Notes on the Descendants of Teunis Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland


The Descendants of Teunis Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland

The arrival of the families of the brothers, Teunis and Matthias Laenen Van Pelt, in New Netherland in 1663 was detailed by Dorothy A. Koenig.[1]  The descendants of Teunis Laenen Van Pelt adopted the surname Van Pelt.  “The Van Pelt Family” by Gerald James Parsons and Robert Howard Van Pelt[2] reviews the research of Koenig and then focuses on the male descendants of Teunis’ son, Aert.  Effie Smith’s “A Genealogy of the Van Pelt Family”[3] covers Teunis’ descendents in an outline fashion, giving some background information, but mostly focusing on the vital statistics.  Michael Pelt’s “Van Pelt Genealogy: North Carolina Origins”[4]  discusses the branch of the family that moved to North Carolina in the 1700s.  The goal of this article is to build on this body of research, clarifying some issues or contradictions, adding descendants and making suggestions for further research.  This post will cover the family of Teunis and his son, Jan.  Subsequent postings will cover the other children of Teunis and provide a genealogical summary.

 

The Family of Teunis1 Laenen Van Pelt

 

Teunis’ family was covered well by Koenig and Parsons, including his four wives: Peterken Andriesse; Grietje Anthonis; Grietje Jans; and Geertje Van Lent, and their six known children: Jan; Hendrick; Wouter; Jacomyntje; Teunis; and Aert.  Parsons pointed out that Aert2 was born in New Netherland, so Teunis had an unknown child that died without heirs before 1700 when a deed[5] between Teunis’ heirs included only five of the six children that emigrated in 1663.  Researchers have proposed several other children for Teunis[6]; including Mary, wife of Henry Day, Teuntje, wife of Harmanus Van Gelder, Rebecca, wife of Abraham Montagne, and Elizabeth.  Mary, Teuntje and Rebecca were thought to be the children of Teunis’ fourth wife, which Koenig points out was not really possible because of his wife’s age.[7]  This is confirmed by the fact that there are no children living in his household in the 1698 Census of King Co., NY.[8] 

Parsons does consider the possibility of Elizabeth being his daughter, noting that she appears to be listed as a witness as Elizabeth Thuensen in a baptismal record at Flatbush for her nephew, Peter Gulick.[9]  However, he points out same baptism is recorded at Brooklyn[10] where the witness is noted as Elizabeth Jansen.  This is not necessarily a contradiction as the surname for women was sometimes recorded as their patronymic name, their husband’s surname, or even their husband’s first name as the wife’s patronymic name.  This baptism is one of a series of baptisms recorded at both churches.  By in large they agree with small variations in spelling, but there are significant differences favoring the Brooklyn versions.  Three baptisms are recorded as occurring in Brooklyn in 1689, but are recorded as being exactly one year later in Flatbush in 1690.[11]  One of those in Flatbush lists Vijtie as the daughter of Willem Bennet and Adriaentie Vandewater, instead of Grietje as listed in Brooklyn.  William Bennet had a daughter named Grietje, but other than this record they had no child named Fijtie.[12]  The recorder appears to have confused one of the witnesses, Fijtie Vandewater, with the child baptized.  Given the above, it is doubtful that the witness for Peter Gulich was Elizabeth Teunissen and she should only be listed as a possible daughter of Teunis Van Pelt.

Reasonable alternate placements exist for the other speculative children of Teunis1.  For Mary, her baptismal record[13] gives her father’s name as Teunis, though her mother’s name is not given.  Therefore, her father must have been Teunis2 Van Pelt (Teunis1).  As will be discussed later, this is supported by the baptismal records of her children.  Teuntje Teunisse  and Rebecca Teunisse have been shown to be daughters of Teunis Idens and Jannetje Thijse (Lane).[14]

The Family of Jan2 Van Pelt (Teunis1)


The will of Jan2 Van Pelt[17] lists ten children (or their spouse): Tunis, Peter, Johanes, Hendrick, Jacob, John, Daniel De Hart [husband of Catherine], Ann, Margaret and Aert Van Pelt.  He had another son, Samuel, who married Ann Stillwell and died before 8 Feb 1709/l0[18] without heirs,[19] so not included in his will.  Ms. Smith includes seven of these children in her genealogy,[20] omitting Catherine, Ann, Samuel and the children of Peter.  Changes and additions to her account are given below.

The Family of Teunis3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1)

                        
The family of Teunis3 is covered more thoroughly in Michael Pelt’s “Van Pelt Genealogy: North Carolina Origins,”[21] which I have not been able to review.  It should be relied upon more than the presentation here.   The surname of Elsje Hendricks, wife of Teunis3, was likely Valk.  Her probable sister, Annetje Hendricks Valk, wife of Mangel Jans Rol, was witness for three of Teunis’ children, while Elsje was a witness of one of Annetje Hendricks’ children.[22]  Teunis and Elsje had four additional children, not listed or listed elsewhere by Smith:[23] 
1) Jan4, bap 10 May 1691, married Maria Perrine.  He had business in North Carolina as early as 1727.[23a]  He died in Bertie Co., NC before 7 Jun 1748.[24]  Jan and Maria had at least 6 children (bap. at RDC of NYC)[25]: Mary5, bap 22 Oct 1710; Jan, bap. 6 Jul 1712, married Catherine Bowman; Elsje, married Peter Bouwman on 25 Nov 1730;[26] Anthony, bap 1 Apr 1716; Elizabeth, bap 15 Jun 1718; Daniel, bap 25 Dec 1719, married Ann.  These children, except Elsje, were listed by Smith[27] as children of Jan3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1) and Aeltje Hoogland.
2)      Teunis, bap 24 Apr 1692, died young. 
3)      Hendrick, bap 15 Oct 1693, died before 30 Sep 1747 in Bertie Co., NC, married 1 Ann Bruyn on 5 Aug 1714 at the RDC of NYC.  Ann is mentioned in the will of her maternal great aunt, Sophia Westerhout Romeyn, as the wife of Hendrick Van Pelt.[27a]  They had a daughter, Annetje5, bapt 1 Apr 1716.[28] He married 2 Margaret De Hart and had two children baptized at the RDC of Staten Island:   Catherine, bap 12 Apr 1719, and Hendrick, bap 1 Jan 1721. 
4)      Mary, born about 1698, married Samuel Johnson and had eleven children (baptized at RDC of NYC)[29]: Jannetje5, bap 9 Nov 1718; Samuel, bap 7 Aug 1720; Mary, bap 9 Jan 1723; Thomas, bap 18 Mar 1724; Jan, bap 26 Dec 1725; Elizabeth, bap 4 Jun 1727; Elizabeth, bap 10 Aug 1729; Annetje, bap 23 May 1731; Jan, bap 16 Jun 1734; Annetje, bap 8 May 1737; and Benjamin, bap 17 May 1741.   Teunis and Elsje’s daughter, Francyntje4, married George Revett on 2 Dec 1715.[30]  They had at least two children:[31] George5, bap 11 Nov 1716; and Teunis, bap 13 Mar 1720.

Teunis and Elsje’s son, Jacob4, probably had five children, based on a website no long available.   Supposedly they were: Anthony5, Henry, Priscilla, John and possibly Elizabeth.[32]

The Family of Peter3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1)


Peter3 married Sarah Bogardus.[33]  Smith listed this Peter as the son of Hendrick2 Van Pelt and Annetje Meinderts,[33a] but she did not know about Peter's first two children, the eldest of which was born too early for him to have been the son of Hendrick.  They had six children:
1) Mary4, probably the child baptized 9 Aug 1696, married Johannes Van Name.[34]  They had two children baptized at Staten Island:[35] Peter5, born 24 Apr 1718; and Sarah, 29 Mar 1725.
2) Blandina, bap. 08 Jun 1701, married Peter Ceilo.[36]  It is not clear whom Smith thought her parents were.  They had eight children baptized at Staten Island:[37] Elsje5, bap. 14 Sep 1718; bap. Peter, 14 Oct 1722; Cornelia, bap. 06 Jun 1725; Sarah, bap. 09 Jul 1727; Daniel, bap. 12 Jan 1728/29; William, bap. 14 Mar 1730/31 (not 1730); Johannes, bap. 16 Nov 1735; and Maria, bap. 16 Nov 1735.
3) Jan, bap. 21 Oct 1707.[38]  He married Jannetje Adams.[39]  Smith lists him as the grandson of Hendrick Van Pelt and Annetje Minards, however, the witnesses at his baptism were his paternal grandparents, Jan Teunis Van Pelt, Maria [Pieterse] Van Pelt.  Jan and Jane had an additional daughter, Jannetje5, bap 17 Apr 1744.[40]
4) Samuel, bap. 25 Jul 1710,[41] dy.
5) William, bap. 23 Nov 1715,[42] died after 1735.
6) Samuel, bap. 16 Apr 1717, married Cornelia (not Maria) Van Valkenburgh, daughter of Jochem Van Valkenburgh and Elsje Klauw, bap 23 Jun 1718.[43]  They had seven children: Elsje5, married William Oostrander;[44] Peter, baptized 19 Jul 1748,[45] m Maria Van Slyck;[46] Jannetje, baptized August 1750,[47] m Frans Pieterse Clauw;[48] Samuel, baptized 05 Jan 1753,[49], m 1 Elizabeth Wessels on 4 Jul 1792,[50] m 2 Elizabeth McMarlin;[51] Jochem, baptized 23 Apr 1757;[52] Sarah, baptized 25 Nov 1759,[53] married Jonas Sluyter;[54] and Engeltje, born about 1761, married Casparus Bronk.[55]  This family is not proven, but is based on the naming of their children after their grandparents in the Dutch naming style and the witnesses at the baptisms of their children.

The Family of Johannes3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1)


His son, Johannes3, had one additional child, Mary4, wife of Henry Day.  As mentioned earlier, she was not the daughter of Teunis1 as proposed by Smith.  Mary and Henry had another son, Johannes5, bap 1 Apr 1717.[56]  The witness was Johannes Van Pelt and wife, the paternal grandparents.

Simon4, son of Johannes3, had three additional children:
1)      Simon5, died before 20 Apr 1798 in Mechlenburg, NC,[57] left eleven children:[58] Ann6,  John, Simon, James, Hannah, Thomas, Mary and Sarah, Abraham, Isaac and William.
2)      Sarah, bap 6 Aug 1745.[59]
3)      Johannes, named as one of their six children on a website no longer available.[60]

Of the children of Peter4, son of Johannes3, Johannes5 married Catherine Lawrence, known from the baptisms of their children at the RDC of Staten Island.  The husband of Barbara5 was John Mercereau.[61]  Jacob5 married Catherine Van Name.[62]

Anna4 Van Pelt (Johannes3) and her husband, Johannes Simonse,[63] had another daughter, Wyntje, baptized 23 May 1749 at the RDC of Staten Island.[64]

The Family of Hendrick3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1)


His son, Hendrick3, did not marry second Margaret De Hart, as was shown earlier.  Hendrick’s son, Jan4, married Hillegond Boekenhoven on 17 Jun 1727.  They had five children (baptisms at DRC of NYC)[65]:
1)      Stephen5, bap 23 Jun 1728;
2)      Johanna, bap 14 Mar 1730/31;
3)      Hendrick, bap 15 Jul 1733;
4)      Catherine, bap 16 Feb 1734/35, married Nicholas Quackenbos[66] on 30 Apr 1758;
5)      Tietje, bap 20 Nov 1737.

The Family of Jacob3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1)


His son, Jacob3, probably did not have a daughter named Wyntje.  She is listed by Smith[67] as being baptized on 3 Jul 1706 at Staten Island.  There is no baptism on that date, but exactly a year later there is a baptism of a Wyntje, daughter of Jacob Jansen.[68]  That would be the patronymic of Jacob Van Pelt, but he never used his patronymic.  Given the lack of other supporting evidence, it is doubtful she was his daughter.

Jacob3 had an additional daughter, Catalyntje4, baptized 08 Nov 1719.[69]  She died young.

The Family of Jan3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1)


His son, Jan3, was not the father of Marytje, Jan, Teunis, Elizabeth and Daniel as listed by Smith.[70]  As seen earlier, they were children of Teunis3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1) and Mary Perrine.

Jan3 was also not the father of Catryna as listed by Smith.[71]  As seen earlier, she was the daughter of Jacob3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1) and Aeltje Hagawout.

The Family of Margaret3 Van Pelt (Jan2, Teunis1)


His daughter, Margaret3, married John Clerck.  They had seven children (baptisms as Staten Island[72] and NYC)[73]:
1)      Dorothy, bap  21 Oct 1707, died young;
2)      Dorothy, bap 19 Apr 1709;
3)      John, bap 17 Apr 1711;
4)      Sarah, bap  14 Jul 1713;
5)      Mary, bap 25 Jan 1715/16, died young:

His daughter, Ann3, married Thomas Johnson.  They had at least four children (baptized at RDC of NYC[76] and Staten Islands)[77]:

[32] Brother of Captain John Van Pelt.  He is first mentioned in 1739 when he buys land in Bertie County.  He is later found in Northampton County, and by about 1751 is in Craven County.  He is Executor for the will of Andrew Allen of Dobbs County, who died in 1762.  The will makes it clear that Jacob's daughter Priscilla married Andrew Allen and that Jacob had a son John.  Anthony and Henry are considered sons of Jacob based on all available evidence.  An Elizabeth Van Pelt from Dobbs County married Mark Mears; based on the process of elimination, she appears to be Jacob's daughter as well.  Jacob moves to Georgia sometime after 1764, after which we have uncovered no further records.
