brother,[28] Jacob, as being an aged widow.  It was Annetje’s son, Jacobus Emans, who married her niece, Rachel5 Bennet, as seen earlier.

94: 205.  The largest change in this family is in regards to their son, Jacob4.  He was married probably three times, but he had no survivors when he wrote his will in Brooklyn 1794.[29]  His will mentions:
1)   his aged sister, Annetje Emans, a widow,
2)   Magdalena, the widow of his deceased nephew, Jacob Stellingwerf,
3)   five children of his deceased nephew, Jacob Stellingwerf,
      a) Elizabeth, wife of Denys Denys,
      b) Femmetje, wife of Aaron Van Pelt,
      c) Catherine, wife of Johannes Couwenhoven,
      d) Peter Stellingwerf,
      e) the children of his deceased nephew, Jacob Stellingwerf, Jr., not named.
The five children were grandchildren of his sister, Femmetje4, wife of Peter Stellingwerf.

Jacob4 did not marry Antje Jacobs.  An abbreviated transcription[30] of the baptismal record in 1730 of his son, Jacob5, showed his mother’s name as Antje with no surname.  However, the transcription of the full records published later[31] shows his mother’s name was Jannetje,[32] not Antje.  Jacob4 and Jannetje appear to be living with his parents in the census of Kings Co., N.Y.,[33] there being two males over 10 (Jacob3 and Jacob4) and two females over 10 (their wives).  There is no child in the household, so if Jacob4 and his wife were living with his parents, the Jacob5 baptized in 1730 died very young.

Jacob4 married second Catherine Woertman, widow of Adriaen4 Bennet (Isaac3, Adriaen2, Willem1).  That marriage will be discussed later in relation with her first husband.

94: 205.  Ledley believed that their grandson, Jacob5 (Jacob4) did live to maturity, that he married Antje Jacobs (though he does not give her name), and had a son, Jacob6, baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City:
1754 Dec 08. Jakob Bennet, Antje Jakobs. Jacob Bennet. Nicholaas Cermer, Elizabet Van Dyck huis v. v. Hendrik Cermer.[34]
However, the father in this record is misrecorded and should be Jacob Stellingwerf.  The child is given a middle name of Bennet, unusual enough for the time, but very unlikely if his surname was Bennet as well.  Antje Jakobs married Jacob Stellingwerf as is seen in the following record:
1750 Oct 03. Abraham Brouwer, Barbara Stellingwerf. Jakob. Jakob Stellingwerf, Antje Jakobs, z. huis v.[35]
The child, Jacob Bennet Stellingwerf, is named (without the middle name) in the will[36] of his great uncle, Jacob Bennet, as one of his legatees.

94: 205. Ledley thought that Jacob5 married second Annetje Berdan and had a daughter named Rachel who lived to maturity, married and had children of her own.  However, since his supposed father, Jacob4, did not mention any descendants in his will, this Jacob would not be his son. The husband of Annetje Berdan was tentatively identified above.

94: 208, 95: 24.  Their granddaughter, Margaret5 Bennet (William4) was thought to have married Samuel Gerritsen, but she did not, as shown later.  She may have married Jacob Vandervoort by license dated 08 Jun 1773 in Kings Co., NY. [40]
