As mentioned in the opening article of this series, a probate record regarding the
estate of Jan3 Bennet (Willem2, Willem1) has raised
the need for re-examining this family. The
largest change is regarding his son, Jan4 Bennet, but others are discussed
as well.
95: 23, 93: 204, 93: 158. Their son, William4, probably married
Mayke Lanen Van Pelt, daughter of Hendrick Thys Lanen Van Pelt and Marritje Bennet,
as his first wife. The witnesses at the baptism
of their daughter, Mayke, were John and Aeltje Staff. Aeltje was the daughter of Johannes Christoffels
Schaers and Mary Bennet, baptized on 28 Jul 1678 at the Reformed Dutch Church of
Brooklyn,[1] thus Mayke Lanen’s half-sister. Aeltje married first Benjamin Oldes in July 1703.[2] She married second John Staff on 17 May 1714.[3] Being born about 1691, William would have been
about 27 at the baptism of Mayke5, with plenty of time before his presumed
second marriage to Sarah Sherman. Their daughter,
Mayke5,[4] was probably named after her
deceased half-sister.
93: 199, 94: 158. Ledley suggested William4 may have been a son
of Willem3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1). However, given the above and the lack of any other
evidence of that Willem or his father makes that placement very doubtful.
95: 22, 95: 25. Their granddaughter, Aeltje5 (William4),
probably married John Merrill, not John Peter Snyder. William had moved back to Kings Co., N.Y. by 1740,
so a marriage to John Merrill of Staten Island is more likely based on geographical
proximity. The witnesses for the baptism
of their son, John Merrill, on 14 Sep 1741 at the RDC of Staten Island were Jan
Bennit and Aeltje Bennit, probably the child’s maternal uncle, Jan Bennet, and
his wife, Aeltje Couwenhoven. Also, John Merrill had a daughter
named Sarah, presumably named after her maternal grandmother. Ledley thought that Aeltje, wife of John Merrill,
married second Christopher Van Pelt. However,
their marriage record[5] shows Christopher’s wife as
Aeltje Bennet, not Merrill, as would be the case if she was previously married.
The wife of John Peter Snyder was probably an undocumented daughter of Jan4,
William4’s brother, see below.
94: 24, 94: 208. Their granddaughter, Margaret5 (William4),
married Jeremiah Remsen by license dated 10 Feb 1761.[6] The bondsman was Peter Vandervoort, Jr., brother-in-law[7] of Mayke5 Bennet,
Margaret5’s sister. They had a
son, Jeremiah.[8] Margaret married second Samuel Gerritsen by license
dated 5 Oct 1769.[9] They had two children; Mary, baptized on 26 Aug
1770,[10] and Maria, baptized on 12
Jan 1772.[11] The witnesses were Isaac Johnson and Jannetje
Johnson, y.d. Jannetje was the daughter of
Isaac Johnson and Christina Vandervoort,[12] sister-in-law of Mayke5
Bennet, Margaret5’s sister. It
was not Margaret5 Bennet (William4, Jacob3, Adrian2,
William1) as Ledley had supposed.
95: 24, 95: 207. Their grandson, Johannes5 (Jacobus4),
did not have a daughter named Maria. Ledley
assigned the same baptismal record to Maria, daughter of Jan5 Bennet
(Joost4, Isaac3, Adriaen2, Willem1)
and his unknown wife, which is the correct placement.
95: 25, 95: 22. Their granddaughter, Aeltje5 (Jacobus4),
married Christopher Van Pelt, but she did not marry John Merrill as described earlier. Aeltje and Christopher had another daughter, Geertje6,
baptized 29 Oct 1752.[13] They had another daughter, Catherine6, who married a man
named Carmen, who sold her 1/11 portion of the estate of her father to
Christopher J. Van Pelt on 21 Apr 1815, Monmouth Co., NJ Deeds, Vol Y, pg. 382. They had a son, John C. Van Pelt, who bought
land from his father on 10 Sep 1801, Monmouth Deeds, vol N, pg. 316. As John C. Van Pelt and his wife, Agnes, he sold
that land on 5 Mar 1830. Monmouth Co., NJ Deeds, Vol. W, pg. 279. They probably had a son, Christopher6,
who appears in 1806 tax records of Middletown, Monmouth, N.J.[14] (where his father’s estate
was probated) as Christopher Van Pelt, Jr. He is probably the Christopher
C. Van Pelt who appears in several of the land records probably settling his
father estate, which was divided into 11 parts, 2 for each son and 1 for each
daughter. The last part was probably for
Geertje or Elizabeth, who may have married John Whitlock who entered into
several deeds, presumably settling Chirstopher’s estate.
95: 25. Their great-granddaughter, Helena6, (Johnannes5,
Jacobus4), did not marry Richard Garretson. As will be seen later, that was Neeltje5
Bennet (Johnannes4, Jacob3, Willem2, Willem1).
95: 25. Their grandson, William5
(Jacobus4), probably had two additional children. Ann, daughter of William and Leona Bennet was
born on 07 Jul 1759.[15] William, son of William and
Lea Bennet was born on 23 May 1761.[16]
95: 26. Their grandson, Cornelius5 (Jacobus4), did
have a son named Cornelius6, baptized on 08 Mar 1769.[17] Ledley listed him as a supposed son.
95: 26. Jan4 Bennet is known to be their son based on an estate
record which shows that John Bennet of Middletown was the executor of the estate
of John Bennet, late of Middletown, who was the executor of the estate of John Bennet
of Long Island, N.Y. The will of Jan3
Bennet designates his son, Jan4 as one of the executors of his will. No probate record has been found for Jan4,
but as his oldest son, John5 would have been the most likely administrator
of the estate of his father. John5
wrote his will on 12 Dec 1802 in Middletown, Monmouth Co., N.J., so he was alive
at the time, living in right place. Besides,
the complaint was brought by Richard Merrill for payment. Richard Merrill was the husband of Eva4,
daughter of Jan3 Bennet.
“Bennit-pg 96; Jan. 1789. Richard Merrill was a complainant against John
Bennit who was the administrator of the estate of John Bennit, dec'd., late of Middletown,
who was the executor of the estate of John Bennit, dec'd, late of Long Island.”[18]
Who then were the parents of the supposed children of Jan4 Bennet (Jan3,
Willem2, Willem1)?
1) 95: 26, 94: 158. John (#240) has no clear
connection to this family. Ledley assumed
he was the John Jr. who was on the subscribers' list in 1742. However, John Sr. had not yet written his will,
so it could equally have been him. John (#240)
was probably Johannes4 Bennet (Jacob3, Willem2,
Willem1), as described later.
2) 95: 27, 94: 159. Gertuyd (#241), wife
of Jacob Boerum, was identified earlier as the daughter of Adriaen4 Bennet
(Jan3, Adriaen2, Willem1) and Annetje Wyckoff.
3) 95: 27, 94: 113. Margaret (#242) was the
daughter of Jan3 Bennet (Willem2, Willem1) and
Annetje Van Sicklen. See the discussion of
that family later.
4) 95: 27. Jacob (#243) was originally identified
by Ledley as a son, but that Jacob was later identified as the son of Jacob5
Bennet (William4, Jacob3, Willem2, Willem1)
and Elizabeth Conselje. As Ledley offered
no information about this Jacob, it is likely he should not be considered a son.
5) 95: 27. Aeltje (#244) was the daughter
of Jan3 Bennet (Willem2, Willem1) and Annetje Van
Sicklen. Cornelius Shourt was her first husband. See the discussion of that family later.
Of the children of Jan4
Bennet and Ida Van Mater:
94: 165. Their son, Adriaen5, probably did not exist as only “a
child” is mentioned in the baptismal record[19]. Ledley assumed that the child was named Adriaen
based on the normal Dutch naming conventions, but given the change in his parentage,
that assumption no longer holds.
94: 166, 95: 16. Their son, John5, was named after his paternal
grandfather. He was likely the child baptized
in 1724, since his sister, Neeltje, was baptized in 1728 and 1730 would be a late
birth date for John who married in 1749.[20] Ledley placed his children in two separate families,
three of the children being duplicates. John5
(#138) married first Sarah Smock, their children being listed correctly. John (#196) married second Mary Van Mater and
third a woman named Margaret. In the second
family, the first three children, Barnes, John and Hannah, were actually from his
first marriage, as known from their baptismal records.[21] Neeltje and Peter were children of his second
wife, as shown by their baptismal records,[22] Neeltje being named after
her deceased sister and Peter being named after his mother’s first husband, Peter
Lefferts. Sarah was undoubtedly a daughter
of Mary, as she was named after John’s first wife and she appears in her father’s
will[23] with the group of children
who are known be of his first and second wives who had already received their portions. The others are almost certainly children of his
third wife, Margaret, the first being Mary, named after his second wife.
Ledley, citing Beekman,[24] lists five children of his
second wife, Mary Van Mater, by her first husband, Peter Lefferts. However, Peter and Mary were married in 1759,[25] had a daughter, Maria, baptized
in 03 Aug 1760,[26] had a son, Cryneius, baptized
on 14 Feb 1762[27] and Peter was deceased by
30 May 1763.[28] Peter’s will lists only two children, Maria and
John. Beekman lists a daughter, Engletje,
born 31 Mar 1755, and a son, Leffert. Engeltje
was born well before Peter and Mary’s wedding, so is almost certainly not a daughter
of Mary. Unless there were twins, John and/or
Leffert were not the children of Peter and Mary either. It is likely that some or all of the other children
listed by Beekman were children of an unknown first wife of Peter Lefferts.
94: 165, 95: 22. It is likely they had a daughter named Aeltje5,
named after her paternal grandmother. She
may be their unnamed child baptized in 1724, but was possibly born earlier as her
mother, Ida Van Mater, was listed as Ida Bennet in a baptismal record in Freehold
in 1722[29] and her father, Jan, joined
the church in 1721.[30] Based on geographical proximity and a process
of elimination, she is probably the Aeltje Bennet who married John Peter Snyder
before 07 Sep 1743 when their son, Peter, was baptized at the Reformed Dutch of
Freehold.
94: 165, 95: 163. They had a son named William5. John5 Bennet of Middletown, Monmouth
Co., N.J., eldest son of John Bennet, deceased, deeded[31] land to William Bennet on
4 Apr 1755. In the deed John is said to be
a blacksmith, as was also stated in his marriage bond with Sarah Smock.
94: 111. Geertje4 and Teunis Van Pelt had a son named Johannes5,
as well as a son named Jan5. Both
are mentioned in the Teunis’ will.[32] Jan married Jannetje Hyer. Johannes married Ann Hyer. They had at least two children, Teunis6
and Annetje6, both baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Freehold.[33]
94: 112. Antje4 and Gerbrant Pieters had another son, Peter5. Peter was appointed administrator of Gerbrant’s
estate on 14 May 1747.[34] Two other children have been identified:[35] Aeltje, born about 1724 and Christyntje, born
about 1726.
The Family of Jan3 Bennet (Willem2, Willem1)
(#20) and Annetje Van Sicklen
94: 113, 95: 27. Their daughter, Aeltje4, married first
Cornelius Sjoert/Shourts on 19 May 1746.
However, she had a child named Cornelius previous to their marriage who was
baptized on 23 Mar 1746.[36] The witnesses were Peter Lammerse and Catherine
Lammerse, Peter's daughter. Peter married
Mary Bennet,[37] Aeltje’s half-sister. Pieter Haughwout was Aeltje’s second husband.
94: 113, 95: 27. They had a daughter named Margaret4. Ledley mistakenly identified her as a daughter
of his son, Jan4, as noted earlier.
Margaret, daughter of Jan and Annetje Bennet, was baptized in 1722 at the
Reformed Dutch Church of New Utrecht.[38] John Terhune & Margaret Van Sicklen were the
witnesses for her baptism. Margaret was the sister of Annetje Van Sicklen, making
it more likely that Margaret was the daughter of John Bennet, Sr. and Annetje Van
Sicklen, rather than Jan Bennet Jr. and an otherwise unknown wife named Annetje. Margaret is probably the female under 10 listed
as living with him in the 1731 Census of Brooklyn.[39] She died young as she is not mentioned in the
will of her father.[40]
