Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y." - Angeniejte3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1)

Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Some of His Descendants”, by Wilson V. Ledley

The Family Angeniejte3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1) (#16) and Hans Volkerts Van Nostrand

93 (1962): 200. Johannes Folkerts, husband of Angeniejte Bennet, and Jannetje Folkerts, wife of Abraham Bennet, are sometimes identified as children of Volkert Dircks and Annetje Phillips, as noted by Ledley.  However, based on baptismal records, the naming of their children and Johannes' will, it appears they were actually the children of Volkert Hans Van Nostrand and Sarah Albertse Terhune.  For most of their lives, Johannes Van Nostrand and Jannetje Van Nostrand used the patronymic form of their name, Folkerts.  However, Johannes and his children reverted to the surname, Van Nostrand, revealing their true ancestry.

The baptismal record Jannetje Van Nostrand reads:
Den 13 [Nov 1681] op Amersfoort.  K. Jannetje.  O. Volkard Hansz; Sara Alberts. G. Hans Jansz. Geertje (moeders moeder). [(mother's mother).][1]

The abstract of the will of Volkert Hansen Van Nostrand mentions his children, Hance [Hans / Johannes] and Jannetje, so they lived past early childhood:
1695 Nov. 18. Hansen, ffulchart, Volkert, of New Barbadoes; will of.  Son Hance, daughter Jannecke; legacies to Jacob Zabrosqua and Machiel van der Linde.  Real and personal property.  Executors - brothers Simon Hancon and Garit Hancon, Albert Zabrisqua and Lowrence Lowrencon.  Witnesses - Alberat Zaborowsky, Wm. Lawrence, Louwerens Louwerense, Maegryetie.  Proved May 27, 1698.  N.J. Archives, XXL, p. 283, and Bergen Wills.  1698 May 16. (Dutch).  Inventory of the estate; made by Guiliam Bertholf and Thomas Lourensen, at Ackinsack (£4850, incl. negro slaves).[2]

The abstract of Johannes' will reads:
5 July 1753, van Noordstrand, Johannes Folkertse, of Somerset Co.; will of.  Wife, Ann.  Son Folkert.  Grandchildren - John and Angenitje van Noordstrand.  Real and personal estate.  Executors - son Folkert, Cornelius Bennet of Middlesex Co., and Christopher Probasco of Somerset Co.  Witnesses - William Ouke, Minne van Voorhies and Jacob Weiser.  Proved April 5, 1756.  Lib. F, p. 339.[20]

His second wife, mentioned in his will as Ann, was Annetje Van Gelder.[21]

In his will Johannes uses both his surname and his patronymic name.  The grandchildren mentioned are the children of his son, Isaac, apparently deceased, where Johannes’ patronymic name was used as the witness at their baptisms.  He went by both his surname and patronymic names as witness for his nephews and nieces.  This alternation between the two forms of his name shows his surname to be Van Nostrand.  The naming of his children indicates his parents were Volkert Hansen Van Nostrand and Sarah Albertse Terhune.

Though no records have been found which show the use of the Van Nostrand name by Jannetje, the number of times she and Johannes were witnesses for each other’s children, their common patronymic name, the naming of her children, and the will of Volkert Hansen Van Nostrand all indicate Jannetje and Johannes were siblings.
