Notes on the Descendants of Wouter, son of Teunis Van Pelt of New Netherland

Notes on the Descendants of Wouter, son of Teunis Van Pelt of New Netherland

Updated 6/30/2023 Christopher Van Pelt family

This post is a follow-up of an earlier one entitled “Notes on the Descendants of Teunis Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland.”  That post provided an overview of the research on the family.  It included comments and corrections on the family of Teunis Van Pelt and his son, Jan.  This post continues the discussion with the families of the other children of Teunis Van Pelt.  Effie Smith’s “A Genealogy of the Van Pelt Family”a will form the basis for this family, with additions and corrections made to it where appropriate.

The Family of Wouter2 Van Pelt (Teunis1)

Wouter wrote his will[1] on May 21, 1728 in Brooklyn, NY, which was proved 29 Sep 1744.  He does not mention his wife, but he does mention ‘all my children’: Teunis (eldest), Alexander, Peter, Johanes, Mary, Elizabeth and Jackomyntie, and his grand-daughter, Margaret Bennett.  Margaret Bennet was the only child of Wouter's deceased daughter, Margaret.

The Family of Teunis3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1)

Teunis’ son, Wouter4, did not die young.[2]  He married Maria Soper on 19 Aug 1746.[3]  They had a daughter, Catherine5, baptized on 04 Oct 1748 at Shrewsbury, NJ.[4]  She is probably the granddaughter, Caty, named as the wife of Mr. Latham in the will[5] of Teunis, her grandfather.

His daughter, Aeltje4, married Peter Heyer and had seven children (baptisms at Freehold)[6]:
1)      Annetje5, bap 01 Jun 1740;
2)      Geertje, 24 May 1741;
3)      Maria, 19 Dec 1742;
4)      Walter, bap 09 Jun 1745, married Elizabeth Brewer;
5)      Annetje, 01 Nov 1747;
6)      Elsje, 04 Jun 1749;
7)      Teunis, 24 Mar 1750/51, married Catherine Van Pelt (parents unknown) on 19 Mar 1772;[7]

His son, Jan4, married Jane Heyer, but did not have the children Smith assigned to them.[8]  Their supposed son, Christopher, was actually the son of Johannes3 (Wouter2, Teunis1) as discussed later.  Their supposed son, Abraham, appears to have no connection to New Jersey where Jan’s family lived.  He was born about 1787 in New York,[9] married Mary Fountain on 11 Sep 1808 at the Moravian Church, Staten Island, NY[10] and had six children born on Staten Island:[11]
1)      Amy5, born 25 Mar 1809;
2)      Sarah, born 24 Feb 1811;
3)      Henry, born 04 Apr 1816;
4)      Susan Fountain, born 07 Jun 1820 (not listed by Smith);
5)      Mary Thompson, born about 1828 (not listed by Smith);
6)      David Mesereaux, born Jun 1831 (not listed by Smith).
Jane was baptized on 14 Aug 1737,[12] so she would have been 50 in 1787, too old to have been Abraham’s mother.  I have not been able to place this Abraham in another family.

Jan4 and Jane Heyer’s children were (baptisms at Freehold):[13]
1)      Teunis5, bap 29 Apr 1759, named after his paternal grandfather, died young;
2)      Maria, bap 22 Mar 1761, named after her maternal grandmother;
3)      William, bap 24 Apr 1763, named after his maternal grandfather;
4)      Geertje, bap 23 Jun 1765, named after her paternal grandmother;
5)      Jannetje, bap 08 Jun 1777, named after her mother.

His son, Christopher4 married Aeltje Bennet[14] on 02 Dec 1751[15] and died before 31 Oct 1808.[16]  They had at least eight children (baptisms at Freehold)[17]:

1)    Geertje5, bap. 29 Oct 1752;

2)    Jacob, bap. 10 Aug 1753, supposedly died in 1/1809, and married Mary Brooks;[18].  He died before 26 Jan 1809 when John P. Van Pelt was appointed guardian of Walter and Mary.  He was later appointed guardian of Hendrick, William, James, John, and Sarah.  No guardian was found of David who sold his portion of his inheritance himself.  This son's inheritance was divided into 18 parts, 2 for each son and one for each daughter.  Known children are:

a.  Agnes, probably died young

b.  Hendrick J.

c.  William

d.  Walter

e.  Mary.  On 16 Oct 1814 John P. Van Pelt, guardian of Hendrick, William Walter, and Mary Van Pelt, sold their 7/18th of 2/11th of the estate of Christopher Van Pelt, to Christopher J. Van Pelt, Monmouth County, NJ Deeds, vol Z, pg. 467

f.  Sarah.  On 1 Jul 1818 John P. Van Pelt, guardian, sold her 1/18th of 2/11th of the estate of Christopher Van Pelt, to Christopher J. Van Pelt, Monmouth County, NJ Deeds, vol A2, pg. 713.

g.  David.  He was of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ on 17 Apr 1815 when he sold his portion of his grandfather’s estate, Monmouth County, NJ Deeds, Vol Y, pg. 784.

h.  James J.  He was of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ on 3 Feb 1815 when he sold his portion of his grandfather’s estate to Christopher Van Pelt, Monmouth County, NJ Deeds, Vol Y, pg. 785.

i.  John

j.  Jacob.  He was of New Utrecht, Kings, NY on 13 Mar 1815 when he sold portion of his grandfather's estate to Christopher Van Pelt, Monmouth County, NJ Deeds, Vol Y, pg. 783.

        Only 16 of the 18 parts have been identified, but Christopher J. Van Pelt was probably the other son.

3)    Elizabeth, bap. 28 Nov 1756;

4)    Maria, bap. 31 May 1759, married Daniel Hill.

5)    Teunis, bap. 29 May 1762, m Elizabeth, sold part of his father's estate on 7 Mar 1814 to Christopher Van Pelt.

6)    Catherine, m. Unknown Carman, was of Middletown when she sold land of her father's estate on 21 Apr 1815, her husband having predeceased her, to Christopher J. Van Pelt.

7)    Christopher.

8)   John C, purchased land from his father on 10 Sep 1801 (sold later to Alexander Hyer in 1830. Monmouth Co., NJ Deeds, vol. W2, pg. 280).  He married a woman named Agnes.  They were of Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ on 4 Jul 1818 when they sold 14 acres to Christopher J. Van Pelt, Monmouth Co., NJ Deeds, vol A2, pg. 713.

Christopher's estate was divided in 11 parts, 2 for each son and one for each daughter.  Only 6 parts: probably Jacob, Teunis, Maria, Catherine, are certain, but John C., Christopher, and the wife of John Whitlock, who entered into a number of land transactions, (either Geertje or Elizabeth) are likely the other 5 shares.

His son, Johannes4 married Ann Heyer[19] with license dated 13 Jan 1756 [19a] and had two children (baptisms at Freehold)[20]:
1)      Teunis5, bap. 09 Aug 1757;
2)      Annetje, bap. 14 May 1758.

His son, Alexander4, married Catherine Warne, not Jannetje Heyer,[21] on 28 May 1757.[22]  They probably had two children:
1)   Aeltje5, bap 10 Aug 1760.[22a]  The mother is listed as Jannetje Heyer, but there is no evidence of a second Alexander Van Pelt in the area at this time and the witness, Aeltje Bennet, was the wife of Christopher Van Pelt, Alexander's brother.  I am assuming Jannetje Heyer, wife of , was actually a witness, not the mother.  Given the naming and timing of the children of Jan Van Pelter and Jannetje Heyer, I do not think the father's name in this baptismal record should be Jan, though that is a possibility.
2)     Maria5, bap. 29 May 1762, the mother listed as Catherine Warne;[23]

His son, Peter4, married Neeltje Vanderbilt[24] and died before 11 Jan 1790[25] at Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  They had five children (baptisms at Freehold)[26]:
1)      Hendrick5, bap. 30 Aug 1761, will proved 17 Jun 1822,[26a] married Sarah Roberts.
2)      Geertje, bap. 24 Apr 1763;
3)      Teunis, bap. 23 Jun 1765;
4)   John P., b 3 Aug 1767, will proved 15 Dec 1845, [26b] married Ida Vanderbilt.
4)      Peter, born 05 Jun 1772,[27] died 8 Dec 1823, married Mary Heyer;
5)      Neeltje, bap. 08 Mar 1778.

His son, Wynant4, married Mary Heyer with a New York license dated 30 Jun 1763,[28] where she is noted as being of New Jersey.  Johannes Bergen, one of the executors of his father’s will, was the fellowbondsman.  He died before 7 Jun 1804 in Brooklyn, NY, when his heirs signed letters of agreement regarding his estate.[29]  They were:
1)      Henry5, not married in 1804;
2)      Teunis, married Maria, died before 5 Jan 1837 in Brooklyn, NY;[30]
3)      Winant, married Magdalena;
4)      Christopher, married Sophia;
5)      Walter, married Lydia.

The Family of Alexander3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1)

Alexander3 is not mentioned by Smith.[31]  He appears to be living with his parents in the 1731 census of Brooklyn, NY.[32]  He moved to Montgomery Twp., Somerset Co., NJ by 1753 where he is listed next to his brother, Johannes,[33] in the listing of Freeholders in Western Precinct, Somerset Co., NJ that year.[34]  He married a woman named Adriantje and had at least five children:
1)      Maria, bap 13 Apr 1735;[35]
2)      Neeltje, born about 1737, married Martin Van Nortwyck in Somerset Co., NJ, with license dated 24 Jul 1755.[36] They had five children:
a.       Alexander, bap 29 Aug 1756,[37] named after his maternal grandfather;
b.      Adriantje, bap 3 Aug 1760,[38] named after her maternal grandmother;
c.       Simeon, born 13 Jan 1766, died 17 Aug 1842 in Tompkins Co., NY,[39] married (1) Rebecca Hendrickson, married (2) Sarah Giles, named after his paternal grandfather;
d.      Martin, named after his father;
e.       Neeltje, bap 26 Sep 1779,[40] named after her mother.
3)      Margaret, bap 01 May 1740;[41]
4)      Walter, bap 01 May 1740;
5)      Garret, bap 07 Oct 1743, died before 4 Feb 1805 in Brunswick Twp., Rensselaer Co., NY, [42] married Mary Nephew[43] (not Garret Lane/Van Pelt as listed by Smith)[44] and had six children:
a.       Alexander, born circa 1768, married Hannah Anderson;
b.      Walter, born about 1778, married Submit Baxter;
c.       Daniel, born circa 1770, married Anna Barnhart;
d.      Sarah, born circa 1772;
e.       Hannah, born 08 Jan 1777, married Elias Welton;
f.       Polly, born about 1780.

Alexanderprobably married second Jane Gano of Hunterdon, NJ with license[44a] dated 06 May 1751.  He died before 30 Jul 1766 in Somerset Co., NJ, when letters of administration[44b] were issued to his widow, Jane.  The fellowbondsman was Martin Van Nortwyck, husband of Neeltje Van Pelt, daughter of Alexander and his wife, Adriantje.

The Family of Johannes3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1)

Wouter’s eldest son was Teunis, bap. 30 Oct 1695,[45] so his son, Johannes, bap 08 Jun 1687,[46] must have died young.   He was born some time after 1696, but probably about 1701 or later assuming Wouter named his children in his will by sex, by age, Johannes appearing after Alexander and Peter.  He moved to Montgomery Twp., Somerset Co., NJ before 18 Apr 1748 when he witnesses a deed for property in Rocky Hill, Montgomery Twp.[47]  He is listed next to his brother, Alexander,[48] in the listing of Freeholders in Western Precinct, Somerset Co., NJ in 1753.[49]  Western Precinct was an earlier name for Montgomery Twp.  Another name for parts of the township was Sowerland, an ill-defined area around Sourland Mountain, partly in Somerset, Hunterdon and (later) Mercer counties, NJ.  It was used often used of the area around Harlingen, Montgomery Twp., Somerset Co., NJ.  His wife’s name was Maria.

Johannes3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1) left a will,[50] written on 2/5/1787 in Sowerland,[51] Somerset, NJ, that was proved 03 Sep 1790.  It does not mention a wife, but it does mention his daughter, Annetje, and her son, Aert Sutphen; his daughter, Maria, wife of John Croy (Cray according to Smith)[52], and their four children; his son, Johannes; his son, Christopher (not mentioned by Smith) and land he purchased from Hendrick Van Pelt on behalf of his sons.

Johannes’ eldest son, Johannes.4 was born about 1717 and married first a woman named Margaret.[53]  They had another son, Arthur5, baptized 04 Nov 1764.[54]  No further trace of him has been found, but his brother, Reuben5, had a son named Arthur, presumably after his uncle.

Johannes3 probably had another son, Hendrick4, mentioned in his will as someone he had purchased land from on behalf of his sons.  He is probably the Hendrick Van Pelt of Western Precinct, Somerset Co., NJ who died intestate before 27 Jun 1786 when letters of administration were issued to John Van Pelt (presumably his father or brother), with Christopher Van Pelt (presumably his brother) as the fellowbondsman.  Since he predeceased his father, probably without heirs as no wife is given letters of administration, he is not mentioned as his son in Johannes’ will.

Several baptismal records, all in the area of Montgomery Twp. suggest that Johannes3 married second Catherine Van Liew, who was the mother of many of his children.  Catherine was the daughter of John Van Liew and Catherine Van Cleef, named as Katherine Van Pelt in her father’s will,[55] written in 1767.

Johannes’ son, Hendrick4, presumably the Hendrick who died in 1786, was baptized on 19 Jul 1747 at Sowerland, the parents being Johannes Van Pelt and Catherine Van Liew.[56]

His son, Christopher4, is probably the son of Johannes Van Pelt and Catryna baptized on 1 Jul 1750.[57]  He married Elizabeth Ten Broeck[58] and had six children (baptized at Harlingen)[59]:
1)      John,[60] named after his paternal grandfather.
2)      James Longstreet5, bap 30 Oct 1791, named after Elizabeth’s first husband;
3)      Jacob, named after his maternal uncle, bap 24 Nov 1793;
4)      Catherine,[61] named after her paternal grandmother, born about 1795;
5)      Abraham, named after his maternal uncle, born 14 Sep 1798;
6)      Henry, named after his paternal uncle, born 08 Nov 1801.
By her previous marriage Elizabeth had a son, Cornelius, named after his maternal grandfather, a son, Aaron, named after his paternal uncle, and a daughter, Helen, named after her maternal aunt.

Smith places this Christopher as the son of Jan4 Van Pelt (Teunis3, Wouter2, Teunis1) and Jannetje Heyer,[62] however, that is very unlikely.  Baptismal records for the other children of Jan and Jannetje have been found, but not Christopher.  That family lived in Monmouth Co., NJ, not Somerset Co., NJ where Elizabeth lived.  Christopher and Elizabeth had a daughter named Catherine, after her presumed paternal grandmother, but not a daughter named Geertje.  The probate record of Jan Van Pelt[63]  states that administration was granted to his eldest son, William, who was baptized in 1763.[64]  Their daughter, Geertje, was baptized in 1765,[65] so the earliest a son Christopher would have been born would be about 1766, eleven years after his supposed wife, Elizabeth, was born, again, quite unlikely.

His daughter, Annetje4, is probably the daughter of Johannes Van Pelt and Ceti baptized on 03 Sep 1753 at the RDC of Harlingen.[66]  Though unusual, Ceti appears to be a form of Kathy, being used for Catherine DeRiemer at the baptism of her son, Albert Voorhees at the same church earlier on 29 Apr 1753.[67]  Annetje4 married Richard Sutphen with license dated 03 Oct 1773.[68]  They had five children (baptisms at RDC of Harlingen)[69]:
1)      Arthur5, bap 08 May 1774, named after his paternal grandfather, Aert in his grandfather’s will;
2)      Catherine, bap 31 Dec 1775, named after her maternal grandmother? (see later);
3)      James, born about 1777, married Rebecca Salter;
4)      John, born 22 May 1785, named after his maternal grandfather;
5)      Nelly, bap 14 Oct 1787;

The mother of his daughter, Maria4, is uncertain since little is known of her family.  Maria was probably born about 1745, given the baptismal date of her oldest known child.  She married John Cray/Kray.  They had four children (baptisms at Harlingen)[70]:
1) Annetje, bap 27 Oct 1765;
2) John, bap 28 Jun 1767, died 10 Sep 1849, married Elizabeth Kirby;[71]
3) Christopher, born about 1770, married Catherine Ellison;[72]
4) Unknown, known from Johannes’ will.
A John Kray is listed in the Western Precinct, Somerset Co., NJ, tax list for 1784-1789, and John Kray, Jr. in 1789.[73]

Though the descent from Johannes3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1) appears correct, there may be an extra generation between him and Reuben5 Van Pelt (Johannes4, Johannes3, Wouter2, Teunis1).  Given his later birth date, it seems likely that Johannes3 and Johannes4 are the same person, marrying Catherine Van Liew, baptized in 1712,[74] as his second wife, and that he was the Johannes Van Pelt who died in 1788 at age 71.  The will of that Johannes does not mention a son named Reuben, so it seems likely Reuben was the grandson of Johnannes3/4, by his own son, Johannes5, named in his will.  This change is uncertain, but is noted here for further research.

The Family of Mary3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1)

Wouter’s daughter, Mary3, did not marry Adrian Bennet.[75]  Nothing further is known of her beyond her mention in her father’s will of 1728.[76]  She was deceased by 1745, probably without heirs as she is not mentioned with her other siblings in the will of her cousin, Christopher Schaers, in 1745.[77]

The Family of Margaret3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1)

It was her sister, Margaret3, who married Adrian Bennet as shown in the baptism of their daughter, Margaret.[78]  Margaret herself is not mentioned in her father’s will, so she was probably deceased by 1728,[79] but her daughter, Margaret4, wife of Jacob Bergen, is mentioned in the will of Christopher Schaers.

The Family of Elizabeth3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1)

Elizabeth3 did not marry Peter Wyckoff as supposed by Smith.[80]  She had died, probably without heirs, by 1745 as neither she nor her children are mentioned in the will of Christopher Schaers.  Peter Wyckoff married Elizabeth3 Van Pelt (Aert2, Teunis1), supported by the naming of their five eldest children: Cornelius, Arthur, Neeltje, Peter, and Geertje after their grandparents and father.

The Family of Jacomyntje3 Van Pelt (Wouter2, Teunis1)

Jacomyntje3 and Samuel Berry[81] were married on 10 Jan 1744 at the RDC of Flatbush, NY.[82]  They had at least two other children, Wouter and Mary (wife of Patrick Hackett), mentioned in his will[83] of 24 Feb 1766.  Samuel is not mentioned and he is presumed to have died young as Wouter is mentioned as his eldest son.  Jacomyntje is also mentioned.
