Notes on the Descendants of Jan, son of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt

 Notes on the Descendants of Jan, son of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt

This post is a follow-up of an earlier one entitled “Notes on the Family of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland.”  That post provided an overview of the research on the family.  It included comments and corrections on the family of Matthias Lane and several of his supposed children.  The family as described Honeyman in “The Lane Families of Somerset County and Vicinity”.[1]

Jan Lane and Aeltje Van Duyn had three children:

1)      Garret, baptized 30 Oct 1695, died young;

2)      Matthias; and

3)      Jacomyntje.

Matthias and Jacomyntje are acknowledged as Aeltje’s children in an acknowledgement that she and her children had received their legacies according to her father’s will in 1715.[2] Nothing further is known of Jacomyntje.

Honeyman cites 19 Sep 1708 as the baptismal date for Tijs3 Lane (Jan2, Matthias1).  However, the record[3] lists the parents as Jan Tijsse and Jannetje, not Aeltje.  Also, one of the witnesses is Feytje Matijsse, probably the sister of Jan Tijsse, both probably children of Thys Lubbertszen Van Ryp and Tryntje Jans.  Honeyman had also misidentified Thys and Tryntje’s children Ann, Peter, and Elizabeth as children of Matthias1 Lane.[4]  Honeyman gives no further information regarding him, his focus being on the families in New Jersey.

Matthias3 was actually much older than that baptismal record would imply.  He married Catherine Blom about 1716 and had three children:

1)      Their eldest son, Jan4, was baptized on 28 Jul 1717,[5] the witnesses being Peter Cornell [Jan’s paternal step-grandfather] and Aeltje Cornell [Jan’s paternal grandmother].

2)      Their second son, Barent4, was baptized 29 Mar 1719,[6] the witnesses being Barent Blom [Jan’s maternal uncle] and Maria Blom [Jan’s maternal grandmother].  He died young.

3)      Their third son, Thys4, was baptized 25 Mar 1722.[7]  The parents are listed as Pieter Cornel [Thys’ step-grandfather] and Catherine Laning [Thys’ mother], while the witnesses were Joris Blom [Thys’ maternal uncle] and his wife.  Joris Blom’s will[8] mentions John Lane and Matthias Lane, sons of Matthias Lane.  Matthias3 Lane’s will,[9] dated 21 Jan 1721 in Jamaica and proved 10 Mar 1721, mentions his children John, Barent, and an unborn child, undoubtedly Matthias.

John4 Lane (Matthias3, Jan2, Matthias1) married Ida Suydam.  Little is known of their sons: John, Matthew, Jacob and Thomas, mentioned in his will,[10] written in New Utrecht, NY, dated 18 Mar 1766, and proved 29 Jul 1766.  Their family was discussed in an earlier blog post, “Matthew Lane, merchant of Pluckemin, New Jersey”,[11] as Matthew5 is likely their son.  Also discussed in that post were a John Lane, a Jacob, and a Thomas Lane who lived in the area who could be their sons as well, but of whom little is known.

In the previous post, “Notes on the Descendants of Gysbert, son of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt”,[12] Jacob Lane, husband of Susanna Van Court, was identified as Jacob5 Lane (Cornelius4, Adrian3, Gysbert2, Matthys1), following Honeyman’s tentative identification.[13]  However, a more probable identification is that this Jacob5 is the son of John Lane and Ida Suydam.

Honeyman does not give any reasons for his tentative placement of Jacob5, but it may be because Jacob and Susanna’s eldest daughter, Hannah, was baptized at Readington, Hunterdon, NJ,[14] and most of Cornelius’ children were baptized there.  However, Hannah was named after her maternal grandmother, Hannah, and Susannah’s brother, John, died in Hunterdon Co. in 1784, so perhaps Hannah was baptized there for her family, not Jacob’s.

There are three reasons that suggest that Jacob was the son of John Lane and Ida Suydam.  First, he is likely the Jacob Lane who appears in the 1780 Tax List of Bedminster Twp., Somerset Co., NJ[15] (and likely the J Lane who appears in the 1779, 1780 and 1782 Tax Lists), along with his probable brothers, Matthew and Thomas.  He is likely the Jacob Lane who served in Capt. Jacob Ten Eyck’s Company in the Revolutionary War[16] along with his presumed brothers, Thomas and John.  Second, he migrated back to Kings Co., NY, unusual for the Dutch after they left, appearing in the 1790 and 1800 censuses of Flatbush, while at New Utrecht (the town where his probable father, John Lane, died) Jacbo’s son, John, was baptized in 1788 (RECORD 113(1982):169), and his daughter, Catherine, was married in 1802.  Third, though Jacob’s family appears to have only used the Dutch naming conventions in a limited way (Jacob eldest daughter, Hannah, was named after her maternal grandmother) Jacob’s son, John, may have been named after his paternal grandfather (though he may have been named after his maternal uncle who gave him a substantial inheritance).  His second daughter, Catherine, may have been named after her paternal great grandmother, as Matthew Lane, his presumed brother, and John (see below), his presumed brother, had also done.  Hopefully more research on Jacob and his brother, John, can confirm this placement.

The children of Jacob Lane and Susanna Van Court were:
    1)  Susannah, baptized 11 Jan 1782 at Readington, NJ;
    2)  Catherine, born about 1784;
    3)  John, baptized 23 Mar 1788 at New Utrecht, NY;
    4)  Nancy, born 23 Apr 1795;
    5)  Tryntje, born 02 May 1799, baptized at Flatlands, NY;
    6)  Phebe Stryker, born 21 Oct 1803, baptized at Newtown, NY.

Nothing further is known for certain regarding John5 Lane.  He may be the John Lane who married Helena Johnson with a New York license dated 6 Jul 1773.[17]  He may also be the John Lane and Lena (Johnson) who had the following children:

1)      Jan, baptized 25 Aug 1776 at Six Mile Run, NJ, named after his presumed paternal grandfather and his father;

2)      Catrynche, baptized 30 Mar 1783 at Hillsborough, NJ, named after her presumed paternal great grandmother;

3)   Rebecca, baptized 17 Dec 1786 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Harlingen, NJ; and

4)      Aeltje, baptized 16 Nov 1788, at Six Mile Run, NJ.

There is no close location connection between the John Lane and his presumed brothers Jacob, Thomas, and Matthew in Bedminster, Somerset, NJ.  John’s children were baptized at Six Mile Run, Somerset, NJ, Harlingen, Somerset, NJ, and Hillsborough, Somerset, NJ, and he does not appear in the Bedminster Tax Lists.  Also, he does not have a known son named Matthew.  Again, hopefully further research will be able to confirm this placement.

Nothing further is known for certain regarding Thomas5 Lane.  As mentioned earlier, he may be the Thomas Lane who was a member of Capt. Jacob Ten Eyck’s Company and may be the Thomas Lane of Bedminster, Somerset, NJ.  No other records of him have been found in New York or New Jersey.

Matthias4 Lane married Wyntje Stryker, daughter of Jacobus Stryker and Martha Griggs, baptized 13 Jul 1718 at Gravesend, NY.[18]  They lived at Oyster Bay, NY.[19]  He married second Martha Losee, daughter of Simon Losee and Grietje Koeck,[20] on 11 Dec 1763 at St. George’s Episcopal Church, Hempstead, NY.[21]  Matthis died before 25 Apr 1780 when his will[22] was proved.  He wrote it on 20 Sep 1776 in Oyster Bay, NY, mentioning his wife, Martha, and his daughter, daughter, Katharine Van Wyck.  His children were:

1)      Jacobus, baptized[23] 19 Jul 1745 at Success, NY, witnesses were Jacobus and Martha Stryker (the maternal grandparents), died young; and

2)      Catherine, baptized 25 May 1760 at Oyster Bay, NY, married Luke Elder Van Wyck 29 Jan 1775 at St. George Episcopal Church, NY.[24]  Their children were baptized at Oyster Bay.
