Additions and Corrections to “Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn,
N.Y., and Some of His Descendants”, by Wilson V. Ledley
The Family of Abraham3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1)
(#15) and Jannetje Folkerts
94: 41. Abraham3 was listed as one of the freeholders in New Brunswick
in 1747.[1] He is also listed in 1752.[2]
94: 41. Jannetje Folkerts, wife of Abraham3, was probably the
daughter of Volkert Hansen Van Nostrand and Sarah Albertse Terhune. For a discussion of her parentage, see the family
of Angeniejte3 Bennet (Adriaen2, Willem1) later.
94: 41. Abraham3 and Jannetje had a child4, unnamed,
baptized at the DRC of Freehold in May 1710,[3] not mentioned by Ledley. This child could be Jacob, for whom no baptismal
record has been found, but Ledley approximates Jacob’s birth as 1713. No further trace.
95: 17. His son, Adriaen4, probably settled near Griggstown, N.J.,
being the defendant in several lawsuits in New Jersey in 1765.[4] He is mentioned in a newspaper article regarding
the forced sale of 125 acres of his land at Griggstown on 25 Mar 1766.[5] His cousin, Adriaen4 Bennet (Adriaen3,
Adriaen2, Willem1), lived near Cranbury before and after this
time period, as seen earlier.
95: 18. Adriaen4 did not have a son named Benjamin5. He was Benjamin5 Bennet (Adriaen4,
Adriaen3, Adriaen2, Willem1), as identified earlier.
95: 18. Abraham4 probably married as his second wife, Marytje
Corson, not his son, Abraham5.[6] Ledley notes that Abraham5 was sixteen
years younger than his presumed wife. He
would also have been married when he was about nineteen, young for the time, though
possible. Their respective locations also
suggest this placement. Abraham4 owned
land in Northampton Twp. in 1748.[7] Marytje Corsen appeared as a baptismal witness
at Churchville in Northampton Twp. until at least 1764.[8] Abraham5 appears to have been living
in Tinicum in 1768,[9] some distance from Churchville. Abraham and Marytje’s daughter, Sarah5,
would have been named after her paternal aunt.
Abraham and Marytje had another daughter, Maria, born 12 Oct 1758.[10]
95: 19. His grandson, Hendrick5 (Abraham4), probably
married Elizabeth White, not Hendrick5 Bennet (Hendrick4,
Willem3, Willem2, Willem1). Abraham5, Hendrick5’s brother,
married Martha White. William White names
his daughters, Elizabeth Bennet and Martha Bennet and his son-in-law, Abraham Bennet
in his will.[11] Though Elizabeth’s husband is not named in her
father’s will, being married in Bucks, Pa. to her brother-in-law Abraham’s brother,
is far more likely than her having married a distant cousin of his, both geographically
and genetically. See the family on Hendrick5
Bennet (Hendrick4, Willem3, Willem2, Willem1)
for further discussion of his family.
95: 19. His grandson, Johannes5 (Abraham4), probably
married Margaret Redmond by license dated 20 May 1765.[12]
95: 19. Jacob4 purchased land in Northampton, Bucks, Pa. sometime
between 1 May 1731 when his brother, Abraham, purchased it from Samuel Brown[13] and 12 Dec 1739 when Jacob
released the land to Jonathan Abbot. Jacob
returned to New Jersey by 25 Feb 1741 when as resident of New Brunswick, N.J. he
purchased land there[14]. Though uncertain, the land was probably located
near South River.[15] He may be the Jacob Bennet, age 42, born in Bucks,
Pa. who spoke Low Dutch well, who broke out of the Cape May jail[16] in January 1755. Though not
born in Pa., he lived there for some time and otherwise fits the description.
95: 19. Jacob4 probably had another son, John5. He is mentioned in a Middlesex Co., N.J. deed
dated 20 Dec 1791 as having sold land located at South River to his brother Folkert,[17] presumably Jacob’s son. However, since Jacob’s brother, Folkert4,
also lived in New Brunswick[18], John Bennet could be his
son and Folkert an undocumented son of Folkert4.
95: 19. Jacob4 probably
had another son, Benjamin5. Benjamin
was born about 1754 at South River, N.J and enlisted in the revolutionary army at
Tinicum, Bucks Co., Pa. according to his pension application.[19] He was listed as 89 in the 1840 census,[20] living with his son, Abraham6. This suggests Benjamin may have been born as early
as 1749. In his father's pension application
Abraham stated he was 59 in 1832, so born about 1773, probably too early to for
his father to have been the son of Folkert4, baptized in 1756. He was listed in the tax listings of Tinicum,
Bucks Co., Pa. of 1781 through 1783.[21]
95: 21, 95: 206. Because of his age, Ledley suggested Johannes4,
son of Abraham3, may have been married previous to his marriage to Styntje. Their marriage was a second marriage for Styntje
who married first Reynier Van Sicklen.[22] Reynier died before 06 Mar 1749/50 when his will
was proved.[23] His sons, Ferdinand and Richard, petitioned the
court to appoint guardians for them, Ferdinand choosing John Bennet of Pa.[24]
94: 210, 95: 206. Johannes4 probably married first Magdalena5
Bennet (Isaac4, Isaac3, Adriaen2, Willem1).[25] Ledley was quite tentative in his identification
of Magdalena’s husband as Johannes4 Bennet (Jacob3, Willem2,
Willem1). The marriage record
of Johannes Bennet and Magdalena Bennet states they were both born at the Raritans. Johannes, son of Jacob, was baptized in NYC and
the family did not move to N.J. until later.
Abraham3’s son, Johannes4, was baptized at the First
Reformed Church of New Brunswick, N.J., i.e., in the Raritans.[26] This identification of Johannes
and Magdalena’s parents and his second marriage to Styntje is supported by the naming
of his children. Johannes and Magdalena’s
children, Jannetje5 and Isaac5, were named after their paternal
grandmother and maternal grandfather, respectively. His first son by his second marriage was named
Abraham5 after his paternal grandfather. His first daughter5 of his second marriage
was named Magdalena[27] after his first wife. His son, Rynier5, was named after his
second wife’s first husband, Reynier Van Sicklen.
95: 21. His grandson, Rynier5 (Johannes4), married
his cousin, Maria5 Bennet (Jan5, Joost4, Isaac3,
Adriaen2, Willem1),[28] whom Ledley was unable to
identify.
95: 22, 95: 162. His grandson, Abraham5 (Folkert4),
was not the Revolutionary War pensioner of 1833 that Ledley thought. The pension file[29] says that Abraham was born
at Bushwick, Kings Co., N.Y. in November 1747, whereas Abraham5 was baptized
in New Jersey[30] seven years later. The pensioner, Abraham, was the son of Peter Pra5
Bennet (William4, Jacob3, Willem2, Willem1),
as discussed later. Ledley expressed some
doubt about the ancestry of Abraham5 as he had no son named after his
father. In addition, being baptized in 1754
he would have been 32 when his first child was baptized at Raritan in 1786. His later children were baptized at Hillsborough
and Neshanic. That location and his age suggest
that Abraham may have been the son of John5 Bennet (Hendrick4,
Willem3, Willem2, Willem1) and Maria Post, baptized
on 22 Apr 1764 at Neshanic where some of his own children were later baptized. Though perhaps a coincidence, Abraham’s oldest
son was baptized on the same day his possible niece, Letty, was baptized.[31] Abraham later had two daughters named Letty. Abraham’s wife, Mary Arrowsmith, was likely the
daughter of Joseph and Geertje Arrowsmith, baptized on 06 Nov 1763.[32] If correct, then Abraham’s second son was named
after his paternal grandfather and his third son was named after his maternal grandfather. However, not enough is known currently about either
Abraham to warrant a change in his ancestry.
94: 41, 95: 163. Their son, William4, attributed to this family
by Ledley, was actually the son of Johannes4 Bennet (Willem3,
Willem2, Willem1).
See the earlier discussion of Angeniejte4 Bennet (Isaac3,
Adrian2, Willem1).
94: 41. Their son, Benjamin4, witnessed a couple of deeds with
Peter Bennet in 1747.[33] He married Jannetje Van Sicklen on 11 Jun 1756
in Pa.[34]
