The Family of Jan Wouters Van Den Bosch
The goal of this post is to bring together various strands of research on this family and help to fill in some of the blanks. The early work on this family was done by Donald Lines Jacobus,[i] outlining the first three generations of this family. He pointed out the complications for researching Dutch families caused by the transition from patronymic names to surnames. The transition in this family continued for another two generations as most descendants adopted the surname name of Johnson, while others adopted the surnames Lamberts, Bosch and Bush.
One addition to Lines’ work is the identification of another daughter of Jan Wouters, born about 1655, based on a ship list of 1659, which also states that he was from Ravesteyn.[ii] Given that he had a daughter born about 1655, Jan Wouters was probably born about 1630, rather than 1638. Some have identified the daughter as Sophia, wife of Gysbert Jans Van Dyck, probably because of a baptismal record of her daughter, Martha, where Jan Wouters van den Bosch appears as a witness,[iii] but she was actually the daughter Jan Harmens Van Amersfoort and Annetje Cornelis.[iv] Her name is still unknown.
One small correction to Lines’ work is that Wyntje Pieters was the half-sister of Kniertje Pieters Meet, not her sister. Their mother was Styntje Jacobs. Styntje married first Rutger Wouterszen on 26 May 1639 at Amersfoort, The Netherlands[v] and were the parents of Weyntje. As the widow of Rutger she married Jan Pieters Meet on 22 Sep 1654 at Amersfoort and were the parents Kniertje.[vi] Styntje Jacobs was one of the witnesses for her son, Benjamin, and her sister, Maria, was a witness for several of her children.[vii] Wyntje appears in the baptismal records at NYC[viii] of her children as Wyntje Rutgers, but on the return of the family from CT, she appears in records as Wyntje Pieters.[ix]
The family of Lambert2 Johnson (Jan Wouters1) includes the most new information for the descendants of Jan Wouters. Lambert probably had another son, Jan3, born about 1694. His name is given as Jan Lamberts or Jan Johnson in various records, alternating between his surname and his patronymic name. He would have been named after his paternal grandfather. He did not have a son named Lambert, but his oldest daughter was named Ann after her presumed paternal grandmother, his oldest son, Jan, and his next daughter, Elsje, were named after their maternal grandparents, in the normal Dutch style. He married Mayke Van Kirk before 8 Mar 1722 when their eldest daughter, Annetje, was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth, NJ.[x] Annetje was named after her paternal grandmother, and her paternal great aunt, Styntje Jansen, and her husband, Adrian Longstreet, served as the baptismal witnesses. He joined that church in March 1727.[xi] As Jan Lamberse and Mayke, his wife, they were baptismal witnesses for Mayke’s niece, Elsje, daughter of Johannes Truwexs and Sytie V. Kerk on 11 Mar 1733.[xii]
The abstract of the will of Jan3 reads:
“1743, Sept. 16. Lamberson, John, of Freehold, Monmouth Co., yeoman; will of. Wife, Maycy. Children - (all called "Johnson", John, Joseph, Rulef, James, Abraham, Anne, Else and Mary. Real and personal estate. Executors - the wife, Maycy Lamberson, son John Johnson, Tunis Van der Veer and Garret Whycoff. Witnesses - John Sutfin, Hendryck Voorhes and Richard Pittenger. proved May 27, 1760. Lib G., p 2325. 1760, July 9. Inventory 237.9. incl. books, 6s; made by John Longstreet and Timothy Lloyd (?).T.”[xiii] In it, all of his children are referred to with the surname, Johnson. Though they occasionally appeared in records with the patronymic name Lamberson, normally they used their surname, Johnson.
Though speculative, Lambert may have had another son, Joseph3, named after paternal grandfather, Joseph Benham. More information, including their children are detailed later. Also, based on circumstantial evidence, his daughter, Aefje, probably married Adam Clendenne about 1719, and his daughter, Sarah, probably married Richard Lean about 1734.
A couple of deeds show transactions between
Lambert and his younger brother, Jacob, at Staten Island. Deeds of Assignment for Jan Dorland recorded
on 2 Oct 1724.[xiv]
1) Indenture on 5 May 1701
between Jacob Johnson of Staten Island of first part and Lambert Dorland of the
same place of the other part.
2) Indenture on 5 May 1701 of Lambert Johnson of Staten Island of the one part and Lambert Dorland of the same place. Acknowledged by Lambert Johnson on 15 Nov 1701. Note: Lambert Johnson is probably the husband of Ann Benham. They lived at Staten Island. Jacob Johnson is probably his brother, Jacobus, who is named as Jacob in the baptism records of his children at Staten Island.
Lines does not provide any information about Hendrick2 Van Den Bosch (Jan Wouters1) beyond his marriage date. Hendrick married Maria DuBois, daughter of Jacques DuBois and Pieterneeltje Bentyn on 17 Oct 1685 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Bergen, NJ.[xv] He married second Arriantje Keyser, daughter of Dirck Keyser and Agnes Coens about 1693. His brother, Wouter, served as one of the baptismal witnesses for his eldest daughter, Annetje, on 10 Jun 1688 at Kingston, NY.[xvi] All of his children were baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, NY[xvii] and will be added here.
The maiden name of the wife of Wouter2 Van Den Bosch (Jan Wouters1) was probably Hendricks or Hendricksen. Tryntje’s name has been transcribed as Henrick (see Flatbush, pg. 267) Hendricksen (see Staten Island, pg. 9), and Hendricks (see Brooklyn, pg. 131). They had a daughter, Jannetje3, baptized 16 May 1692 at Brooklyn, NY,[xviii] no further trace.
Wouter’s grandchildren are named in an article, “New Haven and Wallingford Johnsons,”[xix] referenced by Lines. Wouter’s son, John3, had another son, Alexander, born in NJ about 1722.[xx] More information regarding the children of John3 was taken from Biographical and Genealogical History of Morris County, New Jersey, THE RECORD, First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, NJ, and History of the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, NJ.[xxi]
Jacob2 Johnson (Jan Wouters1) moved to Amwell, Hunterdon, NJ when he wrote his will there dated 18 Jul 1752.[xxii] It mentions his wife, Sarah, and his children: Cornelis, Joseph, Benjaman, Winchy Newman, Hannah (wife of James Stout), Mary (wife of John Hoff). It was proved 4 Apr 1753. It includes a son, Joseph, and daughter, Mary, not listed by Lines. He had another son, Jacobus, baptized 19 Apr 1709 at Staten Island.[xxiii]
His son, Cornelius3, married second Ann Stout.[xxiv] The children not listed by Lines were children of his second wife. His children, except Jacobus who was deceased at the time, are named in a petition from the legatees of Cornelius Johnson made October 30, 1781 to bring in a bill to amend certain deficiencies in the last will and testament of their father.[xxv] Then on March 29, 1782 Cornelius Johnson, the son of Cornelius, gave notice that he intended to present a bill at the next sitting of the Legislature. It was signed by: Sarah Coolbaugh, Cornelius Johnson, Rachel Van Campen, Mary Brooks, Elizabeth Barklow, Winifrid Runyan, Joseph Johnson, Rebeckah Johnson, Ann Johnson, Johanna Johnson.

There is no evidence that confirms his surname or who his
parents were. Wyntje is possibly the
daughter of Adam Clendenne and Aefje Johnson, sister of Joseph, though that
would be a very close relationship. The
baptismal records for the RDC of Staten Island include the following records.
1) 1746 May 20; Joseph Juwson, Senne
Johnson; Joseph;
2) 1748 Jul 19; Joseph Juwson, Wenne
Johnson; Enne;
3) 1750 Jul 30; Joseph Juessen, Wynty
Clindinne; Eefye; Enne would have been named after her paternal grandmother and
Eefye named after her maternal grandmother.
He may have had 2 children baptized at the Old Tennent
Presbyterian Church, Manalapan, NJ[17]
where Jan Lambertse/Jansen had his son Roelof baptized in 1731:

I have listed Naomi as a daughter of John Jr., rather
than John Sr.
1) Naomi is not listed in the will of her father, unless
it is as Jemima or one his other daughters
2) David is said in the Op Dyck Genealogy to be her brother, but he is not the son of John Sr. He is not the son of John Sr.'s brother, Garret (his brother Rutgert apparently did not live to maturity) or the son of John Jr's brother, Andrew. He must be the son of John Jr.

106. DAVID5 JOHNSON (JOHN4, JOHN3, RUTGER2 JANSEN, JAN WOUTERS1 VAN DEN BOSCH) was born 26 Jul 1755 in NJ, and died 08 Oct 1824 in Montgomery, Somerset, NJ. He married MARY UPDIKE, son of JOHN UPDIKE and MARY BRAGAW. She was born 1749 in NJ, and died 24 May 1807 in NJ.
In the Opdyke genealogy, David Johnson is remembered as a son of John Johnson and Catherine Updike. He was their grandson, being the son of John Johnson, Jr. and Elizabeth Huff. He had a son named John, possibly after his father and his father-in-law, a daughter named Mary, possibly named after his mother-in-law, and a daughter named Elizabeth (but no Catherine), possibly named after his mother.
Children of DAVID JOHNSON and MARY UPDIKE are:
i. JOHN6 JOHNSON, b. 1777; d. 12 Jan 1805. John is not listed in his father's will dated
10/3/1824,.[65]
having predeceased him. I have based his
relationship on his place of burial next to an infant of David Johnson in the
family burial ground. Presumably, he had
no descendants.

30 Sep 1828, NJ; m. ANN O. STOCKTON; b. 1783, NJ; d. 08 Mar 1865, NJ.

1858, Liberty, Knox, OH; m. JEREMIAH W. UPDIKE, 30 Jan 1811, Kingston Presbyterian Church, NJ; b. 1789,
NJ; d. 1867, Liberty, Knox, OH. I have
based her parents on the story in the Opdyke genealogy that Jeremiah "got
his wife on the David Johnson farm near Stony Brook where there is a graveyard
containing a number of graves of old Updikes."
vi. NANCY JOHNSON, b. 1786; d. 16
Nov 1824. Her will also does not mention
her presumed siblings, John, William and Mary.
vii. HESTOR JOHNSON, b. 1790; d. 18
Jun 1851. In the 1850 Census she is
listed as being born in 1802, living with Elizabeth, born 1782
viii. MARY JOHNSON, b. 1790; d. 17
Feb 1808. Mary is not listed in her
father's will having predeceased him. I
have based her relationship on her place of burial with daughters of David
Johnson in the family burial ground.
Presumably, she had no descendants.
ix. ABIGAIL (M) JOHNSON, b. 1792, NJ; d. 09 Apr 1880. In the Census: of 1850 she is listed as being born 1806, living next door to William, son of her brother, David.
