Notes on the Descendants of Hendrick, son of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt

This post is a follow-up of an earlier one entitled “Notes on the Family of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland.”  That post provided an overview of the research on the family.  It included comments and corrections on the family of Matthias Lane and several of his supposed children.  The family as described Honeyman in “The Lane Families of Somerset County and Vicinity”.[1]

Hendrick Lane married Annetje Jacobs Tileman on 08 Sep 1679 in Flatbush, NY.[2]  Honeyman identified two of their children, Tileman and Matthias.  However, they had two other children, Teuntje, named after her maternal grandmother, and Joost.

Teuntje³ Lane (Hendrick², Matthys¹) was born circa 1687 and married Anthony Byvank on 20 Jan 1704/05 in NYC, NY.[3]  Though undocumented, her parents can be discerned from the naming of their children, the people who were witnesses for the baptisms of their children, and for those for whom they were the witnesses.[4]  Of the baptism of their children:

1)      Johannis, on 30 Nov 1705, named after his paternal grandfather;

2)      Anneke, on 28 Jan 1708, named after her maternal grandmother, the witnesses being her step-aunt, Aeltje Shaers, and her first husband, Benjamin Oldes;

3)      Hendricus, on 21 Dec 1709, named after his maternal grandfather;

4)      Anthony, on 19 Dec 1713, witnesses were Teuntje Idens, being his maternal first cousin, and her husband;

5)      Belitje, on 11 Sep 1715, named after her paternal grandmother.

Of those for whom they were witnesses:

6)      Benjamin, son of Aeltje Schaers and Benjamin Oldes, on 30 Nov 1705, witness was Anthony Byvank;

7)      Theunis, son of Meindert Burger and Sarah Idens, on 10 Dec 1710, witnesses were Teuntje Lane, first cousin of Sarah, and her husband;

8)      Hendrick, son of Marinus Roelofse and Dina Idens, on 27 Aug 1712, witnesses were Teuntje Lane, first cousin of Dina, and her husband;

9)      Hendricus, son of Matthias Lane and Cornelia Hendricks, on 3 Feb 1714, witnesses were Teuntje Lane, sister of Matthias, and her husband;

10)  Catharina, daughter of Gerrit Keteltas and Catharina Van Dyck, on 24 Oct 1716, witnesses were Teuntje Lane, first cousin of Catherine, and her husband.

Only one record clearly of Joost³ Lane has been found.  He married Geertje Romeyn and had a daughter, Geertje, baptized on 01 Jun 1711 in NYC, NY.[5]  The witnesses for her baptism were Aeltje Schaers, presumed step-sister of Joost, and her husband.  Though some of the grandchildren of Gysbert² Lane (Matthys¹) were baptized at NYC, NY, those families moved to other locations by 1711, so this is the best placement of Joost.  He may have moved to Middilesex, NJ as there is a Joseph Lane (Vicutualler) as a defendant is a Supreme Court Case brought him by John Smith for debt in 1739.[6]  Alternately, he could be the Joseph Lane who appears in the list of freeholders in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ in 1748, but not 1755.[7]  No further trace.

The baptismal record of Tileman³ Lane (Hendrick², Matthys¹) was given by Honeyman, but no further record of him has been found.  He presumably died young.

Matthias³ Lane was baptized on 13 May 1683 in Brooklyn, NY.[8]  He was probably living with his uncle, Gysbert, in the 1698 census of New Utrecht, Kings Co., NY.[9]  Gysbert was appointed as one of the guardians of the children of Hendrick Lane before 7 Nov 1693 as he signs the agreement for the distribution of Hendrick’s estate.[10]  A review of the family listings shows the children are listed by sex by age.  In the case of Gysbert Tyssen [Lane], the listing is confusing as the first two children are named Cornelius, while the last male child is Tys.  With the family of Henrick Matysen [Smock], a Jan and Aertje are listed after his daughters.  These are the children of his brother-in-law, Jan Harmens.  Though uncertain, this implies that the two first two males in Gysbert’s family are actually his sons Matthias and Cornelius (his eldest son, Adrian, is listed separately) and the last male, Tys, is his nephew. 

As was seen in the baptismal records above, Mathias Lane married Cornelia Hendricks, daughter of Hendricks Jansen and Maria Jansen, baptized on 01 Feb 1684/85.[11]  Hendrick and Maria were the witnesses for Mathias’ son, Aderjanes⁴, baptized 22 Oct 1718 at the Reformed Dutch of Raritan, Somerset Co., NJ.[12]  Honeyman had tentatively placed him as a son of Adrian² Lane (Matthys¹) and Martyntje Smack,[13] not having noticed his baptismal record.  Mathias probably had another daughter, Mary⁴, born about 1729, who married Aaron Boerum with license dated 04 Dec 1749 in Somerset Co., NJ,[14]  Mary is also tentatively listed by Honeyman as a daughter of Adrian² Lane (Matthys¹).  I have placed her here as she may have been named after her maternal grandmother, Maria Jansen.

Hendrick’s second wife was Mary[15], daughter of William Adriaense Bennet, as Honeyman had supposed.  They had one daughter together, not mentioned by Honeyman.  Their daughter, Mayke, was baptized 23 Apr 1693 at Brooklyn, NY, the witnesses being Wouther Van Pelt [Hendrick’s first cousin] and Maria Maria Johannes.  Mayke married William Jans Bennet before their only known child, Mary, was baptized on 11 Jun 1718 at NYC, NY.[16]  The witnesses were Aaltje Staff [Schaers, Mayke’s cousin] and her second husband, John Staff.[17]  No further trace.

1.  HENDRICK² LANE (MATTHYS¹) was born circa 1651 in Buurmalsem, Gelderland, and died bef. 23 Nov 1693 in Kings Co., NY¹.  He married (1) ANNETJE JACOBS TILEMAN 08 Sep 1679 in DRC of Flatbush, Kings, NY, daughter of TILEMAN VAN DER MEYER and TEUNTJE STRAETSMAN.  She was born circa 1653 in Fort Margriete, Brazil.  He married (2) MARY WILLEMSE BENNET 25 Apr 1690, daughter of WILLIAM BENNET and MARIA BADDIE.  She was baptized 09 Mar 1643/44 in New Amsterdam.

                   i.    TIELMAN⁶ LANE, baptized 12 Dec 1680, near Flatbush, NY.

2.               ii.    MATTHIAS LANE, baptized 13 May 1683, near Flatbush, NY.

4.               iv.    TEUNTJE LANE, b. circa 1687, NY; d. aft. 1734.

2.  MATTHIAS³ LANE (HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was baptized 13 May 1683 in near Flatbush, NY.  He married CORNELIA HENDRICKSEN, daughter of HENDRICK JANSEN and MARIE JANSEN.  She was baptized 01 Feb 1684/85 in near Flatbush, NY.

Honeyman places him as the s/o Adrian Thyssen Lane whom I do not think existed.

8.              iii.    MARY LANE, b. bet. 1722 - 1734; m. AARON BOERUM, 04 Dec 1749, Somerset Co., NJ²; baptized 18 May 1727, near Harlingen, NJ; d. aft. 1800.

 

3.  JOOST³ LANE (HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was born circa 1685 in NY, and died aft. 1711.  He married GEERTJE ROMEYN, daughter of CHRISTOFFEL ROMEYN and GEERTJE WYCKOFF.  She was born circa 1686 in NY.

                   i.    GEERTJE⁴ LANE, baptized 01 Jun 1711, near NYC, NY. 

4.  TEUNTJE³ LANE (HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was born circa 1687 in NY, and died before 3 Jan 1750 when her will[18] was proved.  She married ANTHONY BYVANK 20 Jan 1704/05 in Dutch Reformed Church of NYC, NY, son of JAN BYVANK and BELTTJE DUYCKING.  He was born circa 1678 in NY, and died bef. 22 May 1741 in NYC, NY when his will was proved.[19] 

Anthony’s will, written 21 Dec 1733, mentions his wife, Teuntie, and his children: John, Henricus, Anthony, Evert, Anake, wife of Francis Costagen, and Belitie.  Teuntje’s will, written on 21 Dec 1749, mentions her daughter, Annaca, wife of Francis Costigan, her sons Henry and Anthony and Evert, and Sarah, widow of her son John, deceased, and her six children, Anthony, Sarah, John, Hannah, William, and Evert.  She did not mention Belitje who presumably died without heirs.

5.  MAYKE³ LANE (HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was baptized 23 Apr 1693 in near Brooklyn, NY.  She married WILLIAM BENNET, son of JAN BENNET and AELTJE WYNANS.  He was born circa 1692 in NY.

                   i.    MAYKE⁴ BENNET, baptized 11 Jun 1718, near NYC, NY.

6.  HENDRICK⁴ LANE (MATTHIAS³, HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was baptized 03 Feb 1713/14 in near NYC, NY.[22]  He married UNKNOWN.

10.              i.    JACOB⁵ LANE, b. 05 Jul 1737, Raritan area, NJ.

11.             ii.    NEELTJE LANE, b. circa 1739, NJ.

12.            iii.    ISAAC LANE, b. circa 1743, NJ. 

7.  ADERJANES⁴ LANE (MATTHIAS³, HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was baptized 22 Oct 1718 in near Raritan, NJ.  Aderjanes married EILZABETH REYST.  

Children of ADERJANES LANE and EILZABETH REYST are:

                   i.    MATTHEW⁵ LANE, baptized 22 Apr 1746, at Reformed Dutch Church of Harlingen, Somerset Co., NJ.[23]

                  ii.    MARIA LANE, baptized 29 Sep 1748, Reformed Dutch Church of Readington, Hunterdon, NJ.[24]  

8.  MARY⁴ LANE (MATTHIAS³, HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was born bet. 1722 - 1734.  She married AARON BOERUM 04 Dec 1749 in Somerset Co., NJ, son of WILLIAM BOERUM and HANNAH CLAWSON.  He was baptized 18 May 1727 in near Harlingen, NJ,[25] and died aft. 1800.

                   i.    WILLIAM⁵ BOERUM, b. bet. 1750 - 1755, NJ.

                  ii.    AARON BOERUM, b. bet. 1760 - 1765.

                 iii.    JOHN BOERUM, b. bet. Aug 1765 - Jun 1766, Bucks Co., PA; m. TAMAR OLDAKER.

                  iv.    HANNAH BOERUM, b. circa 1767, Bucks Co., PA. 

9.  JOHANNES⁴ BYVANK (TEUNTJE³ LANE, HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was baptized 30 Nov 1705 in near NYC, NY.  He married SARAH HAVILAND, daughter of JOHN HAVILAND and SARAH BERGEN.  She was born circa 1707 in NY.

                   i.    ANTHONY⁵ BYVANK, baptized 03 Jul 1728, near NYC, NY.

                  ii.    JAN BYVANK, baptized 06 Sep 1732, near Jamaica, NY.[26]

10.  JACOB⁵ LANE (HENDRICK⁴, MATTHIAS³, HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was born 05 Jul 1737 in Raritan area, NJ.  He married ANNETJE CONKLIN 28 Jun 1770 in New Hackensack, Dutchess, NY, born circa 1754, probably the daughter of LAWRENCE CONKLIN and ANNETJE SHURRIG (she was the witness for the baptism of her presumed grandson, Lawrence).[27]  

My identification of Jacob’s parents is speculative, but is based on a cemetery record and his Revolutionary War Pension file:

1)       Jacob Lane from Raretans, NJ married in New Hackensack, NY, 28 June 1770 Annetje Concklin from Rumbout Precinct, NY.[28]

2)       Revolutionary War Pension file says he was born 5 Jul 1737 between Brunswick and Amboy in NY, he lived in Poughkeepsie NY and shortly after his service moved to Bucks Co., PA and then moved to Westmoreland Co., PA and about 1805 moved to Allegheny Co, PA and he appl there 25 Feb 1835.  Sol had m Hannah.....sol's son John was of Harmarville in July 1854.

11.  NEELTJE⁵ LANE (HENDRICK⁴, MATTHIAS³, HENDRICK², MATTHYS¹) was born circa 1739 in NJ.  She married PETER GERREBRANTS 14 Aug 1761 in NY,[29] son of CORNELIUS GERREBRANTS and JANNETJE SPIER.  He was born circa 1737 in NJ.

He may be the Isaac Lane in the Aug 1785, Dec 1787, Aug 1789, 1790-1794 Tax List of Bernards Twp, Somerset, NJ[31] 

He may be the Isaac Lane of Canajoharie, Montgomery, NY, in 1800 Census[32] listed as follows:
