The Family of Agnietje Boonen, Wife of Lodewyck Cornelis Post

The Family of Agnietje Boonen, Wife of Lodewyck Cornelis Post

Much of the initial research for this family was provided by Chris Brooks.  Later, from an estate settlement in 1635,1 we known that Agnes2 and her sister, Elizabeth2, were daughters of Willem1 Boonen and Elizabeth Herckmans, his first wife.  Their uncle, Elias Herckmans, acted on their behalf.  The settlement also states that his sons, Dirck2 and Jan2, were from his second wife, Judith Bex, while their uncle, Coenrad Bex, acted on their behalf.

A record of his first marriage has not been found, but from the intentions for his second marriage to Judith Bex on 26 Nov 1622 at Amsterdam, The Netherlands,2 we know that he was born about 1591 in Ruhrort, presumably in Germany, his parents were deceased by 1622, that he had been living in Amsterdam for 6 years, and was a wine leaver.  They had a son, Ael, baptized on 16 May 1624 at Amsterdam3 who apparently died young as he is not mentioned in the estate settlement of 1635.  Judith died sometime between 1631 when she wrote her testament4 (naming her sons Dirck and Jan) and the estate settlement in 1635.

Willem married third Elsje Jans on 10 Aug 1635.5  They had three children:
    1)   A child2 born circa 1636, buried 25 Dec 1638 at Amsterdam;6
    2)   Frederick, baptized 20 Aug 1637 at Amsterdam;7 and
    3)   Mary, baptized 26 Oct 1642, buried 01 Sep 1644 at Amsterdam.8

William died before 10 Jul 1661 when an inventory of his estate was taken.9  It names Elsje Jans, his wife, his children: Agnes; Elizabeth; Dirck; Jan; and Frederick, and mentions that Agnes is located in New Netherland.

A Styntje Boonen was a witness at the baptism of Belitje Post, daughter of Agnes Boonen, on 28 May 1643 at Amsterdam.  She has not been placed in this family as she is not mentioned in the estate settlement of 1635, but is likely a relative, see below.  She may have been the widow of Lenaert Cranen who died before 22 Apr 1750.10

Agnes was stated as being born at Moers, presumably in Germany, in her marriage intentions with Lodewyck Cornelis Post,11 dated 17 Nov 1640, assisted by her father, Willem.  Her uncle, Elias Herckmans, was stated to have been born about 1596 and also from Moers, Germany, when he married Machtel Wouters on 13 Mar 1620/21 in Amsterdam.12

Elizabeth2 married Peter Barends.13  They are said to have lived in Emden, but I have not been able to verify that.  No further trace.

Dirck2 was baptized on 09 Feb 1626/27 at Amsterdam,14 the witness was Tryntje Bex.  He married Elizabeth, daughter of Lucas Liskaliet and Elizabeth Koerk, on 04 Feb 1655/56 at Amsterdam.15  He died after 4 Nov 1679 when he wrote his testament16 mentioning his parents, first and second wife, and his son, Nicholas.  He married his second wife, Annetje Setterich, on 30 Jul 1667 at Amsterdam.17

Jan2 was baptized on 24 Aug 1630 at Amsterdam,18 the witness was Poúlús Bex.  He married Anna, daughter of Lucas Liskaliet and Elizabeth Koerk, on 13 Sep 1656 at Amsterdam.19

Frederick2 was baptized on 20 Aug 1637 at Amsterdam,20  He married Elizabeth de Munt on 07 Sep 1658 at Amsterdam.21   He signed an agreement on 15 Nov 1668 with members of her family.22   He probably died before 15 Feb 1671 when a Frederick Boonen was buried.23

From the Amsterdam archives it is clear Willem’s wine business was extensive.  He made several attestations, including:
    1)   On 17 Dec 1631 regarding Rhine wine;24
    2)   On 1 Feb 1633 regarding French wine;25
    3)   On 13 Jan 1635 regarding debt collection in Duisburg;26
    4)   On 5 Feb 1635 regarding business in Nantes in Vranckrijck;27
    5)   On 17 Sep 1638, regarding business in Copenhagen;28
    6)   On 1 Oct 1638 regarding business in Rotterdam;29
    7)   On 25 Feb 1639 regarding business in Riga;30
    8)   On 23 May 1641 regarding business in Ceulen and Dordrecht;31 and
    9)   On 30 Sep 1658 regarding business in Venice,32 along with his son, Frederick.

At Dirck’s first marriage and the marriages Jan and Frederick, they are styled as “van Stockem” or some version thereof.  The location is uncertain, but may refer to the town of Stockum (now part of Dusseldorf), a few miles south of Ruhrort, Moers, and Duisburg.  The reason is also unclear as the family seems to have been living in Amsterdam when they were born and during their childhood.

Other Boonen Families

One of the goals of this research was to find other related Boonen families, particularly Metje Boonen, wife of Wessel Hermans.33  Three possibly related families were identified:

     1)   Jan Dircks Boonen of Ruhrort, Germany, married Aechtgen Arents Ingen with intentions dated 22 Jul 1618 at Dordrecht, The Netherlands.34  They had a daughter named Metje.

     2)   Dirck Boonen of Ruhrort, Germany, married Janneken Aert Hillen with intentions dated 04 May 1621 at Dordrecht, The Netherlands.35  They had a daughter named Metje.

     3)   Metje Dircksen Boonen of Tiel, The Netherlands, married Wessel Hermans with intentions dated 26 May 1624 at Dordrecht, The Netherlands.36

No direct connections have been found between these families.  Willem, Jan and Dirck were all born in Ruhrort.  Jan and Metje both used the patronymic name, Dircks, while Willem’s second son was named Dirck.  Jan, Dirck, and Metje were all married at Dodrecht, while the location of Willem’s first marriage is unknown.  Jan and Dirck had adjoining homes in Dordrecht.37  Jan and Dirck both had daughters named Metje Metje had a daughter named Christina who may have been named after a maternal aunt, possibly the Styntje Boonen mentioned earlier.  Metje and her children emigrated to New Netherland as did the family of Willem’s daughter, Agnes.  See the blog post, The Family of Jan Wessels and Annetje Hartmans and Related Families, for more information about the possible connection between the families of Metje Boonen and Agnes Boonen.38

The Family of Elias1 Herckmans

Elias, brother of Elizabeth Herckmans, is included here in hopes that further research on him will be of assistance in finding their parents.  He was born about 1596 at Moers, Germany according to his intentions to marry Machteld Wouters, published on 3 Mar 1621, but was without parents at that time.40  In the baptismal record of his daughter, Mary, he is described as a trader at Moskovijen (Muscovy, a historical name often given to pre-reform Russia).41  He was a geographer, cartographer, writer, and administrator.42  His professional life is described in a journal, Oud Holland,43 and in an article by Britt Dams.44  He went to work for the WIC and arrived in Recife, Brazil on 23 Dec 1635.  Machteld may be the Machtel Wouters who was buried on 26 Dec 1635 at Amsterdam.45  He appears to have married (2) a woman named Anna van ?golt, mentioned in a document dated 31 Dec 1644 at Arnhem as his widow (and included a mention of Peter Coets, his brother-in-law).46  He died at Recife on 6 Jan 1644.

Children of ELIAS HERCKMANS and MACHTEL WOUTERS are:

i. ANNETJE2 HERCKMANS, baptized 09 Jan 1621/22, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

ii. ELIZABETH HERCKMANS, baptized 26 Nov 1623, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

iii. MARY HERCKMANS, baptized 26 Jun 1625, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands; m. ROELOF COENDERS VAN STEENWIJCK, 26 Sep 1647, Arnhem, The Netherlands, b. Nijmegen, The Netherlands, m second LEVIN BRANDT in Nov 1652 at Arnhem, The Netherlands.

iv. HERMAN HERCKMANS, baptized 01 Aug 1627, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands; d. bef. 1635.

v. WOUTER (GUALTHERUS) HERCKMANS, baptized 11 Mar 1628/29, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands, m. GISBERTJE COETS 25 Jul 1652 at Arnhem, The Netherlands.

vi. MACHTEL HERCKMANS, baptized 02 Mar 1630/31, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

vii. HERMAN HERCKMANS, baptized 18 Feb 1634/35, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands; m. SOPHIA WILLEMS, 06 Jan 1660/61, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Elias probably had a sister, Walburgh, who served as a witness for the baptisms of several of her nieces and nephews:

     1)   Herman, son of Elias Herckmans and Machteld Wouters on 1 Aug 1627;47

     2)   Machteld, daughter of Elias Herckmans and Machteld Wouters on 2 Mar 1631;48

     3)   Herman, son of Elias Herckmans and Machteld Wouters on 18 Feb 1635;49

     4)   Elias, son of Herman Herckmans and Swaentien Willems Ridderinkhof on 14 Oct 1663.50

She married Pieter Coets on 16 Oct 1641 in Paraiba, Brazil.51  They appear to have returned to The Netherlands not too long after as he or she appear in several records, including:

     1)   Walburgh (Hermans – sic) and her niece Mary, are probably the witnesses for her nephew, Elias, son of Lodewyck Post and Agnes Boonen on 21 Jan 1646;52

     2)   Walburgh assisted in the marriage of her niece, Mary Herckmans, on 26 Sep 1647 at Arnhem, The Netherlands; and

     3)   Peter Coets sued the WIC in February 1647 for a rescue fleet to Brazil at the court in Arnhem, The Netherlands,53 still outstanding in 1663.

Peter was previously married and they had a daughter named Margaret, who married Adam Ten Haef.  It is not known if Walburgh and Peter had any children together.  He died before 1654.  She died after 1664 in Arnhem, but neither of their wills have been found.
