The Family of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt

The Family of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland

The arrival of the families of the brothers, Matthias and Teunis Laenen Van Pelt, in New Netherland in 1663 was detailed by Dorothy A. Koenig.[1]  The descendants of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt adopted the surname Lane.  Many of Matthias’s descendants moved to Somerset Co., NJ and are detailed in a series of articles by Abraham Van Doren Honeyman in the Somerset County Historical Quarterly.[2]  A correction to Honeyman’s genealogy was presented by Fred Sisser.[3]  Since Honeyman’s genealogy incorporated much of the earlier work of Teunis Bergen,[4] Begen’s work will generally not be referenced here except when referenced directly.  Also, Effie Smith’s “A Genealogy of the Van Pelt Family”[5] covers the family of Matthias Lane only briefly, so her material will only be incorporated here by exception.  The goal of this article is to bring together the research presented in those works with additional research that has since been done.

Matthias Lane married Maryken Gijsberts on 1 Nov 1640 at Tiel, The Netherlands.[6]  He married second Adriaentje Hendricks shortly after his arrival in New Amsterdam.[7]

The heirs of Matthias Lane are given, directly or by reference to their spouse, in the abstract of the following estate record:
Page 49.  Agreement and settlement of the Estate of Matthys Jansen Laenen dec'd- dated New Utrecht the last of March 1683, signed Adriana Tryon [sic], Jan C. Vandyck, Tonis Lanen as gardian off Jan & Jacob Tysson, Hendrick Matthyssen Smack as gardian off Jan & Jacob Tysson, Tonis Idensse, Hendrick Tyssen, Gysbert Lanen. In presence of Jac Cortelyouw, Samuel Edsall.  Receipt of legacies dated Jany 12, 1686/7.  Translated by J. Vandewater, Registered Oct. 15th, 1687 J. Vandewater, Regr.[8]

From their baptismal records and other information[9] and the estate record above, it appears that Matthias had at least the following children (Honeyman’s number in parenthesis):
1)      Jan, baptized Mar 1643/44 at Tiel, The Netherlands, died young;
2)      Gysbert (#5), baptized 02 Dec 1646 at Tiel, The Netherlands, married Jannetje Adriaens Lambertszen Smith;
3)      Teuntje (not Tryntje (#3)), born about 1648 in Buren, The Netherlands, married Jan Vandyck;
4)      Jannetje, born about 1650 in The Netherlands, married Teunis Idens Van Huys;
5)      Hendrick (#4), born about 1652 in The Netherlands, m 1 Annetje Tilmans, m 2 Marrietje Bennet;
6)      Jan (#7), born in NY, a minor in 1683, married[10] Aeltje Gerrits Van Duyn;
7)      Jacob (#8), born in NY, a minor in 1683, married[11] Elizabeth Van Barkeloo, and (sup) m 2 Jane Van Couwenhoven.

In addition to these, Honeyman lists children named Anthoine (#2), Annetje (#6), Peter (#10), Elizabeth (#11) and Adriaen (#9).[12]  Koenig lists Annetje, Peter, Elizabeth and Adrian without giving any additional details,[13] as children of Matthias by his second wife, Adriaentje Hendricks.

For Anthoine, Honeyman appears to be following Bergen who lists Anthony Thyssen [Van Pelt] as living in New Utrecht in 1693,[14] his only certain reference to him (Bergen assumes he emigrated with his father in 1663).  However, Bergen appears to have confused him with Anthony Teunisse [Van Pelt], for whom he cites several land, tax and census records in New Utrecht, but omits any reference to the 1693 Tax List of New Utrecht.[15]  That list shows only one Anthony Van Pelt, without a patronymic name, so almost certainly Anthony Teunisse.  Koeing, knowing Anthony did not emigrate with his father,[16] omits him as one of Matthias’ children.  Koening suggests that Anthoine, a female name, was confused by Honeyman with Teuntje (an equivalent of Anthoine) whom he associated with a different child he named Tryntje (Catherine).

The children Annetje (#6), Peter (#10) and Elizabeth (#11), listed by both Honeyman and Koeing, appear to be actually children of Thys Lubbertszen Van Ryp and Tryntje Jans.  Thys Lubberts had two sons named Peter baptized in 1656 and 1657 at New Amsterdam.[17]  His daughter, Annetje, was baptized at Bergen in 1668.[18]  Thys was living in New Utrecht in 1675[19] and 1683,[20] and moved to Brooklyn by 1687.[21]  He was of Cripplebush, Brooklyn, NY, on 4 Apr 1693, when he sold land in New Utrecht, then occupied by Peter Thyssen, to Peter Thyssen, presumably his son.[22]  The next day Thys sold land to Anthony [Juchum] Salms, husband of his presumed daughter, Elizabeth.[23]  Thys’ daughter, Annetje, was stated to have been of Bergen, NJ (compare her baptismal record), living in New Utrecht, when she married Jurian Lootman in 1684.[24]  Thys’ son, Derick, is listed in a version of the 1706 Tax List of New Utrecht[25] as Derick Van Der Ryp.  Peter Tysen and Derrick Tysen (presumably the Derrick Van der Ryp in the 1706 Tax List) of New Utrecht, and John Tysen of Brooklyn, together purchased land at Wiquetunk, Monmouth Co., N. J., presumably brothers.[26]  Effie Smith included their son, Derrick, as one of the sons of Matthias.[27]  Thys’ son, William, is listed in the 1713 Tax Lists of New Utrecht[28] as Willem Tijsen and Willem Vanderyp. Martin Salm and Tryntje Salm, children of Anthony Salm and Elizabeth Thyssen, were witnesses for the baptism of their cousin, Mary, daughter of William and Jannetje Tyssen on 29 May 1705.[28a].

As for Matthias’ supposed last son, Adrian (#9), the estate record show that he was not Matthias’ son.  Fred Sisser places Adrian as his grandson, son of his eldest son, Gysbert.[29]  That placement appears to be correct.  George Beekman also places Adrian as a son of Gysbert.[30].
