Notes on the Descendants of Jannetje, daughter of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt
This post is a follow-up of an earlier one entitled “Notes on the Family
of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland.”
That post provided an overview of the research on the family. It included comments and corrections on the family
of Matthias Lane and several of his supposed children.
The excellent article, “Teuntje Teunis, and Her Descendants, Tracing
the Families of Van Huyse, Van Schaick, De Nys and Hellakers,” by Howard S. F. Randolph.[1] will form
the basis of the discussion of this family.
Almost all of the comments here will be additions.
Jannetje2 Lane (Matthias1 Lanen) married Teunis Idens supposedly
about 1664.[2] Randolph frequently mentions the number of grandchildren
they had by each child, but does not name them.
They have been added to the Genealogical Summary below.
Jannetje’s daughter, Teuntje3 Teunis and her husband, Hermanus Van Gelder, had another daughter, not included
by Randolph, named Annetyje, baptized 02 Dec 1691,[3]
died young. Teuntje3’s son, Johannes4, had an additional
child, detailed below.
Jannetje’s daughter, Rebecca3 Teunis. and her husband, Abraham De La Montagne, had another son,
not mentioned by Randolph, named Joseph4 Montagne (after his maternal uncle, Joost), b. abt. 1701, NY; d. bef.
14 Apr 1788, Roxbury, Morris, NJ.[4] Their children, including those named after their
four grandparents, are detailed below.
Rebecca’s son, Teunis4 Montagne, was married three times. His second wife was Elizabeth and
they had a son, Jacobus5, baptized
at the Reformed Dutch Church of Raritan, NJ on 19 Sep 1731.[5] The witness was “the wife of Ide Mon.”, his brother
who lived in the area. Of the three unnamed
children of Teunis and his first wife, Geesje Bussing, mentioned by Randolph, I
have only been able to confirm one, Brechtje5, baptized on 01 May 1723.[6] One source lists an unknown son of Teunis and
Geesje as having been involved in the Bermuda trade and living there for a while.[7] I have not confirmed that family.
Rebecca’s son, Isaac4 Montagne married Rachel Kortrecht before 09 Apr 1727 when their daughter,
Rebecca5, was baptized
in NYC, NY,[8] the witnesses
being Abraham Montagne, the paternal grandfather, and Jelante Montanje wife of Bastiaan
Kortreg, the maternal grandmother. The child
was named after the paternal grandmother, Rebecca Teunis. Isaac and his wife served as witnesses for the
baptism of his nephew, Abraham Anderson/Van Albadi on 17 Jan 1739 in NYC, NY.[9] Isaac and Rachel were witnesses for their grandson,
Isaac, son of Pieter Peterson and Rebecca Montagne on 29 Mar 1747 in NYC, NY.[10] He was living at Turtle Bay, Manhattan, NY in
1738.[11] Isaac Montagne, husband of Rachel Kortrecht, is
normally thought to have been the son of Isaac3 Montagne (Jean2, Jean1) and Hester Van Voorst.[12] However, he was also thought to have moved to
New Jersey which the above records show he did not. Isaac, son of Isaac and Hester, was most likely
the husband of Neeltje Brouwer who had a son, Isaac, born on 06 Apr 1730, baptized
at Acquackanonk, NJ on 3 May 1730.[13]
Isaac4 and Rachel
probably had another daughter, Sarah. Sarah
married William Smith on 2 Nov 1754 in NYC, NY.[14] Their second daughter was named Rebecca, baptized
on 20 Aug 1758.[15] Rebecca Montagne and Pieter Peterson served as
the witnesses. Sarah Montagne and William
Smith served as witnesses for the baptism of Rachel, daughter of Rebecca Montagne
and Pieter Peterson on 28 Jul 1754,[16] shortly
before they were married.
Jannetje’s daughter, Sarah3 Teunis, married Myndert Burger Van Everen
as noted by Randolph.[17] However, Myndert’s mother was probably misidentified
as Elizabeth. More importantly, based on
circumstantial evidence, it appears that the wife of their son, Burger4,
was misidentified as Catherine Childe. Myndert’s
father, Burger Mynderts Van Everen, married Elsje Meyer, daughter of Martin Meyer
and Hendrickje Hermans[18]
before their son, Martin, was baptized 20 Sep 1685 at NYC, NY.[19] He was named after his maternal grandfather. Elsje Meyndersen was a witness for the baptism
of Gysbert, son of Claes Uytden Bogaert and Ruth Meyer[20]
on 8 Oct 1704,[21]
being the maternal aunt. At the baptism of
Sarah and Myndert’s son, Burger4, on 10 Dec 1704,[22]
the witnesses were Burger Meyndersen, the grandfather, and his wife, Elizabeth,
the grandmother. However, given the timing,
Myndert is the son of Elsje, not Elizabeth, the baptismal record probably being
in error.
Myndert Burger’s son, Martin
Van Everen, married Judith Holms 01 Feb 1717/18 at NYC, NY.[23] Their son, Burger, was baptized 13 Nov 1718.[24] He was the Burger who married Catherine Childe
on 19 Aug 1741.[25] She was the daughter of Francis Childe and Cornelia
Viele, baptized on 15 Aug 1722.[26] They had at least three children:
1)
Cornelia, bap. 18 Jun 1743, Francis Childe
and Cornelia Viele as the witnesses, named after her maternal grandmother;
2)
Martinus, bap. 03 Jul 1748, named after
his paternal grandfather;
3)
Francis, bap. 03 Jun 1750, named after
his maternal grandfather.
Sarah and Myndert’s son, Burger4, married Femmetje Westervelt 30 Jun 1738 at Schraalenburg, NJ.[27] She was the daughter of Andries Westervelt and
Dirckje Verdon, baptized on 13 Jul 1718.[28] Burger and his sister, Elsje, served as witnesses
for two of their sister’s children, Jannetje Van Everen, wife of Abraham Parsel.[29] Five of Burger’s children have baptismal records,
the other four being assumed based on their serving as witnesses for each other’s
children. They were:
1)
Femmetje5, baptized 5 Aug 1739 at Schraalenburg,
NJ,[30] named after
her mother;
2)
Myndert, baptized 20 Sep 1741 NYC, NY,[31]
named after his paternal grandfather;
3)
Sarah, baptized 16 Oct 1743 at Tappan,
NY,[32]
named after her paternal grandmother;
4)
Rachel, born about 1747;
5)
Ide, born about 1751, named after his
paternal uncle;
6)
Andries, born about 1753, named after
his maternal grandfather;
7)
Jannetje, born about 1755, named after
her paternal aunt;
8)
Maria, baptized 15 Mar 1761;[33]
and
9)
William, baptized 15 Mar 1761.
Catalyntje3 and Joris
Dyckman’s son, Cornelius4, did not
marry (2) Elizabeth Gendin as Randolph[34] supposed. That Cornelius is recorded as not having been
previously married when he married Elizabeth.[35] The husband of Elizabeth Gendin was Cornelius4 Dyckman (Dirck3, Cornelius2, Johannes1).[36]
Catalyntje3 and Joris Dyckman’s son, Johannes4, did not marry Angel Barcaux as Randolph[37] supposed. He married Rebecca Buys,[38]daughter
of Jan Buys and Annteje De La Montagne, on 04 May 1750.[39] It was Jan4 Dyckman (Nicholas3,
Cornelius2, Johannes1) who married Engeltje, daughter
of Isaac Bragaw[40] and Hilletje
Bas.[41]
