John Updike, Jr., son of John Updike and Mary Bragaw

John Updike, Jr., son of John Updike and Mary Bragaw

In a previous post,1 some new information was presented regarding John Updike, Jr.  He was thought to have been born about 1758,2  However, his tombstone says he died on 19 Oct 1819 in the 78th year of his age,3 so born about 1742.

This is supported by his previously unknown first wife, Gertie Truax, as described in the earlier post.  He was probably married by 1765 when his was a witness to a deed executed by his brother-in-law, Abraham Truax.  He also served as a juror for the Supreme Court case of William Dorris v. Tristram Hull in Somerset Co., NJ in 1767,4 so was of age by then.  John Updike, Junr appeared before Joseph Skelton, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, Middlesex Co., Dated - 15 April 1775.5

The surname of his second wife, Mary, is given in the deed dated 2/5/18056 from John Updike to David Johnson, which named the four sons and four daughters of Jeremiah Smith, including Mary, stating "... and the said John Opdike by his marriage to Mary Smith one of the before mentioned daughters."  Other researchers have read this to imply that Mary was a daughter of one of the heirs of Jeremiah, but I believe that is clearly not the case.  Given that Jeremiah was John’s eldest child, I believe Mary was the mother of all of John’s children.

His residence was stated as Seneca Co., NY.  However, Tompkins Co. was formed in 1817 from Seneca Co., so he could well have lived in what is now Tompkins Co.

Information has been added regarding the wives and children of his sons, Jonathan and William, and the families of his granddaughters.
