Notes on the Descendants of Jacob, son of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt

 Notes on the Descendants of Jacob, son of Matthias Lanen Van Pelt

This post is a follow-up of an earlier one entitled “Notes on the Family of Matthias Laenen Van Pelt of New Netherland.”  That post provided an overview of the research on the family.  It included comments and corrections on the family of Matthias Lane and several of his supposed children.  Jacob’s family was described very briefly by Honeyman in “The Lane Families of Somerset County and Vicinity”.[1]

Jacob was born about 1669, probably in New Utrecht, NY where his father lived as stated in an agreement regarding his estate[2] and Tonis Lanen (probably Matthys’ brother, Teunis Van Pelt) was appointed as his guardian in 1683.  He married Elizabeth Barkeloo, daughter William Van Barkeloo and Elizabeth Romeyn.  He probably married and moved to New Jersey by 1698 as his family does not appear in the 1698 census of Kings Co., NY,[3] nor does he appear to be living with his guardian, Teunis Van Pelt of New Utrecht, NY.

He may be the Jacob Lane of Upper Freehold, Monmouth, NJ who took possession of land there formerly owned by William Dockwra, dec.25 Mar 1732.[4]  It may have been his son, Jacob Lane, Jr. of Upper Freehold, Monmouth, NJ, who purchased 116 acres in Upper Freehold on
26 Apr 1731 and 20 more acres on 15 Jun 1731.[5]  His son may be the Jacob Lair (sic) who included in the 1731 Tax List of Upper Freehold, NJ[6] with 120 acres.  Jacob Lane, Sr. is probably the Jacob Lain included in the 1748 list of Freeholders of Freehold, Monmouth, NJ.[7]  He is not listed in the 1755 list of Freeholders of Freehold.

He was of Freehold, Monmouth, NJ on
1 Nov 1738 when he wrote his will there.[8]  It does not mention his wife, but does mention his brother-in-law, Derrick Barkeloo.  His children are listed by sex, probably by age, including:
     1)  Helen (married name Amack), born circa 1701;
     2)  Arriantje (married name Golder), born circa 1703;
     3)  Jannetje (married name Van Cleef), born circa 1705;
     4)  Elizabeth (married name Van Mater), born circa 1707;
     5)  Jacob, baptized 30 Oct 1709;[9] and
     6)  Matthias, baptized 16 Nov 1712.[10]

Jacob did not marry 2nd Jane Couwenhoven on 17 Jul 1720 as Honeyman suggested he may have.  His wife is named as Elizabeth Lane in a membership listing of the Freehold congregation in 1731.[11]  Most women were listed by their maiden name, so it is possible he remarried someone else, but if so, she has not been placed in the Lane family.   The date referenced appears to be a confusion with the appointment of Jacob Lane and Jan Couwenhoven as elders of the church[12] on that same day.  Jacob died before 16 Feb 1762 when his will was proved.

Jacob’s daughter, Helen3, married Teunis Amack.  Helen Lane and Teunis Amack were members of the Dutch Reformed Church at Freehold, Monmouth, NJ,[13] where most of their children were baptized.  Their family is listed in a Bible record published in 2015.[14] The spouses of their children are known from in part from Jacob’s will, but also from the witnesses of the baptism of their children.

Notes for BENJAMIN VAN MATER:

Neeltje, b 1730, is said to have married Garret Couwenhoven about 1748, however they had another daughter named Neeltje baptized on 15 Feb 1746/47 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Freehold and Middletown.  I am assuming the baptismal record in 1747 is incorrect.

 Will mentions wife Elizabeth, daughter Elanor, wife of Jarot Covenhoven, granddaughter, Ida Bennet, daughter of deceased daughter, Elizabeth, son Cerynus, son Cornelius, grandson Benjamin, son Jacob's oldest son.

 Monmouth Bible record:  1st couple entries seem to be written by Benjamin, next 5 by Elizabeth Lane, the last few by Annetje Schenck.  Bible Records from the Monmouth County Historical Association Library, Vol. 8, p. 55.
