Lambert Jansen of Flatbush, NY and Middletown, NJ

Lambert Jansen of Flatbush, NY and Middletown, NJ

This study of the family of Lambert Jansen was undertaken to distinguish them from the other Jansen families in Flatbush and in Monmouth, NJ.  As no published genealogy of this family was found, this post will serve as an introduction to the family.

Descendants of Lambert Jansen

Generation No. 1

1.  LAMBERT1 JANSEN was born circa 1654,[1] died after 22 Aug 1732.[2]  He married FYTJE or TYTJE BLOM, daughter of BARENT BLOM and STYNTJE CLAES.  She was baptized 19 Jul 1654 in near New Amsterdam.[3]

He arrived in New Netherland about 1665, possibly with his parents.[4]  He was listed in the Assessment Roll of Flatbush, Kings, NY on 22 Aug 1675 with 1 poll, but no property.[5]   He moved to New Utrecht by 1679 where his eldest child was born.[6]

He was a weaver of New Utrecht, NY on 1 Sep 1694 when he bought land in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ from John Pearce.[7]  He registered an earmark on 2 Mar 1697 in Middletown.[8]  His son, Nicholas took over his mark in 1728.  He owned land bordering land purchased by John Reid on 10 Feb 1706, which bordered the town lots of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.[9]  He owned land bordering land in Waceke, Middletown, Monmouth, NJ surveyed for Peter Somans on 10 Dec 1709.[10]  He was a weaver, of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ who sold land in Middletown to his son Jacob, yeoman, also of Middletown, on 17 Feb 1720.[11]  On the same day he sold land in Middletown to his son Nicholas, yeoman, also of Middletown, on 17 Feb 1720.[12]

Children of LAMBERT JANSEN and FYTJE BLOM are:

                   i.    IDA2 JOHNSON, bap. 25 Dec 1679, near Flatbush, NY.

ii.    STYNTJE JOHNSON, bap. 12 Feb 1681/82, near Flatbush, NY.

2.              iii.    BARENT JOHNSON, bap. 02 Nov 1683, near Flatbush, NY.

iv.    FEYTJE JOHNSON, bap. 13 Jun 1685, near Flatbush, NY.

                   v.    JACOB JOHNSON, bap. 24 Mar 1686/87, near Flatbush, NY.  On 21 Jan 1735 he registered his earmark at Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.[13]  He is listed in 1748 and 1755 as a freeholder in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  He may have had a son, Isaac, who is listed in as a freeholder in 1755.[14]

3.               vi.    JAN JOHNSON, bap. 21 Apr 1689, near Brooklyn, NY.

vii.    NICHOLAS JOHNSON, b. circa 1691, NY.  He recorded the earmark of his father as his own on 10 Sep 1728 at Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.[15]  He was probably the Nicholas Johnson who was a member of the Baptist Church of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ on 24 May 1712, possibly married to a woman named Elizabeth who joined the church in 1735.[16]  He is probably the Nicholas Johnson who witnessed the deed of John Wilson of Middletown on 22 Aug 1732 and acknowledged it on 14 Sep 1747.[17]  He was probably the Middletown town clerk from 1734-1749.

viii.    MARTIN JOHNSON, bap. 23 Jun 1697, near NYC, NY, no further trace.

Generation No. 2

2.  BARENT2 JOHNSON (LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was baptized 02 Nov 1683 in near Flatbush, NY.  He married SUSAN SKELTON, who d. bef. 7 May 1750.

He registered his earmark 21 May 1717 at Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.[18]

Children of BARENT JOHNSON and SUSAN SKELTON are:

                   i.    SKELTON JOHNSON, b. circa 1721; m. JUDITH COMPTON, 03 Jul 1752, Monmouth, NJ.  As son and heir of Susan Skelton, dec’d, he (no wife mentioned) sold land in Middletown, NJ on 7 May 1750.[19]  He purchased land in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ on 25 Aug 1753.

ii.    probably JOHN JOHNSON, b. circa 1723.  He is not in the list of freeholders in 1748 or 1755 of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  He married Ida Wilson with license dated 5 Jul 1749.  The abstract of their marriage record:  #089;   John JOHNSON of Middletown, and Jacob VANHOOK (VAN HOOK) of Eggharbour*...                          He had at least three children:

1)       Cornelia.  Harman (no wife mentioned) sold 10 acres of land to his daughter, Cornelia Johnson, Tayloris, on 9 Jun 1769.[22]  She appears to have had 2 children, Barent and Joseph, since on 5 Nov 1810 Barns Johnson of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ sold to John Davis of the same place for $30 a sartin (sic) equal share with my brother, Joseph Johnson, which lot lays for 10 1/2 acres which we claim a right to as ayrs (sic) to mother Cornelia Johnson for which she claimed a right by deed from her father, Harmon Johnson, lying between John Davis and John Johnson.[23]

2)       John.

3)       Harman.  On 10 Apr 1790 Harman Johnson, carpenter, appointed Daniel Covenhoven as his attorney, to obtain for him from his brother, John Johnson, his portion of land that had been left to them by the will of their dec'd father, Harman Johnson.[24]  This will was not found.  He may have married Phebe Rose with license dated 3 Feb 1767.[25]  The abstract of their marriage record:[26] #166;   (Girshum - lined thru) Harman JOHNSON of Middletown in the County of Monmouth, and Joseph DAVIS of the same place...[bound to]... Child of ALICE JOHNSON and JOHN DEBOWE is:

                  ii.    JOHN4 DEBOWE.

Child of ALICE JOHNSON and EDWARD ANDREWS is:

                   i.    JOSEPH4 ANDREWS.

Child of MARGARET JOHNSON and SAMUEL BOWNE is:

                  ii.    JOSEPH4 BOWNE, b. 10 Aug 1765.

6.  MATTHIAS3 JOHNSON (JAN2, LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was born circa 1710, d. bef. 5 Oct 1805.

On 13 Oct 1804 Christiana Johnson, relict of Joseph Johnson, dec'd, of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ, sent notice that her husband held an undivided right in property in Middletown with his brothers Matthias and Lambert Johnson, descended to them from their father, Matthias Johnson, and uncle Nicholas Johnson, dec'd.[35]

On 19 Jan 1735 He registered his earmark at Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  It was transferred to Christiana Johnson [widow of his son, Joseph] in 1801.[36]

On 29 Feb 1748/9 Joseph Cox of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ sells to Matthias Johnson & Obadiah Bowne, of the same place...that I form. granted to my son, Thomas.[37]

On 31 Mar 1762 Mathias Johnson and Obadiah Browne, Junr. of Middletown, Monmouth Co., East NJ sell to John Stout.[38]

The timeline here is tight for Matthias to have bought land in 1748 if he was actually Matthias, Jr.  The Cox Family in America", compiled by George William Cocks, pg. 158, says that Joseph Cox sold land previously granted to his son, Thomas Cox, to Matthias Johnson, his son-in-law.  A town record of November 17, 1750, to the effect that Matthias Johnson, Jr., used the ear mark of his grandfather, Joseph Cox.  It was later transferred to John C. Vanderbilt,.[39] his grandson.  Rebecca, presumably Cox, wife of Matthias Johnson, Jr. may have been the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Cox, granddaughter of Joseph Cox.

Children of MATTHIAS JOHNSON are:

8.                i.    CATHERINE4 JOHNSON, b. circa 1734, NJ; d. 11 Jan 1807, Monmouth, NJ.

9.               ii.    MATTHIAS JOHNSON, b. circa 1736, NJ.

iii.    prob. JOHN JOHNSON, b. circa 1740.  He is presumably the person who sold land with Matthias Johnson in 1799, see below.  If correct, he married a woman named Catherine and died without heirs 5 Oct 1805.

10.             iv.    MARGARET JOHNSON, b. circa 1738.

                   v.    LAMBERT JOHNSON, b. circa 1742; d. bef. 31 May 1821, Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.

His will mention Joseph Collins, his wife Hannah, Elizabeth Collins and Ann Collins, his nephew, John Vanderbilt (bequest after the decease of Joseph, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Ann Collins, and any children of Joseph reach the age of 21), and his 2 nieces, Elizabeth Johnson and Martha Johnson.[40]

11.             vi.    JOSEPH JOHNSON, b. circa 1756; d. bef. 11 Apr 1801, Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.

7.  LAMBERT3 JOHNSON (JAN2, LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was born circa 1720, and died bef. 26 Dec 1786 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  He married IDA MCCLEES 22 Jul 17451 in Monmouth, NJ, daughter of JAN MCCLEES and IDA UNKNOWN.  She was born circa 1720 in NY.

His will mentions grandson, John Johnson, not yet 21.  Neither daughter, Margaret or Rachel, had a married name.  Executor was friend, Peter McCleese.[41]

The abstract of their marriage record:  #079;  Lambert JOHNSTON (JOHNSON - his mark) and Cornelius McCLEAS (McLEESE), both of the County of Monmouth, yeomen... [bound to]... Lewis MORRIS, Governor... 500 pounds... 22 July 1745. ... Lambert JOHNSTON... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Itcha McCLEAS, spinster... [w] John SMYTH.[42]

Children of LAMBERT JOHNSON and IDA MCCLEES are:

12.              i.    LAMBERT4 JOHNSON, b. circa 1746, NJ; d. 15 Apr 1777, Brooklyn, NY.

iii.    MARGARET JOHNSON, b. circa 1760, NJ.

iv.    RACHEL JOHNSON, b. circa 1763, NJ.

Generation No. 4

8.  CATHERINE4 JOHNSON (MATTHIAS3, JAN2, LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was born circa 1734 in NJ, and died 11 Jan 1807 in Monmouth, NJ.[43]  She married JOSEPH GOLDEN 30 Dec 1754 in Monmouth, NJ1, son of ELIAS GOLDER and ADRIANTJE UNKNOWN.  He was born 04 Mar 1731/32 in NJ, and died 06 Jun 1795 in Monmouth, NJ.[44]

I am assuming her age according on her tombstone (77 years, 4 months, 21 days) is incorrect and her age was 3 - 5 years younger (her father gave his consent, implying she was underage).

Her husband's will was witnessed by Lambert Johnson, Joseph Collins (see Lambert's will) and Jehe (sic) Johnson.

The abstract of her marriage reads:  #068;   Joseph GOLDEN and William THOMSON (TOMSON) both of Middletown... [bound to]... Jonathan BELCHER, Governor... 500 pounds... 30 Dec 1754. ... Joseph GOLDEN... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Catherine JOHNSON of Middletown, spinster... [w] Tho:s BARTOW [consent] 1754, Dec 30 [note: 29 changed to 30]... conserning the intended marriage of one Joseph GOLDEN and Cathrine JOHNSON the daughter Mathas JOHNSON... I her father do give my consent and I Elias JOHNSON my father we do frely give both our consent... [signed] Elias GOLDEN and delivered to me J.G. [signed] Matthias JOHNSON [w] William TOMSON.[45]

Joseph Golden’s will mentions his wife's sister, Elizabeth Johnson.

Children of CATHERINE JOHNSON and JOSEPH GOLDEN are:

                   i.    ABRAHAM5 GOLDEN, b. 06 Feb 1755, NJ; d. 26 Aug 1790, JANE COUWENHOVEN.

ii.    JOHN GOLDEN, b. circa 1757, NJ.

iii.    ELIAS GOLDEN, b. circa 1765, NJ; m. CATHERINE STILLWELL.

iv.    MATTHIAS GOLDEN, b. circa 1768, NJ; m. ARMINTHA UNKNOWN.

9.  MATTHIAS4 JOHNSON (MATTHIAS3, JAN2, LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was born circa 1736 in NJ, died circa 1805.  He married REBECCA COX.

14 Jul 1799 Mathias and Rebecca Johnson and John and Catherine Johnson of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ deeded to Anthony Smith of the same place, land in Middletown.[46]  It is not clear if, but probably how, John and Matthias are related.  I assume he is his brother and died before 1803 without heirs.

20 Jan 1803 Matthias and Rebecca Johnson of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ sold land in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ, bordering land of Joseph Johnson, dec'd.[47]

On 5 Oct 1805 Matthias Johnson, Catherine Johnson, George and Rebecca Smith of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ released to Nicholas Johnson of the same place for $5, land that they were heirs to of Matthias Johnson, dec'd, bordering Anthony Smith, Daniel Hendrickson, late Joseph Johnson, dec'd.[48]

Children of MATTHIAS JOHNSON and REBECCA COX are:[49]

The will of her brother, Lambert, mentions his nephew, John Vanderbilt.

Children of MARGARET JOHNSON and CORNELIUS VANDERBILT are:

                   i.    JANNETJE LYDIA5 VANDERBILT, bap. 22 Nov 1761, near Freehold, Monmouth, NJ.

ii.    HENDRICK VANDERBILT, bap. 22 Nov 1761, near Freehold, Monmouth, NJ.

Revolutionary War Pension File: W3883

Jane Cowenhoven, widow of Hendrick Vanderbilt, son of Cornelius filed for pension on 8/22/1838 when she was 79.  They married on 4/10/1783.  He died on 3/10/1808.  He initially enlisted in Jul 1776.

iii.    JOHN VANDERBILT, b. circa 1771.

11.  JOSEPH4 JOHNSON (MATTHIAS3, JAN2, LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was born circa 1756, and died bef. 11 Apr 1801 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  He married CHRISTIANA STRICKER, b. 1761, daughter of Henry Stricker, died bef. 07 Apr 1813 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  She is mentioned in the will of her father as Christian Johnson.

In his will Lambert is appointed one of the executors (Isaac Van Dorn and Cornelius Hendrickson the others), and "[his wife] to bring up my 3 children, until the youngest is of age."[51]

5 May 1803, Christiana Johnson, widow of Joseph Johnson late of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ, released land to Timothy Mount.[52]

Christiana’s will mentions her 3 children, a note to Obadiah Stillwell and one to Isaac Van Dorn.  Executor: friend George Crawford.[53]

Children of JOSEPH JOHNSON and CHRISTIANA STRICKER are:

                   i.    LAMBERT5 JOHNSON.

                  ii.    ELIZABETH JOHNSON, b. circa , 1787, d. 29 Oct 1830.

                 iii.    MARTHA JOHNSON.

12.  LAMBERT4 JOHNSON (LAMBERT3, JAN2, LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was born circa 1746 in NJ, and died 15 Apr 1777 in Brooklyn, NY.  He married CHARITY MCCLEES.  She died bef. 10 Nov 1788 in Monmouth, NJ.

A Lambert, Jr. he recorded his earmark on 11 Mar 1766.[54]  He died during his service in the Revolutionary war: "Johnson, Lambert {N.J.} Ensign New Jersey Militia, ---; taken prisoner at ---, 13 February, 1777, and died in captivity, 15th April, 1777".[55]

Will of Charity Johnson of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ written on 1 Jan 1785 mentions son, John.  Executors: Lambard Johnson and William Crawford. Proved 10 Nov 1788.  Renunciation by William Crawford, Cornelius McClees, Margaret Johnson and Rachel Johnson.  The executor, Lambert Johnson, had died in the interim.[56]

Child of LAMBERT JOHNSON and CHARITY MCCLEES is:

                   i.    JOHN5 JOHNSON.

13.  HENRY4 JOHNSON (LAMBERT3, JAN2, LAMBERT1 JANSEN) was born circa 1755 in NJ, and died 13 Oct 1841 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.  He married SARAH MORFORD.  She was born circa 1753, and died 07 Sep 1843 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.

Children of HENRY JOHNSON and SARAH MORFORD are:

                   i.    poss. REBECCA JOHNSON, b. 1781, NJ, m. George Goodenough.

iv.    RACHEL JOHNSON, b. circa 1793, NJ.  As Rachel King, she is probably living with her brother, Lambert in the 1850 and 1860 census of Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.

                   v.    LAMBERT5 JOHNSON, b. 1795, NJ; d. 29 Nov 1873, Monmouth, NJ, m. Sarah Doren 20 Feb 1819.1
