The Children of Tunis, son of Lawrence Updike and Agnes Post

The Children of Tunis3, son of Lawrence2 (Johannes1 Updike) and Agnes Post

Charles Wilson Opdyke in the “Op Dyck Genealogy”[1] identified several possible children of Tunis Updike, including other early Updikes he had not been able place elsewhere.  A possible wife of Tunis has been identified, along with her two children.  The parents of some of those possible children have been identified and additional information on their families found.

Tunis was probably born about 1713.  His sister, Catherine, born in 1709, married John Johnson.  They are buried in the Johnson Family Cemetery.[2]  His brother, Lawrence, was probably born about 1711.  Lawrence appears as “Lawrence Obdike, Jun. as servant to his father, Lawrance Obdike Sen. and by his command” in a suit against John Anderson in 1729.[3]  This implies that Lawrence, Jr. was not able to bring the suit directly, so not yet of legal age, i.e., 21.[4]  Near the end of 1730, Lawrence Updike, Jr. was a witness to an agreement to sell land at a town meeting of Maidenhead, NJ,[5] implying he was then able to serve as a witness, so age 14 or over.[6]  Though I am uncertain of the laws of New Jersey at that time, I believe he would have been born somewhere between 1709 and 1716.  Given Catherine’s birth year and the likelihood Lawrence was the third son (named after his father, while William and John were named after their grandfathers, and Tunis after his maternal uncle), he was likely born about 1713.

Tunis participated in a riot in Hunterdon County in 1748, for which he received a pardon.[7]  Though uncertain, he probably married a woman named Ann.  Her second husband was John Truax.[8]  The abstract of John's will[9] names his two daughters, Gertie, wife of John Updyck, and Sythe, wife of Abraham Truax, but from the will itself[10] it is clear they are daughters of his wife by a first marriage.  Her maiden name is said to have been Updyke,[11] but I am presuming it was her married name, not her maiden name.[12]  Ann was of Middlesex County, NJ, when she died before 15 Oct 1785 when letters of administration were issued to John Updike, Jr.

Abraham Truax and his wife, Lichy, of Monmouth Co., sold land in Windsor [Middlesex Co., NJ] along the Millstone River on 11 June 1765.[13]  The witnesses were Matthias Van Kirk [his brother-in-law] and John Updike, Jr. [his brother-in-law].  Assuming Lichy [Sythe] was at least 20 years old at the time, she would have been by before 1746, within the time frame to be a daughter of Tunis.  Abraham and Seytje had at least two children: Seytje, baptized on 19 Jul 1767;[14] and Lydia, baptized on 03 Jun 1771.  No further trace.

John Updike, Jr. and his wife Geertje, probably did not have any children.  See a future post for details on John Updike, Jr.

If the above is correct, John Truax’s will suggests that Tunis had only two children.  However, it is possible that her sons were omitted if they had already received a portion of Tunis’ estate.

One other possible marriage for Tunis is Sarah Price.  She is mentioned in the will of Solomon Price,[15] written on 26 Aug 1757 at Maidenhead, NJ, as his sister, Sarah Updike.  He mentions two unmarried sisters, but not his other married sisters.  This implies that Sarah was a widow.  Sarah probably died without heirs as she is not mentioned in the will[16] of her father, John Price, written at Maidenhead, NJ on 19 Apr 1773.  Given those circumstances, Sarah is more likely the wife of Lawrence Updike, Jr.  Lawrence Updike, Jr. is listed as the occupant, as well as his father, on some land owned by Daniel Coxe on 5/2/1736, so he lived long enough to have married.  However, he died without heirs before his father, Lawrence Updike, wrote his will[17] at Maidenhead, NJ on 10 Jun 1745.

Samuel Updike, supposed son of Tunis, and wife Sarah

Chales Opdyke cites four property records as his basis for Samuel Updike.[18]  In the record in 1820 he lists Samuel’s wife as Sarah.  However, a review of the mortgage record,[19] shows his wife’s name as Lanah, not Sarah, written three times.  Given the location in Montgomery township, Somerset Co., NJ,[20] this Samuel is most likely Samuel Johnson5 Updike (William4, John3, Lawrence2, Johannes1), husband of Helena Grover.

Jonathan S. Updike, supposed son of Tunis

He is probably the son of John Updike below.

John Updike, supposed son of Tunis, of Cherry Valley

John is almost certainly Johannes, son of Burgoon and Mary Updike, baptized on 14 Aug 1768,[21] overlooked in the Op Dyck Genealogy.  He died on 01 Aug 1831,[22] born in 1769.  His family appears under Jonathan Updike in the 1830 census of Montgomery township, Somerset County, NJ,[23] the township Cherry Valley is in.

I have based his family on the 1830 census of Ithaca Tompkins Co., a marriage record in the Ithaca Republican and the 1850 census of Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY.  This is in keeping to the family history recorded in the Op Dyck Genealogy, which suggests he moved out of the state.

Abraham Updike, supposed son of Tunis

I think it is likely that Abraham is the youngest son of William4 Updike (Albert3, Johhannes2, Louris1) and Nancy Carpenter.

1)   The Op Dyck Genealogy speculates about a connection between their descendants.[28]

2)   Settlement similarities: some of the sons of John Opdyke, including William and Isaac moved to Troy, Rensselaer Co., and Albany, NY.  According to the 1855 Census of Albion, Orleans, NY, Jacob Updike, son of Abraham, was born in Rensselaer, NY in 1801.  The family of Zachariah's mother, Margaret Rector, was from Rensselaer, NY.  The Op Dyck Genealogy says that Abraham was born in Coxsackie, NY, but I have not found any record before 1790 of Abraham's family in NY.

3)   Others of William and Nancy's children settled in NY near where Abraham's family lived.

4)   Abraham's oldest son was named William, presumably after his grandfather, and one of his three daughters was Nancy, possibly after her presumed grandmother.

5)   His sons included William, Samuel and John, all common names used by his supposed siblings, as noted in the Op Dyck Genealogy.  Hope had a son named Abraham.  Benjamin was probably named after his great uncle, Benjamin Opdycke.

6)   The change of the name from Opdyke to Updike occurred in both families, though this was common.

The listing of the children of William and Nancy in the Op Dyck genealogy is based on the recollections of their grandchildren.  Charles Opdyck mentions that some branches of the family had lost track of other parts.  If Abraham was the youngest and left home during the Revolutionary War and didn't return, he might have also been lost track of by the rest of the family.

Abraham was born between 1760-1770.
From the 1820 & 1840 census it appears that he did not have any children after 1820.  See his son Abraham.

I do not know when Annetje Delyne died, so I am not certain who was the mother of each of Abraham's children.  Only 9 children are listed in the 1810 census and no additional children are listed in the 1820 census.  The others likely died young or had left home before age 19.  It seems likely the children listed with dates below are those who were living with the family in 1810.
