Tunis Van Pelt of Rockingham, VA

 Tunis Van Pelt of Rockingham, VA

Tunis Van Pelt migrated from New Jersey to Augusta (later Rockingham, formed from Augusta County, VA in 1778[1]) County, VA, before 1761 as he appears in the record of a petition for a road there on 1 Jan 1761.[2]  However, little has been known of his earlier life in New Jersey.  Records of his daughter, Alsey/Elsje, wife of Holton Muncy,[3] have helped clarify some of that and suggest areas of further research into the family.

It is sometimes suggested that Tunis Van Pelt married Mary Voorhees, daughter of Roelof Voorhees and Neeltje Schenck, but this is not the case.[4]  She married Peter Van Pelt, son of Teunis and Jannetje Van Pelt.[5]

Tunis married (1) a woman named Grietje/Margaret.  They had three children baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Readington, Somerset Co., NJ (hereinafter Readington)[6]:
1)    Agnes, baptized 02 Aug 1752;
2)    Peter, baptized 18 Jul 1756; and
3)    Elsje, baptized 14 Oct 1759.
The baptism of their last child in 1759 is a little over one year before Tunis signed the petition for the road in Rockingham, VA.

After moving to Rockingham, he married (2) Margaret, widow of Peter Bowman by 17 Feb 1763, when she was appointed as the administrator of her husband’s estate[7] and is named as Margaret Van Pelt.  Tunis was involved in a suit with Samuel Hutton in Feb 1763.[8]  Cornelius Bowman was involved in a suit which mentions his sons, George and Peter, and the widow of Peter Bowman, Margaret, now Van Pelt, presumably Cornelius’ mother.[9]  A second petition for the road was made on 2 Jan 1767, this time signed by James Van Pelt.[10]  The original should be consulted as it seems likely that James is a mistranscription of Tunis.  Tunis is mentioned in the Processioners Returns of 1767-1768.[11]  He is included in the list of Daniel Smith’s list of Supernumeraries in 1773.[12]  A deed from Tunis Van Pelt to Jacob Lincoln in noted in court records[13] in Aug 1778.  A survey was done for him for land in Rockingham Co., VA, bordering Linville Creek on 26 Apr 1780.[14]  The last year Tunis appears in the personal property tax lists is in 1783.[15]  A survey[16] was done for Peter Van Pelt on 6 Apr 1786 for land adjoining Tunis Van Pelt.  He is not included in the Tenth Legion Tithables of 1792,[17] which is stated to be a listing of all males over the age of 16.  Peter Van Pelt is mentioned in the list.  Margaret Van Pelt made an attestation in a marriage record of 1787.[18]

Margaret, second wife of Teunis, is said to be the daughter Peter and Deborah Scholl baptized on 03 Apr 1717 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Raritan, NJ.[19]  Peter Bowman was the son of Cornelius Bowman and Annetje Staats, baptized on 14 Nov 1704 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn, NY.[20]  Peter Bouwman and Margaret Scholl had at least three children:
1)    Cornelius, born about 1737, named after his paternal grandfather;
2)    Deborah, baptized 08 Mar 1740/41 at Readington,
[21] named after her maternal grandmother; and
3)    Annetje, baptized 27 Nov 1748 at Readington,
[22] named after her paternal grandmother.
The Bowman’s location in Readington suggests the Bowman and Van Pelt families may have been acquainted in New Jersey, supporting their shared migration path.

Alice/Alsey Layne married Holton Muncy on 4 Mar 1776.[23]  Her parents were Tunis Layne and Margaret Van Pelt.[24]  Her “parents” were almost certainly the couple discussed earlier, Tunis Van Pelt (a branch of the Lane family) and his first wife, Margaret.  She was the Elsje, daughter of Tunis and Grietje, mentioned earlier, baptized on 14 Oct 1759 at Readington.  Alice and Holton were of Rockingham Co., VA on 6 Sep 1779 when they sold land to Abraham Lincoln.[25]  Their children were:[26]
1)    Nancy, b 1778;
2)    Tunis, b 1781;
3)    Mary, b 1783;
4)    Samuel, b 1786;
5)    Abigail, b 1790;
6)    Jacob, b 1793;
7)    Lomona, b 1795;
8)    Elizabeth, b 1797;
9)    Skidmore, b 1799;
10)  Jemima, b 1801;
11)  Rhoda, b 1805.

Peter2 Van Pelt of Rockingham, VA, was the Peter, son of Tunis and Grietje, mentioned earlier, baptized on 18 Jul 1756 at Readington.  He entered military service in 1777 Augusta (later Rockingham) County, VA.
[27]  He married a woman named Agnes on 13 Mar 1778.  He died 4 Apr 1831 in Rockingham Co. VA.  His widow, Agnes, applied for a pension in 1837 when she was 76, living with her fourth child.  Agnes died on 8/25/1840.  The 1840 census of Rockingham, VA shows she was living with Jacob Van Pelt, aged 77.[28]  Her son, Benjamin, is listed in her pension record.[28a]  Peter’s baptism in 1756 is consistent with his entering military service in 1777.

A record proving all the children of Peter2 and Agnes Van Pelt has not been found, but as mentioned in his pension record, he had at least four children (Jacob being the fourth).  They probably include the following:

1)   Margaret3, born about 1785,[29] married 18 Feb 1817 David Flick,[30] named after her paternal grandmother (see later);

2)   Benjamin, born about 1786, died 21 Apr 1862,[31] married 02 Nov 1808 Mary Ragan;[32]

3)   William, born about 1788, died before 1841,[33] married 10 Jun 1819 Mary Rogers;[34]

4)   Jacob, born about 1789,[35] died 10 May 1867,[36] married 25 Sep 1810 Susan Simmers,[37] married (2) Arthela Lampkins on 7 Aug 1829.[38]

5)   Tunis, born about 1801,[39] died 1885,[40] married Eleanor Flick,[41] named after his paternal grandfather.

MargaretVan Pelt and David Flick appear to have had four sons and four daughters,[42] but the only known child is William Morgan, born about 1818,[43] though his tombstone says he was born 20 Apr 1817.[44]  He was involved in a Chancery Court case in Rockingham, VA in 1867 in which his wife, Harriet, is mentioned and Andrew Jackson Van Pelt was mentioned as a witness.[45]  He died on 26 Jan 1879 in Rockingham, VA.

Benjamin3 served in the War of 1812.[46]  The 1810 through 1830 census records suggest that Benjamin and Mary had four sons and four daughters.  Three of their children lived with them in the 1850 census (Daniel, James and Caroline):[47]

1)   Daughter, born about 1809;[48]

2)   Daughter, born about 1811;[49]

3)   probably Andrew Jackson Van Pelt, born about 1815, died before the 1880 census in Rockingham, VA,[50] married Lucinda Sheltman 24 Dec 1839 in Rockbridge, VA.[51]

4)   Daniel, born about 1817,[52] he never married;

5)   Daughter, born about 1821;[53]

6)   James, born about 1823, appears in the tithables in 1845,[54] probably married a woman named Susan and died about 1848 when he no longer appears in the tithables but she does.[55] She was born about 1823, but if correct, they did not have any children together;[56]

7)   Caroline, born about 1826, died 10 Jan 1865, married Patterson Greiner about 1860;[57]

8)   Son, born about 1828.

Williamand Mary had two children in the 1840 census[58] and at least one other:

1)    William, born about 1820, with whom Mary was living in 1850,[59] married Elizabeth Frank on 26 Aug 1842;[60]

2)    Alexander M, born about 1830, married Nannie H. Farrar on 3 Aug 1863 in Prince Edward Co. VA, no further trace;[61]

3)    Margaret Jane, born 12 Nov 1831, died on 13 Nov 1912,[62] married Robert Gains with whom Mary was living in 1860.[63]

It is likely they had other children, including Samuel, Jesse and Virginia, whom I have not been able to place otherwise.

Jacoband his first wife, Susan, had at least five children,[64] including:[65]

1)    John4, born about 1811,[66] married Mary Ann Miller, and sold land in Rockingham, VA in 1842,[67] and appear in the 1850 census of Bath, VA[68] and the 1880 census of Ritchie, WV.[69]

2)    James, born about 1813, appears in the tithables list by 1835,[70] died in Harrisonburg on 19 Oct 1888,[71] married Sarah Nicewander.[72]

3)    Daughter, born about 1815;[73]

4)    David, born 20 May 1817; died 29 Aug 1869[74] and married Maria Rankin on 10 Sep 1839;[75]

5)    William, born about 1819,[76] married Elizabeth Messick on 1 Jan 1847.[77]

Jacoband his second wife, Arthela, had about six children,[78] including:[79]

6)    Henry4, born 8 Nov 1827, died 13 Sep 1904,[80] married Julia Catherine Berry on 03 Aug 1847;[81]

7)    Andrew Jackson, born Feb 1828,[82] married Mary Jane Knisley 02 Aug 1849,[83] married (2) Mary C. Goldzin (maiden name unknown) on 15 Oct 1882;[84]

8)    Ann, born about 1831;[85]

9)    Robert, born about 1837, married Eliza Mutherspaw on 08 Mar 1857;[86]

10)  Martin, born about 1839, married Harriet Owens;[87]

11)  Morgan, born about 1841.

Teunisand Eleanor Flick had twelve children:[88]
1)    Sarah4, born about 1830;
2)    Elizabeth, born about 1832;
3)    Margaret, born about 1832;
[89]
4)    Henry, born about 1834;
5)    Hannah, born about 1837;
6)    James, born about 1839;
7)    Susan, born about 1841;
8)    Mary, born about 1843;
9)    Hetty, born about 1845;
10)  William, born about 1847;
11)  Isaac, born about 1849;
12)  Virginia, born about 1855.
[90]

There are five Van Pelts of Rockingham I have not been able to place in this family.  First, Virginia J. Van Pelt.  She married Robert Smith in July 1845.[91]  The family is listed in the 1850 census of Rockingham, her being 29, with three children:[92]
1)    Mary E, born about 1846;
2)    Abrametta, born about 1848; and
3)    Sallie M, born about 1850.
[93]
Virginia apparently died before 1860 as she does not appear in the census for that year.
[94]

Second, Samuel Van Pelt married Margaret W. Hannah on 17 Dec 1846 in Rockingham.[95]  He first appears in the tithable lists in 1846.[96]  The 1850 census of Rockingham show he and his wife were born in VA about 1826 with two children:[97]
1)    Mary, born about 1848;
2)    Fannie, born about Feb 1850.
It is likely his wife died by 1856 when she does not enter into a sale of land with him.  No further trace.

Third, Jesse Van Pelt appears in the tax lists of Rockingham 1847-1851.[98]  He was born about 1825, moved to Rockbridge, VA by 1860, married a woman named Sarah A., and had a child named Fannie about 1858.[99]  He apparently married second a woman named Mary A. by 1870 and had another son born about 1869.[100]  He served in the Confederate Army[101] and died at the Rockbridge Co. Poor Farm on 19 Dec 1891.

Fourth, Alexander M. Van Pelt, born about 1822 in Rockingham, VA [101a], married Elizabeth McCray on 18 Oct 1845 in Pendleton, VA (now WV) [101b].  He enlisted at Monterey in the Confederate Army on 11 May 1861.  He was discharged on 11 Dec 1863 with an advanced case of phthisis pulmonalisim.  He had the following children:
1)    St. Clair Harrison, b. abt. 1846, Pendleton, WV, d. aft. 1880;
2)    William Henry, b. abt. 1847 Highland, VA
, m (1) 2 Feb 1867 Nancy Ann McDonald in Randolph, WV, m (2) Laura Snyder on 06 Jun 1887 in Randolph, WV;
3)    Robert A., b. abt. 1850 Highland, VA, m Rachel White on 30 Apr 1870;
4)    Joseph Marion., b. abt. 1852 Highland, VA, m Mary Erritte on 14 Dec 1880 in Gallia, OH;
5)    John Wesley, b. 9 Jul 1854, Highland, VA, m Elizabeth Davis;
6)    James Buchanon, b. 15 Oct. 1856, Highland, VA
, m. Abbie Mitchell 16 Nov 1881, Randolph WV;
7)    Mary Margaret, b. abt. 1858, Highland, VA, m Azariah White on 19 Jun 1883 in Randolph, WV; and
8)    Andrew Jackson, b 14 Oct 1861 Highland, VA
, m Mary A Baker on 12 Nov 1882 in Coles, IN.
Elizabeth married 2nd Matthew White on 19 Nov 1865 in Randolph, WV.

Finally, John Van Pelt appears in the 1850 census of Rockingham, VA, age 25, wife, Jane, and two children:[102]
1)     Harrison, born about 1843;
2)     Hannah C., born about Feb 1850.

I did not find the family in any subsequent census records.  A Harrison Van Pelt, age 16 was living with the family of Michael Cline in Rockingham, VA in the 1860 census.[103]  No further trace.

It is possible that other records of Augusta Co., VA, will give evidence of more children of Teunis Van Pelt and his first wife, Margaret.  In particular, it is hoped that the Linville Creek Baptist Church records will include references to an Agnes “Layne” Van Pelt, sister of Peter and Elsje.

Another possible relative is John Van Pelt, listed in the 1782 tax list of Washington Co., VA.[104]  He is probably the same John Van Pelt who sold land on Little Cedar Creek in Russell Co., VA (formed from Washington Co., VA in 1786) in 1791.[105]  Little Cedar Creek is northwest of Lebanon, Russell Co., VA.[106]  Holton Muncy, husband of Alsey Van Pelt, was at Elk Garden on 4 Nov 1774,[107] which is about 5 miles from the mouth of Little Cedar Creek.  Perhaps they migrated together?  John is listed in the Russell Co., VA, Personal Property Tax Lists for the Upper District from 1791 through 1803, including in 1799 with 5 tithables, i.e. white males over 16.  Euricus Van Pelt, presumably his son, appears in the 1802 and 1803 lists.  Court records give the names of three of his sons: Euricus, Jesse and John, Jr:

Court, November 22, 1796.
P330 - Presentment against John Vanpelt, Urius [Euricus?] Vanpelt & John Vanpelt, Jr for sabbath breaking at different times, oath of Euricus Anderson

Court, Feb 2, 1808
P686 - Bill of sale from John Vanpelt, Jr to John Vanpelt, Sr., oath of Jesse Vanpelt, recorded.
