Genealogical Notes on the “Van Der” Vliet Family
“A Genealogy of the ‘Van Der’ Vliet Family”[1] is an excellent genealogy of the descendants of Dick Janse Van Der Vliet with ample documentation. This post includes some updates to the family of John3 Vliet (Jan2, Dirck1 Janse Van Der Vliet), some descendants of the female line, and other comments.
The family of Hendrick2 Vliet is listed in the 1698 Census of Kings Co., NY with 1 male over 10 [Hendrick], 2 females over 10 [Tryntje, his wife, and another female] and 2 children. Since Dirck1 is not listed in the census, he is probably deceased[2] and the other female in Hendrick’s household is probably his mother, Geertje Gerrits. One of these children died by Nov 1706 when Hendrick paid for the use of the shroud.[3] Hendrick’s will in 1707 did not mention any children, so both had died young by then.
Maria3 Vliet (Jan2, Dirck1 Janse Van Der Vliet) was not baptized on 14 May 1702[4] at the Reformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn, NY; that was their daughter, Elsje, who died young. Maria married Adrian Hegeman on 1 May 1713, so was probably born about 1692.
The will of Geertje Gerrits, wife of Dirck1 Van Der Vliet, mentions her granddaughter, Dirckje, daughter of her deceased son, Dirck. She was born about 1710 and married Theodore Snedeker about 1729.[5] Her mother’s name is unknown, but based on the naming of her children it was likely Arriantje, see below.
The family of Jan2 Vliet is listed in the 1698 Census of Kings Co., NY with 1 male over 10 [Jan], 1 female over 10 [his wife, Geertje Ver Kerk], and 9 children. Only six of these children are known: Jan, Geertje, Dirck, Maria, Sarah, and Rebecca. The other three children either died young, or were not their children as none are named in Jan’s will.
Some information for the family of John3 Vliet was unclear. Claire Vliet Ackerman wrote an article, “Some Vliets of New Jersey: John Vliet of Piscataway, Middlesex County, and John Vliet of Six-Mile Run, Somerset County.”[6] In the article she questions whether or not John Vliet of Six-Mile Run is the son of a different John Vliet of Piscataway, his parentage being unknown.[7] It is unclear if she wrote this article before or after “A Genealogy of the ‘Van Der’ Vliet Family”, but I am assuming it was before. I think it is clear that John3 married first Fytje[8] Vanderlinde and second Margaret Brinson, as stated in “A Genealogy of the ‘Van Der’ Vliet Family”. One change to that genealogy is that John, Jr. was the son of Margaret Brinson, as stated in Margaret’s will,[9] not the son of his first wife. Fytje. Though it is unclear when Fytje died, it is also uncertain when John4 was born, so there is not necessarily an overlap in the first and 2nd marriages of John3. As Margaret’s son, John4 was still the grandson of Geertje Gerrits mentioned in her will. John’s son, John4, names four children in his will, not three as previously thought, being John, Simon, Grietje, and Geertje. Each were named after their grandparents, supporting the placement of John as Margaret/Grietje’s son, not Fytje’s.
John’s daughter, Geertje4, did not marry John4 Wyckoff (Simon3, Cornelius2, Peter1) as previously thought. The mother's maiden name is given as Wyckoff in the baptismal record of their daughter, Geertje.[10] Though in some Dutch churches mothers were listed with their married names, in the early records of the RDC of Harlingen from 1727 - 1734, this is the only baptismal record where the wife has the same last name as her husband, so in this record the mother's surname is also probably her maiden name. She is probably actually Geertje Wyckoff, daughter of Jacob Wyckoff and Lammetje Stryker, named as Geertje Wyckoff in her father's will[11] of 1730, not married at the time. A husband has not been identified for her in the Wyckoff Family in America.[12] Jacob Wyckoff's family lived in the same township as John Vliet's family.
Instead, Geertje4 Vliet married Joost4 Bennet (Isaac3, William2, Adrian1).[13] Most of their children were baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Southampton, Bucks Co., PA.
John Vliet and Fytje Vanderlinde had an undocumented daughter, Susannah, born about 1709 and named after her maternal grandmother, Susannah Brinkerhoff.[14] She married Garret3 Wynkoop (Garret2, Cornelius1) about 1731. Their children were also baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Southampton, PA.

correct, Dorothy did not marry Ryck Suydam or John Covert. Perhaps a different Dorothy Fine/Fijn did but
that seems unlikely.

Generation No. 4
14. JOHN4 WYCKOFF (GEERTJE3 VAN VLIET, JAN DIRCKSEN2, DIRCK JANSE1 VAN DER VLIET) was bap. 28 Apr 1708 in near Raritan, NJ, and died 01 Mar 1775 in Readington, Hunterdon, NJ. He married (1) GITTY WYCKOFF, daughter of JACOB WYCKOFF and LAMMETJE STRYKER. She was born circa 1713, and died bef. 1759. He married (2) ELIZABETH JOHNSON 17 Aug 1758 in Hunterdon, NJ9.
The will of JOHN WYCKOFF, dated 1772 March 12, Wyckof, John of Reading Township, Hunterdon Co., yeoman; will of. Mentions son, John (land in Oxford), son, Jacob (land in Oxford), wife Elizabeth, son, Simon (land on Pahatcunck creek), son-in-law, Simon Hageman, son-in-law, Samuel Wyckoff. His will does not mention all of his children, but allows for distributions to them all. Cornelius and Joseph file a complaint (which Joseph disavowed) with the Court requesting an accounting of the estate. The estate accounting held bonds against Andrew Johnson and Henry Johnson. It also mentions at least one payment for schooling of Peter Wyckoff (possibly another son) in 1777 and possibly in 1775 as well.[22]
ÿan Wyckof is how he signed his marriage license with Elizabeth Johnson. Elizabeth is described in the license as a spinster. Henry Johnson was the fellowbondsman. The spelling of his name on his will was the same as the license and the signature was undoubtably by the same hand. ELIZABETH JOHNSON may be an undocumented daughter of Andrew Johnson and Anna Van Natta, sister of Andrew Johnson and Henry Johnson.
Children of JOHN WYCKOFF and GITTY WYCKOFF are:
i. GEERTJE5 WYCKOFF, bap. 13 Apr 1733, near Harlingen, NJ; d. circa 1778,

[7] Her argument is summarized as follows: Jan Vliet and
his wife Margaret Brinson, were living in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ by
1710. She could not have married Jan3
Vliet (Jan2, Dirck1 Van Der Vliet) he was supposedly
married to Fytje Vanderlinde at overlapping times, living in Somerset Co. She cites "First Settlers of Ye Plantations of Piscataway and Woodbridge." However, it doesn’t' actually say he lived in
Piscataway or when they got married. It
only states that Margaret married John in a short section on the Brynson
family.
[8] Her name is listed as Seytje at the baptism of her
daughter, Geertje, but in her father’s will she is named Vytje, a variation of
Fytje, and she had 2 granddaughters named Sophia, the English equivalent of
Fytje.
